A Dictionary of Islam ReviewA word of caution to anyone considering buying this book. Beware of where you are buying it. The edition I have (published in Pakistan by Ashraf) has the folling words on the inside cover "The publisher has very meticulously gone through the pages and has expunged the remarks deroatory to Islamic faith, published in the original edition. However, the reader is requested to point out to the publisher such expressions as may not be cononant with the basic principles of Islam"
As a result, large passages dealing with for example the wahabbi movement have been completely removed from the book an act especially puzzling as in the same preface it is pointed out that Thomas Patric Hughes gave "very special attention to the views of the wahhabis, as it is the author's conviction that they represent the earliest teachings of the Musllim faith as they came from Muhammad and his immediate successors"
A previous reviewer has pointed out that Kazi have also published an edition and due to them also being Wahabi/Saudi backed it may also suffer from the same form of censorship.
The book however, gives a worthwile brief introduction to Islam (even if it is highly coloured by it being from the perspective of the 19th century Indian subcontinent) a brief biography of the prophet Muhammad is provided as is an introduction to the Qur'an complete with recomended comentaries that are popular amongst sunni and Shia Muslims of the day (interesting especially in that the Saudi sponsored ibn Kathir commentary is not amongst the list)
It should be pointed out that this is not a complete dictionary of Islam and the author had no intention of it being so but rather an introduction to the subject. He has relied heavily on the works of E.W. Lane especially his book 'Manners and customs'A Dictionary of Islam Overview

Chemical Misconceptions: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Cure: Classroom Resources, Part 2 Reviewfabulous book! VERY helpful for any type of chemistry teacher, especially high school! Wish I'd had this the past 13 years!Chemical Misconceptions: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Cure: Classroom Resources, Part 2 OverviewChemistry is a conceptual subject and, in order to explain many of the concepts, teachers use models to describe the microscopic world and relate it to the macroscopic properties of matter. This can lead to problems, as a student's every-day experiences of the world and use of language can contradict the ideas put forward in chemical science. These titles have been designed to help tackle this issue of misconceptions. Part 1 deals with the theory, by including information on some of the key alternative conceptions that have been uncovered by research; ideas about a variety of teaching approaches that may prevent students acquiring some common alternative conceptions; and general ideas for assisting students with the development of appropriate scientific conceptions. Part 2 provides strategies for dealing with some of the misconceptions that students have, by including ready to use classroom resources including copies of probes that can be used to identify ideas held by students; some specific exercises aimed at challenging some of the alternative ideas; and classroom activities that will help students to construct the chemical concepts required by the curriculum. Used together, these two books will provide a good theoretical underpinning of the fundamentals of chemistry. Trialled in schools throughout the UK, they are suitable for teaching ages 11-18.

VMware VI and vSphere SDK: Managing the VMware Infrastructure and vSphere ReviewThis book differs from other recent texts on VMware, like VMware VI3 Implementation and Administration. Those are for sysadmins, and they explain how to manually use GUIs provided by VMware to run their programs.
The current book is directed at a programmer, who presumably also has sysadmin duties or who needs to make custom tools for a sysadmin. Here there are no cute screen shots of GUI panels made by others. Instead, you should be an experienced java programmer. VMware has put together an extensive library of java classes, that tie into their firmware. The text takes you in detail through sample code that uses these classes.
Though the book makes no mention of this, you can use the classes to write higher level driver code that is in the spirit of a JMX or Service Oriented Architecture approach. Perhaps these latter methods were never proffered for virtual machines. But they describe loosely coupled management viewpoints that might be well suited to the code in this book.
VMware VI and vSphere SDK: Managing the VMware Infrastructure and vSphere OverviewDrive Even More Value from Virtualization: Write VMware® Applications that Automate Virtual Infrastructure ManagementCompanies running VMware have already achieved enormous gains through virtualization. The next wave of benefits will come when they reduce the time and effort required to run and manage VMware platforms. The VMware Infrastructure Software Development Kit (VI SDK) includes application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow developers and administrators to do just that. Until now, there has been little documentation for the APIs. In VMware VI and vSphere SDK, software architect Steve Jin demystifies the entire VMware VI and new vSphere SDK and offers detailed, task-based coverage of using the APIs to manage VMware more efficiently and cost-effectively. Jin walks you through using the VI SDK and cloud-computing vSphere SDK to manage ESX servers, ESX clusters, and VirtualCenter servers in any environment–no matter how complex. Drawing on his extensive expertise working with VMware strategic partners and enterprise customers, he places the VI SDK in practical context, presenting realistic samples and proven best practices for building robust, effective solutions. Jin demonstrates how to manage every facet of a VMware environment, including inventory, host systems, virtual machines (VMs), snapshots, VMotion, clusters, resource pools, networking, storage, data stores, events, alarms, users, security, licenses, and scheduled tasks. Coverage includesUnderstanding how the VI SDK fits into your VMware VI and Cloud Ready vSphere Environment

Software Requirement Patterns (Best Practices) ReviewThe purpose of this book is to help you decide and define what a new software system needs to do and to suggest what extra features to add to make it a very good system. It saves you effort and enables you to be more precise, by providing detailed guidance on how to specify individual requirements.
Requirement patterns are encapsulated expertise, conveniently prepackaged for reuse. The book contains 37 requirement patterns, each of which describes an approach to tackling a particular type of situation that comes up repeatedly in all kinds of systems, but focusing on commercial business software. Only a fraction of any system is specific to its business area; the bulk occurs over and over again no matter what your system is for. These patterns cover more than half of all requirements in some systems, and even more if you add the extra requirements the patterns suggest. Each pattern conveys not only the basic information that a requirement needs to convey, it also offers guidance on supplemental information that you need in your requirements in order to make them complete, comprehensible, and properly cross-referenced. This book contains over 400 example requirements, many of which are suitable for applying unchanged to any system and others that are a useful starting point for a requirement to suit the reader's needs. These examples are the heart of the book. Currently, the product description does not show the table of contents, so I do that next:

This book is very good at taking a dull subject - software requirements and their specification - and making it interesting and accessible. Highly recommended.Software Requirement Patterns (Best Practices) Overview
Learn proven, real-world techniques for specifying software requirements with this practical reference. It details 30 requirement "patterns" offering realistic examples for situation-specific guidance for building effective software requirements. Each pattern explains what a requirement needs to convey, offers potential questions to ask, points out potential pitfalls, suggests extra requirements, and other advice. This book also provides guidance on how to write other kinds of information that belong in a requirements specification, such as assumptions, a glossary, and document history and references, and how to structure a requirements specification.

A disturbing proportion of computer systems are judged to be inadequate; many are not even delivered; more are late or over budget. Studies consistently show one of the single biggest causes is poorly defined requirements: not properly defining what a system is for and what it's supposed to do. Even a modest contribution to improving requirements offers the prospect of saving businesses part of a large sum of wasted investment. This guide emphasizes this important requirement need-determining what a software system needs to do before spending time on development. Expertly written, this book details solutions that have worked in the past, with guidance for modifying patterns to fit individual needs-giving developers the valuable advice they need for building effective software requirements

How to Do Everything Genealogy ReviewI select and buy books for our Columbine Genealogical and Historical Society to donate to local libraries. This book got my attention when it arrived and I am utterly amazed at the quality and detail of its contents. George is legend in the genealogy community, he has done it all and his advice and examples in this updated 2nd edition are dead on. His examples are perfect and his text lean and to the point. I've done lots of genealogy research, and I was picking up new tips in each chapter, like this bit of advice to get access to today's 'semi-restricted' public records found on pgs 317-318:
(quote)"... Be prepared by carrying a copy of your pedigree chart with you, along with copies of birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates, obituaries, and other documentation that might prove your relationship. The fact that you 'are' prepared to prove your relationship speaks volumes to the people from whom you make these requests." (end quote)
I have recommended this book to our society instructors as well as numerous friends. Much of the material in this book comes from George's seminars which are always top notch. Considering the price of seminars these days, the book is a true bargain! How to Do Everything Genealogy OverviewTrace your family tree and discover your roots

Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 2000 in 21 Days (2nd Edition) ReviewIf you are an absolute SQL Server 2000 beginner but understand (basically) what a database is, this is the book for you. I have no experience in programming or SQL, and I've been able to ramp up VERY quickly with SQL Server, creating databases, tables, queries, and stored procedures with ease using the examples. The book is clearly laid out and has good examples. However, it IS a book about the server itself, not programming SQL. It contains a great deal of information on using ALL of the features included in SQL Server 2000. If all you want to do is learn to do is write queries, you might want to skip this and go for a book with a more narrow focus. This book's treatment of SQL Server is very broad.Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 2000 in 21 Days (2nd Edition) OverviewSams Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 2000 in 21 Days, 2E will clearly define and walk the reader through the features of SQL Server 2000.The reader will be given tips and tricks for working within the new SQL Server 2000 product environment as well as working with SQL Server databases. The book will feature information on:Create and alter databases.Manage security and implement permissions.Protect, backup, and restore data.Enforce and ensure data integrity.Modify and manipulate data.Create views, triggers, functions, and stored procedures.
