Foreign Language Made Easy ReviewNot counting the introduction and preface, there are 88 pages of text. Not that this would matter if the information was actually helpful. Half of this is a survey of the foreign languages most commonly studied in the U.S. along with explanation of a few of the things that might cause confusion for a native English speaker. It's slightly useful, but you can get much better information from language-specific books.Only 9 pages of the book actually try to give any tips for learning languages, and most of them are really general study tips like "pay attention in class" and "study and review every day." The only language-specific tips are: use flashcards for studying vocabulary and memorize grammatical structures by examples in context. The author also says you shouldn't listen to language tapes that have the English translations because it'll confuse you. He says that Instead you should listen to audio books and movies that are only in the foreign language. This may be okay for an advanced learner who already knows the language pretty well, but if you're just starting out it's ridiculous advice: it'll just sound like a meaningless jumble, you won't be able to pick out the separate words, much less understand what they mean.
The rest of the book has a few interesting tidbits about languages, clichés about why you should learn to speak a foreign language such as "it'll give you increased opportunities in business" and "it'll help you discover other cultures," a sample conjugation of an English verb to illustrate the names of the various tenses, and a glossary of grammatical terms that I found unhelpful because it's out of context and it doesn't explain terms that come up in the language-specific chapters such as "case.
I've read many books on learning foreign languages and the best of the lot by far is Language Logic: Practical and Effective Techniques to Learn Any Foreign Language. If you're interested in comparing the grammar of different languages, learning about language families, and getting an approach for learning several languages simultaneously, check out The Loom of Language: An Approach to the Mastery of Many Languages. It's a 690 page book and far from being easy reading, but it has excellent information on how the grammar of other language families compares to English and how they compare to each other, and a lot of good advice on how to go about learning a language in the quickest and most efficient way depending on your goals.Foreign Language Made Easy OverviewMany high school and university students find foreign language classes difficult. Although learning a language is a natural process, students study languages inefficiently and they lack effective strategies for language learning.
Foreign Language Made Easy is designed to make studying a foreign language an easy and enjoyable experience. The best techniques for foreign language success are explained in a simple format that anyone can follow. The last sections of Foreign Language Made Easy are language-specific, and include the most common languages taught in the United States, such as Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Japanese, and Chinese.
