Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary ReviewI got this book during summer vacation in an attempt to make vocabulary instruction more interesting. I copied the first two pages for my 5th graders, we sang the original song, and then I had them tell me which words fit in which blanks. Then, we sang it again. In under 15 minutes, the kids new 7 new Tier 2 words! On top of that, we were all laughing our heads off about "Be compassionate to your web-footed comrades."Each songs has several synonyms that would fit into the blanks. I whited out all but one synonym for each blanked out word. This made our instruction quicker and more focused. It also didn't overwhelm them with too many synonyms to remember. After this, I put the new words on note cards on a bulletin board and when the kids find these words in their daily reading, they can show me the word and then go up and put a tally on the note card.
Lots of fun, sticks in your head. It's a fool-proof way to learn words, and it's way more exciting than vocabulary books.Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary OverviewIntroduce students to new words and their meanings using favorite childhood songs and rhymes. First, students sing or recite a familiar song or rhyme and discuss what it means. Then, they replace some of its words with synonyms. Students can learn 10 to 20 new vocabulary words per song or rhyme. A fun yet meaningful way to build vocabulary! For use with Grades 3–6.
