The Interpreter's Resource (Topics in Translation) ReviewIf you are already a working interpreter or a student seeking to become an interpreter, you'll surely love Mary Phelan's book, "The Interpreter's Resource," which contains 232 pages of great information for interpreters. The book is published by Multilingual Matters, a publisher devoted to language-related topics, including translation and interpreting.
As the person who set up the Graduate Certificate in Community Interpreting at Dublin City University, Mary knows the field well and generously shares her knowledge in this book. One of the things I love about this book is that Phelan gives some attention to some lesser-known areas of interpreting, such as television interpreting, videoconference interpreting, and yes, even wiretapping/tape transcription, which I was very pleased to see included in the book.
She also discusses community, court, and medical interpreting in detail, and offers a clear discussion of the term "community interpreting." This is important, because "community interpreting" can mean many different things to different people, and the definition varies throughout the world.
Mary's book also has sections on the European Union, an interesting chapter called War and Peace, the United Nations, and a great section on associations for interpreters. While the book was published in 2001, the vast majority of the information it contains is still extremely useful and relevant.The Interpreter's Resource (Topics in Translation) OverviewThe Interpreter's Resource provides a comprehensive overview of interpreting at the start of the twenty first century. As well as explaining the different types of interpreting and their uses, it contains a number of Codes of Ethics, information on Community Interpreting around the world and detailed coverage of international organisations, which employ interpreters.
