Critical Thinking Skills - Language Arts Review1. A springboard introduces the topic. The springboard is a literary form (such as narrative, myth, screenplay, journalistic account) that portrays people in a specific context confronted by problems the student will need to ponder. This springboard may be reproduced or read to the class.2. Two pages of facts follow the narrative, providing students with information about the problem. These pages should be reproduced for students. As in real life, some of theis information will be relevant to their thinking about the problem; some will not. Part of their critical thinking task will be to distinguish useful information from irrelevant.
3. The activity pages that follow are invitations to think about the subject in a variety of ways (analogy, cause and effect, and comparison and contrast). These invitations question it, and relate it both to the springboards and to their own lives.
4. Suggested writing assignments at the end of each chapter enable students to sum up what they have learned, to put their critical thinking into action. In each chapter students can imitate the literary springboard from the beginning of the chapter (write a narrative, sceenplay, myth, or journalistic account, for example). Or they can formulate their ideas in a variety of context-specific assignments, recommending a course of action at school, in the community or home, or stating succinctly what they have learned as a result of the exercises.Critical Thinking Skills - Language Arts Overview
