Spanish Verbs (Barron's Verb Series) ReviewPlease note that this is for the second edition of this book, copyright 2001. The previous edition says copyright 1990. I can't tell from the Amazon book page here if this is the first edition or second edition, but the cover design is slightly different from that displayed here from my copy, which I recently purchased, so I mention that just in case.
No matter what language you're learning (unless its Turkish, which has 100% regular verbs, or Japanese, which has only two), verbs are usually a major difficulty and stumbling block in learning a foreign language. This is the best compact verb book I've seen for Spanish. The pages VII to XL (7 to 40) in the introduction contain the best capsule grammar of verbs for Spanish I've seen, and is better than the ones I've seen in some of the bigger, beefier grammar books for quickly getting a good grasp of the basics as well as the more complex issues.
There are many features I like about this book, but one especially helpful thing the author does is to explain the formal grammatical names for the verb tenses, aspects, and moods and how they are formed in English, along with plenty of examples. For example, many of us have never thought of what the preterit or pluperfect is in English, but Kendris explains this along with many other useful things. Another nice feature is his discussion of how some verbs that express a mental state actually change meaning in the preterit. For example, the sentence, "Supe la verdad," means "I found out the truth." (Saber, which means to know, changes from "know" to "found" in the preterit). And the sentence "Pude hacerlo," means "I succeeded in doing it." (Poder, which means "to be able," means "succeeded" in the preterit).
Other features include extensive lists and coverage of irregular verbs, an index of 1000 verbs keyed to one of the models or patterns of the 300 main verbs in the text, an index of common irregular verbs identified by the infinitive, which allows you to look up which infinitive verb form it belongs to without knowing that initially, and an index of Spanish/English verbs. Each conjugation page contains at least a few examples at the bottom of the page of usages, such as in the Kendris's larger 501 Spanish Verbs book. Overall, an excellent little verb and grammar book for the student of Spanish, and considering the price is only 6 bucks and is over 300 pages long, a great value to boot.Spanish Verbs (Barron's Verb Series) OverviewApproximately 300 most frequently used Spanish verbs are presented, one verb per page, arranged alphabetically, fully conjugated, and identified by the English infinitive form. Books in this series are smaller and shorter versions of Barron's 501 Verbs series. They make handy quick-reference sources for language students, teachers, and translators.

Spanish For Gringos ReviewThis book (and the accompanying tapes) are great! For years I've resisted learning Spanish, although it is becoming more and more a necessary skill in America. After only reading the INTRODUCTION to this book, I was already more comfortable with Spanish speakers. This approach teaches you to relax, and as soon as you do that you'll be surprised at how much you already know. This book not only gave me great skills, it also boosted my confidence. I am now able to communicate with my Spanish friends and coworkers. Don't look any farther, this book is the best!!Spanish For Gringos OverviewToday it's more important than ever for English-speakers to have some working knowledge of Spanish. In this book, author William Harvey shows that you learn Spanish most easily when you understand the "message"--not when you memorize grammar rules. This informal self-teaching course is for you if you lack the time or patience for traditional language training. You'll learn key Spanish phrases and get tips that will help you comprehend the spoken language. You'll also learn to pronounce words and phrases so that a Latin-American can understand you.

Guide to Spanish Idioms ReviewThis is the best book of idioms I have found. The book is organized alphabetically with both English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English sections. I found it extremely useful during my trip to South America.
I studied Spanish in Buenos Aires, and my teacher was so impressed with the book, she asked that I send her a copy from the US. Without a knowledge of idioms, conversations become dull and and it is difficult to read Spanish newspapers. You can't beat the book's comprehensive coverage. And you certainly can't beat the price!Guide to Spanish Idioms Overview
Guide to Spanish Idioms is packed with more than 2,500 idioms, English equivalents, and explanation of typical use. It also includes common "obstacles" such as nouns that change meaning according to gender or number. Users will find idioms that relate to moods, appearance, personal relations, unpleasant situations and difficulties, and more!

HarperCollins Spanish Unabridged Dictionary ReviewThis is an excellent dictionary. I could see just by glancing at it that it was a far better product than all the others, but when I actually sat down with it and took it for a spin I was amazed.
It includes such colloquialisms as heebie-jeebies, traipse, snoop, zit, and nosh. It includes such technical terms as theodolite (which the MS Word dictionary does not recognize), sprocket, and pixel. All the curse words and vulgarities I've ever heard are there, plus some additional ones I've never heard. And they have a special three-dot system whereby you can tell just how bad the word is considered by native speakers.
In the center of the volume is a very useful section on grammar and usage which has an abundance of the sort of examples you need when you're grappling with a new word.
While the coverage of Latin American Spanish is very good, there are still discrepancies and omissions that seem to stem from an Old World point of view. The letter(s) ll is said to be pronounced like the lli in million or like j in Latin America. But in over a quarter century of travel in Central and South America, as well as in conversations with Spanish speakers in the US, I have never yet heard anyone say "Como te liamas?" instead of "Como te yamas?"
Should you be planning a climb in the Andes, you can find the words for cairn and crampon, but you'll have to look elsewhere for carabiner and gabion (neither of which the MS dictionary recognizes). Considering all the Mexicans working in the US construction industry, you'd think the editors would include words for a wooden stud or 2-by-4, but they don't. A large percentage of these guest craftsmen specialize in concrete work, but Harper Collins doesn't have a listing for rebar. And whether you're using a carpentry tool or a networking device, you won't find the Spanish word for router.
Going for a hike in the desert of northern Mexico? Ask a doctor before you go what the word for antivenin is, because though it seems like a pretty important word, especially to someone who's just been bit by a serpiente de cascabel, it's not in this book.
It may sound like I'm finding fault with Harper Collins, but I'm not. I sincerely admire this dictionary and these are instances in which it could be made even better. An email address on the back cover could get these and other useful notes to the editors pronto.HarperCollins Spanish Unabridged Dictionary OverviewThe HarperCollins Spanish Unabridged Dictionary sets the standard in Spanish-English lexicography. The most frequently used words in both languages are treated in detail, helping the reader not only to understand but also to translate idiomatically. This dictionary also includes uniquely helpful cultural notes about life and institutions in Spanish and English-speaking countries to give you the edge in learning.

See It and Say It in Spanish ReviewThis is a great little book which I am using to learn Spanish so that I can communicate with a friend who speaks very little English. I know some French which is also in the Romance language family, so this has been really easy to pick up.

Because all I wanted was to quickly learn some basic vocabulary and make simple expressions, this little book was perfect, especially for those of you who also have a short attention span and never finishes a thick self-study language book.

The teaching approach in the book is very unique. For instance, you will first learn that "voy al" means "I'm going to (some place)", then you will see the phrases in spanish for "I'm going to the hotel", "I'm going to the bank", "I'm going to the market", etc, and in a minute you will have learned the basic expression for going somewhere, and some vocabulary for names of places. Then the book provides you will a list of drills will new vocabulary. It's very quick and useful.
