Neumann innately understands the greatest challenges facing history students assigned to write a term paper, as well as the challenges of instructors to construct usable paper prompts and locate reliable primary and secondary sources. Focusing on the breadth of Afrian American history, Neumann's work encompasses events from the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade to the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The book's organization deserves praise for its consistent structure: a succinct introduction to the historical event being considered, followed by term paper suggestions,alternate term paper suggestions,and then,finally, a list of primary and secondary sources. Of special note, the work provides World Wide Web sites and multimedia sources. As an instructor of history at both community colleges and universities, I am familiar with the sources Professor Neumann includes, and can vouch for their reliability.
