The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (Biblical Resource) ReviewAccording the the preface, Birlin has made no substantive changes to the previous edition. Rather, she corrected errors and added a previously unpublished and still incomplete essay on biblical simile by Lida Knorina. Thus, if you own the original, you need to decide if the essay on simile is worth the full cover price.
However, if you don't own the first edition, do buy her work; it is excellent. She covers all the various types of biblical parallelism in depth using Hebrew examples with English translations. Although I read the first edition before I knew Hebrew, I would recommend having at least a rudimentary understanding of Hebrew before tackling this work. I had a hard time understanding morphological, lexical, and phonological parallelism without basic Hebrew skills. If you enjoy this work you may also want to read Robert Alter's less technical book The Art of Biblical Poetry.

In The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism Adele Berlin analyzes parallelism, a major feature of biblical poetry, from a linguistic perspective.Berlin begins with a brief history of the study of biblical parallelism by biblical scholars. She then focuses on parallelism considered more broadly in the work of linguist Roman Jakobson, a new section in this second edition. The chapters following concentrate on the various linguistic levels that come into play in the construction of parallel lines. Here is the key observation that parallel lines involve both similarity and difference on all linguistic levels - morphology, syntax, lexical, semantic, and phonologic. Berlin concludes by showing how these levels can be combined and analyzing examples of parallelism in biblical passages.Linguistic, but not overly technical, The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism will enhance understanding of biblical poetry for both biblical and literary scholars.
