The Rise and Fall of English: Reconstructing English as a Discipline ReviewThis book will probably never make the NYTimes Bestseller list, but for its intended audience of literature and English composition instructors, this is a thought-provoking text which provides a much-needed jab in the ribs to English departments everywhere.
This is not a dry critical review, but a practical, specific and inspirational text regarding the declining status of English studies in the U.S. Scholes doesn't just whine about what's wrong, but shows readers some ways to make English a useful and necessary component of a university education.
As an English graduate student, I was particularly intrigued by Scholes' ideas of making English composition courses more than just a dumping ground for underpaid instructors and unenthusiastic students. Scholes expanded my own conceptions about what English composition should do, and how it can be made more relevant to today's attention-challenged students.
Scholes has renewed my faith in English studies. Anyone who has taken or taught a college-level English course and wondered what the hell they were doing should read this intelligent and challenging book (or text, if you prefer). The Rise and Fall of English: Reconstructing English as a Discipline Overview

Multicultural Voices in Contemporary Literature: A Resource for Teachers ReviewI attended a workshop facilitated by the author of this book and was so impressed with both her presentation and the activities in the book that I bought a copy right then and there. I love the way the book is organized. You get the background information on thirty nine different multicultural authors and illustrators of books for children. There are brief summaries of books written and illustrated by the writiers and artists highlighted and then there are suggested acitivities to go with the books. The book has given me new ideas to help the students in my class broaden their world view. I recommend it to any classroom teacher who wants to plan lessons that emphasize multicultural awareness.Multicultural Voices in Contemporary Literature: A Resource for Teachers Overview
With the original publication of Multicultural Voices, Frances Ann Day celebrated the lives of thirty-nine multicultural authors and illustrators, helping educators bring students and authors together in a way that promoted stimulating reading, imaginative writing, and cultural sensitivity. Thousands of readers not only discovered a new body of literature, they also gained new sensitivity to writing styles, language subtleties, and worldviews.
Now, the new edition has been significantly revised to keep it current and make it even more useful. Day has added a number of new authors, updated the biographical profiles, included reviews and activities for more than 120 new books, and expanded the resource list for educators, librarians, and parents. There are five appendixes containing assessment plans, additional activities, lists of birthdays, a calendar of multicultural events, and information on additional resources. Plus, a comprehensive subject index helps readers plan story sessions and units of study. Themes, curricular areas, genres, and topics facilitate the use of literature across the curriculum.
This guide is highly versatile, enabling readers to adapt the material to fit their individual teaching and learning styles, curriculum requirements, and educational goals. Educators, librarians, and parents alike will find the book an inspiring resource.

The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (Biblical Resource) ReviewAccording the the preface, Birlin has made no substantive changes to the previous edition. Rather, she corrected errors and added a previously unpublished and still incomplete essay on biblical simile by Lida Knorina. Thus, if you own the original, you need to decide if the essay on simile is worth the full cover price.
However, if you don't own the first edition, do buy her work; it is excellent. She covers all the various types of biblical parallelism in depth using Hebrew examples with English translations. Although I read the first edition before I knew Hebrew, I would recommend having at least a rudimentary understanding of Hebrew before tackling this work. I had a hard time understanding morphological, lexical, and phonological parallelism without basic Hebrew skills. If you enjoy this work you may also want to read Robert Alter's less technical book The Art of Biblical Poetry.
I have deducted one star because the book was corrected not revised.
The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (Biblical Resource) OverviewUnderstanding of biblical poetry, like any other, is enhanced by the study of its structure. In The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism Adele Berlin analyzes parallelism, a major feature of biblical poetry, from a linguistic perspective.Berlin begins with a brief history of the study of biblical parallelism by biblical scholars. She then focuses on parallelism considered more broadly in the work of linguist Roman Jakobson, a new section in this second edition. The chapters following concentrate on the various linguistic levels that come into play in the construction of parallel lines. Here is the key observation that parallel lines involve both similarity and difference on all linguistic levels - morphology, syntax, lexical, semantic, and phonologic. Berlin concludes by showing how these levels can be combined and analyzing examples of parallelism in biblical passages.Linguistic, but not overly technical, The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism will enhance understanding of biblical poetry for both biblical and literary scholars.
