Um. . .: Slips, Stumbles, and Verbal Blunders, and What They Mean ReviewOptical illusions are fascinating, because we all, at some level, think that seeing is believing, and are amazed to find in how many ways our eyes can be fooled. They are not just amusements, however; in the past few decades, neurological researchers have used the mistaken impressions such illusions give us to look deeply into the parts of our brains that process visual data. The neuronal machinery that makes the errors thereby reveals what it is silently doing when it is doing its usual error-free processing. Similarly, over the past few decades, speech errors have been harnessed to help understand the almost infinitely complex process it takes to make a sentence. That is one of the fascinating points in _Um... : Slips, Stumbles, and Verbal Blunders, and What They Mean_ (Pantheon) by Michael Erard. Erard, who has an academic background in linguistics and English, is a freelance writer who has looked into what you might think of as a pretty limited field even for professor types. People say "um" a lot, and they mix up their word pronunciations and sentence structure. We generally ignore such flaws, no matter how universal they may be, and in fact we may be programmed to ignore them. Still, if they are universal, they must be mean something. Erard has wandered all over to visit researchers who are each looking deeply into a specific area of linguistic mistakes and bringing forth a new understanding of how language works. The result is an entertaining book that can only make readers appreciate how complicated spoken language is, and admire how it usually goes fluently.
What do all these "ums" mean? Not anxiety. One of the earliest products of "disfluency research" was that the number of filler words has no correlation with the level of anxiety. It might be that "um" isn't an error, but a means that a speaker has of signaling a listener that a delay is coming, perhaps a hunt for an important word or concept, and in this way the speaker is inviting the listener to keep up with not only the stream of thought but the process of thinking. If "um" plays a linguistic role, then perhaps it is not really an error, and Erard documents that there was no campaign to eliminate "um" until the early twentieth century. The book's subtitle hints that there is more to it than just "um", and there is much more, starting with an amusing portrait of the 19th-century Oxford don Rev. William Archibald Spooner who was famous for transposing word sounds. "You have tasted a worm", he is supposed to have said, when he wished to say, "You have wasted a term." Many of his supposed sayings he didn't say at all, and many of his colleagues said they never heard any. People have made vast lists of spoonerisms (as they have of every other sort of verbal error), and the lists reflect that something orderly is going on even in such a verbal pratfall. In verbal slips, we are more likely to fluff the initial sound, for instance, and the initial syllable of a word, and the syllable that gets the emphasis. If we misspeak and insert a wrong word, it is not likely to be a nonsense word, and we almost always insert a noun for a noun, a verb for a verb, and so on. Freudian slips are covered here, but researchers are demonstrating that these mistakes are a linguistic, rather than a neurotic, manifestation.
Erard covers a pleasing range of language gaffs, and part of the appeal of the book is that everyone will recognize the errors he describes. Erard covers the career of Kermit Schaefer, who did not invent the term "blooper", but who collected enough funny radio and television mistakes to became the "King of Bloopers", and to make a fortune on how much we enjoy the amusing verbal mistakes of people who use language professionally. He tells of the research of Stanford's Arnold Zwicky on "eggcorns", a term which unites "egg" and "corn" for a malapropism for "acorn". Like "very close veins" for "varicose veins", these are slips of the tongue that have become ossified so that the individual using the term thinks it is correct. In Shanghai, Erard visits the company Saybot which makes software to help Chinese keep from mangling English. An enjoyable penultimate chapter is wickedly called "President Blunder", but is actually pretty gentle on the famous gaffes of George W. Bush. No one knows, for instance, if the president who is famous for such sayings as "You're working hard to keep food on your family" actually makes more verbal errors than any of his predecessors, or more than other people in general. Erard points out that it is fundamentally wrong to criticize "how smart or competent or moral a person is because he or she doesn't speak like you do" but on the other hand it is wrong to praise the authenticity of error-prone speech when the excellence of error-free speech is an ideal (if unattainable) goal. The surprise is that if we magically managed to eliminate all our errors of speaking, we would lose this window into the mysterious inner workings of our capacity for language.

Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition ReviewThe Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics provides a concise place where the language teacher or language researcher can find definitions of terms they don't remember in their field of specialization. It gives not only lengthy contextualized definitions but also provides references for those who want to look deeper into a topic. The dictionary also provides cross references to other relevant definitions.
The only thing that might be considered in revision is putting the words into categories under specialization as a possible appendix (i.e. sociolinguistics, language testing, psycholinguistics). This might help and entice the reader to look at the dictionary as a learning tool as well as a reference tool. This would provide an additional way to use the dictionary in order to learn specific vocabulary for a specialization under the umbrella of applied linguistics or language teaching.Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition OverviewThis Dictionary is an essential tool for students of applied linguistics, language teaching, TEFL, and introductory courses in general linguistics and explainsthose difficult theoretical terms which students may encounteraccross these fields.

An Introduction to Functional Grammar ReviewHalliday's Introduction to Functional Grammar, now in its revised and improved Second Edition, is the best book you can read if you want to understand how English grammar is a resource for making meaning. Most formal grammar is just about syntax -- how words get put together grammatically, with no consideration of how people use language to communicate a meaning. This book has been the basis for many of the most successful applications of linguistics to education, language teaching, and studies of culture, communication, mass media, politics, etc. It's a book to read, use, and keep.An Introduction to Functional Grammar OverviewIn this extensively revised third edition, Halliday and Matthiessen retain the organization and topical coverage of the earlier editions, while incorporating a considerable amount of new material. They give greater emphasis to the systemic perspective, in which grammaticalization is understood in the context of an overall model of language. Their description of grammar is grounded in a comprehensive theory, but it is a theory which evolves in the process of being applied.

Handbook of the International Phonetic Association: A Guide to the Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (International Handbook Assoc) ReviewThis is a much needed and superb book. It is a must for all the specialists and beginners in phonetic transcription. At last, we have a general and compact presentation of the current version of IPA, also throwing new light on the rationale of some choices that were not clear or explicit enough in the papers appeared in the Journal of the IPA. A new symbol (for the retroflex implosive of Sindhi) is also added, together with some proposals for a wider usage of little apex letters. I would have appreciated still more details on the (clumsy and much debatable) solutions proposed by present IPA for tonal notations: I feel definitely more at ease on Yuanren Chao's side! The choice of sample languages is quite balanced as for families and geographical distribution. In my opinion, however, the languages should also have been chosen also because of their sociolinguistic relevance. Might we hope, e.g., for something on Spanish and Italian in the next edition?Handbook of the International Phonetic Association: A Guide to the Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (International Handbook Assoc) OverviewThis book is a comprehensive guide to the International Phonetic Alphabet, widely used for over a century to transcribe the sounds of languages. The Handbook is in three parts: Part I contains an introduction to phonetic description and exemplification of the use of phonetic symbols; Part II consists of twenty-nine "Illustrations" of the application of the International Phonetic Alphabet to a range of languages; and Part III covers speech pathology, computer codings, and the history of the IPA. This is an essential reference work for phoneticians and linguists more generally.

Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI am an educator who recently had to overhaul and redesign a large-scale vocabulary instruction program. The information in this book was invaluable to me. I found it to be accurate, insightful, actionable, well-organized, and comprehensive.
As another teacher suggested, this book is not full of teaching activities, lesson plans, or word lists. (If you want that kind of book, you might try The Vocabulary Teacher's Book of Lists.) It is, however, full of big-picture facts and credible answers to important questions. It gave me confidence in my approach and helped me make many decisions. It also helped me plan teacher training.
If you are teaching in a traditional classroom setting with an established curriculum and an established set of practices, this book will probably not change the way you teach very much (although it might be interesting). However, if you are making larger-scale decisions about your vocabulary program, this book is a wonderful resource.Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewThis highly practical book presents research-based approaches to building students' vocabulary and promoting a lifelong appreciation of words. Prominent researchers identify and discuss the multiple components of effective vocabulary instruction--teaching the meanings of specific words, teaching students strategies for learning new words on their own, and providing opportunities for word and language play. In every chapter, findings on the processes of successful vocabulary learning are translated into useful, effective instructional activities and techniques. Outlined are important new ideas for designing curricula and providing experiences that help students of all ages and skill levels gain access to the meanings of words that they read. Throughout, engaging classroom examples enhance the utility of this teacher-friendly resource.

Using Russian: A Guide to Contemporary Usage ReviewThis book is simply unbelievable in its scope and detail. It even surpasses Terrence Wade's "A Comprehensive Russian Grammar". Derek Offord starts out with an examination of the major levels of speech, i.e. register 1 (colloquial or common speech), register 2 (the polite speech of an educated person which is not formal), and register 3 (the advanced formal speech, such as scientific, official business, and publicistic speech). He also mentions a sub-level of speech which does not fall into the appropriate speech of the above registers, but includes slang and vulgar speech. He not only analyzes these levels of speech, but gives detailed examples of each. And that's just chapter one!
Chapter two deals with problems in meaning, such as homophones, homonyms, and words found only in the plural or only in the singular.
Chapter three deals with words that are hard to translate from English to Russian.
Chapter four deals with special vocabulary and idioms, including interjections and vulgar speech.
Chapter five delves into extrememly useful ways to use Russian for measurement, currency, fractions, time, telephone numbers, postal addresses, family relationships, public notices, abbreviations, acronyms, names of countries and nationalities, and names denoting inhabitants of Russian cities and towns.
Chapter six examines verbal etiquette in depth.
Chapter seven goes into word formation with all its variations, such as suffix and prefix, and augmentatives versus diminutives.
Chapter eight looks at inflection, chapter nine examines prepositions, and chapter ten goes deep into syntax for all the cases.
I agree with the previous reviewer who said that the word "awesome" would be an understatement to describe this book. This book is truly the key to mastery, well worth the money to buy it and the time to study it.Using Russian: A Guide to Contemporary Usage OverviewUsing Russian is a guide to Russian usage for those who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge. Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers, and focuses on questions of style and register which are all too often ignored. Clear, readable and easy to consult, it will prove invaluable to students seeking to improve their fluency and confidence in Russian. This second edition has been substantially revised and expanded to incorporate fresh material and up-to-date information. Many of the original chapters have been rewritten and one brand new chapter has been added, providing a clear picture of Russian usage in the 21st century.

Bastard Tongues: A Trail-Blazing Linguist Finds Clues to Our Common Humanity in the World's Lowliest Languages ReviewThis is the most interesting intellectual biography I've read. Bickerton's motto above helped him to wander into linguistics when he was teaching English literature in Africa, and then become one of the first scientists to discover how creole languages work.
Bickerton investigates the creole languages invented by the descendents of West Africans enslaved by European powers - - the English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch. He doesn't have the "Sitzfleisch" for library research, so he spends time in bars with the "unrighteous working class" in Columbia, Brazil, Barbados, Hawaii, Mauritius, and a dozen other places.
Bastard Tongues is a linguistic detective story. It takes Bickerton almost twenty years to find the answer to his mystery - - how creoles develop into full-fledged languages (just as complex as French or English) from the simpler contact languages (pidgins) that slaves used to communicate with their European overseers.
One of the most interesting of Bickerton's discoveries is how creoles exist on a continuum from "deeper" (almost incomprehensible to someone not a native speaker) to a level closer to the European language.
Bickerton goes into detail about how "the infernal machine" of a slave economy worked and shows how it was the nature of the slave economies in the "New World" that determined the evolution of their languages. Bickerton did as much for the field of history as linguistics. His analysis of the "expansion" and "establishment" phases of the American slave economies, and his investigation of the "maroons" - - escaped slaves, from the Spanish "cimarron," ("wild" or "runaway") is as interesting as the creole grammar.
His explanation of the TMA systems (tense, modality, aspect) in creoles will satisfy anybody who wants to get deep into interesting grammars without the academic jargon in some linguistics books. ("The difference between people and linguists is that people are interested in words and linguists are interested in grammar.")
Even if you're not overly interested in linguistics, but are interested in Hawaiin history, this book is fascinating. Sarah Roberts, one of Bickerton's students at the University of Hawaii, thought to look at court records rather than more literary sources for Hawaiin creole (or "Pidgin" with a capital P as it's called).
When Bickerton started in linguistics, there were three main theories about the origin of creoles: monogenesis (there was one ur-creole that influenced all the others), the superstrate theory (the creole mostly comes from the dominant language, say French or Portuguese), and the substrate theory (the creole mostly comes from the native language of the creole speakers (for instance, an indigenous West African language).
I never thought I'd say this in a review of a linguistics book, but SPOILER AHEAD.
Derek Bickerton showed that creole languages follow the same bioprogram that all human beings use to invent language, and that the reason creoles in the Pacific and South America resemble each other in basic grammar is because their users have the same mental equipment.
It looks like Bickerton's real intellectual leap wasn't so much in assuming creole-speaker-creators would use the same process as other kinds of language users, it was in NOTICING IN THE FIRST PLACE that the grammars of unrelated creoles were very much alike in very basic ways.
Bickerton's comparison of Saramaccan (a creole spoken in Surinam, with primarily English vocabulary) and Fa d'Ambu (the language of an island off West Central Africa with primarily Portuguese vocabulary) proves it.
Obviously, this owes something to Noam Chomsky's Universal Grammar (or Steven Pinker's "language instinct"), but Bickerton doesn't get involved in nature vs. nurture or biology vs. culture arguments. One thing I like about books by British and Australian linguists is that they don't feel the need to affirm or refute Chomsky's ideas. They take what works and leave what doesn't.
Bickerton also writes about Nicaraguan Sign Language, since deaf children create the same kind of full-bodied language that speaking children do, only using the mode of gesture instead of speech. Signed languages are just as complex as spoken ones. (Anyone who's read this far in this review will enjoy Talking Hands: What Sign Language Reveals About the Mind by Margalit Fox.)
More controversially, Bickerton proposes what linguists historically have called "The Forbidden Experiment," and which the National Science Foundation once approved for him, then cancelled. There are stories of rulers and "scientists" who supposedly isolated children without a language to see what would happen. (Fox's book Talking Hands goes into this subject as well, since that's the situation for deaf children who find themselves in a community of other deaf children, in which case they will create a basic pidgin in sign. When deaf children find themselves with others who have a basic sign language, they grammaticalize the pidgin and create a creole, a fully-formed signed language.)
I'm not as sure as Bickerton that the experiment he's proposing is a good idea, but like a lot in this book, it makes you think.

Shona-English/English-Shona Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) ReviewUntil this book was published there was no decent introductory guide to learning Shona available outside Zimbabwe. I run a website teaching basic Shona ( www.shonalanguage.fsnet.co.uk ) and used to get large numbers of requests for such a book - now here it is!
For a very reasonable price, it provides: - pronunciation guide; - introduction to grammar; - basic but adequate vocabulary; - sections on various everyday tasks, each with a useful set of words and phrases;
If you are planning to visit Zimbabwe and are at all interested in learning Shona you should definitely buy this book.
My only slight criticism is that the Grammar section is quite dense, you may need to be familiar with some grammatical terms. On the other hand it is /much/ more accessible than earlier Shona grammar books available outside Zimbabwe.
Overall, a great buy.Shona-English/English-Shona Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) OverviewShona, or ChiShona, a Bantu language spoken by eight million people in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, is the official and most widely-spoken language of Zimbabwe. Cohesion in English (English Language Series) ReviewHalliday and Hasan's "Cohesion in English" is in no way a light read to fill in lazy Sunday afternoons. This is one of the heaviest books I have read, and I have not used a dictionary so much since I last read Umberto Eco.
If you are into cohesion, and English, this is still a seminal text, despite the three decades that have passed since its publishing. It is a thorough book that covers topics such as lexical cohesion, ellipsis, substitution, referencing, and a whole host more. For cohesion, it is a hard book to surpass.
As mentioned by others, it is a book heavy on the vocabulary, and there were times when I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. "Hypotactic" and "paratactic" remain some of my favourites that I will probably never use again.
"Cohesion in English" is probably not the best place to start, but it is a good book. For those looking for more detail on the material, this is a good addition to beef up your knowledge and get that knowledge to the next level. This is definitely not something you want to start reading if you are new to the field, or even thinking about it.Cohesion in English (English Language Series) OverviewCohesion in English is concerned with a relatively neglected part of the linguistic system: its resources for text construction, the range of meanings that are speciffically associated with relating what is being spoken or written to its semantic environment. A principal component of these resources is 'cohesion'. This book studies the cohesion that arises from semantic relations between sentences. Reference from one to the other, repetition of word meanings, the conjunctive force of but, so, then and the like are considered. Further, it describes a method for analysing and coding sentences, which is applied to specimen texts.

Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech ReviewSapir's 1921 "Language" is one of the finest of many fine works by the distinguished linguist, anthropologist and humanist. With piercing yet accessible insight, he guides the reader through fundamental questions about language: How are culture and language related? How does language work? How do languages vary? Although there are many general introductions to the subject (Bloomfield's and Jesperson's volume come to mind), Sapir's is unmatched for sheer readability in interest. Highly recommended.Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech OverviewThis is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide. The Oxford Handbook of Computational Linguistics (Oxford Handbooks) ReviewThis `handbook' needs both hands to lift it! At 700+ pages and 38 chapters, detailed chapter-by-chapter review is impossible. Let me start with the top-level structure, which divides the book into three parts: Fundamentals; Processes, Methods and Resources; and Applications.
Part one, `Fundamentals', walks through the standard sub-disciplines of computational linguistics with chapter headings: phonology, morphology, lexicography, syntax, semantics, discourse, pragmatics and dialogue, formal grammars and languages, complexity theory. Each chapter is a short introduction and overview to the topic, aimed at the informed newcomer (i.e. it helps if you have a computer science/maths background and know about predicate logic and state machines).
Part two, `Processes, etc', covers a number of problem areas and techniques: text-segmentation, part-of-speech tagging, parsing, word-sense disambiguation, anaphora resolution, natural language generation and so on. There is little commonality between the chapters, but they are all informative.
The final part, `Applications' covers areas such as machine translation, information retrieval, text summarisation, second-language computer-assisted learning systems and spoken dialogue systems.
As a comprehensive, and relatively recent review of the whole field the book is excellent. Some points which caught my interest.
1. Speech and written language are hugely different, due to noise, self-repair, speech acts and discourse functions, accents and the strange `grammaticality' of utterances (p. 521).
2. The distinction between simpler finite-state dialogue models (machine-centric) vs. more dynamic planning-based dialogue managers (which can deal with mixed-initiative dialogue) - chapter 7.
3. The controversial role of real-world knowledge. This is different from semantics, which is more about representational and inferential adequacy. Chapter 25 on Ontologies surprising states "it is not clear to what extent NLP technology, in its current form, needs such ontologies and their complex knowledge representation systems". Apparently "large scale vocabularies with very limited reasoning are preferred". Interesting.
Human-to-human conversation seems, in performance, to be a unitary phenomenon. For scientific purposes, however, it has to be analysed into sub-fields, as in the chapter headings of part one. However, there is then both the problem of tunnel vision, and of scope creep: we see, for example, syntactic approaches expanding into the spaces of semantics and pragmatics in, to my mind, an unbalanced way.
I was most interested in Spoken Dialogue Systems, as these attempt to combine the state of the art in the separate disciplines into a unified architecture and implementation to address the original problem: a powerful constraint on one-sided development. The solution architectures seem to show that modular works, with bottom-up statistical techniques performing well at the speech-recognition level, and symbolic processing techniques such as automatic planning to achieve agent goals working at the dialogue level. The latter seems to be the least developed, however, as linguistics merges into a more general social agent theory.
The Oxford Handbook of Computational Linguistics (Oxford Handbooks) OverviewThirty-eight chapters, commissioned from experts all over the world, describe major concepts, methods, and applications in computational linguistics. Part I, Linguistic Fundamentals, provides an overview of the field suitable for senior undergraduates and non-specialists from other fields of linguistics and related disciplines. Part II describes current tasks, techniques, and tools in Natural Language Processing and aims to meet the needs of post-doctoral workers and others embarking on computational language research. Part III surveys current Applications. The book is a state-of-the-art reference to one of the most active and productive fields in linguistics. It will be of interest and practical use to a wide range of linguists, as well as to researchers in such fields as informatics, artificial intelligence, language engineering, and cognitive science.

Language, Literature and Critical Practice: Ways of Analysing Text (Interface) ReviewAs an undergraduate student of linguistics and literature, I found Birch's overview of the interplay between the two disciplines thorough, readable, and entirely unique. I would perhaps not recommend the book as an introduction to literary theory, critical theory, or stylistics. But for the reader already somewhat familiar with these fields, Birch offers an exciting (and provocative) way of thinking about how they interrelate. I didn't always agree with him, but he introduced many concepts (such as his proposition that I. A. Richards was engaged in a sort of proto-reader-response) that I found not only novel but useful. In short: Birch ties together alot of ideas from a lot of traditions in a coherent framework that makes for good reading.Language, Literature and Critical Practice: Ways of Analysing Text (Interface) OverviewUsing a wide-ranging variety of texts the author reviews and evaluates a broad range of approaches to textual commentary, introducing the reader to the fundamental distinction between`actual' and `virtual' worlds in critical practice.

Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian ReviewFirst, to correct this record, the Hawaiian Dictionary was written by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert. I have no idea who Mary Ann Spenser Pukui or Mara Kawena Pukui are supposed to be. These are typos that should immediately be corrected.
As for the validity of this dictionary, it has been the standard for more than 40 years. Anyone wishing to learn more about the Hawaiian language and culture should own this reference book. It is absolutely essential to own this book if you are considering naming anything or anyone (from dogs to boats to children) with a Hawaiian name. Hawaiian words have multiple meanings. A word that sounds lovely may have perjorative meanings that aren't readily apparent from other smaller dictionaries. Mary Kawena Pukui was the foremost expert on the Hawaiian language and culture, and this book is her legacy to those of us who love all things Hawaiian. Mahalo Kawena.Hawaiian Dictionary: Hawaiian-English, English-Hawaiian OverviewFor many years Hawaiian Dictionary has been the definitive and authoritative work on the Hawaiian language. Now this indispensable reference volume has been enlarged and completely revised. More than 3,000 new entries have been added to the Hawaiian-English section bringing the total number of entries to almost 30,000, and making it the largest and most complete of any Polynesian dictionary. Other additions and changes in this section include: a method of showing stress groups to facilitate pronunciation of Hawaiian words with more than three syllables; indication of parts of speech; current scientific names of plants; use of metric measurements; additional reconstructions; classical origins of loan words; and many added cross-references to enhance understanding of the numerous nuances of Hawaiian words. The English-Hawaiian section, a complement and supplement to the Hawaiian-English section, contains more than 12,500 entries and can serve as an index to hidden riches in the Hawaiian language. This new edition is more than a dictionary. Containing folklore, poetry, and ethnology, it will benefit Hawaiian studies for years to come.

Chomsky: Language, Mind, and Politics (Key Contemporary Thinkers) ReviewThis book gives a good overview of much of Chomsky's life work in linguistics, philosophy and politics. What it is not is an introduction into those topics, but neither is it written in a style that is overly academic. McGilvray seeks to integrate Chomsky's linguistic and political work somewhat and with a small amount of success, suggesting that they are intertwined and of course they are to a vague degree. That angle is interesting in its own way, but luckily the author does not force his hypothesis too much, instead he does a rather good job of overviewing and summarizing the main emphases of Chomsky's work in a cohesive and enlightening fashion. Probably not a necessary read for those who have read a lot of Chomsky's own works in both fields, but for those who haven't, or for people who simply enjoy reading in politics, philosophy and/or linguistics this book should make for interesting study.Chomsky: Language, Mind, and Politics (Key Contemporary Thinkers) OverviewThe key to Chomsky's overall intellectual project lies in what he has to say about a biologically based human nature.

The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature ReviewThe Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature by Steven Pinker
Is there a difference between the meanings of these two sentences?
(1) Hal loaded hay into the wagon, and,
(2) Hal loaded the wagon with hay.
Well, Steven Pinker claims there is a difference and it's a difference that reveals something about the way the mind conceptualizes experience. That is "the stuff of thought" with which Pinker's latest book is concerned, and this "stuff," as he convincingly demonstrates, can be made accessible through a careful analysis of "the stuff of language," i.e., word categories and their syntactic habitats.
In the case of the two sentences above, we can see the human capacity to frame events in alternate ways through the dual function of verbs like "load." This verb draws attention to the hay and its movement in the first sentence, but to the transformation (a kind of metaphorical "movement") of the wagon in the second.
That children can learn the dual use of "load" and the dual conceptualizations that it entails, and distinguish this verb from others (like, say, toss) that don't work in both sentences (E.g., we don't say "Hal tossed the wagon with hay" even though we can say "Hal tossed the hay into the wagon") is evidence that distinct ways of thinking underlie our ability to master language. There are, after all, many thousands of verbs that fall into scores of different categories based on their applicability to different contexts like those involving Hal's hay in the cases above. Pinker believes that our ability to learn the subtle distinctions that control these and other word usages is evidence of their role as reflectors and enablers of the basic elements of human thought, elements like causality, animation, possession, time-as-space, and so on.
Pinker faces quite a challenge in bringing to life profound truths about human nature through a systematic, fine-grained analysis of mundane words like "drip" and "pour," but he succeeds admirably. This is a book that will amply reward a careful reading.
Of course some words are inherently more interesting than others, and for my money the chapter on "The Seven Words You Can't Say on Television" is by itself worth the price of the book. A number of features that help condemn a word to the realm of taboo are revealed here. For example, there are clear syntactic distinctions between the usually unprintable words for sex (which Pinker, I'm happy to report, audaciously prints) and their more presentable cousins, such as have sex, make love, sleep together, copulate, etc. I had never before noticed that the taboo and vulgar forms, which tend to specify physical motion, differ from the non-taboo terms in that they usually occur in a subject-verb-direct object construction (e.g., Austin shagged Vanessa). The more respectable terms lack a direct object and do not specify "a particular manner of motion or effect." Furthermore, they are semantically symmetrical, so that if Austin had sex with Vanessa, Vanessa also had sex with Austin. More fundamentally Pinker ties the cathartic effect of some swearing with "the Rage circuit, which [is]... connected with negative emotion." The Rage circuit, as part of the limbic system, is found in other animals and is associated with "a reflex in which a suddenly wounded or confined animal would erupt in a furious struggle to startle, injure and escape from a predator, often accompanied by a bloodcurdling yowl."
This is rich stuff, the drawing of a neat connection between a specific category of words and an emotional pattern linked to specific parts of the brain. This chapter also helps make sense of Tourette's syndrome and otherwise identifies swearing as "a coherent neurobiological phenomenon." Other chapters are similarly rewarding. Pinker's analysis of metaphors both expands on, and, to an extent, revises the classic works in this field by George Lakoff, Mark Johnson and others.
I have some quibbles with parts of Pinker's overall model, but this is to be expected with a work so ambitious and wide-ranging. I am surprised, for example, that Pinker doesn't mention the extensive work on cognitive prototypes by such authors as Brent Berlin and Eleanor Rosch since their research seems to overlap with his.
Another point: His arguments against connectionist models of language and thought I found to be not quite convincing. Here Pinker is arguing for a genetically-based set of neural patterns to explain the complexities of language, where connectionism points to a more flexible, post-natal learning system. Pinker demonstrates that connectionism is probably not adequate to explain language learning if one assumes (as he apparently does) that learning after puberty is just as permanent as that which is learned in childhood. But such an assumption is unwarranted, and if childhood learning does have a special durability, his criticism of connectionism loses its punch.
Also, in discussing social change (part of his analysis of changing tastes in the naming of children), he cites data indicating that most disappearances such as the end of hat-wearing among men in the 1960s, were the natural outcome of a long and steadily declining trajectory for this fashion. However, there are so many distinctly abrupt social changes that can be identified in this era (including such linguistic ones as the disappearance of the basic slang term "swell" and its replacement by "cool") that this argument for gradual social change leaves me skeptical.
Naturally these are the kinds of disputable points that a book like this is bound to stir up, and that's, of course, all to the good. All in all, Pinker has succeeded, once again, in writing a book which, while effectively tackling a very knotty set of issues, manages to be both accessible and engaging. Five stars. The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature Overview
