Programming in Objective-C ReviewThis book is the most lucid book on programming I have ever read. Having a little (self-taught) experience in C, this book was recommended to me as a good foundation before trying to learn Cocoa for programming on Max OS X. I fully expected to be confronted with the sort of doorstopper that I would never finish, as has been the case with several C++ books; instead, I found a straightforward, uncluttered guide, written by somebody with a genuine talent for teaching.

The author takes the approach of not trying to teach you C first, and this has two advantages: first, if you have no C experience, you get started immediately learning Objective-C, so you don't get taught one thing only to be told to forget it later; second, if you do have some C experience, you are thrown into object-oriented programming right from the start. The explanations are consistently concise but clear, and I found myself getting through a chapter or two every night after work and feeling that I was learning something significant on every page. I read someone describe it elsewhere as "Teach Yourself Objective-C in 21 Days," except that this book really could live up to such a title. I wholeheartedly agree - it took me only three weeks to work through the whole book, including nearly all of the exercises. If, like me, you have seen terms such as "polymorphism", "inheritance", "instance method" and "subclassing" bandied around only to stare at them in mute incomprehension, this book is a revelation. The author introduces all such major concepts very gently - in fact they seem to creep up on you, so that by the time you are presented with the proper terminology you either already know what it means or find yourself exclaiming - as I did - "Oh, so that's all polymorphism is!"

My only gripe - and it is very minor - is that the explanations of bitwise operators and bitfields are near incomprehensible to anybody who doesn't have a programming background (or rather, they are explained well, but there is no indication of when you would ever use them), and the author does occasionally (though rarely) seem to assume that the reader has a solid maths background (when there are those of us out there from humanities and arts backgrounds who want to learn to program, too). These topics take up little more than several paragraphs of the 500 or so pages, though, so if you're a novice, don't let them daunt you as they are the exception rather than the rule.

One thing I appreciated about this book was that full code is provided for 99% of the examples - you are never left with an example that won't compile because the author assumed you could guess the rest yourself. Moreover, whilst the examples and exercises do develop on code from previous chapters - in particular, you will develop a Calculator, Fraction, and Rectangle class in the first part of the book, and AddressCard and AddressBook classes in the second part - the author wisely avoids the build-one-big-program approach that some books adopt. This keeps things fresh and lively - you have to type in different examples, meaning you become familiar with the language through repetition, but at the same time you are doing different things in the examples themselves. Moreover the exercises at the end of each chapter are well judged - you are forced to think and look back through the book to recap on what you have learned, and they are difficult without being too difficult. (Don't skip them!)

In the second part of the book, the author moves on to the Foundation framework, which forms half of Cocoa (Cocoa also uses the AppKit for creating GUI's). You will learn how to use NSString, NSArray, NSDictionary (and their mutable counterparts) and a lot more. It builds on everything you've learned in Part One and provides a bridge between the basics of Objective-C and moving on to Cocoa. I expect that this part of the book especially will become dog-eared very quickly. To sum up, this book took me from knowing nothing about Ojbective-C to feeling as though I could write all the background code for the app I have in mind (ie. everything except the GUI). I am now just hoping that Hillegass's book on Cocoa is half as good.

A word of advice: I urge anybody who buys this book to print off the errata on the author's website (the address is given in the book), as there are a few minor errors that might stump you if you don't. Also, if you use Xcode instead of the command-line tools, you will need to delete the contents of the automatically-generated ..._Prefix.pch file as well as the #import line at the top of main.m each time you start a project (the book only specifies the latter). The prefix file caused me some headaches in one of the later chapters.

A lot of people on various forums say that this is the only book from which to learn Objective-C, and I can see why. In short, if you are reading this review you are probably thinking about learning Objective-C, either for its own sake or as groundwork for moving on to Cocoa. Which means that if you are reading this review, you should buy this book.Programming in Objective-C OverviewProgramming in Objective-C is a concise, carefully written tutorial on the basics of Objective-C and object-oriented programming. The book makes no assumption about prior experience with object-oriented programming languages or with the C language (upon which Objective-C is based). And because of this, both novice and experienced programmers alike can use this book to quickly and effectively learn the fundamentals of Objective-C. Readers can also learn the concepts of object-oriented programming without having to first learn all of the intricacies of the underlying procedural language (C). This approach, combined with many small program examples and exercises at the end of each chapter, makes it ideally suited for either classroom use or self-study. Growth is expected in this language. At the January 2003 MacWorld, it was announced that there are 5 million Mac OS X users and each of their boxes ships with Objective-C built in.

Sams Teach Yourself MySQL in 10 Minutes ReviewI disagree enough with a couple of the other reviews that I decided to chime in. I found this to be a kick butt little MySQL primer. I just completed a couple-day LAMP project (where phpMyAdmin alone wouldn't save me this time), and this book provided me with enough information to get 'er done.
It's short and to the point. You can (literally) read a couple chapters in a few minutes.
Consider it a quick and handy complement piece to the official, online documentation.Sams Teach Yourself MySQL in 10 Minutes OverviewSams Teach Yourself MySQL in 10 Minutes provides a no-fluff, just-the-answers guide to building and managing MySQL databases. Interchange Intro Teacher's Resource Book (Interchange Third Edition) ReviewThe Cambridge Interchange series is undoubtedly the best course I have taught for beginning and intermediate students. The activities are engaging and relevant, the grammar is introduced in a way that is informative enough to resolve any pertinent questions, but in a very non-threatening way. I highly recommend the teacher's edition for instructors and the Full Contact edition for students.
By the way, don't make the same mistake I did and mistake this teacher's resource book for the teacher's edition. Teacher's resource book has a few extra activities and worksheets for each chapter, so it may be worth it or not for you to purchase it. I generally get on fine with just the teacher's edition, but since I have it now I'll make good use of it!Interchange Intro Teacher's Resource Book (Interchange Third Edition) OverviewInterchange Third edition is a four-level series for adult and young-adult learners of English from the beginning to the high-intermediate level. The Interchange Third EditionTeacher's Resource Book provides teachers with fun and engagingclassroom activities that supplement the material in the Student's Book. The book contains photocopiable activities for extra practice in listening, grammar, and vocabulary, with answers and audio scripts provided. An Audio CD is included for use with the listening section.

Human Resource Management ReviewThis was a simply stated book that gave common sense examples.
The chapters were easy to understand without having to have your professor explain everything.
There are a couple of chapters that seem like they should be reorganized, and a couple of chapters that should be put in a different order. Overall though, this is a very good book to help you understand Human Resource Management.Human Resource Management OverviewThis market-leading text provides thorough coverage of all the main areas of human resource management practice. The book is written from a practical perspective in a clear and engaging style. It includes full coverage of operational issues and introduces the major academic debates of relevance to the field. It is written as an introduction for students of HRM at all levels.

Word Crafting: Teaching Spelling, Grades K-6 ReviewThis is a great little book about spelling instruction. Good ideas, but would have liked more!Word Crafting: Teaching Spelling, Grades K-6 Overview
At long last, a spelling and vocabulary book written by a classroom teacher who's a literacy specialist, too!
Cindy Marten responds to the demand for "direct, systematic, and explicit phonics and spelling instruction" that goes way beyond what to teach - she addresses the questions of how, when, and why spelling should be taught. More important, she situates spelling within the contexts of real writing and the individual learner's needs.

In Word Crafting, Marten offers an approach that is at once playful, intellectual, and artful, engaging students in inquiry and wonder about words. "Word crafting" is analogous to the ways fine woodworkers develop their skills - through collecting the right tools, item by item, until they have a toolbelt full of them. The same is true for teaching spelling and here Marten supplies the tools, each one carefully selected for her students. Dip into her book for tools to:

assess and group students for effective instruction
engage them from the start in smart word study
help students learn high-frequency words, rules, patterns, and spelling demons
align your teaching with school, district, state, and national mandates.

Use these tools to set up word-crafting contexts that connect the study of words to authentic reading and writing. Craft a word study program that turns your students into more than good spellers - they'll be fine word crafters.

International Human Resources Management ReviewWithout previewing this book, I ordered it as the primary textbook for a graduate level course I was teaching in International HR Management. The table of contents looked comprehensive and since it was written by a couple of Australians, I thought it had to be good. Not so. Although the field of international human resource management is interesting and exciting, this book was not. Excessively wordy and academic, it was excruciatingly boring to read. My students unanimously gave it a thumbs-down.International Human Resources Management OverviewInternational Human Resource Management is a new edition of this market-leading text. Two new authors, Marion Festing and Allen Engle, make this new edition even more international than its predecessors. Changes include more coverage of small & medium enterprises, new material on managing diversity and cross-cultural workforces, new material on off-shoring, particularly to India or China, and a new chapter on sustaining global growth and linking the international HR function more firmly to companys' strategic growth plans. In addition the new edition includes a wealth of case study material and class discussion material. A full instructor's website is available to adopters.

Chomsky: Language, Mind, and Politics (Key Contemporary Thinkers) ReviewThis book gives a good overview of much of Chomsky's life work in linguistics, philosophy and politics. What it is not is an introduction into those topics, but neither is it written in a style that is overly academic. McGilvray seeks to integrate Chomsky's linguistic and political work somewhat and with a small amount of success, suggesting that they are intertwined and of course they are to a vague degree. That angle is interesting in its own way, but luckily the author does not force his hypothesis too much, instead he does a rather good job of overviewing and summarizing the main emphases of Chomsky's work in a cohesive and enlightening fashion. Probably not a necessary read for those who have read a lot of Chomsky's own works in both fields, but for those who haven't, or for people who simply enjoy reading in politics, philosophy and/or linguistics this book should make for interesting study.Chomsky: Language, Mind, and Politics (Key Contemporary Thinkers) OverviewThe key to Chomsky's overall intellectual project lies in what he has to say about a biologically based human nature.

A Practical Guide to Localization (Language International World Directory) ReviewIf you are a translator localizing software under Windows, this book is for you! Buy it first before other books you might get later. However, Esselink views the computing world as if only Windows is worth discussing. A few pages are devoted to the Mac crowd and the only other OS mentioned at all was SunOS, and only in passing. Given Windows' large market share in the desktop market, it deserves substantial coverage. However, it is only one competitor among many in the server and embedded systems markets. With the growth in the markets for wireless access (web enabled cellphones) and PDAs, ignoring other OSs is a serious oversight.
Esselink discusses the tools that will be used in the Windows environment and how to use them effectively. He deserves a great deal of praise for his thoroughness in that respect. I want to reiterate, if you are a translator localizing software under Windows, buy this book!
Programmers will find that the main value Esselink provides is a discussion of deliverables. He stresses some points that are independent of the tools used, such as glossaries and hints to guide the translators. For a programmer, this isn't the first book you should buy on internationalization and localization, but if you are the expert on it in your organization or you are a project manager responsible for scheduling it, buy this book! It won't show you how to write internationalized code. It will tell you what needs internationalization, what to deliver to your translators and when to deliver it.
This is a good book. For the audiences it addresses, it deserves 5 stars. Other audiences simply need to be aware that it may not be the book for them.A Practical Guide to Localization (Language International World Directory) OverviewA Practical Guide to Localization was written for translators, localization engineers, testing engineers, desktop publishers, projectmanagers, and anyone else who may be involved in the release ofmultilingual products. In this second edition, translators can learnmore on localizing software, online help, and documentation files, andon the latest translation technology tools. Localization engineerswill learn all about developing, engineering and testing software andonline help projects. For project managers, there is all theinformation needed in planning translation or localization projects, finding resources, and ensuring the quality of deliverables. New tothis second, fully updated and revised edition are chapters oninternationalization, desktop publishing, and software qualityassurance. The book has been designed as both a reference work and a teachingtool.Bert Esselink has been active in localization for over a decade. Aftergraduating in technical translation and taking university classes inprogramming and computational linguistics, he worked for several yearsas software localizer, localization engineer, and technical projectmanager at International Software Products. In 1996 he joined ALPNETin Amsterdam as localization manager, before taking on the role ofglobalization manager, developing internal production qualitystandards. In January 2000 Bert joined Lionbridge to head up theirglobalization consulting services.

The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) ReviewI've compared dozens of books about learning Russian from scratch, and this one is the best. There are advanced grammar texts out there which have more information, but they aren't geared toward beginners. The beauty of this book is that if you know absolutely nothing about Russian, you can start at the beginning and work your way through each lesson in the order presented, and by the time you're done, you will have a solid understanding of Russian grammar. Not only that, but you'll have a vocabulary of some of the most useful words in the Russian language.
When I first started studying Russian, I had no teachers or classes or cassette tapes to help me. My eighth grade math teacher gave me a copy of the original version of The Penguin Russian Course, which was compiled by J.L.I. Fennell and published in 1961. The methodology was logical and straightforward with no spoonfeeding or watered-down grammar lessons accompanied by cutsy cartoon pictures. In each lesson, you would first memorize a list of new vocabulary words. Then you would study several concise grammar principles which were clearly explained. Third, you would examine a brief Russian text which incorporated the new vocabulary and applied the new grammar principles which you had just learned in the lesson. Finally, you would translate an English text into Russian to test yourself on the new vocabulary and grammar. At the end of the book was a key which showed the correct translation of the English text into Russian, so you could check yourself.
This new version of the Penguin Russian Course is not as concise and straightforward as the first version, but it's actually better. Nicholas J. Brown has incorporated the original structure of J.L.I. Fennell's version enough that the effectiveness of the lessons is preserved, but Mr. Brown has added much more in this modern version. He has provided numerous additional Russian texts and conversations so that you can see how the vocabulary is used in context. And in this new version, the answer keys at the back of the book show the Russian-English translation as well as the English-Russian translation of the exercises.
The best part of this book is the translation exercises at the end of each lesson and their corresponding answer keys at the back of the book. Translation is probably the best way to test whether or not you really understand the grammar and vocabulary taught in the lessons, and this book gives you plenty of opportunities to test yourself in this manner.
Another advantage of this book is that it's small enough to carry anywhere, unlike those bulky Russian 101 textbooks used in college classes which use a slow, watered-down, almost infantile approach to teaching the language.
If you want to learn Russian, buy this book and work through the lessons. The only major drawback is that you'll never really learn proper pronunciation without listening to native Russians speak the language, and this book doesn't have tapes to accompany it. Other than that, however, you won't find a better book for beginners who want to learn Russian. The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) OverviewWhether you're learning alone or attending classes, you'll find this complete Russian language course for beginners both accessible and indispensable. Designed to provide the student with an excellent command of basic Russian (the equivalent of A level standard) this book features thirty lessons punctuated by revision exercises to ensure you have fully understood what you have learned. The emphasis is on acquiring vocabulary, experiencing conversational language and learning useful grammar. This book also includes a vocabulary of 1,500 words and a glossary of grammatical terms.

Mind Performance Hacks: Tips & Tools for Overclocking Your Brain ReviewThis book is based on information that can be found at the Mentat Wiki and consists of 75 tips and methods for helping you organize your thought processes and exercise your brain so that you think more efficiently. Some of them are well-known brain exercises, and some are not so well known. I had seen most of the memory hacks before, with the exception of the one on the "tip of the tongue" effect. In the section on creativity, I enjoyed the hack on looking at your brain as a random number generator that needs seeding by doing such tasks as picking up a magazine that you wouldn't normally look at and then reading it. I also liked the hack on learning Morse code like an efficiency expert. Although the task itself is of dubious value, the process teaches the reader the value of mnemonics which is, as the author puts it, is like putting Windows on top of DOS. The final chapter, on overall mental fitness, is of particular use to us baby-boomers as it reminds us not to neglect the essentials of basic overall physical health since this has a powerful effect on the brain. I really enjoyed this little book, since it has so many ways to expand your brain power and creativity that can easily be incorporated into your daily life.
The table of contents is not shown by Amazon, so I list the table of contents/hacks here:

Language and Problems of Knowledge: The Managua Lectures (Current Studies in Linguistics) ReviewReasonably quick read. Restates language as a side-effect of the brain's syntaxial approach in expressing thought.Language and Problems of Knowledge: The Managua Lectures (Current Studies in Linguistics) OverviewLanguage and Problems of Knowledge is Noam Chomsky's most accessiblestatement on the nature, origins, and current concerns of the field of linguistics. He frames the lectures with four fundamental questions: What do we know when we areable to speak and understand a language? How is this knowledge acquired? How do weuse this knowledge? What are the physical mechanisms involved in the representation, acquisition, and use of this knowledge?Starting from basic concepts, Chomskysketches the present state of our answers to these questions and offers prospectsfor future research. Much of the discussion revolves around our understanding ofbasic human nature (that we are unique in being able to produce a rich, highlyarticulated, and complex language on the basis of quite rudimentary data), and it ishere that Chomsky's ideas on language relate to his ideas on politics. The initialversions of these lectures were given at the Universidad Centroamericana in Managua,Nicaragua, in March 1986. A parallel set of lectures on contemporary politicalissues given at the same time has been published by South End Press under the titleOn Power and Ideology: The Managua Lectures.Noam Chomsky is Institute Professor ofLinguistics and Philosophy at MIT. Language and Problems of Knowledge is sixteenthin the series Current Studies in Linguistics, edited by Jay Keyser.

Ponto de Encontro: Portuguese as a World Language ReviewAfter over a decade away from teaching foreign languages, I was asked to teach Portuguese (my native language) to a North American friend. When I used to teach English and Portuguese as a foreign language, there was huge gap between the quality of the EFL books (communication and usage oriented, dynamic, attractive) and the Portuguese ones (translation - grammar based, boring, filled with language no-one actually uses...).
I was dismayed with what looked like no evolution at all during the last 15 yeards until I came accross Ponto de Encontro. It's attractive, easy to adapt to different audiences (with exercises that challenge more or less to choose from), features great authentic and natural materials and invites students to reflect and learn actively. The companion website is great with self-correcting exercises that are a great aid for students wanting to advance on their own. There are Brazilian and Portuguese separate tracks and exercises which make it a viable book to use by both audiences.
I just wish the publishers would be easier to communicate with if you're a private teacher not affiliated with a school, which is the case of many of us. I just can't get a hold of them and am interested in examining the test and activity books and there's no way to log in if you're not affiliated with an institution.
All in all though, it's by far the best Portuguese as a Foreign language book available out there. Not that the competition is stiff, but even if it were, it would still be in the running!
Ponto de Encontro: Portuguese as a World Language OverviewPonto de Encontro is the first Portuguese language textbook that gives the student the choice to learn either Brazilian or European Portuguese. While it seeks to emphasize commonalities, Ponto also highlights and preserves important differences in both vocabulary and grammar. This program provides an ample, flexible, communication-oriented framework for a beginning or intermediate student of Portuguese.

Easy & Engaging ESL Activities and Mini-Books for Every Classroom: Terrific Teaching Tips, Games, Mini-Books & More to Help New Students from Every Nation Build Basic English Vocabulary and Feel Welcome ReviewAs a teacher of young learners, I struggle to find resources that truly meet the needs of my students, most of whom are just beginning to read and write in English. This book, however, has proven to be a goldmine. Kids and parents alike love the make-and-take books, while I love the flexibility of each unit. I've used the simple drawings to make charts, flashcards, games, etc. to accompany thematic units and have even used a few of the worksheets to review basic concepts with older kids. I'm giving the book a four instead of a five because the unit topics are quite basic. Once students know colors, numbers, letters, shapes, body parts, basic food items, and basic school terminology, this book basically goes back on the shelf until you get your next room full of beginners. But if you teach young learners with limited language skills, this book is a must have.Easy & Engaging ESL Activities and Mini-Books for Every Classroom: Terrific Teaching Tips, Games, Mini-Books & More to Help New Students from Every Nation Build Basic English Vocabulary and Feel Welcome OverviewNot sure how to teach a student who speaks only a little English or none at all? This quick and easy guide can help with tips for preparing for your new student, assessing the child's needs and abilities, communicating with the student's family, and much more. For use with Grades 1-4.

The Modern English-Nihongo Dictionary: A Comprehensive New Japanese Language Resource ReviewI think I've got copies of most of the popular Japanese dictionaries for English-speaking learners - the Kenkyusha, Collins Shubun and a few others. Of course I also have several dictionaries designed for Japanese learners of English. These are useful for extracting some more obscure words and phrases but of course they're edited with Japanese native speakers in mind. I've been using the Modern English-Nihongo dictionary for more than two years now and can throughly recommend it to Japanese language learners who reject the somewhat fascist notion that one must only study, learn and look-up words in the Japanese hiragana/katakana/kanji scripts. This dictionary has them all. Example sentences written in 'romanji' then in orthodox Japanese script including kanji with the furigana readings written above in superscipt. Each page also has either a kanji readings box or a short cultural note (these are indexed). The editors have tried to list as many of the kanji as possible on the same page as their English equivalent - but this is not always possible. The boxes only list the first 1006 kanji studied in Japanese elementary school, but if you're a serious student of kanji then this dictionary is NOT for you. If ever there was a dictionary that deserved to be transformed into an electronic dictionary alongs the lines of the Canon Wordtank then this is the one. Then there might finally be an English to Japanese electronic dictionary accessible to learners of all levels. The Modern English-Nihongo Dictionary: A Comprehensive New Japanese Language Resource OverviewThe Modern English-Nihongo Dictionary is an invaluable new reference tool -- a dictionary designed to help students of the Japanese language learn through the familiar thought processes of native English speakers.
All 6,000-plus entries -- selected from the most frequently used English vocabulary -- are followed by Japanese equivalents in both standard Japanese with furigana pronunciation guides and roman characters. At least one sample sentence or phrase accompanies the majority of the entries, all of which appear in English and in both standard and romanized Japanese. Where appropriate, a detailed explanation of related Japanese words and kanji compounds has been added to encourage greater fluency.
Much more than a bilingual lexicon, The Modem English-Nihongo Dictionary includes over 1,000 mini kanji guides, hundreds of notes on Japanese culture and tradition, and a generous helping of essential information regarding differences between Japanese and English in meaning or usage.
Students at all levels of Japanese proficiency will hail this innovative new dictionary with relief, as a welcome aid in the study of a difficult language.
