Learning to Write with Purpose: Effective Instruction in Grades 4-8 (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewThe written word has to have a reason behind it or it is worthless. "Learning to Write With Purpose: Effective Instruction in Grades 4-8" is a guide for educators teaching elementary and middle school age students how to give their writing purpose and meaning. Writing is communication, and learning to use that communication to display thoughts and ideas is an absolutely invaluable skill. Packed cover to cover with advice for educators, "Learning to Write with Purpose" is a solid addition to community library education collections with a focus on language arts.Learning to Write with Purpose: Effective Instruction in Grades 4-8 (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewCommunicating ideas and information is what makes writing meaningful-yet many upper elementary and middle school students write in a vacuum, without considering the aims of their writing or the needs of their readers. This highly informative, teacher-friendly book presents a fresh perspective on writing instruction along with practical methods for the classroom. Teachers learn ways to promote the skills and strategies needed to write and revise effectively in a range of genres: personal narratives, fiction, and poetry; persuasive, explanatory, and "how-to" writing; and writing for high-stakes tests. Special features include vivid classroom vignettes, examples of student work, evaluation guidelines, and suggested "mentor texts" that model different genres.

Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy ReviewAgain, Fountas and Pinnell have helped teachers with their incredible insight on educating children. This time their help/advice/knowledge focuses on grades 3-6 but do not let that stop you if you teach another grade level. Their information on the essential components of a quality literacy program is true for any grade level. Fountas and Pinnell offer suggestions for effectively helping readers and writers who are not meeting "standard". These suggestions are specific and establish teaching practices that will help all readers and writers. They also give many mini lesson ideas and great literature connections that make a teacher's job easier. The appendices include forms for language/word study for both reading and writing and for literary assessment. Once again, their book ends with a valuable book list that is leveled. This book is an essential resource for all teachers.Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy OverviewAuthors Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell have already helped hundreds of thousands of K-3 teachers engage, inform, and inspire early readers and writers. Now, with Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6), Fountas and Pinnell support teachers on the next leg of the literacy journey, addressing the unique challenges of teaching upper elementary students.
The product of many years of work with classroom teachers, Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6) is one of the most comprehensive, authoritative guides available today. It explores all the essential components of a quality literacy program in six separate sections:
Breakthrough to Literacy: Fountas and Pinnell present the basic structure of the language/literacy program within a breakthrough framework that encompasses the building of community through language, word study, reading, writing, and the visual arts. The framework plays out as three "blocks," which can be interpreted as conceptual units as well as segments of time within the school day. Specific information on how to structure a reading and writing workshop is provided. A practical chapter on organizing and managing the classroom will help you implement the principles in your own classroom.
Independent Reading: It is essential for students to develop interests and tastes as readers, selecting books for themselves every day. Fountas and Pinnell devote four chapters to independent reading, exploring how to structure teaching, minilessons, conferences, groupshare, and ways to use response journals as part of a reading workshop.
Guided Reading: The chapters in this section provide detailed information on planning for guided reading, dynamic grouping for effective teaching, and selecting, introducing, and using leveled texts. Fountas and Pinnell describe characteristics of texts related to difficulty and ways to organize texts in your classroom and school.
Literature Study: This section of the book discusses how to make students' experiences with literature as rich as possible. The authors offer specific suggestions for forming groups, guiding student choices, and establishing and teaching routines for literature discussion. A full chapter explores reader response and ways to help readers dig deep to uncover the meaning of texts.
Teaching for Comprehension and Word Analysis: This detailed look at the reading process explores both oral and silent reading, processes and behaviors related to comprehension, and ways to help students construct meaning. Included are twelve systems for sustaining the reading process and expanding meaning, plus discussions of the important areas of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.
The Reading and Writing Connection: These chapters showcase the instructional contexts - poetry, writer's notebooks, writer's talks, genre, content literacy, and student research - that support students in connected reading and writing. An informative overview of the characteristics of fiction and nonfiction will help you teach students to read and write a variety of genre. What's more, the authors suggest ways to help students learn the "genre" of testing and perform the kinds of reading and writing tasks that tests require. They also detail the continuous thoughtful assessment that guides all aspects of effective teaching.
A special feature appears at the end of each section, in which Fountas and Pinnell provide indispensable suggestions for working with struggling readers and writers.

Your Core Reading Program & Children's Literature: Grades 4-6: Effective Strategies for Using the Best of Both ReviewI think that this book is a must have for all intermediate teachers who are looking for a better way to use their basal readers. The book give specific examples from 4-6 basal texts and gives great ideas on how to expand those singular basal excerpts and go deep. The main purpose is to engage students in authentic reading and writing experiences that will help them to develop important skill necessary to become the critical thinking students we teachers want them to become.
Your Core Reading Program & Children's Literature: Grades 4-6: Effective Strategies for Using the Best of Both OverviewThrough this pragmatic approach to core reading programs and literature-based instruction teachers are offered opportunities to effectively use both to enhance their students' literacy instruction and learning. The authors select various sample themes and lessons from existing core programs. From this base, they show multiple ways that teachers can extend these initial learnings to more complex, deeper understandings. Similar to core reading programs, the authors provide multiple ways to extend the core reading experience, where teachers can choose what best fits the needs of their students. For use with Grades 4-6.

Engaging Readers & Writers with Inquiry (Theory and Practice) ReviewWhen we were kids -- and this is true of both all teachers and all students -- we actually WANTED to learn. We asked questions galore. We were curious about things that interested us, and we were relentless in putting together the pieces or engaging the experts (Mom, Coach, the camp windsurfing counselor) necessary to get our answers. So, what happened to all that enthusiasm once the kid moved on to the classroom? Jeffrey Wilhelm (and the vast body of research he cites) has some answers in his new must-read-if-you're-a-teacher book, ENGAGING READERS & WRITERS WITH INQUIRY.
Wilhelm's book is, hands down, one of the "meatiest" resources I've read. The initial chapters go over definitions and research to give you a foundation in inquiry's history and latest manifestations, but after that it is one practical strategy after another, each rich with examples from Wilhelm's own classes.
The heart of the inquiry method is questioning. Wilhelm teaches us to build "inquiry units" by creating "guiding questions" that students are actually curious about and want to answer during the unit. He also shows how these open-ended questions should be constructed (tips and pitfalls are included) so that they relate not only to your educational goals, but to the kids' lives and our shared world. Here we are putting the "fascinated kid" back into the "formerly bored student." Once you have the question(s), you move to designing the final product(s), followed by the creation of all of those formative tasks (from simpler to more complex) used to get to that final product (this is known in educational circles as "backwards planning").
As you get into the heart of the book, Wilhelm offers an array of strategies, including secret prompts; walkarounds; entrance and exit tickets; and before, during, and after questions. He gets into questioning schemes that take students up the ladder of complexity. Some of the schemes involve mentoring the students so that THEY ultimately create schematic questions for each other. So if you think you really learn something by preparing materials to teach it, consider the benefits in teaching your KIDS to do this for each other, thanks to your modelling and mentoring.
Among the questioning schemes Wilhelm covers are "The Questioning Circle," "ReQuest," and "QARs, or Question-Answer Relationships." Then he focuses on author-reader transactions by sharing two authorial reading strategies utilizing inquiry, one called "QtA, or Questioning the Author," and the other called "Hillock's Questioning Hierarchy," which is George Hillock's ladder of increasing complexity. Hillock's Questioning Hieraarchy does for reading what Bloom's Taxonomy does for education as a whole. If you're tearing your hair out trying to get kids to grow more adept at literary analysis, you've hit paydirt at last.
In the final chapter, Wilhelm demonstrates how all of these inquiry-based strategies can be used across the disciplines. He provides examples from math, science, and social studies, proving that inquiry's applications go way beyond the province of language arts. He also makes a point of providing examples from Grades 4 all the way up to high school. All of this work can be customized to fit the age-group you teach.
Bottom line: This is a great book for a community of teachers to read and discuss. I plan on buying copies for two of my fellow teachers (same discipline), so we can roll up our sleeves and go to work on making our units inquiry-based. I'm convinced it will show results and know that, once I've migrated to this method, my students will not only be happier, they'll be smarter and more enthusiastic. In fact, they'll be a lot like that little kid they once were -- the one who not only paid attention to stuff, she kept asking, "Why?" until she was fully satisfied.
Engaging Readers & Writers with Inquiry (Theory and Practice) OverviewWhat makes a good relationship? How does flight influence behavior for humans and birds? Is it ever permissible to lie? Reframing our units and lessons with questions such as these makes learning more exciting for students. Wilhelm debunks the myth that teaching through inquiry is hard. He shares practical, easy ideas for turning state standards into engaging authentic questions that propel students toward deep understandings. Includes sample lessons, discussion techniques, and questioning schemes for all the content areas. For use with Grades 4 & Up.

Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition ReviewWhatever your reasons are for wanting to study Japanese, you'd do well to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Some people go for the spoken-only approach, but I've found that learning hiragana, katakana, and a lot of the kanji has definitely improved by retention of Japanese vocabulary. Many Japanese words include kanji (for example, the word "nihon" for Japan is the combination of the kanji for "sun" and the kanji for "origin"), so knowing what the words literally mean will help increase your understanding of Japanese overall.
After learning hiragana and katakana (the syllabaries of Japanese; much simpler than kanji, these are sound-based rather than meaning-based), you'll want to integrate kanji into your study of the language. That's where this book comes in. The 1,006 Essential Characters are listed by grade (1st through 6th). Each of these kanji entries includes: the stroke order, Japanese pronunciations, meanings in English, and three examples of the kanji contained in Japanese words. The 1,945 General Use Characters are listed by stroke-order (1 through 23); this includes all of the kanji of the 1,006 set plus those other general use characters not taught in 1st through 6th grade. A hiragana and katakana chart is also included, as well as an index sorted by pronunciation in the back.
This book makes a great reference for teaching yourself the kanji. Of course, you shouldn't expect to end up using this book alone for learning the kanji; it's more helpful for review and reference. There are plenty of resources on-line and several other books that would be helpful to use in conjunction with this book. For example, Kanji Pict-o-Graphix encourages mnemonic, visual memorization and Japanese For Everyone focuses on both written and conversational Japanese. However, this book serves the purpose it was created for: to provide clear and succinct entries for the Joyo kanji so you can learn how to write and understand them. It is an essential reference that every Japanese-language learner should own.Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition OverviewA best-seller trusted by beginning and intermediate students since 1959 and now in its third edition, this affordable study guide includes all 1,945 current joyo kanji. Detailed entries for all 1,009 "essential" kanji include stroke order, meanings, and pronunciation.

Bravo to Deborah White for creating a tool that teachers can actually use without having to rewrite the book.Assessment First: Using Just-Right Assessments to Plan and Carry Out Effective Reading Instruction OverviewTo maximize the impact of your teaching, follow the assess-plan-teach model, teachers are told, yet they receive little support in putting this model into action. Word Matters: Teaching Phonics and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom ReviewClear, to-the-point, and full of great ideas to help those who work with elementary children learning to read. The feature I like best is the built in professional development suggestions to use the book within a building, a grade or a district as an inservice tool. Don't miss this one!Word Matters: Teaching Phonics and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom Overview In 1996, Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas presented Guided Reading, the most comprehensive guided reading resource ever published. Hailed for its practical, systematic approach, the book showed hundreds of thousands of teachers how to address the needs of the whole classroom as well as individual readers. Now, with the publication of Word Matters, Pinnell and Fountas offer K-3 teachers the same unparalleled support, this time focusing on phonics and spelling instruction. Word Matters presents essential information on designing and implementing a high-quality, systematic literacy program to help children learn about letters, sounds, and words. The central goal is to teach children to become "word solvers": readers who can take words apart while reading for meaning, and writers who can construct words while writing to communicate. Where similar books are narrow in focus, Word Matters presents the theoretical underpinnings and practical wherewithal of word study in three contexts: word study that includes systematically planned and applied experiences focusing on the elements of letters and words writing, including how children use phoneme-grapheme relationships, word patterns, and principles to develop spelling ability reading, including teaching children how to solve words with the use of phonics and visual-analysis skills as they read for meaning. Each topic is supported with a variety of practical tools: reproducible sheets for a word study system and for writing workshop; lists of spelling minilessons; and extensive word lists, including frequently used words, antonyms, synonyms, and more. Armed with these tools-and the tried-and-true wisdom of Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas-teachers can help students develop not just the "essential skills," but also a joyful appreciation of their own literacy.

Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI am an educator who recently had to overhaul and redesign a large-scale vocabulary instruction program. The information in this book was invaluable to me. I found it to be accurate, insightful, actionable, well-organized, and comprehensive.
As another teacher suggested, this book is not full of teaching activities, lesson plans, or word lists. (If you want that kind of book, you might try The Vocabulary Teacher's Book of Lists.) It is, however, full of big-picture facts and credible answers to important questions. It gave me confidence in my approach and helped me make many decisions. It also helped me plan teacher training.
If you are teaching in a traditional classroom setting with an established curriculum and an established set of practices, this book will probably not change the way you teach very much (although it might be interesting). However, if you are making larger-scale decisions about your vocabulary program, this book is a wonderful resource.Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewThis highly practical book presents research-based approaches to building students' vocabulary and promoting a lifelong appreciation of words. Prominent researchers identify and discuss the multiple components of effective vocabulary instruction--teaching the meanings of specific words, teaching students strategies for learning new words on their own, and providing opportunities for word and language play. In every chapter, findings on the processes of successful vocabulary learning are translated into useful, effective instructional activities and techniques. Outlined are important new ideas for designing curricula and providing experiences that help students of all ages and skill levels gain access to the meanings of words that they read. Throughout, engaging classroom examples enhance the utility of this teacher-friendly resource.

25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing (Grades 3-6) ReviewThis book is fantastic! Our son (age 9) is extremely bright and a good reader and has always been an excellent student. Now in 3rd grade, there is an emphasis on writing in his classroom and for some reason he developed what the teacher described as a "mental block" about writing, because he didn't know how to get started. He would get anxious and upset and end up in tears, saying "I don't know what to write."
I bought a few different books to help with the challenge, and this book was by far the most valuable. It got him past his mental block. He and I do one mini-lesson each week at home, on the weekends when we are relaxed. The mini-lessons are short, focused and fun. In just a few short weeks, our son has made progress both at home and in the classroom. I even consulted with a professional tutor in our area, who said that we were on the right track by using this book - she was very impressed with it.
Thank you Adele Fiderer!25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing (Grades 3-6) Overview25 quick lessons on choosing and focusing topics, writing titles and leads that entice readers, crafting great endings, using details, showing character's feelings, clarifying fuzzy writing, getting rid of repetition, finding strong verbs, writing sentences with a sense of rhythm, and more. Instant Word Practice Book, Grades K-3: Center Activities, Spelling Activities, Word Wall Ideas, and Assessment ReviewI have many of Dr. Fry's series of spelling and vocabulary books. This is one of the best! I spent months making up my own activities for my weekly spelling words, only to discover that this book would've done it for me!
I like that there are two sets of word searches for each week's words. One has the words listed only horizontally, while the other word search is much more challenging. I also like that there are cut-apart sheets listing the words, so the children can study using flashcards at home.
All in all, one of Dr. Fry's best!Instant Word Practice Book, Grades K-3: Center Activities, Spelling Activities, Word Wall Ideas, and Assessment Overview

Multiliteracies in Motion: Current Theory and Practice ReviewReview by Lesley Ljungdahl (UTS):Multiliteracies in Motion: Current theory and practice makes an excellent contribution to understanding the nature of literacy in the 21st century. Trainee and practising teachers will find inspiration to transform and/or enrich their teaching so that it meets the needs of their students who have grown up in a world of digital technology. Well known researchers (Allan Luke, Peter Freebody, Len Unsworth, Cope & Kalantzis, Bull & Anstey) offer stimulating ideas to utilise technology in classrooms and to explore the field of multiliteracies. The move from the study of the printed text to the inclusion of multimedia/visual literacy has already transformed teaching, even if assessment practices still lag behind. The four parts of the books highlight underlying socio-cultural factors and promote interdisciplinarity. These relate to classrooms, literary theory, pedagogy and multiliteracies in practice.Opening up our minds to change is achieved by this book which introduces us to the challenge of emerging media and diverse ways of teaching literacy. Readers will discover new insights, prompted by the research and thinking of this diverse collection of scholarship from many countries.Multiliteracies in Motion: Current Theory and Practice OverviewThe realities of new technological and social conditions since the 1990s demand a new approach to literacy teaching. Looking onward from the original statement of aims of the multiliteracies movement in 1996, this volume brings together top-quality scholarship and research that has embraced the notion and features new contributions by many of the originators of this approach to literacy. Drawing on large research projects and empirical evidence, the authors explore practical and educational issues that relate to multiliteracies, such as assessment, pedagogy and curriculum. The viewpoint taken is that multiliteracies is a complementary socio-cultural approach to the new literacies that includes pedagogy and learning. The differences are addressed from a multiliteracies perspective - one that does not discount or undermine the new literacies, but shows new ways in which they are complementary. Computers and the internet are transforming the way we work and communicate and the very notion of literacy itself. This volume offers frontline information and a vital update for those wishing to understand the evolution of multiliteracies and the current state of literacy theory in relation to it.

Week-by-Week Homework for Building Reading Comprehension and Fluency, Grades 3-6: 30 Reproducible, High-Interest Passages for Kids to Read Aloud at HomeNWith Companion Activities ReviewI have studied many reading books for my children. I cannot say enough good things about this one. Everybody seems to know what reading is about. Many parents buy reading materials without much thought. This book is about reading with "intention" and "purpose". It's skill-building drills with clear methods and objectives. It will boost your child's true ability effectively many other books won't do. It benefited my 4th grader so much that I bought another copy for my 2nd grader's future use. Before 3rd grade, I recommend the online weekly drills provided by Beestar (www.beestar.org). They are common in that reading skill objectives and techniques are meshed into nice informative material. Your child gets both in one run.
Week-by-Week Homework for Building Reading Comprehension and Fluency, Grades 3-6: 30 Reproducible, High-Interest Passages for Kids to Read Aloud at HomeNWith Companion Activities OverviewCan a once-a-week homework activity really boost reading fluency and comprehension? Yes! One-page reading passages, a couple of quick comprehension activities, and a parent's signature are all you need to ensure success. Classroom Reading Inventory with Teacher Resource CD-ROM and Inventory Administration Kit ReviewThis is a great diagnostic tool to get a grasp on a student's reading skills and deficits. I like how it gives their frustration, independent, and instructional reading levels.
I would recommend this informal inventory to tutors, teachers, and mentors.Classroom Reading Inventory with Teacher Resource CD-ROM and Inventory Administration Kit OverviewThis classic resource is ideal for pre-service and in-service teachers who use an informal reading inventory test to help identify student reading problems. It is brief and easy to use, with a spiral-bound format. The "CRI (Classroom Reading Inventory)" is especially useful for teachers who have little or no experience with informal reading inventories; it can be administered in fifteen minutes or less. Forms A and C follow a sub skills format and Form B follows a reader response format, predicting and retelling stories. This edition is accompanied by more supplements than any other inventory on the market.
