Your Core Reading Program & Children's Literature: Grades 4-6: Effective Strategies for Using the Best of Both ReviewI think that this book is a must have for all intermediate teachers who are looking for a better way to use their basal readers. The book give specific examples from 4-6 basal texts and gives great ideas on how to expand those singular basal excerpts and go deep. The main purpose is to engage students in authentic reading and writing experiences that will help them to develop important skill necessary to become the critical thinking students we teachers want them to become.
Your Core Reading Program & Children's Literature: Grades 4-6: Effective Strategies for Using the Best of Both OverviewThrough this pragmatic approach to core reading programs and literature-based instruction teachers are offered opportunities to effectively use both to enhance their students' literacy instruction and learning. The authors select various sample themes and lessons from existing core programs. From this base, they show multiple ways that teachers can extend these initial learnings to more complex, deeper understandings. Similar to core reading programs, the authors provide multiple ways to extend the core reading experience, where teachers can choose what best fits the needs of their students. For use with Grades 4-6.

Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School ReviewWe've homeschooled for 13 years. I co-founded a homeschool group and buy for the group's library. I purchase many books every month and read even more than I buy. If I had to chose what two books I wouldn't be without, my choice would be two authored by Rebecca Rupp, this book and The Complete Home Learning Source Book.
In our homeschool group the comment I hear most from other parents about homeschooling is "I'm just not sure we're on track". Home Learning Year by Year provides the information parents need to guage if they are covering what their child needs to learn. I'm a believer in letting the child's abilities set the pace but by using Rebecca Rupp's book, I have now made a checklist of what I want my children to cover and I have confidence that we're on track.
If you don't homeschool your child, you'll still want this book. As a former special education teacher, I remember parent meetings where parents were lost about whether their child was being taught what he/she needed to learn. Home Learning Year by Year can guide parents in taking charge and making good choices for their child's education regardless of whether that education takes place in the home or in a classroom setting.
The book gives the most complete listing of education goals grade by grade I've seen in any book. Ms Rupp suggests resources for each grade and its apparent to me that her suggestions and her goals have been carefully researched.Home Learning Year by Year: How to Design a Homeschool Curriculum from Preschool Through High School OverviewFinally, homeschoolers have a comprehensive guide to designing a homeschool curriculum, from one of the country's foremost homeschooling experts. , Rebecca Rupp presents a structured plan to ensure that your children will learn what they need to know when they need to know it, from preschool through high school. Based on the traditional pre-K through 12th-grade structure, Home Learning Year by Year features:The integral subjects to be covered within each grade Standards for knowledge that should be acquired by your child at each levelRecommended books to use as texts for every subjectGuidelines for the importance of each topic: which knowledge is essential and which is best for more expansive study based on your child's personal interestsSuggestions for how to sensitively approach less academic subjects, such as sex education and physical fitness

Daily Math Practice, Grade 3 ReviewI'm a firm believer of practice early on math. It will build kid's interest and confidence for the long run. This book is invaluable. It breaks grade 3 math into small pieces and let your child do a little every day. My daughter learned a lot from this book. She often asks further questions and thinks a lot more. It helped her do well in math. In the Beestar online math contest (a nice web site http://www.beestar.org), she often wins honor mentions. Very good math supplement.Daily Math Practice, Grade 3 OverviewYour grade 3 students will build mastery and retention by applying these lessons for as little as 15 minutes a day. Practice computation, word problems, and dozens of other important math skills are covered, all in a range of difficulty appropriate for grade 3. There are 36 weeks worth of lessons, each divided as follows. Practice five items a day Monday through Thursday: two computation problems two items that practice a variety of math skills one word problem Friday's lesson contains a single problem that is more extensive and may require multiple steps. These problems emphasize reasoning and communication in mathematics. Daily Math Practice, Grade 3 includes practice lessons on the following topics: Computation addition & subtraction facts column addition multiplication & division facts multi-digit addition & subtraction w/o regrouping multi-digit addition & subtraction w/ regrouping multi-digit by 1-digit multiplication w/o regrouping multi-digit by 1-digit multiplication w/ regrouping 2-digit by 1-digit division w/o remainders 2-digit by 1-digit division w/ remainders solve word problems Number write number sentences write word problems read & write numbers read & write number words round numbers to nearest thousand place value count by two, threes, etc. odd/even ordinal numbers estimation greater/less than, equal to properties, number relationships fractions & decimals Patterns create, name, describe, extend Geometry shapes symmetry congruency perimeter area line segments, angles Measurement weight & capacity time linear measure money Data read & interpret graphs create graphs The page for each day features a place for the student to enter his or her name. (accompanied by a diagram of a building with 8 walls of various lengths, indicated in meters). There is an answer key for each week and a scope and sequence chart. The scope and sequence charts detail the specific skills to be practiced and show when they will be presented. The skills included are those found in math texts at each level. Irresistible A, B, Cs (Grades PreK-K) ReviewAlthough I don't teach Letter of the Week, I still use a LOT of fun activities for individual letters throughout the year. The main difference between the old Letter of the Week approach and what I'm doing in my room is twofold:

1. I do every letter every day, as opposed to waiting weeks into the school year to "teach" individual letters.

2. My teaching is planned around thematic units, instead of around the letters of the alphabet.

I'm always looking for new activities that will help my students learn the letters and sounds, and build on prior knowledge. "Irresistable ABC's" has more than 50 fun, multi-sensory activities that incorporate all the learning styles found in most classrooms, and present alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness/phonics activities using many of the "other" important tools we are teaching our students, including Graphing and Visual Organizers, making Big Books and Little Books, Shared Writing and Language Experience activities, working with names activities, and dozens more.

Many of the activities are extensions for familiar literature you're already using, like "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and "26 Letters and 99 Cents."

Novelli collected the activities from teachers around the country and has a nice balance of activities suitable to pre-K through 2nd grade classrooms. This is a book I think most teachers will enjoy, filled with activities to build on prior knowledge and to complement whatever reading and writing programs you're already using in your classrooms.
Irresistible A, B, Cs (Grades PreK-K) OverviewFreshen up your teaching of the alphabet with these easy, fun, and highly effective strategies and activities from outstanding teachers across the country! This friendly resource is packed with innovative ways to introduce letters and build phonemic awareness as well as great games, art projects, instant learning center ideas, perfect poems, hands-on manipulatives, and so much more. A great way to ensure that all children really learn their ABCs. For use with Grade PreK-K.

U.S. History Through Children's Literature: From the Colonial Period to World War II ReviewThis unit study/theme unit approach to history is really neatand well worth the price.. their site summary of the book is reallynot doing this book any justice.. The program uses wonderful readers like light in the forest, courage of sarah noble, sign of the beaver, I sailed with columbus, phoebe the spy, and so forth (59 different books in all).. there are 9 main chapters/units, with each including 6 or more of the 59 books to read that come with an introduction/author section/acitivities/discusision questions/vocabulary lists..each unit has a 1] Bibliography section that includes loads of other extra books to read with a brief description, 2] theme resources section that inlcudes loads of resources like videos/magazines/thematic units/films/computer/etc, and 3] end of unit celebration section that may include recipes for that time period/research projects susgestions/extra activities to do/etc..
there is a lot of stuff in this 228 page book and it covers from the Colonial Period to World War II.. this unit studies book is geared towards grades 4-8 and can easily be used with all grade levels by simply making the questions easier for the little ones and reading the books with them.. this is like using TRISMS or sonlight but easier to use and a lotttttt cheaper...I doubt anyone that loves unit studies or a literature approach to history will feel they wasted their money at all..U.S. History Through Children's Literature: From the Colonial Period to World War II Overview
Allow students to step back in time to experience the thoughts, feelings, dilemmas, and actions of people from history. For each history topic, Miller suggests two titles-one for use with the entire class and one for use with small reading groups. Summaries of the books, author information, activities, and topics for discussion are supplemented with vocabulary lists and ideas for research topics and further reading. This integrated approach makes history meaningful to students and helps them retain historical details and facts.

Awesome Hands-on Activities For Teaching Grammar ReviewThis book was extremely helpful to us in a 6th Grade Language Arts unit. this is filled with GAMES and ACTIVE ways to explore nouns, verbs, sentences - types, fragments, and run-ons.
Using the student's multiple intelligences, you actually make language interesting! You read the lesson idea beforehand, gather materials, and then lead the child or class through an activity.
I found it the perfect program to mix with dry sentence diagramming from elsewhere - to lift up the lesson. Afte such creative fun, my son didn't mind getting in front of a blackboard with me to diagram a few sentences.
Also, instead of just deciding if a verb was a verb, we now decide if it is "vivid" and look at nouns as specific or general - great for strengthening creative writing...and with activities across all learning styles, not lecture. That is hard to find in middle school language arts.
As a homeschooler, I did notice two teacher terms used (perhaps this is what the earlier reviewer was referring to) - mnemonics (rhymes for teaching) and rubric (like a short chart explaining something) - and some of the activities have to be adapted as they were designed for a group - still most activities didn't need any adaptation and I was totally pleased with the way my child responded to these active lessons.Awesome Hands-on Activities For Teaching Grammar Overview

240 Vocabulary Words 3rd Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective ReviewVocabulary is the corner stone of good reading and writing. Many smart kids cannot raise their reading level because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved over a short period. Young kids need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It organizes essential third grade words in 24 lessons, and teaches them with activities and drills. Its well-designed questions help to clarify the related words that kids often misuse otherwise. The word selection is thoughtful and suitable for 3rd grade level. My child used it for learning as well as for assessment. He finished it in 2 months.
For further word practice, I found Beestar weekly ELA program has more such drills (a nice web site at http://www.beestar.org). My child's vocabulary is improved effectively with these word lessons. His reading and writing level is rising at the same time. A solid book!

The Reading Detective Club: Solving the Mysteries of Reading/A Teacher's Guide ReviewDebbie Goodman has created a motivating way for intermediate students to discover reading processes. Debbie, the daughter of Ken and Yetta Goodman, has written several well designed activities to help students do detective work to discover how our brains work when we read. As an intermediate reading specialist, I have used this book with fourth grade struggling readers and their teachers. The lessons teach themselves by allowing students to discover, discuss, and confirm. These activities have helped teachers to learn about cue systems and strategies as well as their students. The Reading Detective Club: Solving the Mysteries of Reading/A Teacher's Guide Overview "Readers are a lot like detectives," says Debra Goodman. "We use clues from the author's text. We use strategies to try to figure out what's going on. We make up theories to solve the mystery of each text, and we check out our theories as we read along." Thus, Goodman invites us to join The Reading Detective Club, a unique new book of "mystery cases" that are actually reading strategy lessons for third through eighth graders and their teachers. Here are two engaging books in one: a smart professional book for teachers and a fun "nonworkbook" for students. The teacher section offers a comprehensive overview of the reading process, with step-by-step instructions for sponsoring a Reading Detective Club, analyses of each case, and discussions of topics such as second-language readers and dialect variations. The student section features a series of reproducible mystery cases presented by student-detectives Jacob, Michele, and Scott. Children are encouraged to solve cases - and come to understand their own approaches to literacy - by exploring the meaning clues, language (grammar) clues, and graphic clues in printed texts.Central to The Reading Detective Club is the importance of miscue analysis as a vital assessment tool. Teachers will appreciate the accessible, practical advice for appropriating miscue analysis in the classroom. Most of all, students will be reassured and inspired to learn that the detective work they do to understand language is proof that they are already smart thinkers and readers.

The Complete Home Learning Source Book: The Essential Resource Guide for Homeschoolers, Parents, and Educators Covering Every Subject from Arithmetic to Zoology ReviewI do professional reviews of a lot of books about homeschooling, and I must say I found this one unusually fun to read, because there's so much packed into it about so many interesting and unusual resources, with something for everyone. It's gratifying to see a reference book so well done.
The Complete Home Source Book is quite literally a huge delight: with 865 pages, this book is 8 1/2" by 11" and almost 2" thick! The subtitle says it well: The Essential Resource Guide for Homeschoolers, Parents, and Educators, Covering Every Subject from Arithmetic to Zoology.
The book is nicely organized into subjects of study, and the subject titles are thoughtfully printed at the page edges in dark blocks to show even with the pages closed. Each entry is tagged with the age group for which the resource is intended. Symbols are used to identify whether the resource is: a book, curriculum, kit, video, software, magazine, audio, game, on-line resource, hands-on activity, or catalog. The price might at first seem expensive, but this is a huge reference resource for long term use, and should save the average person money in the long run, or even perhaps in the short run.
Just a few of the enormous range of subjects thoroughly covered are reading, writing, math, history, foreign language resources, the arts, sciences, journalism, research, mythology, libraries, ethics, religion, economics, philosophy, and life skills. The format consists of well-annotated lists of books, catalogs, games, hands-on materials, on-line resources, CD-ROMSs, tapes, and videos, along with Rebecca Rupp's comments, insightful observations, and delightful, thought-provoking, stories about her family's own experiences. The personal stories should be very helpful to a beginning homeschooler, in that they open a window into what homeschooling looks like in the real setting of one family's daily life. There's no reason, however, why a school-going family couldn't also enjoy and make good use of the book in the same way.
I really think this is one of the best resources to ever grace the home education market.-Lillian JonesThe Complete Home Learning Source Book: The Essential Resource Guide for Homeschoolers, Parents, and Educators Covering Every Subject from Arithmetic to Zoology Overview

The Middle School Writing Toolkit ReviewIf you are a middle school teacher, this book is a must-have! I'm a fairly new teacher and this book has given me enough material to run my writer's workshop for months. There are tons of lessons and assignments here that you can use the day you get the book. The lessons are very straightforward and easy to use. Each writing strand has its own chapter and set of lessons that help you teach any of the major writing genres, including persuasive, literary essay, narratives, how to, and reports.
My school is moving toward differentiated instruction in writing, so this book is a blessing. Each lesson has four writing tasks associated with it, from easy to challenging ones. Not only that, but this book takes you step by step through the process of teaching a differentiated lesson to a heterogeneously grouped class. I think this alone is priceless!
There are tasks, rubrics, charts--everything you'd want in a book about middle school writing.
Highly recommended! The Middle School Writing Toolkit Overview
Designed specifically for all middle-school teachers, The Middle School Writing Toolkit has everything needed to get your writer's workshop up and running whether you're a language arts teacher looking for new writing workshop ideas or a subject-area teacher who wants to improve the quality of student papers.

A Guide for Using The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in the Classroom ReviewI am an elementary teacher, and find this book very useful when we read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as a class. Many of the worksheets that this guide provides are introspective and help the reader focus on the internal motivations of the characters. My class also enjoys trying "Turkish Delight" from the recipe that this guide provides. It helps me answer the professor's question about logic, "What are they teaching in schools?" The Complete Writer: Writing with Ease: ReviewCAVEAT:
Take this preliminary review with a particular grain of salt, for I am an English teacher who unabashedly embraces "The Well-Trained Mind" philosophy behind the Wise-Bauer/Buffington writing team. While this review is a bit premature, I am hopeful that my children will reap benefits similar to those acquired through their related Peace Hill Press grammar and history series.

SWB explains that her motivation for this book was her experience as a professor of literature and history at the prestigious College of William and Mary. Simply put, her well-educated students could not write well. She argues against the theory that one should "Give the children high-interest assignments and have them write, write, write, and revise, revise, revise." This is not how I was taught to write, but it WAS how I was taught to teach, and I, too, endured the blank and panicked students' stares produced by that philosophy.
SWB compares writing to a foreign language. The conventions must be absorbed before the non-native speaker is fluent. Says Wise-Bauer, "Imagine that you have had a year or so of conversational French...After the first year, your teacher asks you to explain the problem of evil in French...(it would be impossible) to express complicated ideas in a medium that is unfamiliar... The conventions...need to become second nature -- invisible -- so that you can concentrate on the ideas rather than the medium." Speech is natural and necessary. Writing is not. Many can, and do, get by without learning to write well.
PRACTICALS:
In Writing With Ease, the elementary years are less about creative output, and more about intake and foundations. The small book is packed with week-by-week exercises (36 for each year) aimed at building one layer at a time. She covers roughly four years in a succinct 216 pages: Years One and Two: Narration, Copywork and Dictation; Years Three and Four: Putting the Steps Together. The copywork samples come primarily from fables, fairy tales, and childhood classics such as "Little House" and "Charlotte's Web". No dull prose allowed.
SWB then thoroughly describes the writing process taught through the middle and high school years, giving this homeschooling mom courage. Says Bauer, "The goal is to turn the young writer into a thoughtful student who can make use of written language, rather than struggle with it." She adds, "Good writing requires training. It demands one-on-one attention." To that I respond with a heart-felt "Amen, sister!"
I've given it four stars after I've previewed the contents, but I hope to add the fifth after the year is over.
NOTE: Some teacher prepraration is required. SWB models the lessons, and then you will cull material from the student's texts and literature books. It's actually very simple to implement and takes very little time. I like to take passages from literature relating to other subjects they are already studying. My kids, second and fourth grade, respectively, love it because we are done in 5-10 minutes. SWB also gives short grammar cues for you to subtly tie in to the lesson.
MY TWO CENTS:
I am ridiculously grateful to have my hands held when it comes to teaching writing to my own kids! I used to teach grammar and composition on the middle and high school level. I left public school dismayed by the students' response to writing in general (never mind the heinous grammatical butchery -- the slaughter wrought through "texting" still haunts me to this day). They hated and feared writing. I never expected prose worthy of Faulkner, but the ability to write simply, clearly, and meaningfully was beyond most -- even the "honor roll" students were woefully inept and overwhelmed by the simplest assignments. I had 145 students x 100 assignments (there were always many who would never in a years' time complete a single writing assignment) X 36 weeks divided by the few hours I had after the 100 daily "administrative" tasks (I actually had to spend the first precious minutes of each day doing a "clothing check" for violations -- Argh!). There was little time to address the fundamentals so obviously lacking, and even less time for meaningingful (and mostly ignored) editorial, instructive feedback. I'm thankful for the experience, for I might never have known the joys of homeschooling. The Complete Writer: Writing with Ease: Overview
In Writing with Ease, Susan Wise Bauer (author of The Well-Trained Mind) lays out an alternativeplan for teaching writing, one that combines the best elements ofold-fashioned writing instruction with innovative new educationalmethods.
Young students who learn to write well need one-on-one instruction—something which your child's classroom may not offer. In The Complete Writer series, Susan Wise Bauer turns every parent into a writing teacher. No experience is needed. Drawing on her fifteen years of experience in teaching writing, Susan lays out a carefully-designed sequence of steps that will teach every student to put words on paper with ease and grace. This alternative plan for teaching writing combines the best elements of old-fashioned writing instruction with innovative new educational methods—and explains why so many writing programs fail.Designed for elementary-aged writers and for older students who still struggle, Writing With Ease builds a sturdy foundation of basic skills for grades 1–4 (or levels 1–4 for the older student who needs more work) all in the same book. Diagnostic tests within the book will help the parent to determine where the child needs to start and which workbook the child will need. You can use the text by itself as a guide, then choose your own copywork and dictation; or you can buy the workbooks (available separately), which do all the work for you. Each workbooks will cover one grade. This Instructor Text covers grades 1-4 in 144 lessons, 4 explanatory chapters, and 4 appendices.

Language Arts, Grade 3 (Spectrum) ReviewEach topic of study has a two-page spread. Today my son is studying statements and commands, sentences that start with a capital letter and end with a period. The first page has a brief overview and some instructions, and then a paragraph which kids must edit for capitalization and periods. On the second page, children decide whether sentences are statements or commands, and then at the bottom of the page they write one statement and one command of their own. Both pages are about a lemonade stand. There is a color graphic of lemonade in the corner.
While these activities do give kids practice with the target skill, they are not at all interesting. Amazon here has an "about the author" saying that the author is Mercer Mayer. He is no longer the author. He had clever, witty paragraphs, poems, stories that kids could work with. Now the topics are somewhat boring for kids.
My son has trouble telling where one section ends and another starts; there is no demarcation between directions and activities.
This workbook will help kids prepare for standardized tests, but it will not give kids a love for language. Come back, Mercer Mayer!Language Arts, Grade 3 (Spectrum) OverviewOur proven Spectrum Language Arts grade 3 workbook features 176 pages of fundamentals in grammar and sentence structure. Language Arts, Grade 2 (Spectrum) ReviewEach topic has a two-page spread. For instance, today my daughter is studying statement sentences that start with a capital letter and end with a period. There are two pages of practice for this; one is rewriting the sentence, and one is editing a paragraph that has no capital letters or periods, with two questions at the bottom of the page which kids can answer with their own written statements. Both pages are about flying kites, and there is a color picture of a kite.
While these exercises are fine and will give kids practice in punctuating statements, they are not interesting at all. In the past, Spectrum workbooks have had witty puns or silly poems or adventure stories that kids could punctuate or find nouns or whatever the assignment might be. What happened to the clever writer that used to make these workbooks? Learning language should not just be about mechanics, but also about appreciating the various uses of language: puns, poetry, narrative... These new workbooks communicate to kids that language is pretty much just boring preparation for standardized tests.Language Arts, Grade 2 (Spectrum) OverviewOur proven Spectrum Language Arts grade 2 workbook features 176 pages of fundamentals in grammar and sentence structure. Books to Build On: A Grade-by-Grade Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers (Core Knowledge Series) ReviewAs an elementary school librarian, there are a handful of review sources I turn to first when a teacher asks me to recommend a book, or when I'm looking to add quality titles to our collection. I just picked up a copy of "Books to Build On," to assist me in selecting some classic titles for our library, as well as to suggest for our school district core literature list.
I can tell you that I'm impressed with the selections recommended in "Books to Build On," based on the titles I'm already familiar with. And based on Hirsch's reputation in the field of cultural literacy, I can place a great deal of confidence in the titles that I'm currently unfamiliar with.
This will sit on my personal shelf for quick reference, right beside my other favorites: "The Read-Aloud Handbook," by Jim Trelease, "The New York Times Parent's Guide to the Best Books for Children," "Eyeopeners II," by Beverly Kobrin (a great guide for nonfiction books) and "Books That Build Character," by William Kilpatrick and Gregory and Suzanne M. Wolfe.Books to Build On: A Grade-by-Grade Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers (Core Knowledge Series) OverviewA companion volume to the highly successful series of textbooks for grades one through six lists books and other print resources--organized by topic--related to the material covered in the textbooks, designed to encourage further study.

Reading Comprehension Grade 4 ReviewOverall, this is a good workbook for reading comprehension with interesting reading materials. However, I think it is too easy for the 4th graders and may be more appropiate for lower graders.
I have found an error in this book: On page 41, question 1, I believe that the correct answer should be "c". There can be a printing error of the answer key on page 48, which states that the answer for the above question is "d".Reading Comprehension Grade 4 Overview
