Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy ReviewAgain, Fountas and Pinnell have helped teachers with their incredible insight on educating children. This time their help/advice/knowledge focuses on grades 3-6 but do not let that stop you if you teach another grade level. Their information on the essential components of a quality literacy program is true for any grade level. Fountas and Pinnell offer suggestions for effectively helping readers and writers who are not meeting "standard". These suggestions are specific and establish teaching practices that will help all readers and writers. They also give many mini lesson ideas and great literature connections that make a teacher's job easier. The appendices include forms for language/word study for both reading and writing and for literary assessment. Once again, their book ends with a valuable book list that is leveled. This book is an essential resource for all teachers.Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy OverviewAuthors Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell have already helped hundreds of thousands of K-3 teachers engage, inform, and inspire early readers and writers. Now, with Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6), Fountas and Pinnell support teachers on the next leg of the literacy journey, addressing the unique challenges of teaching upper elementary students.
The product of many years of work with classroom teachers, Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6) is one of the most comprehensive, authoritative guides available today. It explores all the essential components of a quality literacy program in six separate sections:
Breakthrough to Literacy: Fountas and Pinnell present the basic structure of the language/literacy program within a breakthrough framework that encompasses the building of community through language, word study, reading, writing, and the visual arts. The framework plays out as three "blocks," which can be interpreted as conceptual units as well as segments of time within the school day. Specific information on how to structure a reading and writing workshop is provided. A practical chapter on organizing and managing the classroom will help you implement the principles in your own classroom.
Independent Reading: It is essential for students to develop interests and tastes as readers, selecting books for themselves every day. Fountas and Pinnell devote four chapters to independent reading, exploring how to structure teaching, minilessons, conferences, groupshare, and ways to use response journals as part of a reading workshop.
Guided Reading: The chapters in this section provide detailed information on planning for guided reading, dynamic grouping for effective teaching, and selecting, introducing, and using leveled texts. Fountas and Pinnell describe characteristics of texts related to difficulty and ways to organize texts in your classroom and school.
Literature Study: This section of the book discusses how to make students' experiences with literature as rich as possible. The authors offer specific suggestions for forming groups, guiding student choices, and establishing and teaching routines for literature discussion. A full chapter explores reader response and ways to help readers dig deep to uncover the meaning of texts.
Teaching for Comprehension and Word Analysis: This detailed look at the reading process explores both oral and silent reading, processes and behaviors related to comprehension, and ways to help students construct meaning. Included are twelve systems for sustaining the reading process and expanding meaning, plus discussions of the important areas of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.
The Reading and Writing Connection: These chapters showcase the instructional contexts - poetry, writer's notebooks, writer's talks, genre, content literacy, and student research - that support students in connected reading and writing. An informative overview of the characteristics of fiction and nonfiction will help you teach students to read and write a variety of genre. What's more, the authors suggest ways to help students learn the "genre" of testing and perform the kinds of reading and writing tasks that tests require. They also detail the continuous thoughtful assessment that guides all aspects of effective teaching.
A special feature appears at the end of each section, in which Fountas and Pinnell provide indispensable suggestions for working with struggling readers and writers.

Apprenticeship in Literacy ReviewIf you liked Guided Reading by Fountas and Pinnell, you'll REALLY enjoy this book. It includes not only easy to understand philosophy, but exacting implementation suggestions (pictures, too) along with excellent teacher language you'll want to use in conjunction with the explicit guided reading and writing suggestions for every level: emergent, early and fluent. I'm a Reading Recovery teacher who also works with literacy groups and think this is the best classroom balanced literacy book I've seen to date.Apprenticeship in Literacy Overview
This easy-to-read text will guide K-3 teachers as they develop a reading and writing program for all their students. An apprenticeship approach to literacy emphasizes the role of the teacher in providing demonstrations, engaging children, monitoring their understanding, providing timely support and, ultimately, withdrawing that support as the child gains independence.
Drawing on authentic classroom examples—student writing samples, class schedules, photographs, and rich transcriptions of teaching and learning interactions—the authors illustrate instruction that is aimed at children's learning zones. As children become more competent readers and writers, the instructional interactions are adjusted to accommodate their higher-level learning.

Here is a wealth of in-depth information, specific strategies, and organizational formats in literacy areas such as:principles of apprenticeship literacy;learning to read from a cognitive apprenticeship approach, including the roles of read-aloud, familiar reading, and shared reading;
guided reading, including flexible grouping, reading and writing links, and instructional interactions that emphasize problem-solving strategies;helping children develop writing strategies through interactive writing, writing aloud, and revising and editing transactions;transitions in children's independent writing, including their relationship to modeling and coaching demonstrations during assisted writing;helping children acquire phonological knowledge, including activities that guide children in manipulating letters, sounds, and spelling patterns;a typical day of putting it all together in two apprenticeship settings: a first-grade classroom and a Title I reading program;using school-based professional literacy teams to support teachers in developing an effective literacy program for their children.
No detail is lost. The authors also cover such practical matters as establishing routines and organizing the classroom environment, including rotation schedules for meeting with small groups of children, lists of materials for establishing literacy corners, and literacy corner activities designed to provide the children with opportunities for independent practice.

With Apprenticeship in Literacy you can achieve a balanced literacy program that works for all your students.

Word Crafting: Teaching Spelling, Grades K-6 ReviewThis is a great little book about spelling instruction. Good ideas, but would have liked more!Word Crafting: Teaching Spelling, Grades K-6 Overview
At long last, a spelling and vocabulary book written by a classroom teacher who's a literacy specialist, too!
Cindy Marten responds to the demand for "direct, systematic, and explicit phonics and spelling instruction" that goes way beyond what to teach - she addresses the questions of how, when, and why spelling should be taught. More important, she situates spelling within the contexts of real writing and the individual learner's needs.

In Word Crafting, Marten offers an approach that is at once playful, intellectual, and artful, engaging students in inquiry and wonder about words. "Word crafting" is analogous to the ways fine woodworkers develop their skills - through collecting the right tools, item by item, until they have a toolbelt full of them. The same is true for teaching spelling and here Marten supplies the tools, each one carefully selected for her students. Dip into her book for tools to:

assess and group students for effective instruction
engage them from the start in smart word study
help students learn high-frequency words, rules, patterns, and spelling demons
align your teaching with school, district, state, and national mandates.

Use these tools to set up word-crafting contexts that connect the study of words to authentic reading and writing. Craft a word study program that turns your students into more than good spellers - they'll be fine word crafters.

The Reading Detective Club: Solving the Mysteries of Reading/A Teacher's Guide ReviewDebbie Goodman has created a motivating way for intermediate students to discover reading processes. Debbie, the daughter of Ken and Yetta Goodman, has written several well designed activities to help students do detective work to discover how our brains work when we read. As an intermediate reading specialist, I have used this book with fourth grade struggling readers and their teachers. The lessons teach themselves by allowing students to discover, discuss, and confirm. These activities have helped teachers to learn about cue systems and strategies as well as their students. The Reading Detective Club: Solving the Mysteries of Reading/A Teacher's Guide Overview "Readers are a lot like detectives," says Debra Goodman. "We use clues from the author's text. We use strategies to try to figure out what's going on. We make up theories to solve the mystery of each text, and we check out our theories as we read along." Thus, Goodman invites us to join The Reading Detective Club, a unique new book of "mystery cases" that are actually reading strategy lessons for third through eighth graders and their teachers. Here are two engaging books in one: a smart professional book for teachers and a fun "nonworkbook" for students. The teacher section offers a comprehensive overview of the reading process, with step-by-step instructions for sponsoring a Reading Detective Club, analyses of each case, and discussions of topics such as second-language readers and dialect variations. The student section features a series of reproducible mystery cases presented by student-detectives Jacob, Michele, and Scott. Children are encouraged to solve cases - and come to understand their own approaches to literacy - by exploring the meaning clues, language (grammar) clues, and graphic clues in printed texts.Central to The Reading Detective Club is the importance of miscue analysis as a vital assessment tool. Teachers will appreciate the accessible, practical advice for appropriating miscue analysis in the classroom. Most of all, students will be reassured and inspired to learn that the detective work they do to understand language is proof that they are already smart thinkers and readers.

The Daily Five ReviewI purchased this book and read it within a few hours. This book is cleary written, conscise, not full of jargon, and truly written for the classroom teacher to implement effectively. I teach 1st grade and can easily transition my students into this routine. The authors offer practical advice regarding teaching of behaviors, management, assessment, and references for further reading and research. What a refreshing change from dense, heady teacher-reading! An ASSET to any professional library (literacy teacher or elementary teacher)! The Daily Five Overview
Do you love teaching but feel exhausted from the energy you expend cajoling, disciplining, and directing students on a daily basis? If so, you'll want to meet "The Sisters", Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.Based on literacy learning and motivation research, they created a structure called The Daily Five which has been practiced and refined in their own classrooms for ten years, and shared with thousands of teachers throughout the United States. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.

This book not only explains the philosophy behind the structure, but shows you how to carefully and systematically train your students to participate in each of the five components.

Explicit modeling practice, reflecting and refining take place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content instruction tailored to meet the needs of each child.

The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary ReviewI got this book during summer vacation in an attempt to make vocabulary instruction more interesting. I copied the first two pages for my 5th graders, we sang the original song, and then I had them tell me which words fit in which blanks. Then, we sang it again. In under 15 minutes, the kids new 7 new Tier 2 words! On top of that, we were all laughing our heads off about "Be compassionate to your web-footed comrades."
Each songs has several synonyms that would fit into the blanks. I whited out all but one synonym for each blanked out word. This made our instruction quicker and more focused. It also didn't overwhelm them with too many synonyms to remember. After this, I put the new words on note cards on a bulletin board and when the kids find these words in their daily reading, they can show me the word and then go up and put a tally on the note card.
Lots of fun, sticks in your head. It's a fool-proof way to learn words, and it's way more exciting than vocabulary books.Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary OverviewIntroduce students to new words and their meanings using favorite childhood songs and rhymes. First, students sing or recite a familiar song or rhyme and discuss what it means. Then, they replace some of its words with synonyms. Students can learn 10 to 20 new vocabulary words per song or rhyme. A fun yet meaningful way to build vocabulary! For use with Grades 3–6.

Improving Reading: Strategies And Resources (Fourth Edition) ReviewThis book should be in every teacher's collection. I teach English as a Second Language and I use this book often. It gives great ideas for strategies to use with struggling readers. I purchased this book in grad school for my reading specialist certification and now, I find it to be one of the resources that I refer to most. We all have students in our classes that struggle with reading for one reason or another; and generally they have problems with different aspects of the reading process. This book starts with the basics of letter identification, continues through fluency and comprenhension, and even gives strategies for getting students to enjoy reading. Look at the table of contents for this book -- you will see for yourself! I recommend this resource for ALL K-12 teachers. In addition to the hundreds -- yes hundreds-- of activities, there are also numerous lists and resources listed in the back of the book. I feel that if you purchase this book -- YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!Improving Reading: Strategies And Resources (Fourth Edition) Overview
