Daily Word Ladders: Grades 4-6 ReviewI got to listen to the author, Timothy Rasinki, do a presentation for our district and he had wonderful suggestions and ideas. I bought this book for my students to use as filler activities and they are fun. Of course you have to work on a few together until they get the hang of what it is they must do. Some of the words may be difficult to get for some, it may not be something that many will be able to finish on their own, so I had mine work in pairs.
He also suggested using the book "Instant Vocabulary" which I also bought and loved it. It helped me increase their vocabulary (and mine) by listing root words and their meanings. It gives great ideas for strategies to use with struggling readers. I purchased this book in grad school for my reading specialist certification and now, I find it to be one of the resources that I refer to most. We all have students in our classes that struggle with reading for one reason or another; and generally they have problems with different aspects of the reading process. This book starts with the basics of letter identification, continues through fluency and comprenhension, and even gives strategies for getting students to enjoy reading. Look at the table of contents for this book -- you will see for yourself! I recommend this resource for ALL K-12 teachers. In addition to the hundreds -- yes hundreds-- of activities, there are also numerous lists and resources listed in the back of the book.
