It's chock full of tips for getting reluctant readers reading, making reading fun and enjoyable, and even helping good readers excel.

It has been useful for tackling reading challenges with my own kids--an eye-opening and extremely helpful book.

Multiliteracies in Motion: Current Theory and Practice ReviewReview by Lesley Ljungdahl (UTS):Multiliteracies in Motion: Current theory and practice makes an excellent contribution to understanding the nature of literacy in the 21st century. Trainee and practising teachers will find inspiration to transform and/or enrich their teaching so that it meets the needs of their students who have grown up in a world of digital technology. Well known researchers (Allan Luke, Peter Freebody, Len Unsworth, Cope & Kalantzis, Bull & Anstey) offer stimulating ideas to utilise technology in classrooms and to explore the field of multiliteracies. The move from the study of the printed text to the inclusion of multimedia/visual literacy has already transformed teaching, even if assessment practices still lag behind. The four parts of the books highlight underlying socio-cultural factors and promote interdisciplinarity. These relate to classrooms, literary theory, pedagogy and multiliteracies in practice.Opening up our minds to change is achieved by this book which introduces us to the challenge of emerging media and diverse ways of teaching literacy. Readers will discover new insights, prompted by the research and thinking of this diverse collection of scholarship from many countries.Multiliteracies in Motion: Current Theory and Practice OverviewThe realities of new technological and social conditions since the 1990s demand a new approach to literacy teaching. Looking onward from the original statement of aims of the multiliteracies movement in 1996, this volume brings together top-quality scholarship and research that has embraced the notion and features new contributions by many of the originators of this approach to literacy. Drawing on large research projects and empirical evidence, the authors explore practical and educational issues that relate to multiliteracies, such as assessment, pedagogy and curriculum. The viewpoint taken is that multiliteracies is a complementary socio-cultural approach to the new literacies that includes pedagogy and learning. The differences are addressed from a multiliteracies perspective - one that does not discount or undermine the new literacies, but shows new ways in which they are complementary. Computers and the internet are transforming the way we work and communicate and the very notion of literacy itself. This volume offers frontline information and a vital update for those wishing to understand the evolution of multiliteracies and the current state of literacy theory in relation to it.

Daily Word Ladders: Grades 4-6 ReviewI got to listen to the author, Timothy Rasinki, do a presentation for our district and he had wonderful suggestions and ideas. I bought this book for my students to use as filler activities and they are fun. Of course you have to work on a few together until they get the hang of what it is they must do. Some of the words may be difficult to get for some, it may not be something that many will be able to finish on their own, so I had mine work in pairs.
He also suggested using the book "Instant Vocabulary" which I also bought and loved it. It helped me increase their vocabulary (and mine) by listing root words and their meanings. Great for 5 minute fillers to introduce a root word or two.Daily Word Ladders: Grades 4-6 OverviewKids climb to new heights in reading and writing with these engaging, reproducible word building games! Kids read clues on each rung, then change and rearrange letters to create words until they reach the top. All the while, they're boosting decoding and spelling skills, broadening vocabulary, and becoming better, more fluent readers.

Functional English Grammar: An Introduction for Second Language Teachers (Cambridge Language Education) ReviewStraight up, I really like this book. I have seen a few functional grammar books, or books that have "leaned" in that direction, and they have either been very close to Murphy-esque stuff or have been very complex, like Halliday's formidable tome. Lock seems to have found a balance of function and understandable content.
The book is logically organised and represents good chunks of information arranged according to various functions. Noun groups, ("representing things"), various verbs, complex sentences, speech acts and a whole tonne more are there. Each chapter has a decent amount of detail, lots of examples illustrating the point and giving everything a good overall coverage. The bottom line is that there is virtually no strain on the reader in getting their head around it all. Lock is very succinct and wastes no paper or words.
All in all, Graham Lock's "Functional Grammar" is a great resource for teachers, and one that should be counted on the bookselves of anyone wanting a good functional explanation of grammatical aspects of English. As mentioned, I REALLY like this book and found it very useful.
Functional English Grammar: An Introduction for Second Language Teachers (Cambridge Language Education) OverviewThis text explores ways in which English grammar enables speakers and writers to represent the world, to interact with one another, and to create coherent messages. This book provides second language teachers with a functional description of English grammar, in which grammar is viewed as a communicative resource. Each chapter includes a focus on areas of difficulty for second language learners, numerous authentic examples, tasks that allow the reader to apply the concepts introduced, and discussion questions. A final chapter covers issues in the learning and teaching of grammar, and reviews methodological options for the second or foreign language classroom. Assuming no previous study of linguistics or English grammar, this book is suitable for self-study or as a textbook in teacher education programs.

Dictation: New Methods, New Possibilities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI teach a intermediate/advanced reading and writing class in an adult English as a Second Language program in Arlington, Virginia, and this book is by far my favorite resource. My students are always asking for dictations, and this book provides stimulating twists on the standard dictation. Each activity is rated as to the difficulty and adaptability level, and most activities are adaptable to different levels. The book provides activities for groups and pair work, which is so important in the adult ESL classroom. The activities really get the students excited, and many get them up and moving around. A favorite is an activity called "Messenger and Scribe" in which one student reads from a prepared text taped to the wall in the hallway, remembers what he or she has read, and returns to the classroom to dictate to the "Scribe" in the pair what the text says. This provides excellent opportunities for self-correction, and different prepared texts can be used for different level students in a multi-level classroom.I highly recommend this book to any teacher who is looking for a new way to present an old favorite. If reading and writing is even a small part of the class that you teach, this book should be on your shelf.Dictation: New Methods, New Possibilities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewDictation contains a wealth of new techniques to extend the traditional language-learning activity of dictation. The authors present some thought-provoking answers to such apparently simple questions as: Who chooses the text? Who dictates? Who corrects? What and how do they correct? The activities range from traditional focuses on spelling and punctuation problems to exercise that emphasize personal attitudes and opinions of both teachers and students. Dictation provides: activities suitable for a wide range of levels and ages; example texts for many activities, with permission to copy; opportunities for students to create their own texts; a variety of suggested correction techniques; suggestions for using dictation in teacher training.

The Complete Writer: Writing with Ease: ReviewCAVEAT:
Take this preliminary review with a particular grain of salt, for I am an English teacher who unabashedly embraces "The Well-Trained Mind" philosophy behind the Wise-Bauer/Buffington writing team. While this review is a bit premature, I am hopeful that my children will reap benefits similar to those acquired through their related Peace Hill Press grammar and history series.
THEORY:
SWB explains that her motivation for this book was her experience as a professor of literature and history at the prestigious College of William and Mary. Simply put, her well-educated students could not write well. She argues against the theory that one should "Give the children high-interest assignments and have them write, write, write, and revise, revise, revise." This is not how I was taught to write, but it WAS how I was taught to teach, and I, too, endured the blank and panicked students' stares produced by that philosophy.
SWB compares writing to a foreign language. The conventions must be absorbed before the non-native speaker is fluent. Says Wise-Bauer, "Imagine that you have had a year or so of conversational French...After the first year, your teacher asks you to explain the problem of evil in French...(it would be impossible) to express complicated ideas in a medium that is unfamiliar... The conventions...need to become second nature -- invisible -- so that you can concentrate on the ideas rather than the medium." Speech is natural and necessary. Writing is not. Many can, and do, get by without learning to write well.
PRACTICALS:
In Writing With Ease, the elementary years are less about creative output, and more about intake and foundations. The small book is packed with week-by-week exercises (36 for each year) aimed at building one layer at a time. She covers roughly four years in a succinct 216 pages: Years One and Two: Narration, Copywork and Dictation; Years Three and Four: Putting the Steps Together. The copywork samples come primarily from fables, fairy tales, and childhood classics such as "Little House" and "Charlotte's Web". No dull prose allowed.
SWB then thoroughly describes the writing process taught through the middle and high school years, giving this homeschooling mom courage. Says Bauer, "The goal is to turn the young writer into a thoughtful student who can make use of written language, rather than struggle with it." She adds, "Good writing requires training. It demands one-on-one attention." To that I respond with a heart-felt "Amen, sister!"
I've given it four stars after I've previewed the contents, but I hope to add the fifth after the year is over.
NOTE: Some teacher prepraration is required. SWB models the lessons, and then you will cull material from the student's texts and literature books. It's actually very simple to implement and takes very little time. I like to take passages from literature relating to other subjects they are already studying. My kids, second and fourth grade, respectively, love it because we are done in 5-10 minutes. SWB also gives short grammar cues for you to subtly tie in to the lesson.
MY TWO CENTS:
I am ridiculously grateful to have my hands held when it comes to teaching writing to my own kids! I used to teach grammar and composition on the middle and high school level. I left public school dismayed by the students' response to writing in general (never mind the heinous grammatical butchery -- the slaughter wrought through "texting" still haunts me to this day). They hated and feared writing. I never expected prose worthy of Faulkner, but the ability to write simply, clearly, and meaningfully was beyond most -- even the "honor roll" students were woefully inept and overwhelmed by the simplest assignments. I had 145 students x 100 assignments (there were always many who would never in a years' time complete a single writing assignment) X 36 weeks divided by the few hours I had after the 100 daily "administrative" tasks (I actually had to spend the first precious minutes of each day doing a "clothing check" for violations -- Argh!). There was little time to address the fundamentals so obviously lacking, and even less time for meaningingful (and mostly ignored) editorial, instructive feedback. I'm thankful for the experience, for I might never have known the joys of homeschooling. The Complete Writer: Writing with Ease: Overview
In Writing with Ease, Susan Wise Bauer (author of The Well-Trained Mind) lays out an alternativeplan for teaching writing, one that combines the best elements ofold-fashioned writing instruction with innovative new educationalmethods.
Young students who learn to write well need one-on-one instruction—something which your child's classroom may not offer. In The Complete Writer series, Susan Wise Bauer turns every parent into a writing teacher. No experience is needed. Drawing on her fifteen years of experience in teaching writing, Susan lays out a carefully-designed sequence of steps that will teach every student to put words on paper with ease and grace. This alternative plan for teaching writing combines the best elements of old-fashioned writing instruction with innovative new educational methods—and explains why so many writing programs fail.Designed for elementary-aged writers and for older students who still struggle, Writing With Ease builds a sturdy foundation of basic skills for grades 1–4 (or levels 1–4 for the older student who needs more work) all in the same book. Diagnostic tests within the book will help the parent to determine where the child needs to start and which workbook the child will need. You can use the text by itself as a guide, then choose your own copywork and dictation; or you can buy the workbooks (available separately), which do all the work for you. Each workbooks will cover one grade. This Instructor Text covers grades 1-4 in 144 lessons, 4 explanatory chapters, and 4 appendices.

Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide ReviewThis is a book on language teaching for language teachers. The book takes the view that language teachers must be responsible for making the ideas in the book real for their own particular contexts. The book starts with self-development as a theme and then moves on to teaching skills. Jerry Gebhard is careful to point out that he is not providing a bag of tricks as each application is backed-up with a sound theoretical perspective. The references in each section are excellent if the busy teacher has some time to read in more depth. Also, each chapter has activities that teachers can explore in order to apply the chapter information to their own particular context. What I especially like is that these activities encourage teachers to talk to other teachers and colleagues. This is where real self-development starts. This book, then, is a welcome user friendly addition to the field of English Language Teaching. If the user is a teacher, you have found the right book!Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide OverviewIn our times, international travel and extended living arrangements abroad have become almost a normal occurrence in the lives of many people, particularly the young and college educated. Many of these people, often with little training, find themselves with the opportunity to teach the English language to foreign students. After a short stint teaching EFL students in a foreign culture, once-confident English -language teachers often realize that some teacher training would have been useful. This readable and creative new book by Jerry Gebhard is a textbook for the untrained ESL/EFL teacher. It is designed for use by self-motivated teachers who seek to maximize their potential as teachers and, in so doing, enhance the learning of their students. This guide stresses the multifaceted nature of teaching the English language to nonnative speakers and is based on the real experiences of teachers. It provides basic information that ESL teachers should know before they start teaching, as well as ideas on how language instructors can guide students in the skills of listening, conversation, reading, and writing.Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language is unique in that it emphasizes self-development as central to being an ESL/EFL teacher. A variety of self-development tasks are included. Each chapter is guided by a set of questions directly relevant to teaching, including advice on teaching problems. An appendix provides addresses, phone numbers and information on professional second/foreign language-teaching organizations, as well as a list of professional journals and publishing houses. The author's practical and self-motivating philosophy is inviting to a wide audience: EFL teachers, teachers of teachers, and those who have found themselves in a position for which their training is incomplete. It is an excellent work for everyday use and will serve as a fine reference tool.

Your Own Words: The Bestselling Author of Word Court Explains How to Decipher Decipher the Dictionary, Master the Usage Manual, and Be Your Own Language Expert ReviewFor a serious writer or editor, this is an essential book. I keep it close by my dictionary, thesaurus, Chicago Manual, Garner, and Fowler's (the 2nd edition, of course, not the awful 3rd). Your Own Words is, as another reviewer aptly noted, a meta-reference, the one that allows me to find my way around the others and answer grammar and usage questions for myself. (I never, for instance, would have thought of using Google News as a usage guide.) The many selections from Wallraff's Atlantic Monthly column are a welcome bonus.Your Own Words: The Bestselling Author of Word Court Explains How to Decipher Decipher the Dictionary, Master the Usage Manual, and Be Your Own Language Expert Overview

The ELT Grammar Book: A Teacher-Friendly Reference Guide (Alta Teacher Resource Series) ReviewThe ELT Grammar Book is a reference guide for
teachers of English to speakers of other languages.
Readers may recognize the author's name as the
columnist of "Grammatically Speaking" in TESOL
Matters and "The Grammar Guy" in ESL Magazine.
Richard Firsten has taken his grammatical expertise
and produced a reference tool that focuses on topics
both difficult to understand and explain. The style is
casual and relaxed, which is a pleasant deviation
from typical pedantic grammar reference materials.
Though extensive and in-depth (22 chapters
and 8 appendices totaling over 550 pages), the text is
not intended to be exhaustive. Topics were restricted
to include only high frequency areas typically most
troublesome to teachers and L2 learners alike.
Eighteen of the chapters focus on grammar-exclusive
themes that include such topics as adjectives, articles,
modal auxiliaries, passives, prepositions,
subjunctives, verb tenses, and word order. Three
chapters are primarily discourse related.
Autosegmentals are analyzed in chapters 15 and 18;
the former chapter covers word and phrase stress
while the latter focuses on sentence-level intonation.
Chapter 21 is entitled "ELT 'Waifs'" and deals with
relaxed pronunciation, intensifiers, and common
phrases seldom included in instructional texts.
Phrases that add so much to the flow of conversational
English such as "a great deal of" or the frequent use
of the suffix "-ish" (childish, pinkish, late-ish, around
eight-ish) can assist the L2 student in understanding
common discourse. In the final chapter, the author
notes the changing nature of the English language
and predicts upcoming transformations that are likely
to occur.
Each of the 21 instructional chapters
concludes with "Teaching Tips," which supply
instructors with resources that allow students to
flesh out the content material through numerous
activities designed for pairwork and/or small groups.
These activities alone make the text a valuable
resource. Scattered throughout many of the chapters
is an aside called "Troubleshooter." This
informational box interrupts instructional sections
with pertinent explanations in anticipation of
students' questions. Another strength of the text is
the salient feature of the inductive method of
instruction. For example, situations are often
presented in the form of dialogs so that readers can
observe the grammar point contextually. By
highlighting selected portions of the dialog and
through provocative questioning, the writer models
a lesson requiring the reader to elicit a rule or to
figure out why a certain construction is used.
Employing this critical thinking strategy leads to
discovery, and ideally, to student ownership of that
specific grammar point. At a minimum, adding this
method to one's teaching repertoire will supply
diversity to classroom instruction.
Finally, the eight appendices cover a range
of subject matter that includes strategies, games,
pronunciation, spelling, and further elaboration on
previously covered material. For instance, the author
has provided an excellent outline in the second
appendix that uses the mechanical, meaningful/
manipulative, and communication approach in
relaying content material. Examples abound using
cloze procedures, slot substitutions, and incomplete
dialogs.
Many ESL professionals rely upon college
composition reference manuals for consultation.
Often these tools provide ESL-specific material only
in the form of an appendix or sub-section. The
detailed instruction found in The ELT Grammar Book,
however, is designed exclusively with the L2 learner
in mind. Its primary limitation is found in the
authors' intentionally selective subject matter which
may leave instructors searching elsewhere for
particular topics not addressed. Regardless, whether
an instructor's method of infusing grammar is
comprised primarily of explicit discrete-point
instruction or incidentally through a more
communicative approach, the information, activities,
and strategies offered in this text will provide a
handy reference tool for teachers of L2 students in
various levels and contexts.

Daytona Beach CommunityThe ELT Grammar Book: A Teacher-Friendly Reference Guide (Alta Teacher Resource Series) OverviewAt long last English language teachers have what they've been waiting for—a "professional friend" to give a helping hand at all times! A great deal more than a grammar book, this new resource explores areas of the language that teachers have found troublesome to understand, hard to explain, and challenging to demonstrate to students. Its down-to-earth, reader-friendly format gives a fresh, new way of looking at complex material, in turn preparing teachers to communicate better and give more effective examples to students. The 22 chapters explore word order, articles, present, past, and future tenses, the overlooked uses of some and any, modal auxiliaries, prepositions, genitives, compound nouns and adjectives, passives and causatives, direct object companions, two-and three-word verbs, subjunctives, conditional sentences, the role of stress and intonation to convey meaning, and more! You'll find valuable information that you've never seen in other grammar reference books! Each chapter:• encourages readers to observe, think about, and make conclusions about grammar points;• features special Troubleshooter boxes with helpful insights on points that often bring problems to the teaching and learning of English because of language interference or other causes; and• concludes with a section of Teaching Tips to help you create an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment in your classroom with a generous amount of activities and games to teach or reinforce the discrete points covered in the chapter. When your mind goes blank and you're trying to remember exactly what native speakers of English say or why they say this or why they don't say that . . . The ELT Grammar Book comes to the rescue! It's a professional friend that you'll consult often over the entire course of your career.

The Grammar Activity Book: A Resource Book of Grammar Games for Young Students (Cambridge Copy Collection) ReviewThis is really an enjoyable book with a lot of games to review language structures. It contains different versions of well-known games that are adapted to practice grammar, such as bingo, backgammon, rummy, checkers, and other original board and card games that students really enjoy. It contains practice for different levels of students. You can find from the basic tenses like present simple, past simple, frequency adverbs, etc to the most complex structures like reported speech, passive voice, etc. Though not suitable for true beginner students, this book can't be missed if you teach pre-intermediate to advanced students. Although it says it is intended for young students, games are suitable for all ages (except young children).

Reading Comprehension Grade 4 ReviewOverall, this is a good workbook for reading comprehension with interesting reading materials. However, I think it is too easy for the 4th graders and may be more appropiate for lower graders.
I have found an error in this book: On page 41, question 1, I believe that the correct answer should be "c". There can be a printing error of the answer key on page 48, which states that the answer for the above question is "d".Reading Comprehension Grade 4 Overview

What English Language Teachers Need to Know Volume I: Understanding Learning (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series) ReviewThis book is quite useful for a teacher new to the ESL/EFL field who might feel underprepared pedagogically. It is also a good review for a new teacher to see if he/she has adequate foundational knowledge. The book mainly has strengths with very few weaknesses.
I have not seen Vol. II yet, but I think it would be worth it because it deals with the application of the concepts in Vol. I. Together they would cover a lot of breadth on the subject with a reasonable amount of depth. What English Language Teachers Need to Know Volume I: Understanding Learning (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series) OverviewDesigned for pre-service teachers and teachers new to the field of ELT,Volume Iand its companion textbook, Volume II,are organized around the key question: What do teachers need to know and be able to do in order for their students to learn English? All English language teachers need to understand the nature of language and language learning, and with that understanding they need to be able to facilitate student learning.Volume I, on understanding learning, provides the background information that teachers need to know and be able to use in their classroom:the characteristics of the context in which they workhow English works and how it is learned their role in the larger professional sphere of English language education Volume II, on facilitating learning, covers the three main facets of teaching: planninginstructingassessing. The focus throughout is on outcomes, that is, student learning. The texts work for teachers across different contexts (countries where English is the dominant language, one of the official languages, or taught as a foreign language); different levels (elementary/primary, secondary, college or university, or adult education), and different learning purposes (general English, workplace English, English for academic purposes, or English for specific purposes).

Easy & Engaging ESL Activities and Mini-Books for Every Classroom: Terrific Teaching Tips, Games, Mini-Books & More to Help New Students from Every Nation Build Basic English Vocabulary and Feel Welcome ReviewAs a teacher of young learners, I struggle to find resources that truly meet the needs of my students, most of whom are just beginning to read and write in English. This book, however, has proven to be a goldmine. Kids and parents alike love the make-and-take books, while I love the flexibility of each unit. I've used the simple drawings to make charts, flashcards, games, etc. to accompany thematic units and have even used a few of the worksheets to review basic concepts with older kids. I'm giving the book a four instead of a five because the unit topics are quite basic. Once students know colors, numbers, letters, shapes, body parts, basic food items, and basic school terminology, this book basically goes back on the shelf until you get your next room full of beginners. But if you teach young learners with limited language skills, this book is a must have.Easy & Engaging ESL Activities and Mini-Books for Every Classroom: Terrific Teaching Tips, Games, Mini-Books & More to Help New Students from Every Nation Build Basic English Vocabulary and Feel Welcome OverviewNot sure how to teach a student who speaks only a little English or none at all? This quick and easy guide can help with tips for preparing for your new student, assessing the child's needs and abilities, communicating with the student's family, and much more. For use with Grades 1-4.
