Contested Policy: The Rise and Fall of Federal Bilingual Education in the United States, 1960-2001 (Al Filo: Mexican American Studies Series) ReviewHistory professor Guadalupe San Miguel Jr. presents Contested Policy: The Rise And Fall Of Federal Bilingual Education In The United States 1960-2001, a straightforward evaluation of federal bilingual education policy from 1960 to 2001, especially focusing upon the years after 1978 when bilingual policy became the subject of heated debate. Examining the opposing points of view, particularly in a pro-assimilations versus anti-assimilation camps, Contested Policy traces the history of bilingual education legislation, up to the modern day with the passage of English-only legislative rules. An extensively annotated bibliography rounds out this excellent and evenhanded historical reference.Contested Policy: The Rise and Fall of Federal Bilingual Education in the United States, 1960-2001 (Al Filo: Mexican American Studies Series) OverviewBilingual education is one of the most contentious and misunderstood educational programs in the country. It raises significant questions about this country's national identity, the nature of federalism, power, ethnicity, and pedagogy. In Contested Policy, Guadalupe San Miguel, Jr., studies the origins, evolution, and consequences of federal bilingual education policy from 1960 to 2001, with particular attention to the activist years after 1978, when bilingual policy was heatedly contested. Traditionally, those in favor of bilingual education are language specialists, Mexican American activists, newly enfranchised civil rights advocates, language minorities, intellectuals, teachers, and students. They are ideologically opposed to the assimilationist philosophy in the schools, to the structural exclusion and institutional discrimination of minority groups, and to limited school reform. On the other hand, the opponents of bilingual education, comprised at different points in time of conservative journalists, politicians, federal bureaucrats, Anglo parent groups, school officials, administrators, and special-interest groups (such as U.S. English), favor assimilationism, the structural exclusion and discrimination of ethnic minorities, and limited school reform. In the 1990s a resurgence of opposition to bilingual education succeeded in repealing bilingual legislation with an English-only piece of legislation. San Miguel deftly provides a history of these clashing groups and how they impacted bilingual educational policy over the years. Rounding out this history is an extensive, annotated bibliography on federal bilingual policy that can be used to enhance further study.

The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Handbook: A Complete K-12 Reference Guide ReviewI almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Handbook: A Complete K-12 Reference Guide OverviewThe third edition of this popular handbook brings together theories, ideas, and resources for promoting crosscultural awareness, language development, and academic progress for English learners. It ties together culture and language in a comprehensive format and delves deeply into the educational challenges faced by classroom teachers. Written specifically for the mainstream teacher, the guide clearly shows the effects of cultural differences on learning and presents an excellent treatment of cultural diversity and learning styles. It comes at a time when more than two million students nationwide with limited English proficiency fill our classrooms -- a time when today's teachers desperately need practical, effective resources to help these students succeed in school.

Bilingual By Choice: Raising Kids in Two (or More) Languages ReviewThis is the clearest, most practical guide I've ever read for parents wondering about the effects of multilingualism in the home. In today's globalizing world, more and more families have parents who speak different "mother tongues." In other homes, the language used at home may not be the language spoken in the dominant surrounding culture. Parents wonder, "Is it OK to teach a child different languages at the same time? What happens if I do? What happens if I don't? If I do,what are some good strategies?"
"Bilingual by Choice" not only gives clear answers to these questions based on solid research but the material is presented in an engaging, personal, and very readable style. It is a key book for educators who work with bi and multilingual children to read as well. I HIGHLY recommend it.Bilingual By Choice: Raising Kids in Two (or More) Languages OverviewBecoming bilingual is one thing-staying bilingual is another. Bilingual children have social, cultural and economic opportunities available to them that would otherwise be out of reach. For many families, speaking at least one language other than English at home is already a given-more than 51 million people in the U.S. alone live in multilingual homes. But what about when bilingual children go to English-speaking schools and are expected to thrive in a primarily monolingual English-speaking community? How do families maintain a balance and help their children to grow and develop in more than one language? In Bilingual By Choice, Virginie Raguenaud guides parents on how to introduce a second language to their children. She also provides insights, resources, and activities for raising children that will go on to become bilingual adults. This book is the first of its kind to address bilingualism from the cradle to adolescence. Raguenaud uses practical strategies and techniques for any family or instructor to ensure that kids stay engaged and active in every language available to them. By using creativity, consistency and commitment in the classroom (as well as the living room), teaching children a second language can be fun as well as beneficial.

Reading, Writing, & Learning in Esl: A Resource Book for K-8 Teachers ReviewThe book was easy to read, and was a practical guide that I used in teaching licensed teachers working to obtain a Bilingual/ESL State Endorsement. The teachers appreciated the way the book allowed them to choose topics of interest to their particular classroom. The vignettes about students and teachers were useful as examples so teachers could apply the methods and strategies to their own teaching situations. The review of language acquisition was helpful for teachers to understand the process in a practical way. Most of the teachers do not have linguistic degrees nor did they feel they needed extensive information to work in their classes but they did use the material about first and second language acquisition theories as they applied to real life teaching situations. As our district works with Native American students, the material on the role was culture was helfpul as most of the students are English speakers but have a cultural influence. The section of using multiple measures for assessment was useful but could contain more information.Reading, Writing, & Learning in Esl: A Resource Book for K-8 Teachers Overview

Bilingualism (Language in Society) ReviewRomaine provides an excellent introduction to the field of bilingualism. Of the texts I have read on the topic, this is perhaps the one that finds the best balance between readability and comprehensiveness. She covers the main subfields of bilingualism, and discusses numerous studies in the field. If you're just getting into the field, this will serve as a great guide, and you'll be able to find some great resources which you'll then be able to pursue independently. I strongly recommend this as the first book to read on bilingualism. After you read this, then you can move on to more advanced texts.Bilingualism (Language in Society) OverviewSince it was first published in 1989, Suzanne Romaine's book has been recognized as the most authoritative introduction to the sociolinguistics of bilingualism. The new edition has been completely revised to incorporate recent work in this fast developing field.Throughout the book, bilingualism is seen as both a societal and cognitive phenomenon. Professor Romaine explores various aspects of bilingual behavior, such as code switching and language mixing, in terms of neurolinguistic organization in the individual speaker. The author also assesses the positive and negative claims made for the effects of bilingualism on children's cognitive, social and academic development, and examines the assumptions behind various language policies and programs for bilingual children. In all this, Professor Romaine draws on her own research with Punjabi /Engllish bilinguals in Britain, and Tok Pisin/ English bilingual children in Papua New Guinea.

Teach Your Child Spanish Through Play, A Guide and Resource for Parents or Spanish for Kids, Games to Help Children Learn Spanish Language and Culture ReviewI was lucky enough to receive a pre-released copy of this wonderful resource! If you're a parent that understands the importance of second language acquisition, and really WANT to teach your child Spanish, but, but, but... This is the place to start! The author has written in a manner that flows and is easy to understand (none of that educator jargon) and truly gives practical, fun, and simple ways to experience Spanish with your child.
As you read, you feel like you're sitting at your kitchen table and she's just giving you some great advice!
Starr includes vocabulary lists in different sections, and the five different sections listed in the Table of Contents make it easy to use as a reference as well as a basis for HOW to teach Spanish (even if you don't know Spanish yourself). There is even a resource section that includes how to evaulate material, websites, books, language centers, camps, addresses for embassies, the works! For that section alone, the purchase is worth it!
Whether your child is a wiggly one, or a "sit and do worksheets type," this guide is a must-have. I'm impressed, somehow, she covers it all!

Teaching Reading and Writing in Spanish and English in Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms, Second Edition ReviewThis is a wonderful book! It is for teachers who think, reason and care more about teaching the students in front of them rather than graphs, rankings and standardized tests. The Freemans detail how the US political climate has impacted bilingual education since 1994 and offer solutions for teachers to navigate this crazy system.Teaching Reading and Writing in Spanish and English in Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms, Second Edition Overview
This second edition of the Freemans' classic text updates their ideas and strategies in response to new research and changing contexts for teaching reading and writing in both English and Spanish.

Between the growing number of Spanish-speaking students in dual language and bilingual classrooms and the increasing focus on accountability, teachers need a resource that gives them research-based instructional advice for helping all students meet standards while giving nonnative speakers access to the same high-quality education as their English-speaking peers. They must have the most effective methods for teaching reading and writing to students in two languages, and Teaching Reading and Writing in Spanish and English in Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms provides what teachers need.
The new edition includes:
a description of two approaches to teaching reading currently used in bilingual and dual language classes as well as the theory and research that supports each
classroom scenarios illustrating these approaches and how they connect to state standards
extended scenarios of effective teaching organized around themes in bilingual and dual language settings
bibliographies of literature and content books in Spanish and English that support theme-based instruction
an historical overview of reading instruction in Spanish and English with an analysis and evaluation of each method
an explanation of two views of teaching writing, including how each view looks in bilingual and dual language classes as well as the theory and research that supports each approach
a description of writing development in Spanish and English with student examples from each stage and level
writing instructional strategies that match students' developmental levels.
With updated references and new ways for educators to connect sound instruction to state standards, the Freemans provide teachers and administrators with the theory, research, and practical information they need to meet new challenges and help every student reach high levels of reading and writing proficiency.

When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8 ReviewThis book includes much information in an easy to read format. The information is presented in the first person and flows well. It does not read like a textbook or a research paper, but does include the knowledge of both.
The information provided in this book is helpful for all teachers of learning writers. While some sections pertain exclusively to English Language Learners, so much of the writing process is applicable to all learners. It is a great resource for teachers of writing.
The reason I only gave it four stars was that I found the book lacking in one area. The book does not have much discussion regarding English Language Learners who do not have an academic background in their home language. The research does show that it is best for students to be able to have strong foundation in their first language and the information will "transfer" to their second language. However, most of the students I have worked with do not have a foundation in their home language. They come to school, in kindergarten, without knowing how to read and write in their home language. Some parents will teach their kids at home, but many will not (they fear that it will hurt their child's chance of doing well in English. And yes, I do tell them that anything they learn in their home language will be of benefit to them. However, parents make the final decision as the school does not teach any other languages except English). It is for these students, learning a new language and learning academics at the same time, which I would love to see more research.
When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8 Overview
Unfair mythologies about English language learners have sprung up in schools around the country. Unsure how to help nonnative speakers write, some teachers and administrators have resorted to deficit-based stereotypes: ELLs can't write They have writing problems They are reluctant writers They need to be taught the skills of writing before writing independently.

In reality, however, ELLs benefit from the same smart, research-based instructional strategies as mainstream student writers, and in When English Language Learners Write, Katharine Davies Samway explores second language writers, shattering myths and in their place offering meaningful insight into powerful instruction.

When English Language Learners Write helps you connect the latest thinking on ELLs and language acquisition to your everyday classroom practices. Samway helps you understand numerous important factors affecting nonnative writers, including:
what young children know about print and about the connection between oral and written language
how their native language influences the process of learning to write in English
how gender, race, ethnicity, and social class affect writing
how adult expectations, school-based writing experiences, and participation in bilingual classrooms affect children's development as writers
which current developments in writing pedagogy help the most.
Then she shows you crucial steps to take for instruction that's responsive to language learners' needs, such as:
understanding the literacy practices of non-mainstream cultures
discovering what ELLs can do as writers before they become fluent in English
moving from looking at only the writing itself, to investigating writers' processes
providing a print-rich environment to cement the reading-writing connection and foster literate behaviors in a new tongue
incorporating reflective writing such as logs and dialogue journals to support ELLs' literacy development
providing a learner-centered workshop approach to teaching writing.
Not only does Samway provide a window into the latest research as well as practical teaching ideas, she takes you inside the minds and classroom experiences of five ELLs. She documents the ways they think, the products of their learning, and their progress as writers. You'll see firsthand how an instructional focus on what children can do helps nonnative speakers become fluid English writers more quickly than placing them in low-performing groups or falling back on pullout remediation.

Language is Music ReviewThe method in this book is in my opinion the best way to go about language learning but the book doesn't need to be bought in order to know the way. The whole book could be summed up in two words: total immersion. Immerse yourself in tv, music, reading, etc.
If you've been learning a language you already know this. If you're starting from point zero, the tips in this book might be helpful, but you are going to have to read through the author bragging about how "gifted" she is, going on and on about how it is a blessing and a curse. Give me a break and lets just learn some languages.Language is Music OverviewLanguage is Music focuses on making learning foreign languages fun, easy and affordable for anyone with a desire to communicate effectively with people around the world. By applying over 70 simple tips to things you already do, such as listening to music or surfing the Web, you can experience the joy of "fluency" in any language without having to study abroad or spend money on private tutors. In Language is Music, Susanna Zaraysky masterfully shares her listening methods so that anyone can have fun learning any language. With over 70 tips and 90 free or low-cost Internet resources, you will learn how to use daily activities, such as watching T.V. or listening to music; conversation partners; and attendance at cultural events to become a masterful speaker of any tongue. "Learning foreign languages is like learning to sing a song or play music," says self-made linguist Susanna Zaraysky and author of Language is Music. Zaraysky has what you might call "an ear" for languages, having used music to successfully learn English, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Serbo-Croatian-all with excellent accents.
Advance Praise for Language is Music "I love it! I think it will help people who want to learn, and those who are curious about additional language learning. Many people want to learn a language but are frightened, or disappointed by the courses they have taken. Reading Language is Music will encourage them to try again, on their own and with friendly supporters."-Dr. Elba Maldonado-Colon, Professor Department of Elementary Education Bilingual Program, San Jose State University
'LET IT JUST ROLL OFF YOUR TONGUE.With lyrical insight and solid experience, Susanna Zaraysky, author of Language is Music, provides easy steps for learning a language. Gone are the boring, disconnected strategies that most of us remember from school. You've never learned a language this quickly and easily. Zaraysky's methods embody fun, connection, rhythm, and above all...music."-Suzanne Lettrick, M.Ed Educator and Founder of The Global Education and Action Network
"Forget dictionaries and phrase books . . . Susanna Zaraysky's easy-to-use guide to language learning is indispensable for any serious language learner wanting to become fluent--not just conversationally proficient--in another language. Language is Music will teach you how to make language acquisition a part of your daily life, and to recreate the kind of total-immersion environment necessary for fluency. Highly recommended reading for aspiring polyglots. Pick up this book and you too will be all ears!"-Justin Liang, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Marshallese, intermediate Spanish
'Back in France, I spent many years learning "academic" English in school. But I progressed much faster when I forced myself to listen to the BBC or not look at the subtitles when watching an American movie. I wish I had Susanna's book with me then. It's full of creative ideas and practical tips that are indispensable complements to the traditional methods of learning foreign languages -- and it's coming from someone you can trust, she speaks so many of them!"-Philippe Levy, French native speaker
'This book is great. It showed me another aspect and a new approach of learning a language. I will put the book to good use. As a foreign English speaker, I spent many years at school learning English and did not make much progress. A lot of the tips that I read in this book, I learned them with time. However if I had read this book earlier, it would have made my life much easier and I would have saved so much time. I am going to apply the tips in Language is Music into learning a third language: Spanish. This time, I am sure I will make huge progress much faster. Not only is Language is Music useful in acquiring a foreign language, but the resources and websites in the book are valuable for someone who wants to travel abroad."-Fabien Hsu, French native speaker

Educating Emergent Bilinguals: Policies, Programs, and Practices for English Language Learners (Language & Literacy Series) (Language and Literacy Series) ReviewThis book has valuable information - it's just finding it. Underneath all of the advocacy for bilingual education there is good information about teaching language learners. I just wish that it wouldn't get so repetitious about bilingual education programs.Educating Emergent Bilinguals: Policies, Programs, and Practices for English Language Learners (Language & Literacy Series) (Language and Literacy Series) OverviewThis comprehensive and insightful book shows how present educational policies and practices to educate language minority students in the United States ignore an essential characteristic--their emergent bilingualism. Expanding on a popular report supported by the Campaign for Educational Equity (Teachers College), this accessible guide compiles the most up-to-date research findings to demonstrate how ignoring children's bilingualism perpetuates inequities in their schooling. What makes this book truly useful is that it offers a thorough description of alternative practices that would transform our schools and students' futures, such as building on students' home languages and literacy practices in schools, curricular and pedagogical innovations, new approaches to parent and community engagement, and adoptive assessment tools.

Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL: A Resource Book for Teaching K-12 English Learners (with MyEducationLab) (5th Edition) ReviewPeregoy and Boyle have written an outstanding resource book for elementary and secondary school teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs). This book focuses on the literacy development for ELL students which is so critical to their success in education and in life. The book includes relevant research information pertaining to second language aquisition, literacy development, and cultural issues. Theory is transformed into practice with solid guidance for teachers working with ELLs in process writing, literature study, and content area studies. Background information, scaffolding techniques, in-depth teacheing strategies, and activity examples are seamlessly merged into a tremendously helpful resource guide which enables teachers to truly employ "best practices" in classrooms with ELLs. I first used this book while obtaining a Master's degree in education, and as a classroom teacher, have found it to be an invaluable resource. It is well worth the (relatively small) monetary and time investment for any teacher who cares about offering ELL students the bast instruction possible.Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL: A Resource Book for Teaching K-12 English Learners (with MyEducationLab) (5th Edition) OverviewPraised for its strong research base, engaging style, and inclusion of specific teaching ideas, the Fifth Edition comprehensively examines oral language, vocabulary, writing, reading, and writing/content-based instruction in English for grades K-12 students. This Fifth Edition of Peregoy & Boyle's best-selling book continues the strengths of the Fourth Edition with its comprehensiveness and accessibility, providing a wealth of practical strategies for promoting literacy and language development in ELLs (K-12). Unlike many books in this field, Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL takes a unique approach by exploring contemporary language acquisition theory (as it relates to instruction) and providing suggestions and methods for motivating ELLs' English language, literacy and content area learning. The book highlights content-based instruction and features differentiated instruction for English language learners.
