The Independent Learner: A Practical Guide to Learning a Foreign Language at Home from Scratch to Functional ReviewNow a couple of years into my slow evolution into learning Spanish (learning a language means never being satisfied with your level) I received this book to see his tips on learning a language. And am I ever glad I did!
This book specializes in Spanish which the author learned but applies to all languages. It carries the author through all of the steps of learning a language and offers many different options. For example, this author used a self study course but that doesn't keep him from mentioning many that are available. Where this book really helped me is his focus on help on the internet. For example, you need to speak with others. I wasn't aware of the many resources on the web to do this with a "language learning partner". His appendix is chock full of recommendations that I'm sure will help me and take some time to select between. Also, there are helpful passages on many pages. One example is the time he deals with the shyness people have with sharing their new language due to lack of confidence. All who have tried a second language can identify with this and it's so important you fight through and not be afraid to work on your language even if you sometimes show your ignorance.
Overall, I found this a very quick but fulfilling read on tips for learning a second language which I definitely plan on using staring this week.
The Independent Learner: A Practical Guide to Learning a Foreign Language at Home from Scratch to Functional OverviewDon't you believe you can learn a foreign language without classes? Well, maybe not 20 years ago. It's now rather easy to find affordable or even free materials for studying a foreign language independently. Finding someone to practice with has also become much easier than it used to be. This book will enable you to: - teach yourself a language from scratch to a functional level anywhere and anytime you want;- choose the best learning materials for yourself; - enhance your language skills once you have a solid foundation; - stay motivated and persistent; - revive your confidence in your language and learning abilities; - make vocabulary stick, and turn the infamous enemy called grammar into an ally; - get the most out of a leisure trip abroad. The above are discussed with an emphasis on learning the Spanish language. However, the majority of the recommendations should apply to self-learners of other languages as well.

Finnish Dictionary & Phrasebook: Finnish-English/English-Finnish (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) ReviewI didn't expect for this book to be as amazing as it is. I have studied Finnish as a second language for a couple years now living in a very, very, small town where the Finns came to mine copper.my grandparents came from there and so being Finnish I've dreamed of going there and being able to speak properly. Even with proper classes and many books I have bought this one stands out the most. It has everything including a background of Finland and also the precise ways of adding the beginnings and endings which are VERY MANY for one word (the word Divine .. as "he is divine") has about 20 different ways to use it and when you become frustrated there is ALWAYS an incredible way they have of making it easier to understand. I can't say enough about it. You woin't be disappointed and as a longer book instead of making it very wide - it fits quite perfectly anywhere I place it. Purse, Laptop bad, Jacket pocket... everything. I'm delighted with the design of the book as well as the contents. You will not at ALL be disappointed I can assure you.
Suukkoja ja haleja xo Kiipis!
(kisses and hugs xo Cheers!)

Master the Basics Russian ReviewIf you're looking for an introduction to Russian, with dialogues and lessons, this book is not for you. It is, however, the clearest book I've found to explain the grammatical concepts. If you're self-teaching with tapes or software programs, you will most likey come to a point where you've learned an expression or a change in word endings without fully understanding the grammar behind it, this is where to look to quickly get the explanation. It does not contain much vocabulary, or full sentences, it is made up of chapters explaining particular grammatical structures and rules, so you're not going to learn to speak using this book alone.Master the Basics Russian OverviewThis volume uses both Roman and Cyrillic alphabets. It opens with a diagnostic self-test to help students determine what they already know of Russian and how to get best use from the book. Following chapters include a grammar brush-up covering all parts of speech, and special topics including Russian word formation, idioms, and much more.

Thai-English/English-Thai Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) ReviewAfter reading through this phrasebook, I've but two main observations. First is the positive. The tone markers are incredibly easy to understand, in fact, it is the best system I've seen so far. My only complaint is that there is absolutely no Thai scrpit in the book at all. So if you are having trouble pronouncing the word, your Thai friend/companion/etc. cannot simply read the Thai script and help you out. Other than that this is a nice phrasebook which has come in handy when I've used it in conjunction with other Thai language-learning materials.Thai-English/English-Thai Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) OverviewThis book provides basic grammar and the vocabulary and phrases essential to any traveller. All Thai words are spelled in the English alphabet, thus making it an easy reference for people unfamiliar with Thai script.

Easy French Reader ReviewI really enjoy this book. The texts are fun to read as well as easy to absorb. In a short time, i feel that my reading comphrehension skill level has shot up dramatically. There are a few reasons why this book is successful:
(1) Unlike other language programs which gives you set conversational pieces (which quickly becomes boring and too regimental), the stories in this book built on each other. Key phrases are repeated in different chapters to reinforce learning.
(2) the stories are memorable and fun to read. I've also found that in a very short time i've become very familiar with how phrases/sentences should be put together - something i had not experienced with other French learning materials. This teaching method is remarkably effective.
(3) Because the stories are so interesting, i want to read them over and over again. I would also recommend that you should read them aloud.
(4) Finally, it teaches you a lot about French culture and history. You will learn about all the important periods in French history, French kings, famous French authors and their works.
All in all, it is a very good book to supplement your French studies. Bonne chance, mes amis!!Easy French Reader Overview

Foreign Language Made Easy ReviewNot counting the introduction and preface, there are 88 pages of text. Not that this would matter if the information was actually helpful. Half of this is a survey of the foreign languages most commonly studied in the U.S. along with explanation of a few of the things that might cause confusion for a native English speaker. It's slightly useful, but you can get much better information from language-specific books.
Only 9 pages of the book actually try to give any tips for learning languages, and most of them are really general study tips like "pay attention in class" and "study and review every day." The only language-specific tips are: use flashcards for studying vocabulary and memorize grammatical structures by examples in context. The author also says you shouldn't listen to language tapes that have the English translations because it'll confuse you. He says that Instead you should listen to audio books and movies that are only in the foreign language. This may be okay for an advanced learner who already knows the language pretty well, but if you're just starting out it's ridiculous advice: it'll just sound like a meaningless jumble, you won't be able to pick out the separate words, much less understand what they mean.
The rest of the book has a few interesting tidbits about languages, clichés about why you should learn to speak a foreign language such as "it'll give you increased opportunities in business" and "it'll help you discover other cultures," a sample conjugation of an English verb to illustrate the names of the various tenses, and a glossary of grammatical terms that I found unhelpful because it's out of context and it doesn't explain terms that come up in the language-specific chapters such as "case.
I've read many books on learning foreign languages and the best of the lot by far is Language Logic: Practical and Effective Techniques to Learn Any Foreign Language. If you're interested in comparing the grammar of different languages, learning about language families, and getting an approach for learning several languages simultaneously, check out The Loom of Language: An Approach to the Mastery of Many Languages. It's a 690 page book and far from being easy reading, but it has excellent information on how the grammar of other language families compares to English and how they compare to each other, and a lot of good advice on how to go about learning a language in the quickest and most efficient way depending on your goals.Foreign Language Made Easy OverviewMany high school and university students find foreign language classes difficult. Although learning a language is a natural process, students study languages inefficiently and they lack effective strategies for language learning.
Foreign Language Made Easy is designed to make studying a foreign language an easy and enjoyable experience. The best techniques for foreign language success are explained in a simple format that anyone can follow. Effective techniques for note taking specifically designed for the foreign language classroom are addressed, as are successful methods to learn grammatical structures and effectively increase vocabulary.
The last sections of Foreign Language Made Easy are language-specific, and include the most common languages taught in the United States, such as Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Japanese, and Chinese. Common errors are explained, and simple techniques are presented that will help students to succeed.
Everyone can learn a foreign language. By following the suggestions presented in this text, even students that previously found learning a foreign language difficult will meet with success.

The Everything Learning French Book: Speak, Write, and Understand Basic French in No Time (Everything (Language & Writing)) ReviewFirst, this is an excellent French reference book. I took quite a bit of French in school, but needed some in-depth review so I could help my home-schooled daughter with her "passe compose". Perfect book for that... or if you need to review your reflexive verbs, etc. Well laid out... rules are explained in depth, but in very understandable terms.
Unfortunately, though, this book markets itself as a beginner's book. "Learning a language has never been so quick and easy - or so much fun!" the back cover boasts. I love the French language, but this is NOT a "fun" book... it is 98% grammar, 2% practice. You can literally go pages without seeing a sentence in French. The Everything Learning French Book: Speak, Write, and Understand Basic French in No Time (Everything (Language & Writing)) OverviewThis book helps you learn to speak the only other global language apart from English.Featuring easy-to-follow vocabulary lists, along with complete instruction on written and spoken grammar, this book and CD will have readers understanding everyday French and carrying basic conversations in a matter of days. You can learn the French alphabet and pronunciation; French etiquette; greetings for strangers, friends and family; the easiest way to ask questions; and day-to-day language for travelling, dining out, conducting business, and shopping.--This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) ReviewI've compared dozens of books about learning Russian from scratch, and this one is the best. There are advanced grammar texts out there which have more information, but they aren't geared toward beginners. The beauty of this book is that if you know absolutely nothing about Russian, you can start at the beginning and work your way through each lesson in the order presented, and by the time you're done, you will have a solid understanding of Russian grammar. Not only that, but you'll have a vocabulary of some of the most useful words in the Russian language.
When I first started studying Russian, I had no teachers or classes or cassette tapes to help me. My eighth grade math teacher gave me a copy of the original version of The Penguin Russian Course, which was compiled by J.L.I. Fennell and published in 1961. The methodology was logical and straightforward with no spoonfeeding or watered-down grammar lessons accompanied by cutsy cartoon pictures. In each lesson, you would first memorize a list of new vocabulary words. Then you would study several concise grammar principles which were clearly explained. Third, you would examine a brief Russian text which incorporated the new vocabulary and applied the new grammar principles which you had just learned in the lesson. Finally, you would translate an English text into Russian to test yourself on the new vocabulary and grammar. At the end of the book was a key which showed the correct translation of the English text into Russian, so you could check yourself.
This new version of the Penguin Russian Course is not as concise and straightforward as the first version, but it's actually better. Nicholas J. Brown has incorporated the original structure of J.L.I. Fennell's version enough that the effectiveness of the lessons is preserved, but Mr. Brown has added much more in this modern version. He has provided numerous additional Russian texts and conversations so that you can see how the vocabulary is used in context. And in this new version, the answer keys at the back of the book show the Russian-English translation as well as the English-Russian translation of the exercises.
The best part of this book is the translation exercises at the end of each lesson and their corresponding answer keys at the back of the book. Translation is probably the best way to test whether or not you really understand the grammar and vocabulary taught in the lessons, and this book gives you plenty of opportunities to test yourself in this manner.
Another advantage of this book is that it's small enough to carry anywhere, unlike those bulky Russian 101 textbooks used in college classes which use a slow, watered-down, almost infantile approach to teaching the language.
If you want to learn Russian, buy this book and work through the lessons. The only major drawback is that you'll never really learn proper pronunciation without listening to native Russians speak the language, and this book doesn't have tapes to accompany it. Other than that, however, you won't find a better book for beginners who want to learn Russian. The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) OverviewWhether you're learning alone or attending classes, you'll find this complete Russian language course for beginners both accessible and indispensable. Designed to provide the student with an excellent command of basic Russian (the equivalent of A level standard) this book features thirty lessons punctuated by revision exercises to ensure you have fully understood what you have learned. The emphasis is on acquiring vocabulary, experiencing conversational language and learning useful grammar. This book also includes a vocabulary of 1,500 words and a glossary of grammatical terms.

How to Learn Any Language Reviewthen this book will be your best source of inspiration, guidance, and encouragement. Farber's masterpiece will clue you in on the best techniques to learn any language, and, unlike other books of this kind, it actually promotes self-study. In truth, no one needs to take a class to learn a language. Just follow the simple, straightforward instructions, put in a little elbow grease, and you'll be well on your way to learning any language.
The book is divided into three parts: Part I is a lengthy (but very enjoyable) presentation of Farber's own story (and how he came to speak over 18 languages); Part II is the meat of the book, the actual system. This section contains the raw information needed to be successful at learning any language, which Farber himself concedes is the end result of years of poor decision-making, coupled with some very insightful (and at times accidental) choices, in the end distilled into the most helpful techniques. While some would claim that nothing here is revolutionary, I would like to add that nothing here hurts either! It's often important to find reinforcement of one's own arrived-upon ideas, and also to receive a new perspective on why something is the way it is. Part III is a small group of appendixes that mention the now unheard of (I can't find it!) Language Club in New York City, a list of the world's major languages, and also Farber's own notes (reviews, really) on the major languages (European and Asian).
If you've read this far, please do yourself a favor and get this book. The only reason I've cared to write so much about this book is because it really meant a lot to me to find this book when I was debating whether or not to spend the time, energy, and money to learn another language. I hope this book will help guide you to your destination, just as it's helped guide me to mine. Good luck! How to Learn Any Language OverviewThe following four basic priciples of the ground-breaking but simple system in H0w To Learn Any Language are hailed by language-teaching professionals everywhere: The Multiple Track Attack, Hidden Moments, The Harry Lorayne Magic Memory System and Plunge In. In How To Learn Any Language you'll discover how to make this system work for you.

Basic Tagalog for Foreigners and Non-Tagalogs (Tuttle Language Library) ReviewI guess I'm a little bit spoiled by some excellent material in other Asian languages. This isn't the worst language book I've ever worked through (Speak Cantonese, Book II, by Huang, unquestionably takes that honor) but it is definitely substandard in several areas that a language learner of even average interest and motivation would find important. I give it two stars mostly because one-and-a-half, which would have been my first choice, was not offered as an option.
First, most of the exercises are of the "do it yourself" variety, where one starts with a word list and is told to make up sentences from there. Even when the book does give the reader sentences to translate, there is no key in the back that would give any idea of how close to a correct sentence one had come;
Second, there are a number of sentences in the book where words are used which are not defined, either in the lesson or in the glossary in back, a particularly serious sin of omission since Tagalog dictionaries are not thick on the ground;
Third, there are no conversations, just freestanding sentences and short narratives, so one is left with very little (if any) idea about how Tagalog is actually used;
Fourth, very little about the book is cumulative: each chapter treats a separate area of Tagalog grammar topically, and only rarely, do the later lessons build on earlier ones.
I would guess that when this book was written, it was aimed at an audience of people who had access to Tagalog speakers on a regular basis (e.g., Americans living in the Phillipines). For someone who has had to use the book as his primary Tagalog source material,(rather than as a support) it just doesn't make the grade. I'm writing this review mostly as an urgent plea to Routledge, Teach Yourself, Hugo and other publishers who have brought out first-class materials for other languages: Help! Help! Help! Tagalog is a fascinating language indeed and it deserves better treatment than it has had up til now- if anything, this is probably the best Tagalog book I have.Basic Tagalog for Foreigners and Non-Tagalogs (Tuttle Language Library) OverviewTagalog, the language of the Philippines, is spoken by millions of people.Learn how to communicate with them in fifty carefully planned, eminently practical lessons in this self-study guide. Basic Tagalog intends to teach Tagalog to English speakers with a minimum of time and effort. It includes a structured introduction of eight hundred words of vocabulary, sufficient to cover daily needs; common idioms; and offers hints and study methods suggested by previous students of this method. After a small investment of time, you'll find yourself prepared for everyday situations and have a glimpse of the lives and culture of Filipinos around the world.

Teach Your Child Spanish Through Play, A Guide and Resource for Parents or Spanish for Kids, Games to Help Children Learn Spanish Language and Culture ReviewI was lucky enough to receive a pre-released copy of this wonderful resource! If you're a parent that understands the importance of second language acquisition, and really WANT to teach your child Spanish, but, but, but... This is the place to start! The author has written in a manner that flows and is easy to understand (none of that educator jargon) and truly gives practical, fun, and simple ways to experience Spanish with your child.
As you read, you feel like you're sitting at your kitchen table and she's just giving you some great advice!
Starr includes vocabulary lists in different sections, and the five different sections listed in the Table of Contents make it easy to use as a reference as well as a basis for HOW to teach Spanish (even if you don't know Spanish yourself). There is even a resource section that includes how to evaulate material, websites, books, language centers, camps, addresses for embassies, the works! For that section alone, the purchase is worth it!
Whether your child is a wiggly one, or a "sit and do worksheets type," this guide is a must-have. I'm impressed, somehow, she covers it all!

When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8 ReviewThis book includes much information in an easy to read format. The information is presented in the first person and flows well. It does not read like a textbook or a research paper, but does include the knowledge of both.
The information provided in this book is helpful for all teachers of learning writers. While some sections pertain exclusively to English Language Learners, so much of the writing process is applicable to all learners. It is a great resource for teachers of writing.
The reason I only gave it four stars was that I found the book lacking in one area. The book does not have much discussion regarding English Language Learners who do not have an academic background in their home language. The research does show that it is best for students to be able to have strong foundation in their first language and the information will "transfer" to their second language. However, most of the students I have worked with do not have a foundation in their home language. They come to school, in kindergarten, without knowing how to read and write in their home language. Some parents will teach their kids at home, but many will not (they fear that it will hurt their child's chance of doing well in English. And yes, I do tell them that anything they learn in their home language will be of benefit to them. However, parents make the final decision as the school does not teach any other languages except English). It is for these students, learning a new language and learning academics at the same time, which I would love to see more research.
When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8 Overview
Unfair mythologies about English language learners have sprung up in schools around the country. Unsure how to help nonnative speakers write, some teachers and administrators have resorted to deficit-based stereotypes: ELLs can't write They have writing problems They are reluctant writers They need to be taught the skills of writing before writing independently.

In reality, however, ELLs benefit from the same smart, research-based instructional strategies as mainstream student writers, and in When English Language Learners Write, Katharine Davies Samway explores second language writers, shattering myths and in their place offering meaningful insight into powerful instruction.

When English Language Learners Write helps you connect the latest thinking on ELLs and language acquisition to your everyday classroom practices. Samway helps you understand numerous important factors affecting nonnative writers, including:
what young children know about print and about the connection between oral and written language
how their native language influences the process of learning to write in English
how gender, race, ethnicity, and social class affect writing
how adult expectations, school-based writing experiences, and participation in bilingual classrooms affect children's development as writers
which current developments in writing pedagogy help the most.
Then she shows you crucial steps to take for instruction that's responsive to language learners' needs, such as:
understanding the literacy practices of non-mainstream cultures
discovering what ELLs can do as writers before they become fluent in English
moving from looking at only the writing itself, to investigating writers' processes
providing a print-rich environment to cement the reading-writing connection and foster literate behaviors in a new tongue
incorporating reflective writing such as logs and dialogue journals to support ELLs' literacy development
providing a learner-centered workshop approach to teaching writing.
Not only does Samway provide a window into the latest research as well as practical teaching ideas, she takes you inside the minds and classroom experiences of five ELLs. She documents the ways they think, the products of their learning, and their progress as writers. You'll see firsthand how an instructional focus on what children can do helps nonnative speakers become fluid English writers more quickly than placing them in low-performing groups or falling back on pullout remediation.

First Arabic Reader bilingual for speakers of English: First Arabic Reader bilingual for speakers of English with bidirectional dictionary and on-line resources incl. audiofiles (Arabic Edition) ReviewI believe this book could be a good addition to a beginner's arsenal for learning the language. But I was a bit surprised at the vocab to reading sample ratio. The publishers of this series claim that it uses the ALARM method, which is supposed to improve retention by allowing the reader to see the same words over and over again. Based on this claim, I expected the words from each vocab list, along with the previous words, to be repeated many times across several pages of reading before another vocab list is introduced. However, throughout the book the progression iterates between a page of 25-60 new words, followed by a mere 2 pages of reading. They do reuse the words from each list in the subsequent readings and as far as I can tell all words are repeated periodically (some more than others for obvious reasons), but I feel that the onslaught of new vocab makes it very difficult to retain all of the previously learned vocab. The author/publishers could have done well to have more reading samples between each vocabulary lists to allow for adequate retention. Also, the English translation is directly to the right of the sentence which I found to be both good and bad. I was initially quite annoyed by this as I wanted to be able to try and read/understand the passages for myself without the temptation to cheat. It's like trying to do a crossword puzzle with the answer on the same page, it's just too easy to look if you get stuck. But then, that's the point. The author/publishers want you to be able to see the translation so that you can understand the passage and really I found this to be quite helpful in the long run.
That being said, it is a useful book as the goal of improving reading comprehension and speed will be achieved (just don't expect any discussions on grammar or word/sentence structures cause none will be found). Also, the audio tracks are quite helpful (although a little fast, for my taste). Yet, here is another potentially negative point: only the audio tracks for the first 10 chapters are available on line from lppbooks.com,(which, incidentally is mentioned at the bottom of every page, so I don't know how the previous reviewer could have missed it). You will have to buy the additional tracks from the amazon website(there is a link on the lppbooks.com website right after the 10th track). They are grouped in to 5-6 chapter bundles for around $5 a piece, or you can buy them individually for $0.89 (which is nice, because you can buy each one individually as you get to that chapter). The whole set will cost you around $20.First Arabic Reader bilingual for speakers of English: First Arabic Reader bilingual for speakers of English with bidirectional dictionary and on-line resources incl. audiofiles (Arabic Edition) OverviewFirst Arabic Reader for beginners bilingual for speakers of English. The book consists of Elementary and Pre-intermediate courses. The author maintains learners' motivation with funny stories about real life situations such as meeting people, studying, job searches, working etc. The ALARM method (Approved Learning Automatic Remembering Method) utilize natural human ability to remember words used in texts repeatedly and systematically. The author had to compose each sentence using only words explained in previous chapters. The second and the following chapters of the Elementary course have only 29 new words each. All audio tracks are available on lppbooks.com for free download.

Speak Like A Native: Professional Secrets for Mastering Foreign Languages ReviewThis one of three books I have read about learning foreign languages, and by far this book is the best for the cost. The book contains practical and useful information for anyone interested in learning a foreign language. There is little fluff contained in this book, and the author stays on topic with personal experiences interspersed into the text. His experiences tend to drive home a point.
The author starts with how and why establishing goals for your target language is essential, and progresses to 50 tips used by language learners. The author used many of the tips to learn two languages -- Chinese-Mandarin, and Vietnamese.
This book makes no guarantees, and points out that learning a foreign language takes work. The author ensures the fledging language learner understands the fact that learning a language will require effort.
This book contains quality information for learning a foreign language, and the book is easy to read. Overall a quality buy for learning quality tips and tricks on improving your odds at effectively learning a foreign language. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn a foreign language!
Speak Like A Native: Professional Secrets for Mastering Foreign Languages OverviewThis is a distillation of the techniques and strategies used by the author and other professional linguists from the Defense Language Institute, State Department, CIA, NSA and other government agencies. It includes the 10 rules for establishing and achieving your goals, the author's unique 12-step process for accelerating your learning and 50 proven tips favored by the pros. Formal Spoken Arabic Basic Course (Georgetown Classics in Arabic Language and Linguistics) ReviewThis is a great course. The dialogs in this course are interesting and sound similar to modern standard Arabic yet they have a more authentic feel. That seems to be the intent of the authors in their using an educated form of spoken Arabic. It is not as dialectal as pure amiyya, and it is not as formal as modern standard Arabic.
After learning a dialog one can go back and listen to it in its entirety without having to listen to one sentence spoken in Arabic and the next sentence in English and then back and forth in this manner. This a big plus for me. (There is only a little bit of recorded translation in the opening of the book.)
The lessons are very explanitive. The basic dialouges have detailed commentaries. Besides the audio, there is the text written in Arabic (no transliteration into English is found anywhere in the book), a detailed list of vocabulary, and sometimes the audio is given a second time at a slower pace so that one can repeat after the speaker.
The matrix dialouge is not explained at all, but it is made easier in that the subject matter is very similar to the basic dialouge's material. It is supposed to be hard, and it forces you to stretch out your ears a bit to try to catch all of the phrases. I found that the matrix dialouge is much easier after completing the unit that it is in, and it often contains the most natural sounding material.
There are also drills and grammar explanations. There are no answer keys for the drills, but they should be beneficial anyways.
Overall, this is arguably one of the best books for learning Arabic. One should have a fairly decent command of modern standard or classical Arabic before starting the course. (Don't attempt this book if you are a beginner.) It is good for building upon the knowledge of a literay form of Arabic in order to learn a spoken form. It doesn't teach any dialect of Arabic in particular. It is suppossed to be a somewhat neutral/educated form of speaking Arabic, but it does have somewhat of a Levantine feel to it at times.
Formal Spoken Arabic Basic Course (Georgetown Classics in Arabic Language and Linguistics) OverviewThis new edition, updated and with additional exercises, equips those who work, travel, and study in Arab countries with an educated form of spoken Arabic that functions flexibly in the face of various regional colloquial variants in the Arab world. Because the Arabic language has a number of very different spoken vernaculars, being able to speak and be understood in all Arab countries has become a challenge for English speakers. Ryding and Mehall have designed a course that teaches a standardized variant of spoken Arabic that is close to, but more natural than, the literary Modern Standard Arabic. With a non-grammar-based approach, this book fosters communicative competence in Arabic on all levels and develops speaking proficiency without abandoning Arabic script. It has proven to be clear, effective, and relevant to the needs of Americans living and working in the Arab East.Task-based lessons feature basic dialogues between Americans and Arabs, explanations of new structures, vocabulary expansion, and exercises; and provide gradual access to the sounds and script of Arabic by emphasizing listening and reading comprehension first, then slowly adding oral exercises and activities until the student has achieved basic proficiency. Not intended for self-instruction for beginners, "Formal Spoken Arabic Basic Course with MP3 Files" assumes some previous knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic, Arabic script and phonology, and previous or simultaneous instruction in orthography. This new edition includes a CD of MP3 audio exercises that are keyed to the text and drill students on listening and speaking. Lessons cover topics including: Heads of State; Cities and Countries; Official Titles; Geography; Systems of Government; Lost Luggage; Getting Acquainted; Establishing Common Ground; Seeking and Giving Information; Personal Needs and Family; Handling Problems; Eating Out; and, Bargaining and Buying.

Language is Music ReviewThe method in this book is in my opinion the best way to go about language learning but the book doesn't need to be bought in order to know the way. The whole book could be summed up in two words: total immersion. Immerse yourself in tv, music, reading, etc.
If you've been learning a language you already know this. If you're starting from point zero, the tips in this book might be helpful, but you are going to have to read through the author bragging about how "gifted" she is, going on and on about how it is a blessing and a curse. Give me a break and lets just learn some languages.Language is Music OverviewLanguage is Music focuses on making learning foreign languages fun, easy and affordable for anyone with a desire to communicate effectively with people around the world. By applying over 70 simple tips to things you already do, such as listening to music or surfing the Web, you can experience the joy of "fluency" in any language without having to study abroad or spend money on private tutors. In Language is Music, Susanna Zaraysky masterfully shares her listening methods so that anyone can have fun learning any language. With over 70 tips and 90 free or low-cost Internet resources, you will learn how to use daily activities, such as watching T.V. or listening to music; conversation partners; and attendance at cultural events to become a masterful speaker of any tongue. "Learning foreign languages is like learning to sing a song or play music," says self-made linguist Susanna Zaraysky and author of Language is Music. Zaraysky has what you might call "an ear" for languages, having used music to successfully learn English, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Serbo-Croatian-all with excellent accents.
Advance Praise for Language is Music "I love it! I think it will help people who want to learn, and those who are curious about additional language learning. Many people want to learn a language but are frightened, or disappointed by the courses they have taken. Reading Language is Music will encourage them to try again, on their own and with friendly supporters."-Dr. Elba Maldonado-Colon, Professor Department of Elementary Education Bilingual Program, San Jose State University
'LET IT JUST ROLL OFF YOUR TONGUE.With lyrical insight and solid experience, Susanna Zaraysky, author of Language is Music, provides easy steps for learning a language. Gone are the boring, disconnected strategies that most of us remember from school. You've never learned a language this quickly and easily. Zaraysky's methods embody fun, connection, rhythm, and above all...music."-Suzanne Lettrick, M.Ed Educator and Founder of The Global Education and Action Network
"Forget dictionaries and phrase books . . . Susanna Zaraysky's easy-to-use guide to language learning is indispensable for any serious language learner wanting to become fluent--not just conversationally proficient--in another language. Language is Music will teach you how to make language acquisition a part of your daily life, and to recreate the kind of total-immersion environment necessary for fluency. Highly recommended reading for aspiring polyglots. Pick up this book and you too will be all ears!"-Justin Liang, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Marshallese, intermediate Spanish
'Back in France, I spent many years learning "academic" English in school. But I progressed much faster when I forced myself to listen to the BBC or not look at the subtitles when watching an American movie. I wish I had Susanna's book with me then. It's full of creative ideas and practical tips that are indispensable complements to the traditional methods of learning foreign languages -- and it's coming from someone you can trust, she speaks so many of them!"-Philippe Levy, French native speaker
'This book is great. It showed me another aspect and a new approach of learning a language. I will put the book to good use. As a foreign English speaker, I spent many years at school learning English and did not make much progress. A lot of the tips that I read in this book, I learned them with time. However if I had read this book earlier, it would have made my life much easier and I would have saved so much time. I am going to apply the tips in Language is Music into learning a third language: Spanish. This time, I am sure I will make huge progress much faster. Not only is Language is Music useful in acquiring a foreign language, but the resources and websites in the book are valuable for someone who wants to travel abroad."-Fabien Hsu, French native speaker

Spoken Persian (Spoken Language Ser) ReviewThis is one of the Spoken Language Series, which began during the Second World War when the U.S. government hired the best linguists of the day to produce courses that would teach languages to soldiers fast. It is the same method used to teach languages to U.S. diplomats today.
The book presents colloquial, everyday language and teaches forms that appear only in conversation. It is not as useful for learning reading. It is an effective and very enjoyable way to learn languages.
However, the student should also consider Wheeler Thackston's "Introduction to Persian," which is more recent, and has, in my opinion, caused "Spoken Persian" to drop to second place. Thackston has nine sound cassettes available--if not from the book dealer, then from the publisher (that is where I got them); it teaches spoken and written Persian, lacks the defects of previous textbooks, and is more thorough, effective and enjoyable than any of its rivals.Spoken Persian (Spoken Language Ser) OverviewEveryday speech in Iran. Talking With Your Hands, Listening With Your Eyes: A Complete Photographic Guide to American Sign Language ReviewThis book is an excellent introduction to ASL and Deaf culture issues. There is a manageable number of basic signs and insets providing details about being deaf in a hearing world, information on famous deaf people, and technological advances useful for the deaf. The introduction also contains a concise history of deaf education. The author is extremely credible, which is something important to me when learning a new language!
From the instruction of a single deaf individual, I have developed a rudimenary knowledge of sign language: the alphabet, numbers, various greetings, some nouns and adjectives. This book has helped me to reinforce what I know, clean up the sloppy signing I had been doing, and learn new things. I have had trouble learning signs from books in the past because I would often miss something important. With this book, I've felt very comfortable with the new signs because of the format. The combination of specific written descriptions with pictures gives a very understandable way to learn new signs. The added bonus of mnemonic devices to remember which sign is which is very helpful. It's embarrassing to admit, but I kept confusing the signs for "yes" and "no" until I read the helpful hints in this book - not a good thing to get wrong!
There may be books with more words in them, but I would recommend this book for all beginners, and advanced beginners like myself. Once the signs here are learned (and as in my case cleaned up considerably), then start looking for more comprehensive works. I've been practicing about 30-100 words a night depending on how many I already knew and feel very confident that I'm finally doing them correctly.Talking With Your Hands, Listening With Your Eyes: A Complete Photographic Guide to American Sign Language Overview
