Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition ReviewThe Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics provides a concise place where the language teacher or language researcher can find definitions of terms they don't remember in their field of specialization. It gives not only lengthy contextualized definitions but also provides references for those who want to look deeper into a topic. The dictionary also provides cross references to other relevant definitions.
The only thing that might be considered in revision is putting the words into categories under specialization as a possible appendix (i.e. sociolinguistics, language testing, psycholinguistics). This might help and entice the reader to look at the dictionary as a learning tool as well as a reference tool. This would provide an additional way to use the dictionary in order to learn specific vocabulary for a specialization under the umbrella of applied linguistics or language teaching.Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition OverviewThis Dictionary is an essential tool for students of applied linguistics, language teaching, TEFL, and introductory courses in general linguistics and explainsthose difficult theoretical terms which students may encounteraccross these fields.

From Corpus to Classroom: Language Use and Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) ReviewIt is easy to read with lots of examples. Gives planty of ideas if you are interested in corpus study. From Corpus to Classroom: Language Use and Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) OverviewFrom Corpus to Classroom summarises and makes accessible recent work in corpus research, focusing particularly on spoken data. It is based on analysis of corpora such as CANCODE and Cambridge International Corpus, and written with particular reference to the development of corpus-informed pedagogy. The book explains how corpora can be designed and used, and focuses on what they tell us about language teaching. It examines the relevance of corpora to materials writers, course designers and language teachers and considers the needs of the learner in relation to authentic data. It shows how the answers to key questions such as 'Is there a basic, everyday vocabulary for English?', 'How should idioms be taught?' and 'What are the most common spoken language chunks?' are best explored by means of a clearer understanding of the workings of language in context.

When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8 ReviewThis book includes much information in an easy to read format. The information is presented in the first person and flows well. It does not read like a textbook or a research paper, but does include the knowledge of both.
The information provided in this book is helpful for all teachers of learning writers. While some sections pertain exclusively to English Language Learners, so much of the writing process is applicable to all learners. It is a great resource for teachers of writing.
The reason I only gave it four stars was that I found the book lacking in one area. The book does not have much discussion regarding English Language Learners who do not have an academic background in their home language. The research does show that it is best for students to be able to have strong foundation in their first language and the information will "transfer" to their second language. However, most of the students I have worked with do not have a foundation in their home language. They come to school, in kindergarten, without knowing how to read and write in their home language. Some parents will teach their kids at home, but many will not (they fear that it will hurt their child's chance of doing well in English. And yes, I do tell them that anything they learn in their home language will be of benefit to them. However, parents make the final decision as the school does not teach any other languages except English). It is for these students, learning a new language and learning academics at the same time, which I would love to see more research.
When English Language Learners Write: Connecting Research to Practice, K-8 Overview
Unfair mythologies about English language learners have sprung up in schools around the country. Unsure how to help nonnative speakers write, some teachers and administrators have resorted to deficit-based stereotypes: ELLs can't write They have writing problems They are reluctant writers They need to be taught the skills of writing before writing independently.

In reality, however, ELLs benefit from the same smart, research-based instructional strategies as mainstream student writers, and in When English Language Learners Write, Katharine Davies Samway explores second language writers, shattering myths and in their place offering meaningful insight into powerful instruction.

When English Language Learners Write helps you connect the latest thinking on ELLs and language acquisition to your everyday classroom practices. Samway helps you understand numerous important factors affecting nonnative writers, including:
what young children know about print and about the connection between oral and written language
how their native language influences the process of learning to write in English
how gender, race, ethnicity, and social class affect writing
how adult expectations, school-based writing experiences, and participation in bilingual classrooms affect children's development as writers
which current developments in writing pedagogy help the most.
Then she shows you crucial steps to take for instruction that's responsive to language learners' needs, such as:
understanding the literacy practices of non-mainstream cultures
discovering what ELLs can do as writers before they become fluent in English
moving from looking at only the writing itself, to investigating writers' processes
providing a print-rich environment to cement the reading-writing connection and foster literate behaviors in a new tongue
incorporating reflective writing such as logs and dialogue journals to support ELLs' literacy development
providing a learner-centered workshop approach to teaching writing.
Not only does Samway provide a window into the latest research as well as practical teaching ideas, she takes you inside the minds and classroom experiences of five ELLs. She documents the ways they think, the products of their learning, and their progress as writers. You'll see firsthand how an instructional focus on what children can do helps nonnative speakers become fluid English writers more quickly than placing them in low-performing groups or falling back on pullout remediation.

Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) ReviewUnlike some books on English language teaching, "Approaches and Methods" by Richards and Rodgers is a logically organised, relatively jargon-free and easily grasped book. It is almost certain you will not be diving for the headache tablets after this book.
Covering a large range of the historical and current second language teaching methodologies, the book discusses methods in a logical format that is the same throughout. They discuss three broad areas: Approach, (the theories and ideas underpinning the method), Design, (roles, materials and so on), and Procedure, (what happens in the classroom). This makes each chapter exceptionally well-organised.
The book covers a lot of different methods, including those that are less in favour these days, as well as some that are more recent. However, some very recent developments are not included, such as the controversial Dogme of Thornbury and Medding. What *is* in the book includes Suggestopaedia, TPR, NLP, Natural Way, Multiple Intelligences and more. All of them come with a brief discussion on the background that they came from.
This is an incredibly valuable book for a run down on the methodologies that have come and gone, (some still on the way out). It is an excellent resource that serves well as a reference, or something to be read from cover-to-cover. Or both.Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) OverviewThis new edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching. This new edition is an extensive revision of the first edition of this successful text. Like the first edition, it surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching, such as grammar translation, audiolingualism, communicative language teaching, and the natural approach. This edition includes new chapters on topics such as whole language, multiple intelligences, neurolinguistic programming, competency-based language teaching, cooperative language learning, content-based instruction, task-based language teaching, and the Post-Methods Era. Teachers and teachers-in-training will discover that this second edition is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the major and minor teaching methods used around the world.

How Languages Are Learned (Oxford Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI really recommend this book as an introduction to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) reasearch. It was written with the language teacher in mind. Many of the other books on the subject are focused on the researcher rather than the teacher, so this book fills a gap in the literature. The explanations of the major theories are carried out without frequent use of jargon, so it's easy for the beginner to get a handle on SLA theory. I even recommend this for students who are studying SLA in graduate school. This will provide an excellent introduction that could be read before reading more difficult texts. After readinging "How Languages Are Learned", you'll understand more in depth discussions about the theories covered. A must for all practicing language teachers. How Languages Are Learned (Oxford Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewThis thoroughly updated third edition presents the main theories of language acquisition, considering their bearing on language teaching. It discusses the effects of factors such as intelligence, personality, and age.It helps teachers assess the merits of different methods and textbooks. This new edition includes more information on theories of first language acquisition and early bilingualism, and the affects of motivation and style.

Second Language Acquisition: An Advanced Resource Book (Routledge Applied Linguistics) ReviewI had the opportunity to hear Kees de Bot speak at a national TESOL conference. His talk on second language acquisition being a Dynamic System (DST) was eye-opening. I was enthusiastic to order this book and I wasn't disappointed. DST is an exciting new paradigm of looking at second language acquisition. DST takes its roots from Chaos Theory (remember Jurrassic Park!) and is a relatively new way of looking at second language acquisition. This text also has a unique middle section. Kees de Bot has included several important journal articles into the middle section. However, de Bot, involves the reader by stopping the journal article to make relevant points, or to ask the reader to reflect on what the author of the journal article is trying to say. Instead of just reading the article, it's as if you're involved in a self-study session with de Bot as your guide. This is very valuable. De Bot writes clearly, despite it being a difficult topic, yet the book is one that will repay re-reading.Second Language Acquisition: An Advanced Resource Book (Routledge Applied Linguistics) OverviewSecond Language Acquisition:introduces the key areas in the field, including multilingualism, the role of teaching, the mental processing of multiple languages, and patterns of growth and declineexplores the key theories and debates and elucidates areas of controversygathers together influential readings from key names in the discipline, including: Vivian Cook, William E. Crossing Cultures in the Language Classroom (Michigan Teacher Resource) ReviewI am a teacher educator who has used this book four times in an MA TESOL program course on Cross-Cultural Communication in the United States. I am now teaching in Korea, and I decided to use this book in a Cross-Cultural Communication course for MA English Education program students. I found the book very useful in both settings. I especially found the very clearly written English at a level for international students. Most students have said they could easily comprehend the concepts. American students also appreciated the clarity of the discussion. But, the most valuable feature of this book is the many very creative and thoughtful activities in the book. I have 40 years of teaching and teacher education experience, and I give these activities a very high score. They have been thoughtfully processed, and I imagine most of the activities have been tested through the authors' classroom experience. I highly recommend this book. It will open the eyes of the readers to see culture and cross-cultural communication in clear and highly significant ways.Crossing Cultures in the Language Classroom (Michigan Teacher Resource) OverviewCrossing Cultures in the Language Classroom links theory with experiential activities that will be helpful for use in teacher training or certificate programs. The goals of this book for the teacher educator are to expand cultural awareness, to acquire an in-depth understanding of what culture is and its relationship to language, and to comprehend and implement observations of cultural similarities and differences.Topics discussed in the book include:culture shocknonverbal communicationsocietal rolespragmatics.A great in-service workshop text or teacher training programs.

Working with Images Paperback with CD-ROM: A Resource Book for the Language Classroom (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewThis is a wonderful book that provides teachers with the resources to supplement a variety of topics related not just to art, but to history, social studies, and language. For students who have a visual learning style, these images should enliven a variety of topics. The CD is easy to use and the suggested activities can be adapted to many different teaching and learning objectives. It is worth spending some time with this book to become familiar with the ways the images can enrich language, content and critical thinking lessons. It can be used at all levels from elementary to college levels and with students with varying levels of language proficiency. I recommend it for use in teacher professional development courses, as well.
