Dictation: New Methods, New Possibilities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI teach a intermediate/advanced reading and writing class in an adult English as a Second Language program in Arlington, Virginia, and this book is by far my favorite resource. My students are always asking for dictations, and this book provides stimulating twists on the standard dictation. Each activity is rated as to the difficulty and adaptability level, and most activities are adaptable to different levels. The book provides activities for groups and pair work, which is so important in the adult ESL classroom. The activities really get the students excited, and many get them up and moving around. A favorite is an activity called "Messenger and Scribe" in which one student reads from a prepared text taped to the wall in the hallway, remembers what he or she has read, and returns to the classroom to dictate to the "Scribe" in the pair what the text says. This provides excellent opportunities for self-correction, and different prepared texts can be used for different level students in a multi-level classroom.I highly recommend this book to any teacher who is looking for a new way to present an old favorite. If reading and writing is even a small part of the class that you teach, this book should be on your shelf.Dictation: New Methods, New Possibilities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewDictation contains a wealth of new techniques to extend the traditional language-learning activity of dictation. The authors present some thought-provoking answers to such apparently simple questions as: Who chooses the text? Who dictates? Who corrects? What and how do they correct? The activities range from traditional focuses on spelling and punctuation problems to exercise that emphasize personal attitudes and opinions of both teachers and students. Dictation provides: activities suitable for a wide range of levels and ages; example texts for many activities, with permission to copy; opportunities for students to create their own texts; a variety of suggested correction techniques; suggestions for using dictation in teacher training.

Ways of Doing: Students Explore their Everyday and Classroom Processes (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI found this book, like all of the books in the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers series, very interesting to read. Davis and Rinvolucri always write books that are full of unusual ideas. This book is, too. However, I found it less useful than their other books as a source of things to do in class, because most of the activities in this book are simply too unusual, and will require an exceptionally charismatic teacher to make them work. I teach English in Asia, and I have found that the students here are much less willing to accept new or strange techniques than are European and North American students. To sum up, the book may open up to you a new and fruitful way of designing activities for class, but I don't think that you will be able to use many of the specific activities that they present.Ways of Doing: Students Explore their Everyday and Classroom Processes (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewWays of Doing helps students discover how they do things, both inside and outside the classroom. Based largely on humanistic principles, it over 100 activities designed to encourage students to think, speak and write in English about areas they may never have discussed in their mother tongue. Ways of Doing is a rich source of stimulating and easy-to-use lesson ideas requiring minimal preparation. The activities, which are suitable for a range of levels and ages, deal with the following areas:- examining the patterns and processes in students' everyday life- exploring both the mother tongue and the foreign language- group dynamics- exploring and exploiting the course book- ways of learning- correction and feedback. There is also a special teacher development section.

Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) ReviewUnlike some books on English language teaching, "Approaches and Methods" by Richards and Rodgers is a logically organised, relatively jargon-free and easily grasped book. It is almost certain you will not be diving for the headache tablets after this book.
Covering a large range of the historical and current second language teaching methodologies, the book discusses methods in a logical format that is the same throughout. They discuss three broad areas: Approach, (the theories and ideas underpinning the method), Design, (roles, materials and so on), and Procedure, (what happens in the classroom). This makes each chapter exceptionally well-organised.
The book covers a lot of different methods, including those that are less in favour these days, as well as some that are more recent. However, some very recent developments are not included, such as the controversial Dogme of Thornbury and Medding. What *is* in the book includes Suggestopaedia, TPR, NLP, Natural Way, Multiple Intelligences and more. All of them come with a brief discussion on the background that they came from.
This is an incredibly valuable book for a run down on the methodologies that have come and gone, (some still on the way out). It is an excellent resource that serves well as a reference, or something to be read from cover-to-cover. Or both.Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) OverviewThis new edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching. This new edition is an extensive revision of the first edition of this successful text. Like the first edition, it surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching, such as grammar translation, audiolingualism, communicative language teaching, and the natural approach. This edition includes new chapters on topics such as whole language, multiple intelligences, neurolinguistic programming, competency-based language teaching, cooperative language learning, content-based instruction, task-based language teaching, and the Post-Methods Era. Teachers and teachers-in-training will discover that this second edition is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the major and minor teaching methods used around the world.

Drama Techniques: A Resource Book of Communication Activities for Language Teachers, Third Edition ReviewThe introduction (not given in "Look Inside"), provides the premises behind this resource book of communication activities, and is a must for any teacher, and not only for EFL teachers.
The approach to learning is so different from what we have all endured at school, and even though clearly presented with tangible examples, it is so rich that no review could do justice to the massive foundation stones provided.
The introduction is a tool: what to consider when creating a living classroom environment for sparking natural communication. The instructions for choosing and leading the exercises provided (use "Look Inside" to see the categories in Contents) show how to put the theory into practice in your language acquiring workshop. Competence in the use of the target language in the real world is clearly acquired, even though the language isn't directly ""taught" during these workshops.
Each and every student is emotionally and physically involved and the lively group dynamics engendered, the imaginative creating, and the obvious fun of the students make the class a joy for the teacher to witness.
It is advisable to use professional level classrooms where movement is possible, and where more than one person can speak at the same time without it becoming irritating noise. The ideal group size for any EFL workshop is 12, but I have used the approach successfully with 40, and once 80 (:o) in an appropriately sized room.
The edition used for this review dates back to 1982 but the the whole approach is still revolutionary for most teachers.
First, read the introduction again and again, try out the "A day's work" (9am to 5pm for an intensive course but which can be spread out over an extensive course), and from then on design your own mix. Quite soon, you will adapt the exercises and even design your own exercises based on this common sense approach.
Have fun :)Drama Techniques: A Resource Book of Communication Activities for Language Teachers, Third Edition OverviewThe fully revised edition of this 'classic' helps teachers give their learners the tools they need to express themselves through a range of stimulating drama contexts. This completely revised edition of the classic title Drama Techniques provides:*150 ideas for interesting and productive fluency practice*a large selection of drama-based techniques which focus learners' attention on communicative tasks or activities*techniques suitable for all levels*clear instructions for the teacher*advice on how to use the techniques in the classroom

Five-Minute Activities: A Resource Book of Short Activities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewFive-minute Activities contains over 130 ideas for the foreign language classroom in its 100 pages. I read this book from cover to cover, and was pleased to be able to make many notes for my future lessons. Some of the activities are actually quite common, and perhaps most teachers would be aware of them, but there were many good ones that I'd never come across, including a few gems. Some are literally five-minute fillers, while others are worthy of spending maybe a whole lesson on. If I had to make a tentative criticism, it'd be that many of the suggestions have students generating language that would never be heard beyond the walls of an EFL classroom. For example, "A pencil is thinner than an elephant." I have mixed feelings about whether this is such a bad thing or not. On the one hand, students can practice structurally correct forms of language and learn whilst having fun. On the other hand, Five-minute Activities doesn't really present them with many opportunities to practise for situations in the real world, which may, of course, not be as fun. Also, I felt that there was a bias for activities that focused on self-disclosure, or competing to be the best in the class. Great, perhaps, for European or South American students of English, but not quite so good for students at my secondary school here in Japan. Overall, I'm pleased to have this book for reference, and I'd recommend it to most of my colleagues, even if some of the suggestions reminded me of what it used to be like as a pupil at a British elementary school.Five-Minute Activities: A Resource Book of Short Activities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewFive-Minute Activities is an invaluable source of ideas for language teachers. It contains resources of over 130 short activities for the language classroom: some are well-tried favourites clearly restated, others are new ideas or variations. Teachers will find activities which can be used to: * help learners to learn or practise particular aspects of language * help students and teacher to get to know each other * provide a smooth transition between two major parts of a lesson * supplement a coursebook * introduce or round off lessons. The activities are designed to combine learning value with interest and enjoyment. Most of them can be adapted to suit classes of different levels of ability, and in many cases there are additional suggestions for variations or extensions of the basic activity. Almost all the activities can be student-led.
