The Art of Teaching Spanish: Second Language Acquisition from Research to Praxis ReviewThis is a solid review of the main issues and challenges to effectively teaching Spanish. It has provided me with a good launching pad to deeper investigation of some key concerns such as how to best teach adults, what are some limitations and best uses of online instruction and what are some considerations to take into account when trying to infuse training and education with culture when there is so much richness and variation in the Spanish-speaking world. I particularly liked the consideration of teaching "heritage learners," those folks for whom Spanish is the first language and are learning literacy skills while living in the U.S.. This is a thought provoking collection of research reviews. The Art of Teaching Spanish: Second Language Acquisition from Research to Praxis Overview"The Art of Teaching Spanish" explores in-depth the findings of research in second language acquisition (SLA) and other language-related fields and translates those findings into practical pedagogical tools for current - and future - Spanish-language instructors. This volume addresses how theoretical frameworks affect the application of research findings to the teaching of Spanish, how logistical factors affect the way research findings can be applied to teach Spanish, and how findings from Spanish SLA research would be applicable to Spanish second language teaching and represented in Spanish curricula through objectives and goals (as evidenced in pedagogical materials such as textbooks and computer-assisted language learning software). Top SLA researchers and applied linguists lend their expertise on matters such as foreign language across curriculum programs, the effects of study abroad and classroom contexts on learning, testing, online learning, the incorporation of linguistic variation into the classroom, heritage language learners, the teaching of translation, and other pedagogical issues.Other common themes of "The Art of Teaching Spanish" include the rejection of the concept of a monolithic language competence, the importance of language as social practice and cultural competence, the psycholinguistic component of SLA, and the need for more cross-fertilization from related fields.

The Grammar Activity Book: A Resource Book of Grammar Games for Young Students (Cambridge Copy Collection) ReviewThis is really an enjoyable book with a lot of games to review language structures. It contains different versions of well-known games that are adapted to practice grammar, such as bingo, backgammon, rummy, checkers, and other original board and card games that students really enjoy. It contains practice for different levels of students. You can find from the basic tenses like present simple, past simple, frequency adverbs, etc to the most complex structures like reported speech, passive voice, etc. Though not suitable for true beginner students, this book can't be missed if you teach pre-intermediate to advanced students. Games To Spice Up Your World Language Classroom ReviewThe cover deceives you... it looks like my six and nine-year-olds threw it together on the computer and ran it off themselves at Staples... but the contents are what makes the purchase worthwhile. The games are pretty well thought out and easy to use and can be used in any language class. I teach grammar intensive Spanish and it can get dry without something to liven it up. This works very well. A very happy purchase!Games To Spice Up Your World Language Classroom OverviewThis book is full of wonderful games that you can use to get your students speaking in the target language.Whether you teach Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, ESL or anything else, these games will add spice to any World Language class!

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER'S GUIDE TO ACTIVE LEARNING ReviewI am a first year Spanish teacher in an alternative certification program and purchased this book looking for ideas. There is so much in this book that it was overwhelming. There are literally chapters and chapters full of things I have been able to use in my classroom, as well as some useful theoretical information that backs up the more practical suggestions. It doesn't get 5 stars because culture is relegated to a single short chapter and is largely reduced to heros and holidays. There is also not much information about modification for and accomodation of special needs. But, overall, I highly recommend this to new foreign language teachers.FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER'S GUIDE TO ACTIVE LEARNING OverviewThe easy-to-implement activities and strategies in this book will help middle and high school foreign language teachers enhance their students' success. It shows how to create a classroom in which students can actively experience, experiment and discover a foreign language. It applies brain research, multiple intelligences, alternative assessment, technology and other educational innovations to the foreign language classroom.

Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) ReviewUnlike some books on English language teaching, "Approaches and Methods" by Richards and Rodgers is a logically organised, relatively jargon-free and easily grasped book. It is almost certain you will not be diving for the headache tablets after this book.
Covering a large range of the historical and current second language teaching methodologies, the book discusses methods in a logical format that is the same throughout. They discuss three broad areas: Approach, (the theories and ideas underpinning the method), Design, (roles, materials and so on), and Procedure, (what happens in the classroom). This makes each chapter exceptionally well-organised.
The book covers a lot of different methods, including those that are less in favour these days, as well as some that are more recent. However, some very recent developments are not included, such as the controversial Dogme of Thornbury and Medding. What *is* in the book includes Suggestopaedia, TPR, NLP, Natural Way, Multiple Intelligences and more. All of them come with a brief discussion on the background that they came from.
This is an incredibly valuable book for a run down on the methodologies that have come and gone, (some still on the way out). It is an excellent resource that serves well as a reference, or something to be read from cover-to-cover. Or both.Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) OverviewThis new edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching. This new edition is an extensive revision of the first edition of this successful text. Like the first edition, it surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching, such as grammar translation, audiolingualism, communicative language teaching, and the natural approach. This edition includes new chapters on topics such as whole language, multiple intelligences, neurolinguistic programming, competency-based language teaching, cooperative language learning, content-based instruction, task-based language teaching, and the Post-Methods Era. Teachers and teachers-in-training will discover that this second edition is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the major and minor teaching methods used around the world.

Activities, Games, and Assessment Strategies for the Foreign Language Classroom ReviewThis is a great resource for foreign language teachers. I have it with me whenever I am planning lessons. The beginning of the book has a section on classroom organization which has some great tips for student and teacher organization. I've used the packet and binder ideas. I also like all the ideas for how to use flashcards and mini-whiteboards.

The next section of the book has ideas to promote and assess oral proficiency. I really like the idea of essential questions for each unit and making role-play cards for the students.
The rest of the book is divided into warm-ups, individual practice activities, pair activites, group activities, games, and some five-minute activities. I use these sections a lot when I am planning my lessons to ensure that I am not doing the same activities all of the time. It is easy to get stuck in a "game" rut where you play the same game over and over. With all of the ideas in this book, I can always be using different games and group/pair activities. My students enjoy doing the different activities and are not bored because I change what I am doing frequently.
I highly recommend this book to all foreign language teachers. Finally, all of those great ideas you get at conferences are all in one book.
Addition to the review 7/16/10
