Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition ReviewThe Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics provides a concise place where the language teacher or language researcher can find definitions of terms they don't remember in their field of specialization. It gives not only lengthy contextualized definitions but also provides references for those who want to look deeper into a topic. The dictionary also provides cross references to other relevant definitions.
The only thing that might be considered in revision is putting the words into categories under specialization as a possible appendix (i.e. sociolinguistics, language testing, psycholinguistics). This might help and entice the reader to look at the dictionary as a learning tool as well as a reference tool. This would provide an additional way to use the dictionary in order to learn specific vocabulary for a specialization under the umbrella of applied linguistics or language teaching.Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition OverviewThis Dictionary is an essential tool for students of applied linguistics, language teaching, TEFL, and introductory courses in general linguistics and explainsthose difficult theoretical terms which students may encounteraccross these fields.

Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom (Oxford Handbooks for Language Teachers Series) Review"Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom" is a book that would have passed my noticed had it not been for some comments made by people who had read it. That said, I have found it to be an excellent starting point for a more in-depth understanding of the way language works in a practical setting.
This book is not divorced from reality, nor does it inhabit the universe of pure theory. It is always and consistently related back to classroom practice, (as it should be with a title such as this). While it delves into the theories and research of various aspects of language learning in English, it regularly steps back into the classroom to explore the implications of those theories in that setting.
The book covers the 4 basic skill groups of listening, writing, reading and speaking. There are chapters on each of them. Also there are sections on vocabulary, course design, and much more. Each section deals with the issues, problems, research done in each and more. There are also extensive excerpts from other material that is currently used in English classrooms.
All of this builds into a book that gives a solid foundation for further knowledge and awareness of what happens when a student struggles with aspects of the English language. The book is a good introduction, also, to the terminology used by researchers and linguists, which is also helpful for those wishing to study more.
This is a great starting point that gives you the tools to explore even further, (they have further reading lists at the end of each chapter). This is a good addition to the library and well worth a read. I got a whole heap out of it.Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom (Oxford Handbooks for Language Teachers Series) OverviewThis comprehensive handbook helps teachers develop insights into issues, problems, and possibilities in English teaching methodology.

Dictation: New Methods, New Possibilities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI teach a intermediate/advanced reading and writing class in an adult English as a Second Language program in Arlington, Virginia, and this book is by far my favorite resource. My students are always asking for dictations, and this book provides stimulating twists on the standard dictation. Each activity is rated as to the difficulty and adaptability level, and most activities are adaptable to different levels. The book provides activities for groups and pair work, which is so important in the adult ESL classroom. The activities really get the students excited, and many get them up and moving around. A favorite is an activity called "Messenger and Scribe" in which one student reads from a prepared text taped to the wall in the hallway, remembers what he or she has read, and returns to the classroom to dictate to the "Scribe" in the pair what the text says. This provides excellent opportunities for self-correction, and different prepared texts can be used for different level students in a multi-level classroom.I highly recommend this book to any teacher who is looking for a new way to present an old favorite. If reading and writing is even a small part of the class that you teach, this book should be on your shelf.Dictation: New Methods, New Possibilities (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewDictation contains a wealth of new techniques to extend the traditional language-learning activity of dictation. The authors present some thought-provoking answers to such apparently simple questions as: Who chooses the text? Who dictates? Who corrects? What and how do they correct? The activities range from traditional focuses on spelling and punctuation problems to exercise that emphasize personal attitudes and opinions of both teachers and students. Dictation provides: activities suitable for a wide range of levels and ages; example texts for many activities, with permission to copy; opportunities for students to create their own texts; a variety of suggested correction techniques; suggestions for using dictation in teacher training.

Dialogue Activities: Exploring Spoken Interaction in the Language Class (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) Reviewexcellent esl book - the only issue is that British English is used for examples so the teacher will have to find his/her own examples using American English.
But there's a great variety of creative ways to teach dialog.Dialogue Activities: Exploring Spoken Interaction in the Language Class (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewUsing dialogues in different contexts, this book provides over 100 practical activities for teachers to adapt for their classrooms. These activities encourage learners to look atthe English language through dialogues and spoken interactionfrom coursebooks, literature and media, as well as authentic conversation extracts. The book explores using dialogue to communicate personal meaning effectively. Ways of Doing: Students Explore their Everyday and Classroom Processes (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) ReviewI found this book, like all of the books in the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers series, very interesting to read. Davis and Rinvolucri always write books that are full of unusual ideas. This book is, too. However, I found it less useful than their other books as a source of things to do in class, because most of the activities in this book are simply too unusual, and will require an exceptionally charismatic teacher to make them work. I teach English in Asia, and I have found that the students here are much less willing to accept new or strange techniques than are European and North American students. To sum up, the book may open up to you a new and fruitful way of designing activities for class, but I don't think that you will be able to use many of the specific activities that they present.Ways of Doing: Students Explore their Everyday and Classroom Processes (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) OverviewWays of Doing helps students discover how they do things, both inside and outside the classroom. Based largely on humanistic principles, it over 100 activities designed to encourage students to think, speak and write in English about areas they may never have discussed in their mother tongue. Ways of Doing is a rich source of stimulating and easy-to-use lesson ideas requiring minimal preparation. The activities, which are suitable for a range of levels and ages, deal with the following areas:- examining the patterns and processes in students' everyday life- exploring both the mother tongue and the foreign language- group dynamics- exploring and exploiting the course book- ways of learning- correction and feedback. There is also a special teacher development section.

Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide ReviewThis is a book on language teaching for language teachers. The book takes the view that language teachers must be responsible for making the ideas in the book real for their own particular contexts. The book starts with self-development as a theme and then moves on to teaching skills. Jerry Gebhard is careful to point out that he is not providing a bag of tricks as each application is backed-up with a sound theoretical perspective. The references in each section are excellent if the busy teacher has some time to read in more depth. Also, each chapter has activities that teachers can explore in order to apply the chapter information to their own particular context. What I especially like is that these activities encourage teachers to talk to other teachers and colleagues. This is where real self-development starts. This book, then, is a welcome user friendly addition to the field of English Language Teaching. If the user is a teacher, you have found the right book!Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide OverviewIn our times, international travel and extended living arrangements abroad have become almost a normal occurrence in the lives of many people, particularly the young and college educated. Many of these people, often with little training, find themselves with the opportunity to teach the English language to foreign students. After a short stint teaching EFL students in a foreign culture, once-confident English -language teachers often realize that some teacher training would have been useful. This readable and creative new book by Jerry Gebhard is a textbook for the untrained ESL/EFL teacher. It is designed for use by self-motivated teachers who seek to maximize their potential as teachers and, in so doing, enhance the learning of their students. This guide stresses the multifaceted nature of teaching the English language to nonnative speakers and is based on the real experiences of teachers. It provides basic information that ESL teachers should know before they start teaching, as well as ideas on how language instructors can guide students in the skills of listening, conversation, reading, and writing.Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language is unique in that it emphasizes self-development as central to being an ESL/EFL teacher. A variety of self-development tasks are included. Each chapter is guided by a set of questions directly relevant to teaching, including advice on teaching problems. An appendix provides addresses, phone numbers and information on professional second/foreign language-teaching organizations, as well as a list of professional journals and publishing houses. The author's practical and self-motivating philosophy is inviting to a wide audience: EFL teachers, teachers of teachers, and those who have found themselves in a position for which their training is incomplete. It is an excellent work for everyday use and will serve as a fine reference tool.

The ELT Grammar Book: A Teacher-Friendly Reference Guide (Alta Teacher Resource Series) ReviewThe ELT Grammar Book is a reference guide for
teachers of English to speakers of other languages.
Readers may recognize the author's name as the
columnist of "Grammatically Speaking" in TESOL
Matters and "The Grammar Guy" in ESL Magazine.
Richard Firsten has taken his grammatical expertise
and produced a reference tool that focuses on topics
both difficult to understand and explain. The style is
casual and relaxed, which is a pleasant deviation
from typical pedantic grammar reference materials.
Though extensive and in-depth (22 chapters
and 8 appendices totaling over 550 pages), the text is
not intended to be exhaustive. Topics were restricted
to include only high frequency areas typically most
troublesome to teachers and L2 learners alike.
Eighteen of the chapters focus on grammar-exclusive
themes that include such topics as adjectives, articles,
modal auxiliaries, passives, prepositions,
subjunctives, verb tenses, and word order. Three
chapters are primarily discourse related.
Autosegmentals are analyzed in chapters 15 and 18;
the former chapter covers word and phrase stress
while the latter focuses on sentence-level intonation.
Chapter 21 is entitled "ELT 'Waifs'" and deals with
relaxed pronunciation, intensifiers, and common
phrases seldom included in instructional texts.
Phrases that add so much to the flow of conversational
English such as "a great deal of" or the frequent use
of the suffix "-ish" (childish, pinkish, late-ish, around
eight-ish) can assist the L2 student in understanding
common discourse. In the final chapter, the author
notes the changing nature of the English language
and predicts upcoming transformations that are likely
to occur.
Each of the 21 instructional chapters
concludes with "Teaching Tips," which supply
instructors with resources that allow students to
flesh out the content material through numerous
activities designed for pairwork and/or small groups.
These activities alone make the text a valuable
resource. Scattered throughout many of the chapters
is an aside called "Troubleshooter." This
informational box interrupts instructional sections
with pertinent explanations in anticipation of
students' questions. Another strength of the text is
the salient feature of the inductive method of
instruction. For example, situations are often
presented in the form of dialogs so that readers can
observe the grammar point contextually. By
highlighting selected portions of the dialog and
through provocative questioning, the writer models
a lesson requiring the reader to elicit a rule or to
figure out why a certain construction is used.
Employing this critical thinking strategy leads to
discovery, and ideally, to student ownership of that
specific grammar point. At a minimum, adding this
method to one's teaching repertoire will supply
diversity to classroom instruction.
Finally, the eight appendices cover a range
of subject matter that includes strategies, games,
pronunciation, spelling, and further elaboration on
previously covered material. For instance, the author
has provided an excellent outline in the second
appendix that uses the mechanical, meaningful/
manipulative, and communication approach in
relaying content material. Examples abound using
cloze procedures, slot substitutions, and incomplete
dialogs.
Many ESL professionals rely upon college
composition reference manuals for consultation.
Often these tools provide ESL-specific material only
in the form of an appendix or sub-section. The
detailed instruction found in The ELT Grammar Book,
however, is designed exclusively with the L2 learner
in mind. Its primary limitation is found in the
authors' intentionally selective subject matter which
may leave instructors searching elsewhere for
particular topics not addressed. Regardless, whether
an instructor's method of infusing grammar is
comprised primarily of explicit discrete-point
instruction or incidentally through a more
communicative approach, the information, activities,
and strategies offered in this text will provide a
handy reference tool for teachers of L2 students in
various levels and contexts.
Tom Bellomo taught EFL in Spain for five years,
ESOL in New York for five years, and has been
teaching EAP coursework in Florida since 1997. He
presently teaches at the English Language Institute,
Daytona Beach CommunityThe ELT Grammar Book: A Teacher-Friendly Reference Guide (Alta Teacher Resource Series) OverviewAt long last English language teachers have what they've been waiting for—a "professional friend" to give a helping hand at all times! A great deal more than a grammar book, this new resource explores areas of the language that teachers have found troublesome to understand, hard to explain, and challenging to demonstrate to students. Its down-to-earth, reader-friendly format gives a fresh, new way of looking at complex material, in turn preparing teachers to communicate better and give more effective examples to students. The 22 chapters explore word order, articles, present, past, and future tenses, the overlooked uses of some and any, modal auxiliaries, prepositions, genitives, compound nouns and adjectives, passives and causatives, direct object companions, two-and three-word verbs, subjunctives, conditional sentences, the role of stress and intonation to convey meaning, and more! You'll find valuable information that you've never seen in other grammar reference books! Each chapter:• encourages readers to observe, think about, and make conclusions about grammar points;• features special Troubleshooter boxes with helpful insights on points that often bring problems to the teaching and learning of English because of language interference or other causes; and• concludes with a section of Teaching Tips to help you create an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment in your classroom with a generous amount of activities and games to teach or reinforce the discrete points covered in the chapter. When your mind goes blank and you're trying to remember exactly what native speakers of English say or why they say this or why they don't say that . . . The ELT Grammar Book comes to the rescue! It's a professional friend that you'll consult often over the entire course of your career.

Most of the games are really fun, and students enjoy them a lot. They are often broad enough to allow the creative side of the students to come out.
Some of the acitivities have a lot of cutting out, but one way around it is copy onto card and just keep the copies when possible. For example, some of the games need lots of pictures cut out. These can be copied onto coloured paper or card and kept after the lesson. This way, you can re-use them again, with no such problems.
One flaw with the book is the cover of it. It is very flimsy, and will soon be creased and possibly torn. It has happened to a couple of copies of the book that I have used, due to the heavy use of the book by the teachers. You may want to strength the front and rear covers with some heavy duty self-adhesive covering plastic.
Other than that, it is a great book with lots of different activities to use. It is a regular feature in my own teaching, and I have a drawer or two full of pre-copied activities.Advanced Communication Games: A Collection of Games and Activities for Intermediate and Advanced Students of English (Teachers Resource Materials) Overview*The language syllabus follows the communicative abilities of the students *Suitable for use with any course *Teacher's notes show you how to play each game *Photocopiable rules sheets guide the students

Games To Spice Up Your World Language Classroom ReviewThe cover deceives you... it looks like my six and nine-year-olds threw it together on the computer and ran it off themselves at Staples... but the contents are what makes the purchase worthwhile. The games are pretty well thought out and easy to use and can be used in any language class. I teach grammar intensive Spanish and it can get dry without something to liven it up. This works very well. A very happy purchase!Games To Spice Up Your World Language Classroom OverviewThis book is full of wonderful games that you can use to get your students speaking in the target language.Whether you teach Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, ESL or anything else, these games will add spice to any World Language class!
