Comprehension Strategies for English Language Learners: 30 Research-Based Reading Strategies That Help Students Read, Understand, and Really Learn ... Nonfiction Materials (Teaching Strategies) ReviewThis text is a good addition to an individual teacher's bag of tricks or a school's professional library. Margaret Bouchard has taken many well-known reading, writing, and thinking strategies (and has cited her sources), adapted the strategies especially for use with English Language learners, explained the theory behind their use, and where appropriate, has provided a worksheet to copy. Although most of these strategies can be used with ELLs at any age, the worksheets themselves are appropriate only for younger children, although they could easily be readapted for older students. The main advantage of this text is that although most of these strategies are well-known, having them in one place and having them validated as useful for ELLS is a significant help to teachers who have no ESL or Bilingual help in their school or district. The strategies are not a panacea, however, and some require considerable text or curriculum adaption by the classroom teacher. But -- this should be a realistic expectation of teachers with ELLs in their classrooms. Although the learning theory on which the strategies are based is briefly explained, teachers at the secondary level who are not as familiar with reading theory might not find the backgrounding adequate and might come to feel that these strategies could not make a sufficient dent in the enormous amount of material taught at the high school level.Comprehension Strategies for English Language Learners: 30 Research-Based Reading Strategies That Help Students Read, Understand, and Really Learn ... Nonfiction Materials (Teaching Strategies) OverviewWith this collection of research-based-and practical-strategies, mainstream classroom teachers can help ease the academic challenges English language learners often face by harnessing the opportunities provided by learning language in a meaningful context. Each strategy lesson identifies the level for which it is best suited and the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Goals and Standards it meets, as well as key supporting research, questions to prompt reflection, and more. For use with Grades 4 & Up.

12 American Voices: An Authentic Listening and Integrated-Skills Text ReviewWhat a wonderful collection of stories. These "12 American Voices" will captivate both you and your students... the tales on the accompanying CD are so engaging that I found myself listening to them in my car - for pleasure! The activities that surround each story are interesting, relevant and expertly designed to immerse students in the topic at hand. My students LOVED the book, and are only disappointed by the fact that they have finished it - they want MORE! I highly recommend this book for teachers and learners of English of practically all ages!12 American Voices: An Authentic Listening and Integrated-Skills Text OverviewDesigned for non-native speakers of English, Twelve American Voices presents a series of entertaining and culturally rich radio documentaries by award-winning producer David Isay. These stories, which were first broadcast on National Public Radio, focus on a range of individuals living and working in contemporary America, from an immigrant Chinese restaurant owner in New York City to an African-American waitress in the South, from the owner of a wedding chapel to a retired couple who have become disc jockeys. As students listen to these stories, they hear a variety of regional and ethnic 'Englishes' and are introduced to some corners of American culture that are rarely seen in the media. In addition to transcripts of the documentaries, the book includes thought-provoking exercises that encourage students to analyse the language in the stories and to respond in both oral and written form. A CD of the broadcasts in included. Also available are an instructor's manual and a cassette for language labs (both free).

Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide ReviewThis is a book on language teaching for language teachers. The book takes the view that language teachers must be responsible for making the ideas in the book real for their own particular contexts. The book starts with self-development as a theme and then moves on to teaching skills. Jerry Gebhard is careful to point out that he is not providing a bag of tricks as each application is backed-up with a sound theoretical perspective. The references in each section are excellent if the busy teacher has some time to read in more depth. Also, each chapter has activities that teachers can explore in order to apply the chapter information to their own particular context. What I especially like is that these activities encourage teachers to talk to other teachers and colleagues. This is where real self-development starts. This book, then, is a welcome user friendly addition to the field of English Language Teaching. If the user is a teacher, you have found the right book!Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide OverviewIn our times, international travel and extended living arrangements abroad have become almost a normal occurrence in the lives of many people, particularly the young and college educated. Many of these people, often with little training, find themselves with the opportunity to teach the English language to foreign students. After a short stint teaching EFL students in a foreign culture, once-confident English -language teachers often realize that some teacher training would have been useful. This readable and creative new book by Jerry Gebhard is a textbook for the untrained ESL/EFL teacher. It is designed for use by self-motivated teachers who seek to maximize their potential as teachers and, in so doing, enhance the learning of their students. This guide stresses the multifaceted nature of teaching the English language to nonnative speakers and is based on the real experiences of teachers. It provides basic information that ESL teachers should know before they start teaching, as well as ideas on how language instructors can guide students in the skills of listening, conversation, reading, and writing.Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language is unique in that it emphasizes self-development as central to being an ESL/EFL teacher. A variety of self-development tasks are included. Each chapter is guided by a set of questions directly relevant to teaching, including advice on teaching problems. An appendix provides addresses, phone numbers and information on professional second/foreign language-teaching organizations, as well as a list of professional journals and publishing houses. The author's practical and self-motivating philosophy is inviting to a wide audience: EFL teachers, teachers of teachers, and those who have found themselves in a position for which their training is incomplete. It is an excellent work for everyday use and will serve as a fine reference tool.

Focus on Grammar 3: An Integrated Skills Approach Teacher's Manual with Teacher Resource CD-ROM (Third Edition) ReviewThis book was very helpful as I was tutoring an ESL student whose college uses this text series. It took a while to get used to using the book because of its organization and the fact that it does not contain the actual student version. I found that I needed a copy of the student version and sometimes had to go back and forth between the student and teacher manual to best present and review the material with my student. I also felt that the comprehension piece was a bit weak. However, my student passed out of her grammar course based on our work in the student text. So, overall, I was pleased with his success using FOCUS ON GRAMMAR 3.Focus on Grammar 3: An Integrated Skills Approach Teacher's Manual with Teacher Resource CD-ROM (Third Edition) OverviewThe Teacher's Manual contains a variety of suggestions and information to enrich the material in the Student Book. It includes general teaching suggestions for each section of a typical unit, answers to frequently asked questions, unit-by-unit teaching tips with ideas for further communicative practice, and a supplementary listening activity section. Answers to the Student Book exercises and audioscripts of the listening activities are found at the back of the Teacher's Manual. Also included in the Teacher's Manual is a CD-ROM that includes PowerPoint presentations that offer alternative ways of presenting selected grammar structures. Focus on Grammar helps students understand and practice English grammar through contextualized listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Focus on Grammar combines controlled and communicative practice with critical thinking skills and ongoing assessment.

Reading, Writing, & Learning in Esl: A Resource Book for K-8 Teachers ReviewThe book was easy to read, and was a practical guide that I used in teaching licensed teachers working to obtain a Bilingual/ESL State Endorsement. The teachers appreciated the way the book allowed them to choose topics of interest to their particular classroom. The vignettes about students and teachers were useful as examples so teachers could apply the methods and strategies to their own teaching situations. The review of language acquisition was helpful for teachers to understand the process in a practical way. Most of the teachers do not have linguistic degrees nor did they feel they needed extensive information to work in their classes but they did use the material about first and second language acquisition theories as they applied to real life teaching situations. As our district works with Native American students, the material on the role was culture was helfpul as most of the students are English speakers but have a cultural influence. The section of using multiple measures for assessment was useful but could contain more information.Reading, Writing, & Learning in Esl: A Resource Book for K-8 Teachers Overview

Fun with Grammar: Communicative Activities for the Azar Grammar Series, Teacher's Resource Book ReviewThis book is well organized according to the grammar point being taught, so it is easy to find a bunch of activities for what you're trying to teach. I actually "taught" a class using basically this book (Grammar Through Speaking and Listening). Most of the games are usable and easy to understand with copyable handouts. It is well worth the price.
And in case you didn't know, you can find this entire book of games and activites (and other class-activity materials) on the website AzarGrammar.com! But nothing beats having the real thing :-)Fun with Grammar: Communicative Activities for the Azar Grammar Series, Teacher's Resource Book OverviewFun with Grammar is an exciting teacher's resource book that adds a whole new dimension of fun to grammar classes! More than 200 communicative, interactive, task-based games, can be used in the classroom to make learning grammar fun. These activity ideas -- contributed by grammar and ESL teachers -- are all classroom-tested, student approved, and complete with step-by-step instructions. All activities are keyed to the three levels of the Azar Grammar Series, by Better Schrampfer Azar -- Red for Beginning, Black for Intermediate, Blue for Advanced -- and have time allocations so teachers can choose those that fit their class needs.

English Language Learners Day by Day, K-6: A Complete Guide to Literacy, Content-Area, and Language Instruction ReviewThank goodness for this resource! The book is a practical guide for ESL teachers, as well as all teachers, who have wondered for years how to teach the student who is a new English language learner. Celic combines all the research-based, best practices that immerse new English learners in language, vocabulary, background knowledge and make them strategic learners. I especially love the chapter on developing academic language. So many ELL students develop social language and sound like they should be good students, but have not developed the academic language they need to be those successful learners. ESL teachers can take this resource and use it immediately. However, it's a resource that all teachers can use. The strategies are simply good teaching and apply as much to all students as to the ELL student. A great find!!! maryland teacherEnglish Language Learners Day by Day, K-6: A Complete Guide to Literacy, Content-Area, and Language Instruction OverviewChristina Celic s foundational guide provides an authentic and meaningful answer to the question, How can I teach the grade-level curriculum in a way that makes my English language learners successful? Picture This A Beginning ESL Teacher's Resource Book ReviewI highly recommend the Picture This ESL Resource book. I've used the materials to teach all levels and types of ESL, including high school Bilingual Special Ed and ESL for adult Latino baseball players. The pictures are cartoons, but not babyish, so they are suitable for all ages. The materials can be used as the core of a complete ESL curriculum, or unit by unit, to supplement as needed. I wish I had had them when I taught 7th grade Language Arts--they are truly a great resource for vocabulary building and spelling! This product is easy to use and fits well into any lesson plan. Well worth the money because you can literally use it all year.Picture This A Beginning ESL Teacher's Resource Book OverviewThe Picture This! A Beginning ESL Teacher's Resource Book is designed to introduce non-English speakers living in the United States to the vocabulary commonly encountered in this country. Purchasers of this book are entitled to reproduce all activities as many times as they like, thus making it a one-time investment for years' worth of teaching. The Picture This! A Beginning ESL Teacher's Resource Book is a visual resource book intended for use in a beginning-level ESL classroom. It provides a strong curricular framework for teachers of junior high, high school, and adult English Language Learners. The idea of using pictures to assist in learning a language other than English comes from the old cliché: "A picture is worth a thousand words." Rather than translating a word verbally -- a practice which risks a lack of comprehension and information overload in early language learners -- instructors can use pictures to build a strong foundational vocabulary. Because it contains 30 different vocabulary units, placed in an optimal developmental order, Picture This! relieves the stress of teachers by helping them know what they will be teaching each week of the year. In addition, the uniformity, predictability, and appropriate reading level of the materials promote great success in beginning English learners who are often confused by the incomprehensible materials used in content classes. The Picture This! A Beginning ESL Teacher's Resource Book contains 30 different language-building units, each featuring a reproducible 10-25 minute activity for every day of the week: a vocabulary word list, vocabulary pictures (32 new words per unit), two quizzes, a crossword puzzle, a word search puzzle, oral dictation sentences and test, and a helpful spelling test form. This new edition of Picture This! A Beginning ESL Teacher's Resource Book also features a BONUS collection of 26 A-Z activities that supplement the vocabulary units and make learning new words fun! These creative "plug-ins" help extend the vocabulary development beyond the mere memorization of words.

What English Language Teachers Need to Know Volume I: Understanding Learning (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series) ReviewThis book is quite useful for a teacher new to the ESL/EFL field who might feel underprepared pedagogically. It is also a good review for a new teacher to see if he/she has adequate foundational knowledge. The book mainly has strengths with very few weaknesses.
I have not seen Vol. II yet, but I think it would be worth it because it deals with the application of the concepts in Vol. I. Together they would cover a lot of breadth on the subject with a reasonable amount of depth. What English Language Teachers Need to Know Volume I: Understanding Learning (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series) OverviewDesigned for pre-service teachers and teachers new to the field of ELT,Volume Iand its companion textbook, Volume II,are organized around the key question: What do teachers need to know and be able to do in order for their students to learn English? All English language teachers need to understand the nature of language and language learning, and with that understanding they need to be able to facilitate student learning.Volume I, on understanding learning, provides the background information that teachers need to know and be able to use in their classroom:the characteristics of the context in which they workhow English works and how it is learned their role in the larger professional sphere of English language education Volume II, on facilitating learning, covers the three main facets of teaching: planninginstructingassessing. The focus throughout is on outcomes, that is, student learning. The texts work for teachers across different contexts (countries where English is the dominant language, one of the official languages, or taught as a foreign language); different levels (elementary/primary, secondary, college or university, or adult education), and different learning purposes (general English, workplace English, English for academic purposes, or English for specific purposes).

American Headway Starter: Teacher's Resource Book ReviewI have used this series of books myself, and they are very good. Well thought-out and highly recommended. I would just point out that this "starter" book is not really for absolute beginners, at least in Thailand, Russia, or any other country using a non-Latin alphabet. Students need to learn their ABC's and master elementary reading before trying this book, and that can take weeks or months of practice.American Headway Starter: Teacher's Resource Book OverviewA foundation course in basic American English for absolute beginners.

Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL: A Resource Book for Teaching K-12 English Learners (with MyEducationLab) (5th Edition) ReviewPeregoy and Boyle have written an outstanding resource book for elementary and secondary school teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs). This book focuses on the literacy development for ELL students which is so critical to their success in education and in life. The book includes relevant research information pertaining to second language aquisition, literacy development, and cultural issues. Theory is transformed into practice with solid guidance for teachers working with ELLs in process writing, literature study, and content area studies. Background information, scaffolding techniques, in-depth teacheing strategies, and activity examples are seamlessly merged into a tremendously helpful resource guide which enables teachers to truly employ "best practices" in classrooms with ELLs. I first used this book while obtaining a Master's degree in education, and as a classroom teacher, have found it to be an invaluable resource. It is well worth the (relatively small) monetary and time investment for any teacher who cares about offering ELL students the bast instruction possible.Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL: A Resource Book for Teaching K-12 English Learners (with MyEducationLab) (5th Edition) OverviewPraised for its strong research base, engaging style, and inclusion of specific teaching ideas, the Fifth Edition comprehensively examines oral language, vocabulary, writing, reading, and writing/content-based instruction in English for grades K-12 students. This Fifth Edition of Peregoy & Boyle's best-selling book continues the strengths of the Fourth Edition with its comprehensiveness and accessibility, providing a wealth of practical strategies for promoting literacy and language development in ELLs (K-12). Unlike many books in this field, Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL takes a unique approach by exploring contemporary language acquisition theory (as it relates to instruction) and providing suggestions and methods for motivating ELLs' English language, literacy and content area learning. The book highlights content-based instruction and features differentiated instruction for English language learners.

English Language Learners in American Classrooms: 101 Questions, 101 Answers ReviewI am very grateful for this new book on the topic of English language learners (ELLs). As a veteran teacher of 34 years, having taught grades kinder through eighth, I know first hand about the opportunities and challenges in educating ELLs. Through the years, I have experienced what works and what does not, as hundreds of ELLs in my classroom have shown me. It is indeed affirming to find much of what I have learned from my students in this book.
In English Learners in the American Classroom, James Crawford and Stephen Krashen describe what works and what does not and give the reasons in a clear and concise manner. They pose the many frequently asked questions about instruction and assessment for ELLs and give precise answers with information, research, and history. This is very important for there is no other educational issue that creates more heated debate than the education of and program options for ELLs.
The education of English learners has been a concern since this country's inception in the 1700s. Because our society has always been a nation of immigrants, it is pluralistic with many other languages than English. However, those who attempt to perpetuate myths of the dangers of a pluralistic, multilingual society compound the challenge of the education of immigrant children with simplistic, expedient solutions. This issue is further complicated for teachers by questions regarding the educational goal for ELLs. Is the goal to focus on academic content or on English learning? Can it be both, academic content while learning English? In essence, most educators get entangled in these debates while desiring an unrealistic expedient process in the midst of ever more local, state, and federal mandates, and new curriculum and assessment programs.
In such an environment, Crawford and Kreshen's new book is a welcome assistance to teachers of ELLs. I can envision that it will give them clear answers to the how and why of effective instructional methods and assessment. Teachers will also feel empowered with answers ready at hand as they work towards providing the best education that ELLs can have.
I know that in my last years of teaching, as I prepare to retire, I will use this book as a guide for the continued improvement of my classroom practice and my advocacy for English language learners.English Language Learners in American Classrooms: 101 Questions, 101 Answers OverviewWith increasing numbers of ELLs posing unique challenges and opportunities for schools, the authors address educators' concerns in a concise and accessible way. The book provides a basic but comprehensive introduction that serves as a state-of-the-art guide to the field, using a straightforward Q&A format designed to focus sharply on the major issues, such as the research on effectiveness of various programs, and assessment and accountability for ELLs. For use with Grades K–12.
