Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (Theory and Practice) ReviewEach year teachers are amazed at how little their students know about grammar, usage, and correctness. "Why don't you know this?" they ask their students. "Didn't your teacher TEACH you this last year?" Blank expressions on their faces, the kids shake their heads "no," but a visit to last year's teacher brings indignation. "I certainly DID teach them (fill in the blank with your favorite grammar term)!" she says testily -- or quizzically, depending on her mood.
Sound familiar? It does to me, which is why I bought GETTING IT RIGHT. After years of frustration with "Teflon Grammatical Memory Syndrome" and with correcting a gazillion errors on a gajillion student papers, I looked to two familiar names -- Michael Smith and Jeffrey Wilhelm -- for answers. I wasn't disappointed.
Smith and Wilhelm start with conclusive research that the teaching of grammar in isolation does not work. Then they roll up their sleeves to show us what DOES work. Essentially they argue that it is a depth vs. breadth issue when it comes to grammar. Rather than trying to teach everything, teachers should focus on what's important and most likely to benefit the students in the long run. Their two justifications for teaching a term? "1. The term is so commonly used that teachers, texts, and tests presume that students know it. 2. The term is essential to being able to explain an important issue of style or correctness."
Boiling the vast world of grammar minutiae down to 16 basic terms/concepts, Smith and Wilhelm demonstrate creative ways to teach them based on their own experiences as well as those of student teachers who have worked under their tutelage. The practical ideas will be invaluable to teachers looking for new methods of reaching their kids in this most challenging of tasks. Prompts and handout examples are provided, along with samples of typical student errors and ways to help students learn from them.
Teachers will especially appreciate the section called "A Model Sequence: Learning to Proofread." Here the authors have mercy by telling teachers to free themselves of their shackles. Circling every error on every paper is NOT productive (unless improving your own editing skills while your kids learn nothing counts as "productive"). Instead, teachers should model proofreading and provide practice on carefully selected concepts, then serve as mentors by teaching specific skills and having students serve as their own editors by focusing on errors related to those skills only. Also, peer proofreading ideas that work are spelled out -- one in particular that involves creative use of the TV series CSI. Here it means "Correct Sentence Investigators" -- and yes, the proofreaders are "agents" and the errors are the "crime" (meaning you're about to witness the unlikely marriage of "fun" and "editing").
Buy it. Read it. Use it. Most importantly, it will help your students become better writers and self-editors; less importantly (but still worthy of your consideration!) YOU will feel a little more sane and a lot more effective when you send your kids off to the next grade where they might just surprise their new teacher by saying, "Participles? Yeah, we actually DID learn how to use THEM last year!"
Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (Theory and Practice) OverviewThe authors consider what grammatical concepts and correctness issues are most worth teaching andhow to teach those concepts and issues deeply. They explain how to understand the causes of students' errors, how to address those causes through authentic and engaging activities, and how teachers can work together to increase their effectiveness. They provide both guiding principles and plenty of examples that readers will be able to employ immediately For use with Grades 4 & Up.

3rd Grade Writing Practice (Practice (Scholastic)) ReviewMy son is going into 3rd grade. This summer he's been working on math, grammar/writing. This is his favorite non-math workbook. The directions are clear and instructive - he doesn't need me to help him understand what he needs to do. The sentence expanding and paragraph building exercises aren't as exhausting for him as those in other writing workbooks.3rd Grade Writing Practice (Practice (Scholastic)) OverviewGive students the skill-building practice they need in reading, writing, math, and more with these engaging , full-color workbooks. Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition ReviewThe Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics provides a concise place where the language teacher or language researcher can find definitions of terms they don't remember in their field of specialization. It gives not only lengthy contextualized definitions but also provides references for those who want to look deeper into a topic. The dictionary also provides cross references to other relevant definitions.
The only thing that might be considered in revision is putting the words into categories under specialization as a possible appendix (i.e. sociolinguistics, language testing, psycholinguistics). This might help and entice the reader to look at the dictionary as a learning tool as well as a reference tool. This would provide an additional way to use the dictionary in order to learn specific vocabulary for a specialization under the umbrella of applied linguistics or language teaching.Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, Third Edition OverviewThis Dictionary is an essential tool for students of applied linguistics, language teaching, TEFL, and introductory courses in general linguistics and explainsthose difficult theoretical terms which students may encounteraccross these fields.

Using Russian: A Guide to Contemporary Usage ReviewThis book is simply unbelievable in its scope and detail. It even surpasses Terrence Wade's "A Comprehensive Russian Grammar". Derek Offord starts out with an examination of the major levels of speech, i.e. register 1 (colloquial or common speech), register 2 (the polite speech of an educated person which is not formal), and register 3 (the advanced formal speech, such as scientific, official business, and publicistic speech). He also mentions a sub-level of speech which does not fall into the appropriate speech of the above registers, but includes slang and vulgar speech. He not only analyzes these levels of speech, but gives detailed examples of each. And that's just chapter one!
Chapter two deals with problems in meaning, such as homophones, homonyms, and words found only in the plural or only in the singular.
Chapter three deals with words that are hard to translate from English to Russian.
Chapter four deals with special vocabulary and idioms, including interjections and vulgar speech.
Chapter five delves into extrememly useful ways to use Russian for measurement, currency, fractions, time, telephone numbers, postal addresses, family relationships, public notices, abbreviations, acronyms, names of countries and nationalities, and names denoting inhabitants of Russian cities and towns.
Chapter six examines verbal etiquette in depth.
Chapter seven goes into word formation with all its variations, such as suffix and prefix, and augmentatives versus diminutives.
Chapter eight looks at inflection, chapter nine examines prepositions, and chapter ten goes deep into syntax for all the cases.
I agree with the previous reviewer who said that the word "awesome" would be an understatement to describe this book. This book is truly the key to mastery, well worth the money to buy it and the time to study it.Using Russian: A Guide to Contemporary Usage OverviewUsing Russian is a guide to Russian usage for those who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge. Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers, and focuses on questions of style and register which are all too often ignored. Clear, readable and easy to consult, it will prove invaluable to students seeking to improve their fluency and confidence in Russian. This second edition has been substantially revised and expanded to incorporate fresh material and up-to-date information. Many of the original chapters have been rewritten and one brand new chapter has been added, providing a clear picture of Russian usage in the 21st century.

Lonely Planet Ukrainian Phrasebook ReviewThis little book is terrific for anyone interested in the Ukrainian language. It has very good explanations of the alphabet and grammatical rules of Ukrainian. It also teaches MANY useful phrases and words for the traveler, and it gives phonetic pronunciations of every word and phrase (as well as the actual Cyrillic spelling).
I have a close friend in Ukraine who has told me that my pronunciation of the Ukrainian words (as they appear in this book) are perfect.
However, be certain of your purpose for using this book. If you want to learn to speak the Ukrainian language somewhat fluently, it will take a lot more than this book (but this book is an excellent starting point).
If you are simply planning to travel to one of the major Ukrainian cities (Kiev, Odessa, etc.) in the near future, you would probably be better off with the Russian version of this book instead of Ukrainian. Everybody in the major cities still speaks Russian as their primary language. Most of them understand Ukrainian, but Russian is still the first language for most people. I understand that this is slowly changing (universities, etc. are changing EVERYTHING over to Ukrainian). And if you plan to visit a small town in Ukraine, many of them speak ONLY Ukrainian. My suggestion is to get both the Ukrainian and the Russian versions, so you will be able to communicate clearly no matter where you are.Lonely Planet Ukrainian Phrasebook OverviewPacked with phrases on everything from bargaining at a rynok to hiking and eating out, this book will spice up your Ukrainian adventure. Whether bathing in culture or the Black Sea, speak the language and make your experiences unique. Our phrasebooks give you a comprehensive mix of practical and social words and phrases in more than 120 languages. Chat with the locals and discover their culture - a guaranteed way to enrich your travel experience.

Georgian: A Reading Grammar ReviewThis course assumes considerable familiarity with linguistic and grammatical terminology, which makes it concise but challenging for someone who is new to learning foreign languages. The chapters are large and present a lot of information at one time, and the vocabularies for each chapter are extensive (two or three pages of new words per chapter). Starting in the fifth chapter, there are unedited reading samples from original Georgian sources, some of which make for interesting reading. No familiarity with the Georgian alphabet is assumed, so the book begins by introducing the alphabet letter-by-letter, with a description of the sound and (very helpfully) a stroke-by-stroke depiction of how to write it. There is a Georgian-English glossary (which is very complete--you will find every word used in the text without recourse to a dictionary) but no English-Georgian. There are lots of exercises to work (each chapter offers about forty sentences or paragraphs) and there is a key for all the exercises. The grammar is well organized, and has a very progressive, linear feel to it. The typesetting is good and the Georgian script is quite legible except in the reading excerpts, some of which are difficult to make out at times. The pictures and illustrations are not clear at all, and don't add much. The recordings are not impressive either. There is only one voice, and she reads all the exercises and readings. There's lots of material to hear, but the recording quality is bad; the levels are low and you can hear extraneous noises at times (page turns, other voices). If you're interested in Georgian and willing to work, this is an important reference to have. But for the casual learner or someone who wants to learn conversational skills, I can't advise it. Conversational phrases are relegated to a two-page appendix and there is very little dialogue in the rest of the book.Georgian: A Reading Grammar OverviewThis course is specially designed to teach how to read Georgian literature. It is intended for beginners, and starts by teaching the unique Georgian alphabet and basic pronunciation. The reading and translation passages have been selected from both classical and modern Georgian publications, and are recorded as well on the CDs. Reissued in 2005 on 4 audio CDs (3-1/2 hours of recording), accompanied by a 528-p. textbook. Product No. SGG150D.

Shona-English/English-Shona Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) ReviewUntil this book was published there was no decent introductory guide to learning Shona available outside Zimbabwe. I run a website teaching basic Shona ( www.shonalanguage.fsnet.co.uk ) and used to get large numbers of requests for such a book - now here it is!
For a very reasonable price, it provides: - pronunciation guide; - introduction to grammar; - basic but adequate vocabulary; - sections on various everyday tasks, each with a useful set of words and phrases;
If you are planning to visit Zimbabwe and are at all interested in learning Shona you should definitely buy this book.
My only slight criticism is that the Grammar section is quite dense, you may need to be familiar with some grammatical terms. On the other hand it is /much/ more accessible than earlier Shona grammar books available outside Zimbabwe.
Overall, a great buy.Shona-English/English-Shona Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) OverviewShona, or ChiShona, a Bantu language spoken by eight million people in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, is the official and most widely-spoken language of Zimbabwe. Cohesion in English (English Language Series) ReviewHalliday and Hasan's "Cohesion in English" is in no way a light read to fill in lazy Sunday afternoons. This is one of the heaviest books I have read, and I have not used a dictionary so much since I last read Umberto Eco.
If you are into cohesion, and English, this is still a seminal text, despite the three decades that have passed since its publishing. It is a thorough book that covers topics such as lexical cohesion, ellipsis, substitution, referencing, and a whole host more. For cohesion, it is a hard book to surpass.
As mentioned by others, it is a book heavy on the vocabulary, and there were times when I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. "Hypotactic" and "paratactic" remain some of my favourites that I will probably never use again.
"Cohesion in English" is probably not the best place to start, but it is a good book. For those looking for more detail on the material, this is a good addition to beef up your knowledge and get that knowledge to the next level. This is definitely not something you want to start reading if you are new to the field, or even thinking about it.Cohesion in English (English Language Series) OverviewCohesion in English is concerned with a relatively neglected part of the linguistic system: its resources for text construction, the range of meanings that are speciffically associated with relating what is being spoken or written to its semantic environment. A principal component of these resources is 'cohesion'. This book studies the cohesion that arises from semantic relations between sentences. Reference from one to the other, repetition of word meanings, the conjunctive force of but, so, then and the like are considered. Further, it describes a method for analysing and coding sentences, which is applied to specimen texts.

240 Vocabulary Words 3rd Grade Kids Need To Know: 24 Ready-to-Reproduce Packets That Make Vocabulary Building Fun & Effective ReviewVocabulary is the corner stone of good reading and writing. Many smart kids cannot raise their reading level because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved over a short period. Young kids need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It organizes essential third grade words in 24 lessons, and teaches them with activities and drills. Its well-designed questions help to clarify the related words that kids often misuse otherwise. The word selection is thoughtful and suitable for 3rd grade level. My child used it for learning as well as for assessment. He finished it in 2 months.
For further word practice, I found Beestar weekly ELA program has more such drills (a nice web site at http://www.beestar.org). My child's vocabulary is improved effectively with these word lessons. His reading and writing level is rising at the same time. A solid book!

Functional English Grammar: An Introduction for Second Language Teachers (Cambridge Language Education) ReviewStraight up, I really like this book. I have seen a few functional grammar books, or books that have "leaned" in that direction, and they have either been very close to Murphy-esque stuff or have been very complex, like Halliday's formidable tome. Lock seems to have found a balance of function and understandable content.
The book is logically organised and represents good chunks of information arranged according to various functions. Noun groups, ("representing things"), various verbs, complex sentences, speech acts and a whole tonne more are there. Each chapter has a decent amount of detail, lots of examples illustrating the point and giving everything a good overall coverage. The bottom line is that there is virtually no strain on the reader in getting their head around it all. Lock is very succinct and wastes no paper or words.
All in all, Graham Lock's "Functional Grammar" is a great resource for teachers, and one that should be counted on the bookselves of anyone wanting a good functional explanation of grammatical aspects of English. As mentioned, I REALLY like this book and found it very useful.
Functional English Grammar: An Introduction for Second Language Teachers (Cambridge Language Education) OverviewThis text explores ways in which English grammar enables speakers and writers to represent the world, to interact with one another, and to create coherent messages. This book provides second language teachers with a functional description of English grammar, in which grammar is viewed as a communicative resource. Each chapter includes a focus on areas of difficulty for second language learners, numerous authentic examples, tasks that allow the reader to apply the concepts introduced, and discussion questions. A final chapter covers issues in the learning and teaching of grammar, and reviews methodological options for the second or foreign language classroom. Assuming no previous study of linguistics or English grammar, this book is suitable for self-study or as a textbook in teacher education programs.

Fun with Grammar: 75 Quick Activities & Games that Help kids Learn About Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs & More ReviewI have many grammar activity books, but this is definitely the best! Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide ReviewThis is a book on language teaching for language teachers. The book takes the view that language teachers must be responsible for making the ideas in the book real for their own particular contexts. The book starts with self-development as a theme and then moves on to teaching skills. Jerry Gebhard is careful to point out that he is not providing a bag of tricks as each application is backed-up with a sound theoretical perspective. The references in each section are excellent if the busy teacher has some time to read in more depth. Also, each chapter has activities that teachers can explore in order to apply the chapter information to their own particular context. What I especially like is that these activities encourage teachers to talk to other teachers and colleagues. This is where real self-development starts. This book, then, is a welcome user friendly addition to the field of English Language Teaching. If the user is a teacher, you have found the right book!Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide OverviewIn our times, international travel and extended living arrangements abroad have become almost a normal occurrence in the lives of many people, particularly the young and college educated. Many of these people, often with little training, find themselves with the opportunity to teach the English language to foreign students. After a short stint teaching EFL students in a foreign culture, once-confident English -language teachers often realize that some teacher training would have been useful. This readable and creative new book by Jerry Gebhard is a textbook for the untrained ESL/EFL teacher. It is designed for use by self-motivated teachers who seek to maximize their potential as teachers and, in so doing, enhance the learning of their students. This guide stresses the multifaceted nature of teaching the English language to nonnative speakers and is based on the real experiences of teachers. It provides basic information that ESL teachers should know before they start teaching, as well as ideas on how language instructors can guide students in the skills of listening, conversation, reading, and writing.Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language is unique in that it emphasizes self-development as central to being an ESL/EFL teacher. A variety of self-development tasks are included. Each chapter is guided by a set of questions directly relevant to teaching, including advice on teaching problems. An appendix provides addresses, phone numbers and information on professional second/foreign language-teaching organizations, as well as a list of professional journals and publishing houses. The author's practical and self-motivating philosophy is inviting to a wide audience: EFL teachers, teachers of teachers, and those who have found themselves in a position for which their training is incomplete. It is an excellent work for everyday use and will serve as a fine reference tool.

Your Own Words: The Bestselling Author of Word Court Explains How to Decipher Decipher the Dictionary, Master the Usage Manual, and Be Your Own Language Expert ReviewFor a serious writer or editor, this is an essential book. I keep it close by my dictionary, thesaurus, Chicago Manual, Garner, and Fowler's (the 2nd edition, of course, not the awful 3rd). Your Own Words is, as another reviewer aptly noted, a meta-reference, the one that allows me to find my way around the others and answer grammar and usage questions for myself. (I never, for instance, would have thought of using Google News as a usage guide.) The many selections from Wallraff's Atlantic Monthly column are a welcome bonus.Your Own Words: The Bestselling Author of Word Court Explains How to Decipher Decipher the Dictionary, Master the Usage Manual, and Be Your Own Language Expert Overview

Focus on Grammar 3: An Integrated Skills Approach Teacher's Manual with Teacher Resource CD-ROM (Third Edition) ReviewThis book was very helpful as I was tutoring an ESL student whose college uses this text series. It took a while to get used to using the book because of its organization and the fact that it does not contain the actual student version. I found that I needed a copy of the student version and sometimes had to go back and forth between the student and teacher manual to best present and review the material with my student. I also felt that the comprehension piece was a bit weak. However, my student passed out of her grammar course based on our work in the student text. So, overall, I was pleased with his success using FOCUS ON GRAMMAR 3.Focus on Grammar 3: An Integrated Skills Approach Teacher's Manual with Teacher Resource CD-ROM (Third Edition) OverviewThe Teacher's Manual contains a variety of suggestions and information to enrich the material in the Student Book. It includes general teaching suggestions for each section of a typical unit, answers to frequently asked questions, unit-by-unit teaching tips with ideas for further communicative practice, and a supplementary listening activity section. Answers to the Student Book exercises and audioscripts of the listening activities are found at the back of the Teacher's Manual. Also included in the Teacher's Manual is a CD-ROM that includes PowerPoint presentations that offer alternative ways of presenting selected grammar structures. Focus on Grammar helps students understand and practice English grammar through contextualized listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Focus on Grammar combines controlled and communicative practice with critical thinking skills and ongoing assessment.

The ELT Grammar Book: A Teacher-Friendly Reference Guide (Alta Teacher Resource Series) ReviewThe ELT Grammar Book is a reference guide for
teachers of English to speakers of other languages.
Readers may recognize the author's name as the
columnist of "Grammatically Speaking" in TESOL
Matters and "The Grammar Guy" in ESL Magazine.
Richard Firsten has taken his grammatical expertise
and produced a reference tool that focuses on topics
both difficult to understand and explain. The style is
casual and relaxed, which is a pleasant deviation
from typical pedantic grammar reference materials.
Though extensive and in-depth (22 chapters
and 8 appendices totaling over 550 pages), the text is
not intended to be exhaustive. Topics were restricted
to include only high frequency areas typically most
troublesome to teachers and L2 learners alike.
Eighteen of the chapters focus on grammar-exclusive
themes that include such topics as adjectives, articles,
modal auxiliaries, passives, prepositions,
subjunctives, verb tenses, and word order. Three
chapters are primarily discourse related.
Autosegmentals are analyzed in chapters 15 and 18;
the former chapter covers word and phrase stress
while the latter focuses on sentence-level intonation.
Chapter 21 is entitled "ELT 'Waifs'" and deals with
relaxed pronunciation, intensifiers, and common
phrases seldom included in instructional texts.
Phrases that add so much to the flow of conversational
English such as "a great deal of" or the frequent use
of the suffix "-ish" (childish, pinkish, late-ish, around
eight-ish) can assist the L2 student in understanding
common discourse. In the final chapter, the author
notes the changing nature of the English language
and predicts upcoming transformations that are likely
to occur.
Each of the 21 instructional chapters
concludes with "Teaching Tips," which supply
instructors with resources that allow students to
flesh out the content material through numerous
activities designed for pairwork and/or small groups.
These activities alone make the text a valuable
resource. Scattered throughout many of the chapters
is an aside called "Troubleshooter." This
informational box interrupts instructional sections
with pertinent explanations in anticipation of
students' questions. Another strength of the text is
the salient feature of the inductive method of
instruction. For example, situations are often
presented in the form of dialogs so that readers can
observe the grammar point contextually. By
highlighting selected portions of the dialog and
through provocative questioning, the writer models
a lesson requiring the reader to elicit a rule or to
figure out why a certain construction is used.
Employing this critical thinking strategy leads to
discovery, and ideally, to student ownership of that
specific grammar point. At a minimum, adding this
method to one's teaching repertoire will supply
diversity to classroom instruction.
Finally, the eight appendices cover a range
of subject matter that includes strategies, games,
pronunciation, spelling, and further elaboration on
previously covered material. For instance, the author
has provided an excellent outline in the second
appendix that uses the mechanical, meaningful/
manipulative, and communication approach in
relaying content material. Examples abound using
cloze procedures, slot substitutions, and incomplete
dialogs.
Many ESL professionals rely upon college
composition reference manuals for consultation.
Often these tools provide ESL-specific material only
in the form of an appendix or sub-section. The
detailed instruction found in The ELT Grammar Book,
however, is designed exclusively with the L2 learner
in mind. Its primary limitation is found in the
authors' intentionally selective subject matter which
may leave instructors searching elsewhere for
particular topics not addressed. Regardless, whether
an instructor's method of infusing grammar is
comprised primarily of explicit discrete-point
instruction or incidentally through a more
communicative approach, the information, activities,
and strategies offered in this text will provide a
handy reference tool for teachers of L2 students in
various levels and contexts.

Daytona Beach CommunityThe ELT Grammar Book: A Teacher-Friendly Reference Guide (Alta Teacher Resource Series) OverviewAt long last English language teachers have what they've been waiting for—a "professional friend" to give a helping hand at all times! A great deal more than a grammar book, this new resource explores areas of the language that teachers have found troublesome to understand, hard to explain, and challenging to demonstrate to students. Its down-to-earth, reader-friendly format gives a fresh, new way of looking at complex material, in turn preparing teachers to communicate better and give more effective examples to students. The 22 chapters explore word order, articles, present, past, and future tenses, the overlooked uses of some and any, modal auxiliaries, prepositions, genitives, compound nouns and adjectives, passives and causatives, direct object companions, two-and three-word verbs, subjunctives, conditional sentences, the role of stress and intonation to convey meaning, and more! You'll find valuable information that you've never seen in other grammar reference books! Each chapter:• encourages readers to observe, think about, and make conclusions about grammar points;• features special Troubleshooter boxes with helpful insights on points that often bring problems to the teaching and learning of English because of language interference or other causes; and• concludes with a section of Teaching Tips to help you create an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment in your classroom with a generous amount of activities and games to teach or reinforce the discrete points covered in the chapter. When your mind goes blank and you're trying to remember exactly what native speakers of English say or why they say this or why they don't say that . . . The ELT Grammar Book comes to the rescue! It's a professional friend that you'll consult often over the entire course of your career.
