100 Quickwrites: Fast and Effective Freewriting Exercises that Build Students' Confidence, Develop Their Fluency, and Bring Out the Writer in Every Student ReviewIf you only purchase one writing book, this is a winner. I have used it successfully with ninth grade remedial reading classes. The selections are short and interesting. I do give them more time than is suggested. I find that setting the timer for seven minutes works best for my classes. Students find it so much easier to express their thoughts on paper after reading or listening to selections in this book. This isn't a typical "story starters" book. The literature can be used as an introduction to genre studies, characterization, imagery, point-of-view, and literary analysis as well as for writing activities.100 Quickwrites: Fast and Effective Freewriting Exercises that Build Students' Confidence, Develop Their Fluency, and Bring Out the Writer in Every Student OverviewA rich collection of poems and short passages, perfect for middle school. Teachers read one of the powerful pieces aloud and invite students to respond to one of the freewriting suggestions. Teachers will be amazed at what students can write in 2-3 minutes! A quick and effective way to share models of strong writing and to get students writing and thinking . . . and a great way to focus attention at the beginning of class! For use with Grades 5 & Up.

Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary ReviewI got this book during summer vacation in an attempt to make vocabulary instruction more interesting. I copied the first two pages for my 5th graders, we sang the original song, and then I had them tell me which words fit in which blanks. Then, we sang it again. In under 15 minutes, the kids new 7 new Tier 2 words! On top of that, we were all laughing our heads off about "Be compassionate to your web-footed comrades."
Each songs has several synonyms that would fit into the blanks. I whited out all but one synonym for each blanked out word. This made our instruction quicker and more focused. It also didn't overwhelm them with too many synonyms to remember. After this, I put the new words on note cards on a bulletin board and when the kids find these words in their daily reading, they can show me the word and then go up and put a tally on the note card.
Lots of fun, sticks in your head. It's a fool-proof way to learn words, and it's way more exciting than vocabulary books.Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary OverviewIntroduce students to new words and their meanings using favorite childhood songs and rhymes. First, students sing or recite a familiar song or rhyme and discuss what it means. Then, they replace some of its words with synonyms. Students can learn 10 to 20 new vocabulary words per song or rhyme. A fun yet meaningful way to build vocabulary! For use with Grades 3–6.

The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-To-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) ReviewI wish I had had this book when I changed careers midlife and stepped into a 9th grade English classroom with little more than a textbook, my emergency credential, and a pair of knocking knees three years ago. Mary Lou Brandvik's book is aimed at new junior high and high school teachers and offers help in classroom management, lesson plans, and teaching writing and literature. Many books I've looked at or purchased tend to offer general ideas for instruction designed to work in a wide range of classes, but this book is truly aimed at the English teacher. Her book gave me what no one else did: a guide and a framework that would have helped me get through that first difficult year. It's filled with good ideas for writing assignments and novel (but functional) suggestions for student reading responses, group and individual projects, and speeches. A friend of mine complains about "quilt-making" activities taught at teachers' classes we've attended -- those vague, touchy-feely activities that don't move students ahead in skills. This book's activities are really linked to improving writing and reading. No paper quilts, thank heaven.Brandvik includes a section on working with others (parents, administrators, etc.) and a brief chapter on becoming a more effective teacher. Save the life of a new, desperate English teacher: Give him or her this book.The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-To-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) Overview

Lessons from a Writer's Life: Readings and Resources for Teachers and Students ReviewCofer connects the forms and tools of a writer to central themes in any writer's work. The theme of "otherness", an essential theme of all good literature, is mined in a way that is expansive rather than didactic. My favorites for teaching and discussion are "Who Is the Alien?" (a personal essay) and "Life Boat" (a poem). Highly recommend this book both as a personal read and for the high school classroom.Lessons from a Writer's Life: Readings and Resources for Teachers and Students OverviewThere is much in this book to inspire any writer to seek more in his or her own writing: to pay attention to sounds, smells, people, and dialogue. Because Judith's voice is strong, offering such a real and rich invitation, my students will listen.-Penny Kittle, author of Write Beside Them Young-adult novelist Judith Ortiz Cofer will inspire your high writers with stories and poems drawn from her childhood in Puerto Rico and her self-invention as an American writer and teacher. And, in a practical Resource section a the back of the book, Judith speaks to the craft of writing and shares the tools she has forged to generate ideas and help her writing speak the truth more strongly and clearly-tools you and your students will use again and again. BONUS: Teaching Tips by Harvey "Smokey" Daniels, Carol Jago, and Penny Kittle

The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing (Essential Resource Library) ReviewWhatever your experience or expertise as a writer, you can always benefit from new techniques for fleshing out ideas, developing technique or revising work, not to mention brushing up on the rules of punctuation, grammar and style.
All of this and more is covered in tremendous detail in The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing.
Author Thomas Kane, who also penned other guides for Oxford, explains the premise for this guide:
"Obviously, there are limits: one cannot learn to write like Shakespeare or Charles Dickens. You can't become a genius by reading a book.
"But you don't have to be a genius to write clear, effective English. You just have to understand what writing involves and to know how to handle words and sentences and paragraphs. That you can learn. If you do, you can communicate what you want to communicate in words other people can understand. This book will help by showing you what good writers do."
The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing is divided into several parts which address a variety of issues. These include:
* The Writing Process
* The Essay
* The Expository Paragraph
* The Sentence
* Diction
* Description And Narration
* Punctuation
Many shy away from writing guides, such as this. They believe it's hard work to read and even harder work to apply. Not so with The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing. It is written in an authoritative but disarming manner, scattered with poignant quotes from some of the masters of the craft, which make it accessible to scribes of all levels.
It explains in simple layperson's terms the processes and mechanics of writing. The chapters also feature practical exercises for workshopping ~ an excellent way to understand and apply what you've just read.
I particularly liked the `Drafts and Revisions' chapter, which offered some solid techniques and advice on refining work. Also the examples of style and technique from literary greats, such as Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, E.B. White and Annie Dillard.
Another excellent writers' guide from Oxford. This is an essential reference for new and veteran wordsmiths. Newcomers will gain comprehensive instruction in the art of writing, including techniques for encouraging creativity, organizing thoughts and clear writing. As for experienced scribes, this guide will remind you what you've forgotten and, most importantly, it will help you add that `something missing' to your writing.
-- Michael Meanwell, author of the critically-acclaimed 'The Enterprising Writer' and 'Writers on Writing'. For more book reviews and prescriptive articles for writers, visit www.enterprisingwriter.comThe Oxford Essential Guide to Writing (Essential Resource Library) Overview

Writing Works: A Resource Handbook for Therapeutic Writing Workshops and Activities (Writing for Therapy Or Personal Development) ReviewThis was a dissapointing book for me as I was looking for good journal reference, but all their examples are taken from poetry. It is out of balance in that way and should state in the title that all the exercises involve poetry.
John Laughlin, Reading Thomas MertonWriting Works: A Resource Handbook for Therapeutic Writing Workshops and Activities (Writing for Therapy Or Personal Development) OverviewThe use of creative writing as a route to personal development is a powerful therapeutic tool - a fact that is recognized in the growing numbers of workshops and writing groups within professional contexts, including clinical, health and criminal justice settings. "Nurturing Words" is a guide for writers or therapists working with groups or individuals and is full of practical advice on everything from the equipment needed to run a session to ideas for themes, all backed up by the theory that underpins the methods explained. Experienced practitioners in the field contribute detailed illuminating accounts of organizing writing workshops for a wide range of different clients, together with examples of their outcomes. This book will be an invaluable start-up reference for arts therapists and professionals working across the health, social care and caring professions, and one that will be referred to again and again.

CliffsAP English Language and Composition ReviewI had a really bad experience with my AP Lang class; the teacher never did anything relevant to the AP exam, and all we did was read novels and put together scrapbooks that somehow related to the books. When May arrived, I knew that I was in trouble, and I borrowed this book from my library, and I absolutely attribute my 5 on the exam to it. The practice questions are extremely similar to the real thing, and the explanations are in the right line of thinking that you have to bring the exam in order to do well, and that's all that this exam is about, just how you think. The essay samples are also really well evaluated, and the book offers a glossary on literary terms that you'll have to know. The book is good for quick preparation (I literally had a little over a week with this book) and long-term practice (which is what I wish I had done instead of freaking out a week beforehand). Engage the Brain: Games, Language Arts, Grades 6-8 ReviewI purchased this book hoping for additional curriculum-reinforcing games that would enhance the learning experience of my English students. While the games in this book do just that, the instructions for some are rather lengthy; they may contain as many as ten or twelve steps. However, if you can work your way through the directions and the prep (cutting out and photo-copying), you will find the games to be fun and effective. The book is divided into four chapters: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, and Listening and Speaking. Many games have extended learning activities (which is good for the more advanced students). Some of the material covers such things as defining vocabulary words through context clues, multiple-meaning words, root and compound words, tone and attitude in literature, literary genres, parts of speech, sentence parts, editing skills, literary devices (metaphors and similes), etc. While I do consider this book an asset, I doubt I will reach for it as often as some of my other books. I would have given it a definite five-star rating were it not for the lengthy, somewhat involved instructions of some of the games.Engage the Brain: Games, Language Arts, Grades 6-8 OverviewThis exciting new resource offers fun, innovative gamesin language arts. Based on the most recent brain research, the games engage students in becoming active, motivated learners.
