Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (Theory and Practice) ReviewEach year teachers are amazed at how little their students know about grammar, usage, and correctness. "Why don't you know this?" they ask their students. "Didn't your teacher TEACH you this last year?" Blank expressions on their faces, the kids shake their heads "no," but a visit to last year's teacher brings indignation. "I certainly DID teach them (fill in the blank with your favorite grammar term)!" she says testily -- or quizzically, depending on her mood.
Sound familiar? It does to me, which is why I bought GETTING IT RIGHT. After years of frustration with "Teflon Grammatical Memory Syndrome" and with correcting a gazillion errors on a gajillion student papers, I looked to two familiar names -- Michael Smith and Jeffrey Wilhelm -- for answers. I wasn't disappointed.
Smith and Wilhelm start with conclusive research that the teaching of grammar in isolation does not work. Then they roll up their sleeves to show us what DOES work. Essentially they argue that it is a depth vs. breadth issue when it comes to grammar. Rather than trying to teach everything, teachers should focus on what's important and most likely to benefit the students in the long run. Their two justifications for teaching a term? "1. The term is so commonly used that teachers, texts, and tests presume that students know it. 2. The term is essential to being able to explain an important issue of style or correctness."
Boiling the vast world of grammar minutiae down to 16 basic terms/concepts, Smith and Wilhelm demonstrate creative ways to teach them based on their own experiences as well as those of student teachers who have worked under their tutelage. The practical ideas will be invaluable to teachers looking for new methods of reaching their kids in this most challenging of tasks. Prompts and handout examples are provided, along with samples of typical student errors and ways to help students learn from them.
Teachers will especially appreciate the section called "A Model Sequence: Learning to Proofread." Here the authors have mercy by telling teachers to free themselves of their shackles. Circling every error on every paper is NOT productive (unless improving your own editing skills while your kids learn nothing counts as "productive"). Instead, teachers should model proofreading and provide practice on carefully selected concepts, then serve as mentors by teaching specific skills and having students serve as their own editors by focusing on errors related to those skills only. Also, peer proofreading ideas that work are spelled out -- one in particular that involves creative use of the TV series CSI. Here it means "Correct Sentence Investigators" -- and yes, the proofreaders are "agents" and the errors are the "crime" (meaning you're about to witness the unlikely marriage of "fun" and "editing").
Buy it. Read it. Use it. Most importantly, it will help your students become better writers and self-editors; less importantly (but still worthy of your consideration!) YOU will feel a little more sane and a lot more effective when you send your kids off to the next grade where they might just surprise their new teacher by saying, "Participles? Yeah, we actually DID learn how to use THEM last year!"
Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (Theory and Practice) OverviewThe authors consider what grammatical concepts and correctness issues are most worth teaching andhow to teach those concepts and issues deeply. They explain how to understand the causes of students' errors, how to address those causes through authentic and engaging activities, and how teachers can work together to increase their effectiveness. They provide both guiding principles and plenty of examples that readers will be able to employ immediately For use with Grades 4 & Up.

Nonfiction in Focus: A Comprehensive Framework for Helping Students Become Independent Readers and Writers of Nonfiction, K-6 ReviewI have these authors' earlier books on selecting nonfiction, which are terrific. But this one is better because it not only gives guidelines for making wise choices, but also offers lots of good, practical ideas for using your choices to teach reading, writing, and content-area subjects. The ideas can be used in whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one instruction. Plus, there's a clear opening section on the underlying principles behind the ideas. These authors know what they're talking about--and clearly have spent time in classrooms.Nonfiction in Focus: A Comprehensive Framework for Helping Students Become Independent Readers and Writers of Nonfiction, K-6 Overview

But How Do You Teach Writing: A Simple Guide for All Teachers ReviewSimple means Simple. And that's exactly what this book is, simple: Simple to read, to understand, to implement. You can tell Lane had way too much fun writing this thing. And I had too much fun reading it. It really leaks Barry Lane. Being a third grade teacher and writing consultant for the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project, I find this book comforting. You know, like a fresh shirt out of the dryer. I've read all the great authors on the subject: Fletcher, Caulkins, Romano, Graves, just to name a few. Barry Lane brings it here. He brings the heat. He brings the human element, the element missing in today's schools. This book spoke to me in many ways. However, the recurring theme throughout the book, is that we need to teach kids on their turf, in their backyard. He truly believes that everyone can find their writing voice, given the freedom to look for it, EVERYWHERE.
I've recommended this book to all first year teachers and teachers new to Writing Workshop. It's blue collar in nature, but the message? Deep.
Read it, dude. But How Do You Teach Writing: A Simple Guide for All Teachers OverviewThrough anecdote, classroom vignette, and his own experience as a writer and teacher, Barry encourages teachers of any grade level to start a writing program tomorrow and not wait until they have attained perfect understanding. Barry's motto: Let's learn along the way! For use with Grades K-12.

Learning to Write with Purpose: Effective Instruction in Grades 4-8 (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewThe written word has to have a reason behind it or it is worthless. "Learning to Write With Purpose: Effective Instruction in Grades 4-8" is a guide for educators teaching elementary and middle school age students how to give their writing purpose and meaning. Writing is communication, and learning to use that communication to display thoughts and ideas is an absolutely invaluable skill. Packed cover to cover with advice for educators, "Learning to Write with Purpose" is a solid addition to community library education collections with a focus on language arts.Learning to Write with Purpose: Effective Instruction in Grades 4-8 (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewCommunicating ideas and information is what makes writing meaningful-yet many upper elementary and middle school students write in a vacuum, without considering the aims of their writing or the needs of their readers. This highly informative, teacher-friendly book presents a fresh perspective on writing instruction along with practical methods for the classroom. Teachers learn ways to promote the skills and strategies needed to write and revise effectively in a range of genres: personal narratives, fiction, and poetry; persuasive, explanatory, and "how-to" writing; and writing for high-stakes tests. Special features include vivid classroom vignettes, examples of student work, evaluation guidelines, and suggested "mentor texts" that model different genres.

Writetype: Personality Types and Writing Styles ReviewWriteType is a useful application of MBTI personality typing to the work of writing and managing writers. Almost 25 years old, it escapes datedness through the continued popularity of the Myers-Briggs personality framework and the absence of any more recent application of the MBTI to writing. It's worth a quick first read and a place on your desk for later reference.
Following a concise description of personality typing, Gladis introduces his classification of writers into Correspondents (SF), Technical Writers (ST), Creative Writers (NF), and Analytical Writers (NT). This scheme structures the rest of the book as the author explores the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of these four writing types. The book closes with a discussion of how different types of writers work together in teams and how they can best be managed.
This book is both well written and well designed. Particularly useful is the one-page "Thumbnail Personality Sketch" that allows readers to quickly estimate their own personality types, making the remainder of the book more relevant and useful. Thoughtfully distilled summary tables emphasize differences between writers in basic approach to writing, use of prewriting techniques, drafting strategies, editing styles, and response to team assignments and feedback.
The author's other books on writing, Survival Writing for Business and Manager's Pocket Guide to Effective Writing, are also recommended. Readers desiring a more detailed, but still informal introduction to personality types will enjoy People Types & Tiger Stripes. Readers should be aware that the "Big 5" approach to personality has accrued more research support for employment selection than the MBTI. The Owner's Manual for Personality at Work is a readable and nontechnical introduction to this more current view of personality in the work setting.Writetype: Personality Types and Writing Styles OverviewBased on individual personality styles, it provides new strategies for the four basic types of writers: the correspondent, the technical writer, the creative writer, and the analytical writer. Each person fits into one of these well defined types of writing styles, and once readers learn their writing personality types, the book guides them through the writing process.

Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition ReviewWhatever your reasons are for wanting to study Japanese, you'd do well to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Some people go for the spoken-only approach, but I've found that learning hiragana, katakana, and a lot of the kanji has definitely improved by retention of Japanese vocabulary. Many Japanese words include kanji (for example, the word "nihon" for Japan is the combination of the kanji for "sun" and the kanji for "origin"), so knowing what the words literally mean will help increase your understanding of Japanese overall.
After learning hiragana and katakana (the syllabaries of Japanese; much simpler than kanji, these are sound-based rather than meaning-based), you'll want to integrate kanji into your study of the language. That's where this book comes in. The 1,006 Essential Characters are listed by grade (1st through 6th). Each of these kanji entries includes: the stroke order, Japanese pronunciations, meanings in English, and three examples of the kanji contained in Japanese words. The 1,945 General Use Characters are listed by stroke-order (1 through 23); this includes all of the kanji of the 1,006 set plus those other general use characters not taught in 1st through 6th grade. A hiragana and katakana chart is also included, as well as an index sorted by pronunciation in the back.
This book makes a great reference for teaching yourself the kanji. Of course, you shouldn't expect to end up using this book alone for learning the kanji; it's more helpful for review and reference. There are plenty of resources on-line and several other books that would be helpful to use in conjunction with this book. For example, Kanji Pict-o-Graphix encourages mnemonic, visual memorization and Japanese For Everyone focuses on both written and conversational Japanese. However, this book serves the purpose it was created for: to provide clear and succinct entries for the Joyo kanji so you can learn how to write and understand them. It is an essential reference that every Japanese-language learner should own.Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition OverviewA best-seller trusted by beginning and intermediate students since 1959 and now in its third edition, this affordable study guide includes all 1,945 current joyo kanji. Detailed entries for all 1,009 "essential" kanji include stroke order, meanings, and pronunciation.

Guidelines: A Cross-Cultural Reading/Writing Text (Cambridge Academic Writing Collection) ReviewI began using Guidelines (the first edition) in 1995 when it was essentially prescribed by an EFL colleague using it to teach another section of composition. I found it to be one of the best texts I've ever used for a comp class. The readings are genuinely engaging and students really felt motivated to reply in writing and with in-class discussion. Many years later, I'm no longer teaching composition, but keep this book on my shelf anyway since I never know when I will want to refer to one of the readings.

The book contains stimulating cross-cultural readings that provide source materials for critical thinking and writing. The book concludes with a hundred-page handbook that contains information on how to document sources and how to draft, review, revise, and edit.

Breakthrough in Beginning Reading and Writing: The Evidence-Based Approach to Pinpointing Students' Needs and Delivering Targeted Instruction (Theory and Practice) ReviewIn this book, J. Richard Gentry uses phase theory to explain how beginning readers are neurologically different than skilled adult readers. The first five chapters delineate, in brief descriptions based on phonological awareness and writing skills, how young students' literacy abilities and needs can be categorized into the five different phases. Gentry also briefly provides teaching strategies for each phase so as to help move students finally into phase 4, where they finally begin demonstrating more adult-like literacy skills.
As a teacher of primary readers, I appreciate Gentry's overview of the phases, especially the way he considers all aspects of literacy skills--including phonological awareness, writing, and spelling--and not just reading. However, I would have liked more in-depth descriptions of not only the phase characteristics but also specific learning objectives and teaching strategies within each of the phases.
Unfortunately, Gentry presupposes understanding of not only his previous book, Breaking the Code, but also the work of other literacy experts. For example, Gentry focuses one short chapter on the supposed short-comings of Marie Clay's Reading Recovery model. Although Gentry's arguments are succinct and specific, Clay's eminent reading intervention model deserves more understanding and professional contemplation than a novice reader could derive from this book.
Ultimately, it appears Gentry is trying to revolutionize the instruction of beginning readers. His ideas and theories deserve some attention, and may be helpful to classroom teachers. However, within this short book, I don't think he lands his point.
Breakthrough in Beginning Reading and Writing: The Evidence-Based Approach to Pinpointing Students' Needs and Delivering Targeted Instruction (Theory and Practice) OverviewDrawing on major new insights in brain research, Gentry shows how reading and writing develop in five phases-from operations with no letter knowledge to understanding of phonics chunks-that provide the blueprint for instructional approaches. The book enables teachers to identify a child's phase of development, set reasonable expectations for growth, and select the methods that will move each child forward. For use with Grades PreK-2.

Online Style Guide: Terms, Usage, and Tips ReviewI admit that because of the publication date being a couple years old, I was skeptical that this reference book would help me. I thought it might be outdated with all the changes in the Internet. While there are some terms that are new since this book was published, and some of the "names" of software or companies have changed, I found the book to still be very useful and surprisingly current. It has helped my editorial team stay consistent with terminology and usage. The grammar section is awesome--great tips that I have shared with our writers! The emoticons are fun. And the netiquette and style sections gave me lots of ideas for our company style guide. I especially appreciate the layout of the book--the tabs make it really easy to find what I need and it lays flat next to the computer--something the others don't. Minor points, maybe. But overall, I rate this a good buy compared to similar books on the market that I've used.Online Style Guide: Terms, Usage, and Tips OverviewOverview: *Online Style Guide* is an easy-to-use guide towriting for and about the Internet. Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI am an educator who recently had to overhaul and redesign a large-scale vocabulary instruction program. The information in this book was invaluable to me. I found it to be accurate, insightful, actionable, well-organized, and comprehensive.
As another teacher suggested, this book is not full of teaching activities, lesson plans, or word lists. (If you want that kind of book, you might try The Vocabulary Teacher's Book of Lists.) It is, however, full of big-picture facts and credible answers to important questions. It gave me confidence in my approach and helped me make many decisions. It also helped me plan teacher training.
If you are teaching in a traditional classroom setting with an established curriculum and an established set of practices, this book will probably not change the way you teach very much (although it might be interesting). However, if you are making larger-scale decisions about your vocabulary program, this book is a wonderful resource.Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewThis highly practical book presents research-based approaches to building students' vocabulary and promoting a lifelong appreciation of words. Prominent researchers identify and discuss the multiple components of effective vocabulary instruction--teaching the meanings of specific words, teaching students strategies for learning new words on their own, and providing opportunities for word and language play. In every chapter, findings on the processes of successful vocabulary learning are translated into useful, effective instructional activities and techniques. Outlined are important new ideas for designing curricula and providing experiences that help students of all ages and skill levels gain access to the meanings of words that they read. Throughout, engaging classroom examples enhance the utility of this teacher-friendly resource.

25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing (Grades 3-6) ReviewThis book is fantastic! Our son (age 9) is extremely bright and a good reader and has always been an excellent student. Now in 3rd grade, there is an emphasis on writing in his classroom and for some reason he developed what the teacher described as a "mental block" about writing, because he didn't know how to get started. He would get anxious and upset and end up in tears, saying "I don't know what to write."
I bought a few different books to help with the challenge, and this book was by far the most valuable. It got him past his mental block. He and I do one mini-lesson each week at home, on the weekends when we are relaxed. The mini-lessons are short, focused and fun. In just a few short weeks, our son has made progress both at home and in the classroom. I even consulted with a professional tutor in our area, who said that we were on the right track by using this book - she was very impressed with it.
Thank you Adele Fiderer!25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing (Grades 3-6) Overview25 quick lessons on choosing and focusing topics, writing titles and leads that entice readers, crafting great endings, using details, showing character's feelings, clarifying fuzzy writing, getting rid of repetition, finding strong verbs, writing sentences with a sense of rhythm, and more. Kids' Poems (Grades 1) ReviewRegie promised great results with this book and she delivered! The book is a quick read - concise and to the point. It is organized with an overview of the instructional sequence, then subsequent chapters are devoted to each step. Each chapter includes strategies and minilessons, often referencing the student work that is included in the second half of the book. The student work includes both first and final drafts. I used the student work faithfully in my instruction - it was very powerful. Each one of my third graders wrote incredibly descriptive verse about the water cycle. After reading my students' work, a colleague remarked that their verse gave her chills! (I took that comment in a positive way). My kids and I are totally jazzed about writing now!Kids' Poems (Grades 1) OverviewRegie Routman shares her delightful selection of free verse poems written by first graders that will inspire your second graders to think, I can write poems like this too! Regie provides strategies for using kids' poems as models to guide children to write poems about things they know and care about: learning to skate, disliking asparagus, playing with a best friend, and more. She describes the way she invites children to study the model poem, beginning by asking kids, What do you notice? She shows how she demonstrates the poetry-writing process to children: thinking aloud and drafting poems about her own life, and then collaborating on a poem together before children write on their own. Includes 20 reproducible poems written and illustrated by first graders to share with kids. Perfect for classroom teachers and parents! For use with Grade 1.
