Literacy Instruction in Multicultural Settings (HBJ Literacy Series) ReviewThis book gives voice to a viewpoint that is desperately missing in the dialogue of education and educational reform. Anyone who works within the institution of education needs to read this. It is insightful and as unbiased as a work can be when dealing with the topic of students from cultural and ethnic backgrounds that have been educationally, politically, and socially marginalized (oppressed) within American society. Those who find fault with it should take a more unbiased viewpoint of American history and politics.Literacy Instruction in Multicultural Settings (HBJ Literacy Series) OverviewSocial Constructivist presentation of diversity issues in literacy instruction.

Apprenticeship in Literacy ReviewIf you liked Guided Reading by Fountas and Pinnell, you'll REALLY enjoy this book. It includes not only easy to understand philosophy, but exacting implementation suggestions (pictures, too) along with excellent teacher language you'll want to use in conjunction with the explicit guided reading and writing suggestions for every level: emergent, early and fluent. I'm a Reading Recovery teacher who also works with literacy groups and think this is the best classroom balanced literacy book I've seen to date.Apprenticeship in Literacy Overview
This easy-to-read text will guide K-3 teachers as they develop a reading and writing program for all their students. An apprenticeship approach to literacy emphasizes the role of the teacher in providing demonstrations, engaging children, monitoring their understanding, providing timely support and, ultimately, withdrawing that support as the child gains independence.
Drawing on authentic classroom examples—student writing samples, class schedules, photographs, and rich transcriptions of teaching and learning interactions—the authors illustrate instruction that is aimed at children's learning zones. As children become more competent readers and writers, the instructional interactions are adjusted to accommodate their higher-level learning.

Here is a wealth of in-depth information, specific strategies, and organizational formats in literacy areas such as:principles of apprenticeship literacy;learning to read from a cognitive apprenticeship approach, including the roles of read-aloud, familiar reading, and shared reading;
guided reading, including flexible grouping, reading and writing links, and instructional interactions that emphasize problem-solving strategies;helping children develop writing strategies through interactive writing, writing aloud, and revising and editing transactions;transitions in children's independent writing, including their relationship to modeling and coaching demonstrations during assisted writing;helping children acquire phonological knowledge, including activities that guide children in manipulating letters, sounds, and spelling patterns;a typical day of putting it all together in two apprenticeship settings: a first-grade classroom and a Title I reading program;using school-based professional literacy teams to support teachers in developing an effective literacy program for their children.
No detail is lost. The authors also cover such practical matters as establishing routines and organizing the classroom environment, including rotation schedules for meeting with small groups of children, lists of materials for establishing literacy corners, and literacy corner activities designed to provide the children with opportunities for independent practice.

With Apprenticeship in Literacy you can achieve a balanced literacy program that works for all your students.

Word Matters: Teaching Phonics and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom ReviewClear, to-the-point, and full of great ideas to help those who work with elementary children learning to read. The feature I like best is the built in professional development suggestions to use the book within a building, a grade or a district as an inservice tool. Don't miss this one!Word Matters: Teaching Phonics and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom Overview In 1996, Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas presented Guided Reading, the most comprehensive guided reading resource ever published. Hailed for its practical, systematic approach, the book showed hundreds of thousands of teachers how to address the needs of the whole classroom as well as individual readers. Now, with the publication of Word Matters, Pinnell and Fountas offer K-3 teachers the same unparalleled support, this time focusing on phonics and spelling instruction. Word Matters presents essential information on designing and implementing a high-quality, systematic literacy program to help children learn about letters, sounds, and words. The central goal is to teach children to become "word solvers": readers who can take words apart while reading for meaning, and writers who can construct words while writing to communicate. Where similar books are narrow in focus, Word Matters presents the theoretical underpinnings and practical wherewithal of word study in three contexts: word study that includes systematically planned and applied experiences focusing on the elements of letters and words writing, including how children use phoneme-grapheme relationships, word patterns, and principles to develop spelling ability reading, including teaching children how to solve words with the use of phonics and visual-analysis skills as they read for meaning. Each topic is supported with a variety of practical tools: reproducible sheets for a word study system and for writing workshop; lists of spelling minilessons; and extensive word lists, including frequently used words, antonyms, synonyms, and more. Armed with these tools-and the tried-and-true wisdom of Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas-teachers can help students develop not just the "essential skills," but also a joyful appreciation of their own literacy.

The Daily Five ReviewI purchased this book and read it within a few hours. This book is cleary written, conscise, not full of jargon, and truly written for the classroom teacher to implement effectively. I teach 1st grade and can easily transition my students into this routine. The authors offer practical advice regarding teaching of behaviors, management, assessment, and references for further reading and research. What a refreshing change from dense, heady teacher-reading! An ASSET to any professional library (literacy teacher or elementary teacher)! The Daily Five Overview
Do you love teaching but feel exhausted from the energy you expend cajoling, disciplining, and directing students on a daily basis? If so, you'll want to meet "The Sisters", Gail Boushey and Joan Moser.Based on literacy learning and motivation research, they created a structure called The Daily Five which has been practiced and refined in their own classrooms for ten years, and shared with thousands of teachers throughout the United States. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.

This book not only explains the philosophy behind the structure, but shows you how to carefully and systematically train your students to participate in each of the five components.

Explicit modeling practice, reflecting and refining take place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content instruction tailored to meet the needs of each child.

The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

Reading the Web: Strategies for Internet Inquiry (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI was required to read this book for a class I was taking. At first glance I thought it would be "just another textbook." However, I quickly realized what a goldmine of information and guidance the book delivers. It takes a huge concept and breaks it down into readily usable applications. Too often I will find great theory resources, but they will lack the day-to-day nitty gritty of application. This book has the theory, the steps, the handouts, even the lesson plans. I found the readability engaging and direct. Great resource and great introduction into the miasma of inquiry-based research and 21st literacy skills. Thank you, Drs. Eagleton and Dobler, you have given me a launch into a whole new curriculum!Reading the Web: Strategies for Internet Inquiry (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewPacked with ideas and instructional activities that cut across all content areas, this engaging book provides a comprehensive framework for promoting vital Web literacy skills in grades 3-8. Teacher-friendly special features include helpful graphics, sidebars, practical tips, and nearly 100 reproducibles. Using a research-based, classroom-tested model of Internet inquiry, the authors explain the "whats," "whys," and "how-tos" of helping diverse learners: *Locate useful information sources on the Web*Navigate the contents of a website*Critically evaluate what they read online*Synthesize the results of an Internet inquiry*Express new knowledge in their own words

The New Press Guide to Multicultural Resources for Young Readers ReviewI'm currently enrolled in graduate school, and my field of interest is education. One of the classes I'm taking is about diversity in education, one which I'm enjoying immensely. I myself have a diverse background (Indian-Portuguese) and am married to an Irish Catholic, and our daughter is a living example of the mix of many cultures. So,this book also appealed to me on a personal level. There are so many perspectives on the issues of multiculturalism and diversity, and the number of materials out there is simply mind-boggling. I have found this book to be very useful in gaining insights into multicultural literature for grades K through 8. The book itself is well-organized, and contains over 1,000 critical book reviews on the subject as well as critical essays pertaining to multicultural education.
In brief, here are the chapters contained within the book:
Introduction
Essays included are:
Milestones in Children's Literature
10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children's Books for Racism and Sexism (very useful and insightful)
The All-White World of Children's Books
Chapter One: Who Am I? Who Are We?
Addresses issues of identity and diversity in multicultural children's literature. Book reviews are provided for grades K-8.
Chapter Two: The Family
Very important and timely chapter as it deals with issues pertaining to marriage, siblings, divorce, single parents, blended families, foster care, adoption, and aging. On a personal level, I found Peggy Gillespie's essay, "Other" to be especially pertinent, as it addresses the interracial family and the issues they face.
Chapter Three: Community/Friendship
Covers the issues/themes of community service, cooperation, gangs, conflict resolution, and homelessness. Great ideas such as starting a literary club at school are also addressed.
Chapter Four: Cultural Traditions
Besides covering the different cultural traditions such as found in the Muslim, Christian, Jewish tradition, etc, this chapter has lots of information such as a segment on "Teaching Respect for Native Peoples", and insightful essays, such as "Ethnic and Gender Stereotyping in Disney Animation".
Chapter Five: Folktales, Fairy Tales, and Legends: Fantasy and Imagination
Besides offering critical reviews of multicultural books in this genre, there are also interesting essays such as "Public Libraries: Cultural Repositories for Everyone's Stories" by Rose E. Warder.
Chapter Six: Newcomers Establishing Roots
Discusses how children come to grips with issues of isolation and language barriers, and how these themes can be integrated in the classroom context.
Chapter Seven: Justice, Human Rights, Equity
Discusses how literature can have a powerful impact in enabling children to recreate the world for themselves and future generations. Also stresses the importance of children learning to identify bias within books, research information, and analyze data, which is part of developing their cognitive skills in terms of abstract and critical thinking.
Chapter Eight: Building Cross-Cultural Relationships
Essays included provide useful strategies for developing community of learners in schools, and tips on using multicultural materials effectively (themes covered include biracial/interracial relationships, second language acquisition, unlearning stereotypes, and sharing cultural traditions).
There is a comprehensive index at the end.
Highly recommended resource for multicultural education Grades K-8.The New Press Guide to Multicultural Resources for Young Readers Overview

Fun with Synonyms - Crossword Puzzles and Word Searches (Fun With... (Teacher Created Resources)) ReviewThis is an excellent puzzle book. It helps children in expanding their vocab and it is a fun and interesting tool to encourage cooperative learning in any classroom as students often have to work together to figure out the answers. It is also good for students who work quickly and may disrupt the slower ones. It can be given to the child who finishes first so he/she would not get bored waiting on the others to complete their individual tasks.Fun with Synonyms - Crossword Puzzles and Word Searches (Fun With... Teach Terrific Grammar, Grades 6-8: A Complete Grammar Program for Use in Any Classroom (McGraw-Hill Teacher Resources) ReviewMy students and I are enjoying this book, written at just the right level for middle school. It's a collection of standard grammar worksheets, but they are very doable, and the answers to each form a "secret word" (often a little-known historical figure, or animal), so there's a fun, puzzle-like aspect to them. Makes grammar about as painless as possible. Plus it's extremely difficult to find blackline masters to teach grammar rather than expensive workbooks.Teach Terrific Grammar, Grades 6-8: A Complete Grammar Program for Use in Any Classroom (McGraw-Hill Teacher Resources) Overview
