Literacy Through Play ReviewI was impressed with how fast I received this book and it will be useful to me in my grad class at SUNY Albany in NY.Literacy Through Play OverviewGretchen Owocki lets other teachers in on one of the best-kept secrets of early childhood education: play is a virtual goldmine for facilitating literacy learning. When children play in a purposefully designed, literacy-rich environment, teachers can discover and capitalize on some truly important, highly teachable moments.
Literacy Through Play is a resource for preschool and primary teachers who are looking for proven methods for preparing young children to become confident and flexible readers and writers. Owocki begins the book by establishing the theoretical rationale for the importance of play in literacy development, then outlines what teachers can do to set up a developmentally appropriate environment. She takes us inside two classrooms that use play in smart ways, offering proven ideas for:

Irresistible A, B, Cs (Grades PreK-K) ReviewAlthough I don't teach Letter of the Week, I still use a LOT of fun activities for individual letters throughout the year. The main difference between the old Letter of the Week approach and what I'm doing in my room is twofold:

1. I do every letter every day, as opposed to waiting weeks into the school year to "teach" individual letters.

2. My teaching is planned around thematic units, instead of around the letters of the alphabet.

I'm always looking for new activities that will help my students learn the letters and sounds, and build on prior knowledge. "Irresistable ABC's" has more than 50 fun, multi-sensory activities that incorporate all the learning styles found in most classrooms, and present alphabet knowledge and phonemic awareness/phonics activities using many of the "other" important tools we are teaching our students, including Graphing and Visual Organizers, making Big Books and Little Books, Shared Writing and Language Experience activities, working with names activities, and dozens more.

Many of the activities are extensions for familiar literature you're already using, like "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and "26 Letters and 99 Cents."

Novelli collected the activities from teachers around the country and has a nice balance of activities suitable to pre-K through 2nd grade classrooms. This is a book I think most teachers will enjoy, filled with activities to build on prior knowledge and to complement whatever reading and writing programs you're already using in your classrooms.
Irresistible A, B, Cs (Grades PreK-K) OverviewFreshen up your teaching of the alphabet with these easy, fun, and highly effective strategies and activities from outstanding teachers across the country! This friendly resource is packed with innovative ways to introduce letters and build phonemic awareness as well as great games, art projects, instant learning center ideas, perfect poems, hands-on manipulatives, and so much more. A great way to ensure that all children really learn their ABCs. For use with Grade PreK-K.

26 Read & Write Mini-Books: Beginning Sounds From A to Z: Interactive Stories That Give Early Readers Practice Reading and Writing Words That Begin With Each Letter of the Alphabet ReviewI actually expected them to be more, but that is my own fault for not doing my reasearch. It is definitely too simplistic for my 5 year old, but works well for my 4 year old. Also, it is a reproducable set, so it is all in black and white. Each book consists of one sentence that is broken down. For example the A mini-book. "An Alligator" with a picture of an alligator on the cover. Page 1: An Alligator and an ape..... Page 2 has the word ape with the "a" being traceable and a picture of an alligator and an ape. Page 3: An alligator and an ape share their apples..... Page 4 has the word apples with the "a" being traceable and a picture of an alligator and ape eating from a bushel of apples. Page 5: An alligator and an ape share their apples with the ants. Page 6 has the word ants with the "a" being traceable and a picture of several ants walking away from alligator and ape with apple cores. Page 7 has each of the following. alligator, ape, apples and ants listed as such... picture - traceable word with the "a" missing in front for kids to write it in themselves.
It is in all lowercase letters with the exception of the beginning of the sentence. These are designed to be double sided, but I would not recommend doing that because you would have trouble with bleed through of markers or possible tearing from them being written on. I am using these in my homeschool curriculum to reinforce letter sounds and for an emergent reader, it works well. They do get bored with them quickly though.26 Read & Write Mini-Books: Beginning Sounds From A to Z: Interactive Stories That Give Early Readers Practice Reading and Writing Words That Begin With Each Letter of the Alphabet OverviewSimple, short, and oh, so funny—these charming little stories feature a consistent format, high-frequency words, and supportive illustrations that help children decode and comprehend the text. Each book also gives children repeated practice reading and writing words that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Includes ready-to-photocopy mini-books and skill-building extension activities. For use with Grades PreK-1.

25 Super Sight Word Songs & Mini-Books: Fun Songs Set to Favorite Tunes With Companion Read & Write Mini-Books That Teach Essential Sight Words ReviewMy daughter's teacher, Mrs. Scilingo, recommended this CD to us. I have five kids, ages 8 to 1, and we began listening to the CD in the car to help my five-year-old learn to spell high-frequency words. What we didn't expect was that because the songs are so catchy, our three-year-old and one-year-old also began learning to sing and spell the words! I've always been VERY hands-off and gentle with my approach to teaching reading before age six with all of my kids, so the first three kids didn't learn any reading skills before age five. But after listening to the CD for a few weeks, we're amazed that our little guy (not quite eighteen months!) can spell 'and,' 'to,' 'like,' and other short, high-frequency words! I absolutely love these songs-- they contain the perfect mix of repetition, familiar tunes, and just enough silliness to keep kids interested and oblivious to the fact that they're learning.25 Super Sight Word Songs & Mini-Books: Fun Songs Set to Favorite Tunes With Companion Read & Write Mini-Books That Teach Essential Sight Words OverviewSing a song of sight words! With this super collection of songs on CD and mini-books, kids get lots of practice in reading and writing 35 key sight words. Each song—sung to a familiar tune—features one or more sight words and comes with a fill-in-the-blank mini-book that provides multiple opportunities to write each targeted word. After completing the mini-book, children can read along as they sing the song again and again. A super way to build sight word recognition, boost reading fluency, and reinforce spelling. For use with Grades K–2.

Daily Guided Writing : Grades K-2: Teacher Resource ReviewI briefly borrowed Daily Guided Writing by Carol Simpson from another teacher. As a teaching resource for early writers (K-2), I found it to be quite useful and am purchasing my own copy. What pleased me most is that I didnÕt have to wade through inessential theory to get to the well-organized ideas and suggestions.
The book is divided into three sections: Experience Stories, Using the Daily News, and Journals as Guided Writing Lessons. All sections contain information I already knew along with ideas that made me think, ÒOf course! Why didnÕt I think of that?Ó It is designed with the understanding that your students are progressing in their writing skills throughout the year, so suggestions are given for modeled, shared, guided, and independent writing.
In addition to the main sections, Daily Guided Writing contains an appendix with reproducible Daily News (with and without illustrations), story starters, and suggestions for publishing studentsÕ stories. The appendix is a nice bonus in an already valuable book.Daily Guided Writing : Grades K-2: Teacher Resource OverviewA wealth of ideas and practical suggestions for modeling writing help you incorporate daily writing in meaningful ways through the daily news/morning message, experience stories, and journal writing. Story starters are also included.

Mini-Book of the Week: 40 Easy-to-Read Mini-Books on Fiction and Nonfiction Topics for Every Week of the School Year ReviewThis resource is filled with mini-books that utilize different formats to make them more visually appealing. This book has everything from thematic topics to non-fictional information about animals, insects, holidays and historical figures. I bought this at Border's and paid more but I needed to see the pages to find out if it was what I wanted to purchase because the other review had nothing to do with the content. The reading level in these books is more geared toward 1st grade but I think it will be a great home connection for kindergarten and the students will reteach information from the day's lesson.Mini-Book of the Week: 40 Easy-to-Read Mini-Books on Fiction and Nonfiction Topics for Every Week of the School Year OverviewFlip books, shape books, step books, accordion books, and other fun formats-just right for emergent readers! Language and Thinking for Young Children ReviewThis manual can be used for the entire family. The author's give real-life examples and, thus, make learning fun. For example, when one is introducing someone, my children dressed as an older person, a dad and mother. They would then practice introducing several people in orderof importance. I.E. older people first, ladies and then men. The author's suggested doing this as a way to add fun to the practice. A second example, is practicing prepositions. In this activity, the author suggested making a circle on the floor with a jumping rope. Then using commands with prepositions. For example, I told my children to put their hand in the rope. Other activities include reading classic fables, which are included in the book, vocabulary and thinking skills, language games, memorizing, learning about telephones, enjoying poetry and learning on trips. My children, ages, 3, 7 and 8 have enjoyed this book.Language and Thinking for Young Children OverviewJam-packed with wonderful language activities, this book provides parents and teachers with a year's course of oral language study for children who do not yet read or who are just beginning to read. Learn how to turn every day experiences into valuable learning experiences. Lights the spark of creativity in the parent as well as the student. Working together in the home schooling movement, Beechick and Nelson saw a need to help homeschool parents round out beginning programs with rich language experiences. This book is the result of the collaboration of their educational expertise.
