Sams Teach Yourself MySQL in 10 Minutes ReviewI disagree enough with a couple of the other reviews that I decided to chime in. I found this to be a kick butt little MySQL primer. I just completed a couple-day LAMP project (where phpMyAdmin alone wouldn't save me this time), and this book provided me with enough information to get 'er done.
It's short and to the point. You can (literally) read a couple chapters in a few minutes.
Consider it a quick and handy complement piece to the official, online documentation.Sams Teach Yourself MySQL in 10 Minutes OverviewSams Teach Yourself MySQL in 10 Minutes provides a no-fluff, just-the-answers guide to building and managing MySQL databases. It is carefully organized and thoughtfully written to provide just the information that you need in order to gain a rapid working knowledge of MySQL. Engaging Readers & Writers with Inquiry (Theory and Practice) ReviewWhen we were kids -- and this is true of both all teachers and all students -- we actually WANTED to learn. We asked questions galore. We were curious about things that interested us, and we were relentless in putting together the pieces or engaging the experts (Mom, Coach, the camp windsurfing counselor) necessary to get our answers. So, what happened to all that enthusiasm once the kid moved on to the classroom? Jeffrey Wilhelm (and the vast body of research he cites) has some answers in his new must-read-if-you're-a-teacher book, ENGAGING READERS & WRITERS WITH INQUIRY.
Wilhelm's book is, hands down, one of the "meatiest" resources I've read. The initial chapters go over definitions and research to give you a foundation in inquiry's history and latest manifestations, but after that it is one practical strategy after another, each rich with examples from Wilhelm's own classes.
The heart of the inquiry method is questioning. Wilhelm teaches us to build "inquiry units" by creating "guiding questions" that students are actually curious about and want to answer during the unit. He also shows how these open-ended questions should be constructed (tips and pitfalls are included) so that they relate not only to your educational goals, but to the kids' lives and our shared world. Here we are putting the "fascinated kid" back into the "formerly bored student." Once you have the question(s), you move to designing the final product(s), followed by the creation of all of those formative tasks (from simpler to more complex) used to get to that final product (this is known in educational circles as "backwards planning").
As you get into the heart of the book, Wilhelm offers an array of strategies, including secret prompts; walkarounds; entrance and exit tickets; and before, during, and after questions. He gets into questioning schemes that take students up the ladder of complexity. Some of the schemes involve mentoring the students so that THEY ultimately create schematic questions for each other. So if you think you really learn something by preparing materials to teach it, consider the benefits in teaching your KIDS to do this for each other, thanks to your modelling and mentoring.
Among the questioning schemes Wilhelm covers are "The Questioning Circle," "ReQuest," and "QARs, or Question-Answer Relationships." Then he focuses on author-reader transactions by sharing two authorial reading strategies utilizing inquiry, one called "QtA, or Questioning the Author," and the other called "Hillock's Questioning Hierarchy," which is George Hillock's ladder of increasing complexity. Hillock's Questioning Hieraarchy does for reading what Bloom's Taxonomy does for education as a whole. If you're tearing your hair out trying to get kids to grow more adept at literary analysis, you've hit paydirt at last.
In the final chapter, Wilhelm demonstrates how all of these inquiry-based strategies can be used across the disciplines. He provides examples from math, science, and social studies, proving that inquiry's applications go way beyond the province of language arts. He also makes a point of providing examples from Grades 4 all the way up to high school. All of this work can be customized to fit the age-group you teach.
Bottom line: This is a great book for a community of teachers to read and discuss. I plan on buying copies for two of my fellow teachers (same discipline), so we can roll up our sleeves and go to work on making our units inquiry-based. I'm convinced it will show results and know that, once I've migrated to this method, my students will not only be happier, they'll be smarter and more enthusiastic. In fact, they'll be a lot like that little kid they once were -- the one who not only paid attention to stuff, she kept asking, "Why?" until she was fully satisfied.
Engaging Readers & Writers with Inquiry (Theory and Practice) OverviewWhat makes a good relationship? How does flight influence behavior for humans and birds? Is it ever permissible to lie? Reframing our units and lessons with questions such as these makes learning more exciting for students. Wilhelm debunks the myth that teaching through inquiry is hard. He shares practical, easy ideas for turning state standards into engaging authentic questions that propel students toward deep understandings. Includes sample lessons, discussion techniques, and questioning schemes for all the content areas. For use with Grades 4 & Up.

MySQL 5.0 Certification Study Guide ReviewQuite simply, this book should be on the shelf of anyone who intends to take the MySQL Certification exams.
The book was written by Paul DuBois, certainly the top author of MySQL related books. Paul's style is very readable and the book provides extensive coverage of the exam material.
In fact, the book is so extensive because it was written not only by Paul, but by Carsten Pedersen, certification manager at MySQL AB. The book was written by the people who created the exam, and it shows. I can tell you right now that if you read the certification study guide and know its content, you will pass the certification exam. There is not a question on the exam that is not covered by this study guide.
The exercises are good, though not always formatted the same as what you will encounter on the actual exam. Doing the exercises should reveal how well you understand a given topic in the guide.
Here's an overview of what the book covers:
* MySQL and MySQL AB
* MySQL Software
* Using MySQL Client Programs
* Data Definition Language
* The SELECT Statement
* Basic SQL
* Update Statements
* Joins
* Importing and Exporting Data
* MySQL Architecture
* MySQL Installation and Configuration
* Security Issues
* Optimizing for Query Speed
* MyISAM Tables
* InnoDB Tables
* Advanced Server Features
Finally, here is the best part about the MySQL Certification Study Guide: it's free. In the back of the guide is a voucher code for 25% off the cost of a certification exam, or roughly the price of the book. If you are serious about taking the MySQL Certification exams, you can't go wrong with this book.MySQL 5.0 Certification Study Guide OverviewThis is the official guide to passing the two MySQL certification tests for MySQL 5, the long-awaited major revision of MySQL. The number of MySQL certification exams taken has doubled in the last six months.Certcities.com lists the MySQL certification as one of the top 10 certifications to grow in 2005. MySQL professionals need a way to distinguish themselves from the vast majority of database administrators and developers. With more than 4 million active installations, MySQL is the world's most popular open-source database. Known for its speed, reliability and case of use, MySQL has become a low-cost alternative to expensive database systems such as Oracle, IBM and Microsoft. MySQL AB has aggressively improved the feature set of MySQL with MySQL 5, making it more suitable for enterprise-level applications and uses. The MySQL certification tests, available at over 3,000 PearsonVUE testing centers, is a key component of this enterprise growth strategy, establishing a base level of skills for database users, administrators and programmers.The MySQL Core Certification is aimed at the database user who wants proof of his or her abilities in such fundamental areas as SQL, data entry and maintenance, and data extraction. The MySQL Professional Certification test is designed for the advanced user who wants to prove his or her knowledge in such areas as database management, installation, security, disaster prevention and optimization. Both tests are thoroughly covered in the MySQL 5.0 Certification Study Guide. Written by Paul DuBois, the leading author of books on MySQL topics, and reviewed for technical accuracy by MySQL AB, this book is the fastest, most reliable way for MySQL users, developers, and administrators to prepare for either of the MySQL tests.

Illustrated C# 2008 (Expert's Voice in .NET) ReviewThis book is for programmers not individuals new to programming. This book covers C# 2008 pretty well in terms of explaining C# constructs such as how to write a class and explaining all the nuances of it. However, very little to no explanation is given for why you would want to use whatever the author is explaining--the big picture is pretty much missing. This book will work best for someone that already has a basic understanding of the .NET framework and programming and just wants to get up-to-date on C# 2008.

So, why should you read this book?
1) There is a plethora of examples and they all work. I don't think I have ever seen more sample code.
2) This is a deeply object oriented approach to C#, as it should be.
3) You are a programmer and want to get up-to-date on C# 2008--you are not looking to learn how to program.
4) The functional explanations of C# constructs are clear and complete. Hey, the guy has a degree in English and it shows.
5) The book is not terribly long. You will be able to finish it in a reasonable amount of time (726 pages).
6) I found many illustrations useful even though a few seemed redundant.
7) The author's treatment of LINQ was done very well and clearly.
8) Once having read the book and worked the examples you will have solid C# 2008 skills and be ready to extend your knowledge with other books and training materials.
9) It is fun and mostly easy to read.
Okay then what's not to like?
1) My biggest criticism is for the most part there is no discussion of how or why you would apply a particular C# construct being taught. For example, if you were learning to use an auto mechanic's tools you would learn how to use a box wrench, an open end wrench and an adjustable wrench but no idea of why you would choose one wrench over another for a particular task.
2) Inner Exceptions were not covered in the chapter on exceptions.
3) While almost all explanations of C# constructs were done well I felt events in Chapter 16 needed to be reworked--it just wasn't that clear.
4) No treatment of ADO.NET
5) No treatment of XML
Illustrated C# 2008 (Expert's Voice in .NET) OverviewC# is the most influential language on the .NET platform. As Microsoft's preferred language it has established a solid user base over recent versions and is drawing in developers from older technologies at an ever increasing rate.This book caters to that migrating audience. Developers already familiar with the basic concepts of a programming language (any programming language) often find the traditional compendium-based ‘beginner's guides' heavy and difficult to read as they spend a lot of time explaining concepts the reader already understands from their previous technology.Illustrated C# is an antidote to this. It packs the essentials of the C# language into just 600 pages, using an array of visual styles to provide a clear, fast, reference to the core of the technology. It's a book migrating developers can read in a day and grasp enough of the language to find their feet and move confidently onto the .NET platform.

Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI am an educator who recently had to overhaul and redesign a large-scale vocabulary instruction program. The information in this book was invaluable to me. I found it to be accurate, insightful, actionable, well-organized, and comprehensive.
As another teacher suggested, this book is not full of teaching activities, lesson plans, or word lists. (If you want that kind of book, you might try The Vocabulary Teacher's Book of Lists.) It is, however, full of big-picture facts and credible answers to important questions. It gave me confidence in my approach and helped me make many decisions. It also helped me plan teacher training.
If you are teaching in a traditional classroom setting with an established curriculum and an established set of practices, this book will probably not change the way you teach very much (although it might be interesting). However, if you are making larger-scale decisions about your vocabulary program, this book is a wonderful resource.Vocabulary Instruction: Research to Practice (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewThis highly practical book presents research-based approaches to building students' vocabulary and promoting a lifelong appreciation of words. Prominent researchers identify and discuss the multiple components of effective vocabulary instruction--teaching the meanings of specific words, teaching students strategies for learning new words on their own, and providing opportunities for word and language play. In every chapter, findings on the processes of successful vocabulary learning are translated into useful, effective instructional activities and techniques. Outlined are important new ideas for designing curricula and providing experiences that help students of all ages and skill levels gain access to the meanings of words that they read. Throughout, engaging classroom examples enhance the utility of this teacher-friendly resource.

C# 4.0 How-To ReviewThis book's title does not quite match its content but the book's introduction does indicate this. This is primarily a very good book of code and code algorithms in the .NET framework using C#. That being said the book does cover the changes made to the .NET 4.0 framework and to C# 4.0.
The code is very well written--it is beautiful well structured communicative code. The code in the book is sparsely commented; it is so well-written that few comments are needed. As I have said, in many ways the book is a book of code algorithms, for example, in chapter 5 Convert Between Number Bases, Convert a Number to Bytes, Determine if an Integer is Even, Determine if a Number is Prime, Count the Number of 1 Bits etc. All these code examples are useful algorithms but have nothing to do with .NET Framework 4.0 or C# 4.0 per se.
Despite what the Introduction says this is decidedly not a book for beginners. While they may be able to find useful algorithms here and there the content of the book is way too terse for a beginner to follow and they should turn to other books for a more complete introduction to C#. Chapter 8 on regular expressions will only be useful to programmers that already have the basics of regular expressions well-understood otherwise even the first few code examples will leave them scratching their heads. This book does not do any hand-holding but rather shows you in very practical ways how to use the C# language and the .NET framework.
I loved the code examples using dynamic types as this was the best example I have yet seen of using them in a practical straight-forward way. The code is the book is not just useful and terse but it is also elegant. For example, the ternary operator is used multiple times in the CompressFile project in Chapter 11 producing really elegant concise and clear code.
The book, not the down-loadable code, has a few errors and code bugs but very few, for example:
Pg 16 code won't compile since _x is private and therefore not accessible to the derived class
Pg 17 line Console.WriteLine(d.MyProperty().ToString()); wont compile
Pg 17 code wont compile, class Derived not inheriting from Base class--missing : base
DoSomething method in class Derived needs to be marked override not virtual to eliminate compiler warning
Pg 65 example code given says, "Because ArgumentNullException is a type of ArgumentException, and ArgumentException is first in the catch list, it will be called." This is not true as the compiler is smart enough to recognize the problem and results in a compiler error and therefore the code will not even run.
I recommend this book for intermediate and advanced developers. Read the book and study the code examples and you will:
1) Learn the .NET Framework 4.0
2) Learn C# 4.0
3) Add to your inventory of useful code algorithms
4) Improve your written code by reading and studying the elegant code in this book.C# 4.0 How-To OverviewReal Solutions for C# 4.0 ProgrammersNeed fast, robust, efficient code solutions for Microsoft C# 4.0? Complete Hindi with Two Audio CDs: A Teach Yourself Guide (Teach Yourself Language) ReviewAmong the many grammatical methods for learning Hindi, the Complete Hindi with two Audio CDs is particularly appropriate for students, working alone or, better, with a teacher in classrooms. There is a perfect mixture of grammar, readings and exercises, something often lacking in other methods. Except for few errors, the grammar and the sentences given as illustration are very helpful. The vocabulary too is rather common and wide (nor too sanskritized, neither too Urdu-oriented). Also, the CDs play an important role in the learning process, as not everybody learning Hindi is lucky enough to know Hindi speakers able to pronounce Hindi in a clear and appropriate way.
Last but not least, the price is perfectly correct.Complete Hindi with Two Audio CDs: A Teach Yourself Guide (Teach Yourself Language) Overview

Programming for the Absolute Beginner (No Experience Required (Course Technology)) ReviewSome will be quick to tell you that it's worthless to learn JustBASIC because you can't do much with it and you should instead learn Visual Basic. I started learning BASIC when I was about 5 or 6 (my dad is a programmer and taught me a lot!), but then never used it for a long time. 20 years later, I find myself with the desire to learn Visual Basic. I had told my dad that I wanted to learn Visual Basic to create some software for a non-profit organization that I run. I had said that I felt the best way to learn to program is to go through what I call "bootcamp" which is basically having to code EVERYTHING at first. You'll get a better grip on what's going on behind the scenes and the ability to better appreciate Visual Basic's IDE. He told me that when we went from Quick Basic (or qbasic) to Visual Basic, it was a relatively quick and easy, painless experience because so much of the code he'd been using still applied.
One of the things I wish that this book would do is give quizzes at the end. I can't even tell you how helpful those can be in making sure you understand the information. How else are you to know just how much you learned? Some of the games are a little (lot) goofy in this book, but they do what they're supposed to do: demonstrate the use of the code covered in that chapter as well as previous chapters. You also end up with a few programs that with a little modification could be quite fun to play! I'm working on a slot machine program that will pull up all of the pictures in the folder that the program is found in and display them as you win rather than basing it solely on how much money you have. That way I could cycle through family vacations, weddings, etc. in a more interactive way. While it might not be something I will use often, it's definitely one more Problem for me to try to figure out. Isn't that, after all, what programming is all about? Problem-Solving?
In the end, I'd have to say that this book is very good. Pick it up, learn it, master it and move on. You'll be a stronger programmer in five years if you keep to the simple basics of breaking down programs, using subroutines/functions to streamline your programs and using liberal use of comments all throughout the code. Definitely worth the money!Programming for the Absolute Beginner (No Experience Required (Course Technology)) OverviewWant to learn computer programming but aren't sure where to start? Programming for the Absolute Beginner provides a gentle learning curve in programming for anyone who wants to develop fundamental programming skills and create computer programs. The primary focus is on teaching the reader how to program using a free implementation of BASIC called Just BASIC. As such, the book focuses on developing programs that run on Microsoft Windows, but also presents programming principles that apply to different environments, including other operating systems and the Internet. Additionally, the book provides a solid foundation for advancing to different programming languages as you gain confidence in your newly acquired programming abilities. As part of the for the absolute beginner series, Programming for the Absolute Beginner teaches all the concepts through the creation of simple computer games, making the learning process much more fun and enjoyable.

Sign Language Made Simple: A Complete Introduction to American Sign Language ReviewThis book is great for beginners. It shows you alot of signs that would get you started and on your way. However, our class has learned that because all of the signs are not 'universal', we needed an ASL dictionary to go along with it. The discriptions of the signing actions need to be read a couple of times in some instances to understand what you are susposed to do. But is is good for a beginner to get the basics.Sign Language Made Simple: A Complete Introduction to American Sign Language OverviewSign Language Made Simple will include five Parts:Part One: an introduction, how to use this book, a brief history of signing and an explanation of how signing is different from other languages, including its use of non-manual markers (the use of brow, mouth, etc in signing.)Part Two: Fingerspelling: the signing alphabet illustrated, the relationship between signing alphabet and ASL signsPart Three: Dictionary of ASL signs: concrete nouns, abstractions, verbs, describers, other parts of speech-approx. 1,000 illustrations. Will also include instructions for non-manual markers, where appropriate.Part Four: Putting it all together: sentences and transitions, includes rudimentary sentences and lines from poems, bible verses, famous quotes-all illustrated. Also, grammatical aspects, word endings, tenses.Part Five: The Humor of Signing: puns, word plays and jokes.Sign Language Made Simple will have over 1,200 illustrations, be easy to use, fun to read and more competitively priced than the competition. It's a knockout addition to the Made Simple list.
