Guide to Deaf Ministry, A ReviewSampley's book is a good resource for beginning a deaf ministry. It contains a little information about sign language and deaf culture, and ideas for approaches to deaf minstry, including ASL translations of well-known hymns. If you are interested in starting a deaf worship, or adding sign language to your worship service, this book should be one of your resources. This is not a sign language resource, but a deaf ministry resource.Guide to Deaf Ministry, A Overview'What must be seen to be fully appreciated is (sign's) singular appropriateness for religious worship . . . . It is perhaps in the church service that the beauty of sign becomes most evident. Some churches have sign choirs. Watching the robed members sign in unison can be an awe-inspiring experience.' (Jerome D. Schein, Speaking the Language of Sign).DeAnn Sampley's book is about ministry to the deaf -- not only worship, but also nurture, service, and understanding. A Guide to Deaf Ministry reveals that serving deaf people involves cross-cultural communication. Those who would minister to the deaf must understand their needs, their language, their world. This book encompasses all these things, showing readers how to begin a deaf ministry, the resources that are available, what the deaf culture is like, and the special aspects of interpreting through sign in the church and worship settings. This is a book for all who seek to minister to deaf people, who live with them, or who number themselves among them.

American Sign Language the Easy Way ReviewFinally, a book that looks at ASL completely!! 'American Sign Language the Easy Way' is a must for the beginner ASL user. It provides comprehensive information about the signs themselves, the grammar of ASL, the importance of facial expression and the culture that surrounds native users. The conversational dialogues illustrated in the book give students useful and real-life scenarios of signs exchanged when interacting with other ASL users. When learning any oral language, grammar plays an important role. This is also true for ASL, a manual mode of communication that has its own unique set of grammatical rules that must be learned to converse effectively. Other books in ASL do not stress the importance of the grammar and facial expression. The Easy Way illustrates a wide variety of signs and the context for their use. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in learning ALL about American Sign Language, its form and culture.American Sign Language the Easy Way OverviewCurrent estimates have more than one million people using American Sign Language (ASL) in the United States, including approximately 450,000 deaf people. As growing numbers of deaf students are integrated into standard schools, the need for ASL interpreters continues to increase. Today, many public education systems offer an ASL course as a language elective in their curriculum, and this book--which can be used to teach both interpreters and the deaf--is an ideal text for such courses. Following a general introduction to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture, the author explains the use of "facial grammar" as a preliminary step to learning and understanding manual signing. Two succeeding chapters present the first eleven key grammatical rules of ASL. The 36 lessons that follow are divided into four groups that put these rules into practice and introduce additional rules. All lessons conclude with a practice session that reviews the lesson's material and progressively develops the student's proficiency in communicating in ASL. Following each of the four groups of nine lessons is a brief chapter dealing with Deaf Culture. The book's many line drawings illustrate approximately 720 ASL signs and their multiple meanings. The author has focused the text to make learning American Sign Language as easy as it is useful, both for instructors and students.

Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture Review"Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture," by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries, is a well-written, consistently interesting look at Deaf lives and communities. The introduction notes that both authors are deaf, so this book is very much written from the perspective of insiders. The copyright page notes that the book has a copyright date of 1988 and was in its 12th printing in 2000.
Although relatively short (134 + vii pages), this book is packed full of information. Among the topics covered: the difference between being "deaf" (lowercase) and "Deaf" (capitalized), the origins of American Sign Language, Deaf theater and poetry, the work of Deaf filmmaker Charles Krauel, controversies within the Deaf world, and more.
The authors maintain that Deaf people have an authentic language and culture. The book is lively and intelligent. I recommend that readers of this book also view the fascinating documentary film "Sound and Fury."Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture Overview

Signing: How To Speak With YOur Hands ReviewI use this book to teach Sign Language classes and think it is great. Dr. Costello has a thorough introduction to the language in the beginning of the book. The chapters are broken into "families" of signs, with clear illustrations. At the beginning of each chapter are three "basics" of ASL useage, which introduce the student to not only the vocabulary in the book, but also the way in which the language is used. It's a great book, and her background gives her every right to write a book like this. BTW, if you're interested in a children's Sign Language video, contact me. I am producing one that you may love!Signing: How To Speak With YOur Hands OverviewAmerican Sign Language is a wonderful silentlanguage of hands, face, and body that is rich withnuance, emotion, and grace. Signs of Sharing: An Elementary Sign Language and Deaf Awareness Curriculum ReviewBeing a sign language student in a major university, and a grandmother, I recently promised my granddaughter's class of first graders that I would teach them some basic signs from American Sign Language. I needed some visual representations of the signs that the children could understand, to help them remember. In our university library, I found Signs of Sharing, and was delighted. Not only were the sketches of the signers children themselves, but the lessons were grouped by various categories: school items, people, colors, animals, etc. Because it was set up more as a curriculum of signed English for a mainstream classroom, rather than straight American Sign Language, I had to adjust some of the signs I would show, but the basics were there. Not only were the illustrations cute and easy to understand, but the book provided followup activity sheets geared toward elementary-age children: matching the sign to the picture, color by number and sign, draw a picture of the animal the sign represents, and many more. Near the end, the book provided the perfect finishing touch, something every elementary child delights in, recognition for his or her efforts. It had a sample of a certificate for learning some basic sign language, with a place for the child's name. My desire is to find this book in a used bookstore, but it may be futile, since it would be difficult to give up such a valuable reference. Otherwise, I'll keep using the library's copy until I can get my own. If you want to teach sign language to children, it's a must-have!Signs of Sharing: An Elementary Sign Language and Deaf Awareness Curriculum Overview

American Sign Language in 24 Hours (Alpha Teach Yourself in 24 Hours) ReviewI'm so sorry to give this book only 3 stars, since it gives such a good introduction to ASL.
Given that few people buy only ONE book on a subject, I will say Alpha Teach Yourself ASL is definitely worth buying for its background information and discussion of deaf history and culture.
However, there is no way you can "teach yourself" signing using this book, as the photos are about tiny black and white thumbnails (about 2" x 1") that, if not outright blurry, are rendered indistinct by the printing process. It is SO hard to distinguish one minute hand gesture from another in this book!
Since the "teach yourself" aspect is the book's stated purpose, I do feel I have to give only 3 stars. There are better guides to teaching yourself actual signs, but few that are quite as comprehensive for guiding you through the world of sign.American Sign Language in 24 Hours (Alpha Teach Yourself in 24 Hours) OverviewA guide to the fourth most-commonly used language in the U.S. From the Alpha Teach Yourself series comes this self-paced, step-by-step approach to learning ASL. It teaches readers the unique syntax and grammar, the signs themselves, and the just-as-important subtle facial expressions and body movements.

Communicating in Sign: Creative Ways to Learn American Sign Language (ASL) (Flying Hands Book) ReviewHow-to books on ASL, like any other how-to book, must ultimately be judged on their practical results. Using that standard, Diane Chambers and her amazing book must receive the highest accolades.
Our company recently decided to teach ASL to all employees because almost five percent of our workforce was deaf, and there was a noticeable communication gap between us. In a company of 200 employees we had only two who were fluent in ASL. Without them to translate and act as a buffer, the uneasiness we already felt through our communication gap changed into outright panic as we became reduced to passing written notes back and forth. Our deaf employees never took part in any company activies, perfering to associate with themselves. Our personnel director asked if anyone would be interested in learning ASL and practically the entire company expressed such an interest.
As one of our ASL signers had ASL teaching experience, he volunteered to give the course. I suggested Diane Chambers' book and he used it as the text. Using one of our deaf employees to practice on, the class was held on company time for an hour a day. The chapters on ASL helped us to "speak" to them, and the chapter of deaf culture helped us to understand them. The quickest among us learned in a little over a week, the slower among us took three weeks. But all can, and do, make use of the ASL they learned and we have a much more happy, and more productive, office as a result.
Many other books of ASL have nicer covers and nicer illustrations. This one has nicer results.Communicating in Sign: Creative Ways to Learn American Sign Language (ASL) (Flying Hands Book) OverviewAmerican Sign Language (ASL) is the primary means of communication among the 22 million deaf and hard-of-hearing people in this country -- and those who live and work with them. Communicating in Sign revolutionizes the way ASL is taught by offering a beginning vocabulary based on the grammar and syntax of native signers and illustrating the eye contact, facial expressions, and body language that accompany hand and mouth movements. This breakthrough approach to mastering ASL, written for a general audience, is an invaluable resource for anyone eager to learn a language that is rapidly becoming part of our mainstream culture and also for educators, businesses, and organizations working to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Communicating in Sign places ASL within the context of Deaf culture and etiquette, delineating the components that contribute to its depth and richness.

The Baby Signing Book: Includes 350 ASL Signs for Babies and Toddlers ReviewI love the DVD set Baby Signing Time by Rachel de Azevedo Coleman, but my daughter and I were ready for more words. Since there are only two DVDs out so far, we needed another resource. This book is great! The first third of this book is broken into the following chapters:
1. A Quick Course in Baby Signing
2. Sign Language Development
3. Signing with Your Young Baby (0-6 mos)
4. " (6-12 mos)
5. " (12-18 mos)
and so on through 3 years
Also included "Signing with Your Special Needs Child" and "How to Sign and Sing." (Classic songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider, "Old MacDonald" and "The Wheels on the Bus"; and ones that are put to classic songs but that help reinforce your sign-vocab like the "Change Your Diaper Song" put to "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain.")
The rest of the book is a picture dictionary of words you will want to use when communicating with your child. Pretty much every word I have looked up in order to sing nursery songs is there. Sometimes I look for a word and it isn't there, but this doesn't happen often. And these are usually words that are not specifically geared for the little guys. It makes me hopeful that there will be a part two one day.
The pictures are very helpful and clearly drawn and labeled. I keep it in my nursery and refer to it whenever I am talking to my daughter and don't have a "key word" in my sign language knowledge.
If you are looking to get started with sign language, I recommend the DVDs I mentioned at the beginning AND this book. The Baby Signing Book: Includes 350 ASL Signs for Babies and Toddlers Overview

I am always looking for ways to suppliment what I learn at college, these books were AMAZING! I honestly think they are better thant he textbooks I used this past semester in a very well respected ITP program.
I would definetly recommend Michelle Jay's books to anyone who wants to learn "real" ASL, not just some watered down version of a mix of ASL and English.
I have purchased all 3 books available by Ms.Jay and can't wait to share them with my fellow students and my ASL professors.
Bonus :) Michelle is a CODA(Child of Deaf Adults), so she really knows her ASL/Deaf Culture!Don't Just Sign... American Sign Language The Easy Way ReviewI can't believe this is billed as a book you'd give a beginner who was learning ASL. I thought at first there must be a DVD somewhere to go along with the dialogues, but apparently, there isn't - so you're on your own with what is a fairly dense and complicated book about a fairly unusual and complicated language.
Definitely not the place to start your studies.
So why am I giving it four stars?
Because it's a GREAT book for me to pick up now. After four courses in person plus the Signing Naturally text plus DVD, I was ready for something that would help me jump to the next level, ie ASL grammar and classifiers. And this book is better than anything else I've seen for those two things, if nothing else.
Most people approach ASL from a "vocabulary" perspective - with a dictionary, a phrasebook, wordlist, etc. That's great for starting out, but not so good as you begin wanting to have more complex conversations where pure vocabulary won't fill in gaps like tense and more in-depth inflected forms of verbs. (If all you want is nouns, a word book is great!)
This book takes a different approach, presenting ASL grammar, in the form of basic sentence-types, first, right up front. It also presents very helpful information about facial expression, body shifting and other non-verbal components of ASL communication, along with valuable information about deaf culture - though I've known some deaf people who'd disagree with some of the information.
(for instance, they state unequivocally that anyone with hearing can never be part of the "Deaf" community (capital D), whereas I've heard elsewhere that CODAs (children of deaf parents) and some other hearing individuals may indeed be considered part of that community and culture)
As I mentioned, I'm now wrapping up my fourth course in ASL - Units 1-10 in Signing Naturally, which is a harder and more comprehensive text in some ways, but which has not so far provided as much of a rigourous and comprehensive overview of grammar and has also so far made little or no specific mention of the classifiers which can literally make up 90% of an ASL conversation!
With some experience and background in ASL, this book will help intermediate students take the vocabulary and other concepts they've learned to the next level - a level where they're actually able to carry on natural conversations using genuine ASL grammar.
I certainly wish it came with a DVD, but I found the images fairly clear (better than some I've seen) and have been able to make my way through it without assistance now that I'm fairly confident with my own (limited) abilities. But again, I wouldn't have been able to do that as a beginner, so go elsewhere for a beginner book... and then come back to this one!American Sign Language The Easy Way OverviewLearning ASL--American Sign Language--becomes easy with the help of this heavily illustrated book. This edition has been updated to include information on new technological developments and their related vocabulary. A useful guide both for the deaf and for those who teach or otherwise work among deaf men and women, this book opens with a detailed presentation of the 10 key grammatical rules of ASL. Also emphasized is the use of "facial grammar" as an important supplement to manual signing. Most of this book's contents are devoted to demonstrating and explaining signing. More than 800 line drawings clearly illustrate different words and then show how to combine them to convey statements. Here is easy access to the use of American Sign Language, a practical book for both the deaf and for those with normal hearing who have occasion to communicate with the deaf.

Baby Sign Language Basics: Early Communication for Hearing Babies and Toddlers, Original Diaper Bag Edition (Hay House Lifestyles) ReviewPositives:
1. uses ASL (much better than baby signs because useful throughout babies life)
2. excellent content, well written, easy to read (i think it even has more content than Garcia's book).
3. dictionary has 60 useful ASL signs
Negatives:
1. Very Small, tiny book! (though it is packed with information!)
2. Does not give signs in books content (you have to go to dictionary in back to see how to do the sign).Baby Sign Language Basics: Early Communication for Hearing Babies and Toddlers, Original Diaper Bag Edition (Hay House Lifestyles) OverviewWhy are thousands of hearing parents signing with their hearing babies? • talk sooner and have larger vocabularies

Signing also increases baby's self-esteem and gives parents a window into their child's mind and personality.

Baby-specific signing techniques, songs, and games are included to make learning fun and easy, and also open up two-way communication quickly. Sign to Learn: American Sign Language in the Early Childhood Classroom ReviewI am not an early childhood educator, but I am the parent of a toddler who is rapidly maxing out my sign language abilities. This book is perfect for us.
Unlike many sign language dictionaries which are intended for adults, this book includes just the vocabulary you use with small children: colors, numbers, shapes, family members, weather, feelings, behavior, and more.
Though I mainly bought the book for the signs, the lesson plans also provide some fun ideas for games to play with your child.
I am giving it four stars because some of the sign pictures are not very easy to interpret. They do have good descriptions accompanying them, but you have to already know what the "S hand" looks like, for instance. If you have some basic ASL familiarity, you can figure them out, but it might be hard for very inexperienced signers to read.
Overall, though, I highly recommend this for parents who are signing with their children!Sign to Learn: American Sign Language in the Early Childhood Classroom Overview
Everyone is talking about signing with infants. Sign to Learn is the first complete introduction to appropriate sign language curriculum for young hearing preschoolers. In this unique resource, teachers will learn how to integrate American Sign Language (ASL) into their classrooms to enhance academic, social, and emotional development, as well as to introduce children respectfully to deaf culture. Sign Language Made Simple: A Complete Introduction to American Sign Language ReviewThis book is great for beginners. It shows you alot of signs that would get you started and on your way. However, our class has learned that because all of the signs are not 'universal', we needed an ASL dictionary to go along with it. The discriptions of the signing actions need to be read a couple of times in some instances to understand what you are susposed to do. But is is good for a beginner to get the basics.Sign Language Made Simple: A Complete Introduction to American Sign Language OverviewSign Language Made Simple will include five Parts:Part One: an introduction, how to use this book, a brief history of signing and an explanation of how signing is different from other languages, including its use of non-manual markers (the use of brow, mouth, etc in signing.)Part Two: Fingerspelling: the signing alphabet illustrated, the relationship between signing alphabet and ASL signsPart Three: Dictionary of ASL signs: concrete nouns, abstractions, verbs, describers, other parts of speech-approx. 1,000 illustrations. Will also include instructions for non-manual markers, where appropriate.Part Four: Putting it all together: sentences and transitions, includes rudimentary sentences and lines from poems, bible verses, famous quotes-all illustrated. Also, grammatical aspects, word endings, tenses.Part Five: The Humor of Signing: puns, word plays and jokes.Sign Language Made Simple will have over 1,200 illustrations, be easy to use, fun to read and more competitively priced than the competition. It's a knockout addition to the Made Simple list.

Talking With Your Hands, Listening With Your Eyes: A Complete Photographic Guide to American Sign Language ReviewThis book is an excellent introduction to ASL and Deaf culture issues. There is a manageable number of basic signs and insets providing details about being deaf in a hearing world, information on famous deaf people, and technological advances useful for the deaf. The introduction also contains a concise history of deaf education. The author is extremely credible, which is something important to me when learning a new language!
From the instruction of a single deaf individual, I have developed a rudimenary knowledge of sign language: the alphabet, numbers, various greetings, some nouns and adjectives. This book has helped me to reinforce what I know, clean up the sloppy signing I had been doing, and learn new things. I have had trouble learning signs from books in the past because I would often miss something important. With this book, I've felt very comfortable with the new signs because of the format. The combination of specific written descriptions with pictures gives a very understandable way to learn new signs. The added bonus of mnemonic devices to remember which sign is which is very helpful. It's embarrassing to admit, but I kept confusing the signs for "yes" and "no" until I read the helpful hints in this book - not a good thing to get wrong!
There may be books with more words in them, but I would recommend this book for all beginners, and advanced beginners like myself. Once the signs here are learned (and as in my case cleaned up considerably), then start looking for more comprehensive works. I've been practicing about 30-100 words a night depending on how many I already knew and feel very confident that I'm finally doing them correctly.Talking With Your Hands, Listening With Your Eyes: A Complete Photographic Guide to American Sign Language Overview

American Sign Language Green Books, A Teacher's Resource Text on Grammar and Culture (Green Book Series) ReviewI went through an interpreter training program in the early 1980's, and this book was considered our 'bible' for the entire program. It is not meant as a stand-alone for learning ASL, but as an adjunct when taking classes on ASL or enrolled in an interpreter preparation program. Even though it was written many years ago, the content is still salient today and is an important resource on my bookshelf. As a practicing interpreter for 25 years, I frequently look at chapters when I am mentoring someone or forget how to explain something in particular. The information on Deaf culture is especially valuable as well.
The technical nature of the book is akin to explaining the linguistical nature of a spoken language, something critical to anyone learning ASL as a second language. I still see it used in programs today as a means of supplementing classroom lecture information. Only individuals serious about in-depth learning of American Sign Language will appreciate and benefit from this book. It is not fluff; learning the linguistic nature of ANY language requires dedication and time, and this applies to ASL as well. You cannot learn any language from a book, you learn it from associating with native users of that language. This book is excellent to use for the linguistic and theoretical basis for what you see and use when conversing with native users. You will not be disappointed if you use this in conjunction with classes and conversing with Deaf individuals whose native language is ASL. I highly recommend this book. It gives you a well-rounded education in the grammar of ASL in one handy reference. Forget 12 years of taking English classes from 1st. grade until you graduated high school. If you use this book as it is intended, it gives you all that information and more.American Sign Language Green Books, A Teacher's Resource Text on Grammar and Culture (Green Book Series) Overview

Sign Language Interpreting: A Basic Resource Book ReviewThis book is a good basic resource. I use it as a jumping off document for students who are considering interpreting as a field and want to read about it since the size is manageable and the language is digestible. It needs to be updated and cannot be used as a stand alone in the true instruction of a person who has CHOSEN the field.Sign Language Interpreting: A Basic Resource Book Overview
