Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (Theory and Practice) ReviewEach year teachers are amazed at how little their students know about grammar, usage, and correctness. "Why don't you know this?" they ask their students. "Didn't your teacher TEACH you this last year?" Blank expressions on their faces, the kids shake their heads "no," but a visit to last year's teacher brings indignation. "I certainly DID teach them (fill in the blank with your favorite grammar term)!" she says testily -- or quizzically, depending on her mood.
Sound familiar? It does to me, which is why I bought GETTING IT RIGHT. After years of frustration with "Teflon Grammatical Memory Syndrome" and with correcting a gazillion errors on a gajillion student papers, I looked to two familiar names -- Michael Smith and Jeffrey Wilhelm -- for answers. I wasn't disappointed.
Smith and Wilhelm start with conclusive research that the teaching of grammar in isolation does not work. Then they roll up their sleeves to show us what DOES work. Essentially they argue that it is a depth vs. breadth issue when it comes to grammar. Rather than trying to teach everything, teachers should focus on what's important and most likely to benefit the students in the long run. Their two justifications for teaching a term? "1. The term is so commonly used that teachers, texts, and tests presume that students know it. 2. The term is essential to being able to explain an important issue of style or correctness."
Boiling the vast world of grammar minutiae down to 16 basic terms/concepts, Smith and Wilhelm demonstrate creative ways to teach them based on their own experiences as well as those of student teachers who have worked under their tutelage. The practical ideas will be invaluable to teachers looking for new methods of reaching their kids in this most challenging of tasks. Prompts and handout examples are provided, along with samples of typical student errors and ways to help students learn from them.
Teachers will especially appreciate the section called "A Model Sequence: Learning to Proofread." Here the authors have mercy by telling teachers to free themselves of their shackles. Circling every error on every paper is NOT productive (unless improving your own editing skills while your kids learn nothing counts as "productive"). Instead, teachers should model proofreading and provide practice on carefully selected concepts, then serve as mentors by teaching specific skills and having students serve as their own editors by focusing on errors related to those skills only. Also, peer proofreading ideas that work are spelled out -- one in particular that involves creative use of the TV series CSI. Here it means "Correct Sentence Investigators" -- and yes, the proofreaders are "agents" and the errors are the "crime" (meaning you're about to witness the unlikely marriage of "fun" and "editing").
Buy it. Read it. Use it. Most importantly, it will help your students become better writers and self-editors; less importantly (but still worthy of your consideration!) YOU will feel a little more sane and a lot more effective when you send your kids off to the next grade where they might just surprise their new teacher by saying, "Participles? Yeah, we actually DID learn how to use THEM last year!"
Getting It Right: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Grammar, Usage, and Correctness (Theory and Practice) OverviewThe authors consider what grammatical concepts and correctness issues are most worth teaching andhow to teach those concepts and issues deeply. They explain how to understand the causes of students' errors, how to address those causes through authentic and engaging activities, and how teachers can work together to increase their effectiveness. They provide both guiding principles and plenty of examples that readers will be able to employ immediately For use with Grades 4 & Up.

Bantam New College Italian/English Dictionary (Bantam New College Dictionary Series) ReviewBy now I speak Italian well enough to be called, by Italians, fluent, and in fact I've given a few lectures in Italian. Anyone who works within the institution of education needs to read this. It is insightful and as unbiased as a work can be when dealing with the topic of students from cultural and ethnic backgrounds that have been educationally, politically, and socially marginalized (oppressed) within American society. Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy ReviewAgain, Fountas and Pinnell have helped teachers with their incredible insight on educating children. This time their help/advice/knowledge focuses on grades 3-6 but do not let that stop you if you teach another grade level. Their information on the essential components of a quality literacy program is true for any grade level. Fountas and Pinnell offer suggestions for effectively helping readers and writers who are not meeting "standard". These suggestions are specific and establish teaching practices that will help all readers and writers. They also give many mini lesson ideas and great literature connections that make a teacher's job easier. The appendices include forms for language/word study for both reading and writing and for literary assessment. Once again, their book ends with a valuable book list that is leveled. This book is an essential resource for all teachers.Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6): Teaching, Comprehension, Genre, and Content Literacy OverviewAuthors Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell have already helped hundreds of thousands of K-3 teachers engage, inform, and inspire early readers and writers. Now, with Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6), Fountas and Pinnell support teachers on the next leg of the literacy journey, addressing the unique challenges of teaching upper elementary students.
The product of many years of work with classroom teachers, Guiding Readers and Writers (Grades 3-6) is one of the most comprehensive, authoritative guides available today. It explores all the essential components of a quality literacy program in six separate sections:
Breakthrough to Literacy: Fountas and Pinnell present the basic structure of the language/literacy program within a breakthrough framework that encompasses the building of community through language, word study, reading, writing, and the visual arts. The framework plays out as three "blocks," which can be interpreted as conceptual units as well as segments of time within the school day. Specific information on how to structure a reading and writing workshop is provided. A practical chapter on organizing and managing the classroom will help you implement the principles in your own classroom.
Independent Reading: It is essential for students to develop interests and tastes as readers, selecting books for themselves every day. Fountas and Pinnell devote four chapters to independent reading, exploring how to structure teaching, minilessons, conferences, groupshare, and ways to use response journals as part of a reading workshop.
Guided Reading: The chapters in this section provide detailed information on planning for guided reading, dynamic grouping for effective teaching, and selecting, introducing, and using leveled texts. Fountas and Pinnell describe characteristics of texts related to difficulty and ways to organize texts in your classroom and school.
Literature Study: This section of the book discusses how to make students' experiences with literature as rich as possible. The authors offer specific suggestions for forming groups, guiding student choices, and establishing and teaching routines for literature discussion. A full chapter explores reader response and ways to help readers dig deep to uncover the meaning of texts.
Teaching for Comprehension and Word Analysis: This detailed look at the reading process explores both oral and silent reading, processes and behaviors related to comprehension, and ways to help students construct meaning. Included are twelve systems for sustaining the reading process and expanding meaning, plus discussions of the important areas of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.
The Reading and Writing Connection: These chapters showcase the instructional contexts - poetry, writer's notebooks, writer's talks, genre, content literacy, and student research - that support students in connected reading and writing. An informative overview of the characteristics of fiction and nonfiction will help you teach students to read and write a variety of genre. What's more, the authors suggest ways to help students learn the "genre" of testing and perform the kinds of reading and writing tasks that tests require. They also detail the continuous thoughtful assessment that guides all aspects of effective teaching.
A special feature appears at the end of each section, in which Fountas and Pinnell provide indispensable suggestions for working with struggling readers and writers.

100 Quickwrites: Fast and Effective Freewriting Exercises that Build Students' Confidence, Develop Their Fluency, and Bring Out the Writer in Every Student ReviewIf you only purchase one writing book, this is a winner. I have used it successfully with ninth grade remedial reading classes. The selections are short and interesting. I do give them more time than is suggested. I find that setting the timer for seven minutes works best for my classes. Students find it so much easier to express their thoughts on paper after reading or listening to selections in this book. This isn't a typical "story starters" book. The literature can be used as an introduction to genre studies, characterization, imagery, point-of-view, and literary analysis as well as for writing activities.100 Quickwrites: Fast and Effective Freewriting Exercises that Build Students' Confidence, Develop Their Fluency, and Bring Out the Writer in Every Student OverviewA rich collection of poems and short passages, perfect for middle school. Teachers read one of the powerful pieces aloud and invite students to respond to one of the freewriting suggestions. Teachers will be amazed at what students can write in 2-3 minutes! A quick and effective way to share models of strong writing and to get students writing and thinking . . . and a great way to focus attention at the beginning of class! For use with Grades 5 & Up.

Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition ReviewWhatever your reasons are for wanting to study Japanese, you'd do well to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Some people go for the spoken-only approach, but I've found that learning hiragana, katakana, and a lot of the kanji has definitely improved by retention of Japanese vocabulary. Many Japanese words include kanji (for example, the word "nihon" for Japan is the combination of the kanji for "sun" and the kanji for "origin"), so knowing what the words literally mean will help increase your understanding of Japanese overall.
After learning hiragana and katakana (the syllabaries of Japanese; much simpler than kanji, these are sound-based rather than meaning-based), you'll want to integrate kanji into your study of the language. That's where this book comes in. The 1,006 Essential Characters are listed by grade (1st through 6th). Each of these kanji entries includes: the stroke order, Japanese pronunciations, meanings in English, and three examples of the kanji contained in Japanese words. The 1,945 General Use Characters are listed by stroke-order (1 through 23); this includes all of the kanji of the 1,006 set plus those other general use characters not taught in 1st through 6th grade. A hiragana and katakana chart is also included, as well as an index sorted by pronunciation in the back.
This book makes a great reference for teaching yourself the kanji. Of course, you shouldn't expect to end up using this book alone for learning the kanji; it's more helpful for review and reference. There are plenty of resources on-line and several other books that would be helpful to use in conjunction with this book. For example, Kanji Pict-o-Graphix encourages mnemonic, visual memorization and Japanese For Everyone focuses on both written and conversational Japanese. However, this book serves the purpose it was created for: to provide clear and succinct entries for the Joyo kanji so you can learn how to write and understand them. It is an essential reference that every Japanese-language learner should own.Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition OverviewA best-seller trusted by beginning and intermediate students since 1959 and now in its third edition, this affordable study guide includes all 1,945 current joyo kanji. Detailed entries for all 1,009 "essential" kanji include stroke order, meanings, and pronunciation.

Awesome Hands-on Activities For Teaching Grammar ReviewThis book was extremely helpful to us in a 6th Grade Language Arts unit. this is filled with GAMES and ACTIVE ways to explore nouns, verbs, sentences - types, fragments, and run-ons.
Using the student's multiple intelligences, you actually make language interesting! You read the lesson idea beforehand, gather materials, and then lead the child or class through an activity.
I found it the perfect program to mix with dry sentence diagramming from elsewhere - to lift up the lesson. Afte such creative fun, my son didn't mind getting in front of a blackboard with me to diagram a few sentences.
Also, instead of just deciding if a verb was a verb, we now decide if it is "vivid" and look at nouns as specific or general - great for strengthening creative writing...and with activities across all learning styles, not lecture. That is hard to find in middle school language arts.
As a homeschooler, I did notice two teacher terms used (perhaps this is what the earlier reviewer was referring to) - mnemonics (rhymes for teaching) and rubric (like a short chart explaining something) - and some of the activities have to be adapted as they were designed for a group - still most activities didn't need any adaptation and I was totally pleased with the way my child responded to these active lessons.Awesome Hands-on Activities For Teaching Grammar Overview

I like that there are two sets of word searches for each week's words. One has the words listed only horizontally, while the other word search is much more challenging. I also like that there are cut-apart sheets listing the words, so the children can study using flashcards at home.
