Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way ReviewThis is broken down really well for you and is basically part book- part workbook. There are plenty of activities to take part in to help you learn this language. However it doesn't get a five because it doesn't come with a tape, though 4 are available to go with it for over 30 dollars. Also, you only learn present and imperative tenses, which may have been more complicated to learn but it should be in there if you want to concern yourself with it. It is really informative and amusing and holds your attention. It does this by keeping the lessons quick and to the point with a little humor here and there. Remember that Learning Italian and learning Italian for sake of a quick bout of tourism ''just enough'' to get by... very different things. As for just the bout of tourism, this is more than enough to get you by and would work great. As for grasping the whole language, if you really feel you need to... you'd not only need the past tense and so on, but you'd definetely need alot of cassettes for example and the ability to read whole paragraphs with ease. Not only is it compact enough to carry with you everywhere - at 3.75 x 6 x .5 inches it's small enough to carry in a purse or coat pocket, and if you're traveling really light, the accompanying phrasebook is even smaller, not much bigger than a folded up sheet of letter-sized paper - but it covers nearly every conceivable situation. I used it, along with the companion cassette tape, on my recent first-time trip to Italy and got along fairly well, whether I was buying a train ticket, asking for an all night pharmacy or trying to decipher a menu. In addition to the phrases and a small dictionary, the book also has handy little sidebars on stuff like tipping, sightseeing and selecting Italian wines. The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Italian Phrases, Second Edition ReviewExcellent guide. I've studied Italian with varying success for trips that I've taken to Italy. I found this book helpful in refreshing what I'd learned previously and for teaching me new aspects of the language. The instructive material is meant to provide a high degree of functionality -- words and expressions you will likely use -- and is presented in an easy-to-understand manner. There are a couple of pages on expressions to use in the bedroom -- I couldn't help but chuckle, imagining someone in the heat of the moment reaching for the book on an end table, scrambling to find the expression they need. I'm sure singles are grateful for that information, but for the rest of us, the book also covers everything you might need, from ordering food in restaurants to asking for directions or help in medical and emergency situations. The book goes into quite a bit of depth on verbs, which are of course critical to effective communication. There are several pages listing commonly used verbs and their conjugations in several tenses. Pretty neat stuff for a relatively small language guide. Easy Italian Reader: A Three-Part Text for Beginning Students (Easy Reader Series) ReviewDefinitely not for your beginner. I learned with book with a teacher, and I found it very useful. Also I would read some of the stories on my own -- it was a good way to see the grammar in action while at the same time learning new words, etc.
I enjoyed using this book, and if I ever got the chance to teach, I would use it myself.
So my assessment.........
If you are an absolute beginner, you can buy the book. But I'd wait until you were a bit more knowledgable before using it.
Intermediate students -- go for it. I think you will get a lot out of the book.

Beyond the Basics: Italian (Book and CD Set): Includes Coursebook, 4 Audio CDs, and Learner's Dictionary (Complete Basic Courses) ReviewOverall I think this is a very useful course for, as the title indicates, those who know the subject pronouns, the most common verbs (to be, to have, to eat, etc), present tense verb conjugation, and have a foundational vocabulary. It takes you through things like direct and indirect pronouns, future and past tenses, subjunctive tense, colloquial expressions and so on to an advanced level of understanding.
However, it will also be very helpful to those who already have a grasp on much of what it covers, because it is a good grammar review as well as a conversation improver. The lessons are designed with a dialogue lasting several minutes when spoken (translation follows each piece of dialogue), followed by notes regarding the dialogue, then a few grammar lessons, and finally a few sets of exercises using these concepts. The CDs consist of the dialogue spoken directly through, followed by (on the same track) the dialogue with pauses for repetition; the second track of each lesson is a reading of the italian sentences involved in the grammar lessons found in the text.
Opinions:
I have been using these lessons to improve my conversational "muscle memory", as I already knew a lot of Italian grammar; but it has also served to improve my understanding of grammatical pieces that I have been fudging. The set is bare bones, with the lesson book being a small, colorless and pictureless paperback. My greatest complaints would be with the CDs: (1) The part in which the dialogue has pauses for repetition is inconsistent in the amount they expect you to hear and recall; often the sentences are too long to repeat without reading from the book, and (2) this part of the dialogue with pauses follows the straight-through dialogue without a separate track number so it's hard to get to.
To get around these issues, I started to pause the dialogue after a certain number of words and repeat, then continue on.

The emphasis is on certain set phrases -- "Where is the bathroom?" "Everything is so interesting!", with weak coverage of grammar. The tapes feature an English phrase, followed by the Italian translation (repeated after a pause).
In the "section" on occupations, we are told how to identify ourselves as either a businessman or a lawyer. That breadth of coverage gives a pretty good idea of the value of this book.
