Beyond the Basics: Italian (Book and CD Set): Includes Coursebook, 4 Audio CDs, and Learner's Dictionary (Complete Basic Courses) ReviewOverall I think this is a very useful course for, as the title indicates, those who know the subject pronouns, the most common verbs (to be, to have, to eat, etc), present tense verb conjugation, and have a foundational vocabulary. It takes you through things like direct and indirect pronouns, future and past tenses, subjunctive tense, colloquial expressions and so on to an advanced level of understanding.
However, it will also be very helpful to those who already have a grasp on much of what it covers, because it is a good grammar review as well as a conversation improver. The lessons are designed with a dialogue lasting several minutes when spoken (translation follows each piece of dialogue), followed by notes regarding the dialogue, then a few grammar lessons, and finally a few sets of exercises using these concepts. The CDs consist of the dialogue spoken directly through, followed by (on the same track) the dialogue with pauses for repetition; the second track of each lesson is a reading of the italian sentences involved in the grammar lessons found in the text.
Opinions:
I have been using these lessons to improve my conversational "muscle memory", as I already knew a lot of Italian grammar; but it has also served to improve my understanding of grammatical pieces that I have been fudging. The set is bare bones, with the lesson book being a small, colorless and pictureless paperback. My greatest complaints would be with the CDs: (1) The part in which the dialogue has pauses for repetition is inconsistent in the amount they expect you to hear and recall; often the sentences are too long to repeat without reading from the book, and (2) this part of the dialogue with pauses follows the straight-through dialogue without a separate track number so it's hard to get to.
To get around these issues, I started to pause the dialogue after a certain number of words and repeat, then continue on.
