Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition ReviewWhatever your reasons are for wanting to study Japanese, you'd do well to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Some people go for the spoken-only approach, but I've found that learning hiragana, katakana, and a lot of the kanji has definitely improved by retention of Japanese vocabulary. Many Japanese words include kanji (for example, the word "nihon" for Japan is the combination of the kanji for "sun" and the kanji for "origin"), so knowing what the words literally mean will help increase your understanding of Japanese overall.
After learning hiragana and katakana (the syllabaries of Japanese; much simpler than kanji, these are sound-based rather than meaning-based), you'll want to integrate kanji into your study of the language. That's where this book comes in. The 1,006 Essential Characters are listed by grade (1st through 6th). Each of these kanji entries includes: the stroke order, Japanese pronunciations, meanings in English, and three examples of the kanji contained in Japanese words. The 1,945 General Use Characters are listed by stroke-order (1 through 23); this includes all of the kanji of the 1,006 set plus those other general use characters not taught in 1st through 6th grade. A hiragana and katakana chart is also included, as well as an index sorted by pronunciation in the back.
This book makes a great reference for teaching yourself the kanji. Of course, you shouldn't expect to end up using this book alone for learning the kanji; it's more helpful for review and reference. There are plenty of resources on-line and several other books that would be helpful to use in conjunction with this book. For example, Kanji Pict-o-Graphix encourages mnemonic, visual memorization and Japanese For Everyone focuses on both written and conversational Japanese. However, this book serves the purpose it was created for: to provide clear and succinct entries for the Joyo kanji so you can learn how to write and understand them. It is an essential reference that every Japanese-language learner should own.Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition OverviewA best-seller trusted by beginning and intermediate students since 1959 and now in its third edition, this affordable study guide includes all 1,945 current joyo kanji. Detailed entries for all 1,009 "essential" kanji include stroke order, meanings, and pronunciation.

Guidelines: A Cross-Cultural Reading/Writing Text (Cambridge Academic Writing Collection) ReviewI began using Guidelines (the first edition) in 1995 when it was essentially prescribed by an EFL colleague using it to teach another section of composition. I found it to be one of the best texts I've ever used for a comp class. The readings are genuinely engaging and students really felt motivated to reply in writing and with in-class discussion. Many years later, I'm no longer teaching composition, but keep this book on my shelf anyway since I never know when I will want to refer to one of the readings.

Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary ReviewI got this book during summer vacation in an attempt to make vocabulary instruction more interesting. I copied the first two pages for my 5th graders, we sang the original song, and then I had them tell me which words fit in which blanks. Then, we sang it again. In under 15 minutes, the kids new 7 new Tier 2 words! On top of that, we were all laughing our heads off about "Be compassionate to your web-footed comrades."
Each songs has several synonyms that would fit into the blanks. I whited out all but one synonym for each blanked out word. This made our instruction quicker and more focused. It also didn't overwhelm them with too many synonyms to remember. After this, I put the new words on note cards on a bulletin board and when the kids find these words in their daily reading, they can show me the word and then go up and put a tally on the note card.
Lots of fun, sticks in your head. It's a fool-proof way to learn words, and it's way more exciting than vocabulary books.Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary OverviewIntroduce students to new words and their meanings using favorite childhood songs and rhymes. First, students sing or recite a familiar song or rhyme and discuss what it means. Then, they replace some of its words with synonyms. Students can learn 10 to 20 new vocabulary words per song or rhyme. A fun yet meaningful way to build vocabulary! For use with Grades 3–6.

The Middle School Writing Toolkit ReviewIf you are a middle school teacher, this book is a must-have! I'm a fairly new teacher and this book has given me enough material to run my writer's workshop for months. There are tons of lessons and assignments here that you can use the day you get the book. The lessons are very straightforward and easy to use. Each writing strand has its own chapter and set of lessons that help you teach any of the major writing genres, including persuasive, literary essay, narratives, how to, and reports.
My school is moving toward differentiated instruction in writing, so this book is a blessing. Each lesson has four writing tasks associated with it, from easy to challenging ones. Not only that, but this book takes you step by step through the process of teaching a differentiated lesson to a heterogeneously grouped class. I think this alone is priceless!
There are tasks, rubrics, charts--everything you'd want in a book about middle school writing.
Highly recommended!The Middle School Writing Toolkit Overview
Designed specifically for all middle-school teachers, The Middle School Writing Toolkit has everything needed to get your writer's workshop up and running whether you're a language arts teacher looking for new writing workshop ideas or a subject-area teacher who wants to improve the quality of student papers.

Teachers in other subjects will find plenty of writing tasks on research, informational reports, biographies, and more to work into their daily curriculum, allowing for both subject exploration and writing mastery.
Fifty-seven writing mini-lessons and more than 200 differentiated workstation tasks, as well as time-saving forms, charts, and rubrics, make this a complete and useful resource for any middle-school classroom.
With The Middle School Writing Toolkit, you can transform your classroom into a successful writer's workshop and students of all abilities can master writing in any genre.

50 Writing Lessons That Work: Motivating Prompts and Easy Activities That Develop the Essentials of Strong Writing (Grades 4-8) ReviewAs a teacher of high-school students with learning disabilities I was very happy to find Ms. Rawlings book. Nothing is more difficult in writing than thinking of an idea and getting started. I found that my students would simply stare into space when asked to write, desperately trying to think of something to write about. Now I use the story starters as fun, creative ways to get the kids going. For the first time many of them want to write because the story starters are so compelling they want to start the story and see where it takes them. I also enjoy the sensible teaching tips from a seasoned pro in the classroom. The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-To-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) ReviewI wish I had had this book when I changed careers midlife and stepped into a 9th grade English classroom with little more than a textbook, my emergency credential, and a pair of knocking knees three years ago. Mary Lou Brandvik's book is aimed at new junior high and high school teachers and offers help in classroom management, lesson plans, and teaching writing and literature. Many books I've looked at or purchased tend to offer general ideas for instruction designed to work in a wide range of classes, but this book is truly aimed at the English teacher. Her book gave me what no one else did: a guide and a framework that would have helped me get through that first difficult year. It's filled with good ideas for writing assignments and novel (but functional) suggestions for student reading responses, group and individual projects, and speeches. A friend of mine complains about "quilt-making" activities taught at teachers' classes we've attended -- those vague, touchy-feely activities that don't move students ahead in skills. This book's activities are really linked to improving writing and reading. No paper quilts, thank heaven.Brandvik includes a section on working with others (parents, administrators, etc.) and a brief chapter on becoming a more effective teacher. Save the life of a new, desperate English teacher: Give him or her this book.The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-To-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) Overview

The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing (Essential Resource Library) ReviewWhatever your experience or expertise as a writer, you can always benefit from new techniques for fleshing out ideas, developing technique or revising work, not to mention brushing up on the rules of punctuation, grammar and style.
All of this and more is covered in tremendous detail in The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing.
Author Thomas Kane, who also penned other guides for Oxford, explains the premise for this guide:
"Obviously, there are limits: one cannot learn to write like Shakespeare or Charles Dickens. You can't become a genius by reading a book.
"But you don't have to be a genius to write clear, effective English. You just have to understand what writing involves and to know how to handle words and sentences and paragraphs. That you can learn. If you do, you can communicate what you want to communicate in words other people can understand. This book will help by showing you what good writers do."
The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing is divided into several parts which address a variety of issues. These include:
* The Writing Process
* The Essay
* The Expository Paragraph
* The Sentence
* Diction
* Description And Narration
* Punctuation
Many shy away from writing guides, such as this. They believe it's hard work to read and even harder work to apply. Not so with The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing. It is written in an authoritative but disarming manner, scattered with poignant quotes from some of the masters of the craft, which make it accessible to scribes of all levels.
It explains in simple layperson's terms the processes and mechanics of writing. The chapters also feature practical exercises for workshopping ~ an excellent way to understand and apply what you've just read.
I particularly liked the `Drafts and Revisions' chapter, which offered some solid techniques and advice on refining work. Also the examples of style and technique from literary greats, such as Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, E.B. White and Annie Dillard.
Another excellent writers' guide from Oxford. This is an essential reference for new and veteran wordsmiths. Newcomers will gain comprehensive instruction in the art of writing, including techniques for encouraging creativity, organizing thoughts and clear writing. As for experienced scribes, this guide will remind you what you've forgotten and, most importantly, it will help you add that `something missing' to your writing.

A Writer's Reference with Resources for Multilingual Writers and ESL ReviewThe book is useful but unnecessarily expensive. You can find most of this info on the internet for free, and the only reason it sells as well as it does is because it is required by many college instructors. The 7th edition features new rules to various topics, like Works Cited Pages. They haven't been changed in years, but apparently now italicizing is IN and underlining is OUT. What a waste.A Writer's Reference with Resources for Multilingual Writers and ESL OverviewWith an entire tabbed section for nonnative speakers of English, A Writer's Reference for Multilingual Writers offers additional exercises, study skills help, advice about meeting college expectations, and sample student writing by a second-language student.

I had absolute no problem with my purchase. I'm a college student and I saved so much than if I was to buy this book on campus. Thank you very much for your excellent service, you will be seeing me buy my next semester books from here.A Writer's Resource (spiral-bound) 2009 MLA Update, Student Edition OverviewAs we wrote the first edition of The McGraw-Hill Handbook, our students were in our minds, acting as our chief consultants. We knew that their perspectives on college life were different from those of previous generations of students, and so were their expectations. We understood that they needed a handbook for the twenty-first century, with state-of-the-art resources on writing, researching, and graphic design. They might be using a handbook in an English composition class at 9:00 AM, but at 10:00 AM they might be preparing PowerPoints for a speech course, and at 11:00 AM they might need the handbook to help with a history assignment. More than any other textbook, their handbook was their guide, not just to writing, but also to learning in college. In revising the second edition, we have endeavored to make it an even stronger and more varied resource for achieving excellence in the ever-changing digital environment that students confront in college.

The Grammar Teacher's Activity-a-Day: 180 Ready-to-Use Lessons to Teach Grammar and Usage (JB-Ed: 5 Minute FUNdamentals) ReviewI am currently a substitute teacher and keep this book in my bag...I have used it a number of times when the regular teacher has not left me adequate lesson plans.
