Teaching Boys Who Struggle in School: Strategies That Turn Underachievers into Successful Learners ReviewThe author mentions the innate differences between boys and girls, but does not dwell on them. Rather, she sees a wide range of behaviors among both boys and girls. She believes that boys often don't do well in school because they consider learning "white" and "feminine", because they have a fear of failure, etc.
She suggests that teachers need to develop a trusting relationship with these students, so that they overcome their fear of failure and inadequacy. Troubled boys want to know that they matter, that they are welcome in the classroom, etc. Consistency in enforcing discipline is important, or else the boy may see the teacher as weak. Communication with the boy should be positive, and not critical of performance.
To overcome the emotional immaturity of certain boys in impulse control, the teacher should give them a warning about an upcoming change in activity. This will make it easier for the boys to transition to that activity. The teacher should also give effective directions, as tabulated on page 120 of the book.
Although this book is not about cooperative learning, Cleveland describes several forms of it. It allows boys to socialize in a positive learning environment.

Teaching Boys Who Struggle in School: Strategies That Turn Underachievers into Successful Learners OverviewTeaching Boys Who Struggle in School: Strategies That Turn Underachievers into Successful Learners responds to growing concerns about a crisis in boys academic achievement. Kathleen Palmer Cleveland seeks to help K 12 educators cut through the hype to get at the real problem: who is underachieving, why are they struggling, and how can educators respond to these students needs in new and productive ways?Cleveland presents findings from four large-scale studies about how boys learn best and combines these findings with insights about ongoing social and learning-style factors that affect learning in the classroom, plus lesson plans and anecdotes from real teachers working across all grade levels and subject areas.Cleveland s Pathways to Re-Engagement represents the culmination of her substantial research and personal experience. A flexible and practical framework for decision making in the classroom, the Pathways model seeks to* Replace the underachieving boy s negative attitudes about learning;* Reconnect each boy with school, with learning, and with a belief in himself as a competent learner;* Rebuild learning skills that lead to success in school and in life; and* Reduce the need for unproductive and distracting behaviors as a means of self-protection.Each aspect of the Pathways to Re-Engagement model offers educators a way to move underachieving boys from a position of weakness toward one of strength--giving them the tools to succeed in school and beyond.

Comprehension Strategies for English Language Learners: 30 Research-Based Reading Strategies That Help Students Read, Understand, and Really Learn ... Nonfiction Materials (Teaching Strategies) ReviewThis text is a good addition to an individual teacher's bag of tricks or a school's professional library. Margaret Bouchard has taken many well-known reading, writing, and thinking strategies (and has cited her sources), adapted the strategies especially for use with English Language learners, explained the theory behind their use, and where appropriate, has provided a worksheet to copy. Although most of these strategies can be used with ELLs at any age, the worksheets themselves are appropriate only for younger children, although they could easily be readapted for older students. The main advantage of this text is that although most of these strategies are well-known, having them in one place and having them validated as useful for ELLS is a significant help to teachers who have no ESL or Bilingual help in their school or district. The strategies are not a panacea, however, and some require considerable text or curriculum adaption by the classroom teacher. But -- this should be a realistic expectation of teachers with ELLs in their classrooms. Although the learning theory on which the strategies are based is briefly explained, teachers at the secondary level who are not as familiar with reading theory might not find the backgrounding adequate and might come to feel that these strategies could not make a sufficient dent in the enormous amount of material taught at the high school level.Comprehension Strategies for English Language Learners: 30 Research-Based Reading Strategies That Help Students Read, Understand, and Really Learn ... Nonfiction Materials (Teaching Strategies) OverviewWith this collection of research-based-and practical-strategies, mainstream classroom teachers can help ease the academic challenges English language learners often face by harnessing the opportunities provided by learning language in a meaningful context. Each strategy lesson identifies the level for which it is best suited and the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Goals and Standards it meets, as well as key supporting research, questions to prompt reflection, and more. For use with Grades 4 & Up.

Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability ReviewWhen I saw the price for this textbook, I thought it was a joke. My options were paying an average of $87. But I got it for under $10. When it arrives it was in the best condition. I could've asked for anything better. It was hard to tell that this interactive textbook/workbook was ever used. Being a proscrastinator, I was also pleasantly surprised that it arrived to my home in less than 72 hours. Thanks again.Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability OverviewThis new Fourth Edition contains many lesson plans that cover a variety of subject areas and grade levels (1-12), as well as action research activities that investigate the various dimensions of teaching. Many of the lesson plans are written by actual classroom teachers, and all of them have been examined by practicing teachers. More than simply a "how-to" manual, it is designed to help the teacher or teacher education student teach from a multicultural perspective. Each lesson plan offers a "Before" version (the lesson as it is usually taught) and an "After" version (how the lesson can be improved to "turn on" learning). A discussion explaining why the changes were made follows each lesson plan.

A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers ReviewLindemann's book is well organized and developed, and provides many practial examples of the theories she discusses. If you had to pick one book to use for a teaching comp class, this would be the one to pick. For a more in-depth study, combine this book with Irene Clark's "Concepts in Composition," which is a more theoretical and historically-based explanation of composition concepts.A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers OverviewFrom answering the question "Why teach writing?" to offering guidance in managing group work and responding to assignments, A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers provides a comprehensive introduction to the teaching of writing. Now in a fourth edition, this remarkably successful book features a new chapter by Daniel Anderson on teaching with computers and adds updated material on invention, intellectual development, and responding to students' writing. Describing in straightforward terms the cross-disciplinary scholarship that underlies composition teaching, it opens with chapters on prewriting techniques, organizing material, paragraphing, sentence structure, words, and revising that show teachers how to lead students through composing. Sections on writing workshops, collaborative learning, and instructional technology reflect current views of writing as a social interaction. Chapters on rhetoric, cognition, and linguistics explain theoretical principles that support classroom practices and make teachers' performances more effective. Treating both the theory and practice of writing, this classic book encourages teachers to adopt the methods that best meet their students' needs and to develop a style of teaching based on informed decisions. It provides an extensive updated bibliography--including useful Web sites as well as important books and articles--and an updated table of important dates in the history of composition. A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers, 4/e, offers both prospective and seasoned writing teachers convenient access to influential scholarship in the field and inspires them to examine what it means to teach well.

Word Matters: Teaching Phonics and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom ReviewClear, to-the-point, and full of great ideas to help those who work with elementary children learning to read. The feature I like best is the built in professional development suggestions to use the book within a building, a grade or a district as an inservice tool. Don't miss this one!Word Matters: Teaching Phonics and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom Overview In 1996, Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas presented Guided Reading, the most comprehensive guided reading resource ever published. Hailed for its practical, systematic approach, the book showed hundreds of thousands of teachers how to address the needs of the whole classroom as well as individual readers. Now, with the publication of Word Matters, Pinnell and Fountas offer K-3 teachers the same unparalleled support, this time focusing on phonics and spelling instruction. Word Matters presents essential information on designing and implementing a high-quality, systematic literacy program to help children learn about letters, sounds, and words. The central goal is to teach children to become "word solvers": readers who can take words apart while reading for meaning, and writers who can construct words while writing to communicate. Where similar books are narrow in focus, Word Matters presents the theoretical underpinnings and practical wherewithal of word study in three contexts: word study that includes systematically planned and applied experiences focusing on the elements of letters and words writing, including how children use phoneme-grapheme relationships, word patterns, and principles to develop spelling ability reading, including teaching children how to solve words with the use of phonics and visual-analysis skills as they read for meaning. Each topic is supported with a variety of practical tools: reproducible sheets for a word study system and for writing workshop; lists of spelling minilessons; and extensive word lists, including frequently used words, antonyms, synonyms, and more. Armed with these tools-and the tried-and-true wisdom of Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas-teachers can help students develop not just the "essential skills," but also a joyful appreciation of their own literacy.

The Reading Detective Club: Solving the Mysteries of Reading/A Teacher's Guide ReviewDebbie Goodman has created a motivating way for intermediate students to discover reading processes. Debbie, the daughter of Ken and Yetta Goodman, has written several well designed activities to help students do detective work to discover how our brains work when we read. As an intermediate reading specialist, I have used this book with fourth grade struggling readers and their teachers. The lessons teach themselves by allowing students to discover, discuss, and confirm. These activities have helped teachers to learn about cue systems and strategies as well as their students. The Reading Detective Club: Solving the Mysteries of Reading/A Teacher's Guide Overview "Readers are a lot like detectives," says Debra Goodman. "We use clues from the author's text. We use strategies to try to figure out what's going on. We make up theories to solve the mystery of each text, and we check out our theories as we read along." Thus, Goodman invites us to join The Reading Detective Club, a unique new book of "mystery cases" that are actually reading strategy lessons for third through eighth graders and their teachers. Here are two engaging books in one: a smart professional book for teachers and a fun "nonworkbook" for students. The teacher section offers a comprehensive overview of the reading process, with step-by-step instructions for sponsoring a Reading Detective Club, analyses of each case, and discussions of topics such as second-language readers and dialect variations. The student section features a series of reproducible mystery cases presented by student-detectives Jacob, Michele, and Scott. Children are encouraged to solve cases - and come to understand their own approaches to literacy - by exploring the meaning clues, language (grammar) clues, and graphic clues in printed texts.Central to The Reading Detective Club is the importance of miscue analysis as a vital assessment tool. Teachers will appreciate the accessible, practical advice for appropriating miscue analysis in the classroom. Most of all, students will be reassured and inspired to learn that the detective work they do to understand language is proof that they are already smart thinkers and readers.

Reading the Web: Strategies for Internet Inquiry (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) ReviewI was required to read this book for a class I was taking. At first glance I thought it would be "just another textbook." However, I quickly realized what a goldmine of information and guidance the book delivers. It takes a huge concept and breaks it down into readily usable applications. Too often I will find great theory resources, but they will lack the day-to-day nitty gritty of application. This book has the theory, the steps, the handouts, even the lesson plans. I found the readability engaging and direct. Great resource and great introduction into the miasma of inquiry-based research and 21st literacy skills. Thank you, Drs. Eagleton and Dobler, you have given me a launch into a whole new curriculum!Reading the Web: Strategies for Internet Inquiry (Solving Problems in the Teaching of Literacy) OverviewPacked with ideas and instructional activities that cut across all content areas, this engaging book provides a comprehensive framework for promoting vital Web literacy skills in grades 3-8. It is a writing supplement with tons of reproducibles on subjects and ideas for things I hadn't even thought of - like a story map to plan the sequence of events in the story or a character web to map out how the young author will develop story characters. English Language Learners Day by Day, K-6: A Complete Guide to Literacy, Content-Area, and Language Instruction ReviewThank goodness for this resource! The book is a practical guide for ESL teachers, as well as all teachers, who have wondered for years how to teach the student who is a new English language learner. Celic combines all the research-based, best practices that immerse new English learners in language, vocabulary, background knowledge and make them strategic learners. I especially love the chapter on developing academic language. So many ELL students develop social language and sound like they should be good students, but have not developed the academic language they need to be those successful learners. ESL teachers can take this resource and use it immediately. However, it's a resource that all teachers can use. The strategies are simply good teaching and apply as much to all students as to the ELL student. A great find!!! maryland teacherEnglish Language Learners Day by Day, K-6: A Complete Guide to Literacy, Content-Area, and Language Instruction OverviewChristina Celic s foundational guide provides an authentic and meaningful answer to the question, How can I teach the grade-level curriculum in a way that makes my English language learners successful? The first chapters guide you through the process of: setting up a classroom that supports English language learners in learning language and content launching appropriate instruction and assessment during the first days of school establishing schedules, routines, rules, and procedures sensitive to English language learners Ensuing chapters help you understand how to: integrate literacy and content-area instruction during the school year teach academic language throughout the curriculum differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of English language learnersEnglish Language Learners Day by Day, K-6 recognizes the challenges teachers face when working with English language learners, and responds with realistic and practical solutions. Drawing on a rich blend of research findings and classroom experiences, this bible on ELL instruction will help mainstream and preservice teachers, as well as ESL and bilingual specialists, better understand how they can make their classrooms a place where English language learners thrive. "My hope is that this book provides you with a practical foundation for addressing your own English language learners academic and linguistic needs, transforming your classroom into a place where they re successful, motivated, and confident in their abilities.
