The Best of History Web Sites ReviewI'm sure that anyone considering purchasing this tome has already become familiar with the remarkable "Best of History Website." The question that immediately comes to mind is why the oxymoron of a book about websites? There are three reasons: One is the comfort of reading through a book rather than scanning webpages. Anyone who flips through the 400+ pages will immediately be drawn in by the breadth and depth of the sites reviewed. The PBS, the BBC, the Library of Congress and The New York Times websites are well represented, but there are also many obscure, yet fascinating, sites included. The extensive index is a shortcut to discovering hidden gems. The second value of this book is as a step in the conversion of the technophobic social studies teacher. I brought the book to my faculty meeting and passed it around. It was wonderful to hear the little gasps of excitement from some of the, shall we say, mature teachers who didn't know that there were so many wonderful sites on Mesoamerica or The Great Depression. One colleague tried to abscond with it! The third value of this book is the excellent chapter "Integrating History Web Sites in the Classroom." This section summarizes the best-practice use of the internet in the classroom and gave me a number of ideas of ways to make better use of computers in my class. The Best of History Web Sites Overview

The Portable MLIS: Insights from the Experts ReviewI recently completed my MLIS and used this book as one of many tools to review for my comprehensive exam. I found the text most useful in summarizing and highlighting ethics issues, especially those discussed in the ALA's labyrinthine Intellectual Freedom Manual. Still, if you're looking for depth and substantial context, you're better off using the authors' original works (especially Rubin and Taylor). If you're thinking about going to library school, this is a good overview of what you'll be learning in the core courses. You may find it to be very relevant material, especially if you've never worked in a library before (which, personally, I HIGHLY recommend before you commit to a graduate school program). Overall, I'd recommend checking this book out from the library before committing to buying it at such a steep cover price. The Portable MLIS: Insights from the Experts Overview

Introduction to Technical Services (Library and Information Science Text Series) ReviewProduct arrived quickly and was as described. The text itself is a bit dry, but thoroughly explains the details of cataloging, acquisitions, etc.Introduction to Technical Services (Library and Information Science Text Series) Overview
Used in library schools worldwide, this standard text provides students with a thorough understanding of technical services. Updated and expanded, the eighth edition further emphasizes the rapidly changing environment in which technical services are conducted.

The book covers all aspects of the field-from acquisitions to managing the cataloging department-with five new chapters. "Technical Services Issues" includes material related to physical space needs; "E-resources Issues" examines how the growth of e-materials impact technical services work; "Copy Cataloging" reflects the ever increasing need to be more efficient and also to save limited funds for technical services activities; "Overview and Decisions" addresses the issue of why and how the local OPAC has become a gateway to the universe of knowledge; and "Processing Materials" covers the activities involved in making sure items that go into a library's collection are properly identified as belonging to the library and where the item is physically located in the collection. All other chapters have been extensively rewritten and updated to reflect 2010 technical service functions and activities. Complete with helpful illustrations, statistics, and study guide questions, this text is a must for library and information science students!

Using the Engineering Literature (Routledge Studies in Library and Information Science) ReviewThe coverage in this reference is very thorough and covers all the disciplines of engineering. The sources include dictionaries, handbooks, textbooks, journals, online databases, online subject sites and associations. This resource will aid anyone who is starting out in an engineering discipline and the experienced engineer who needs help on a particular subject. I would recommend it for academic, special libraries and large public libraries where there is an interest in engineering. The only caveat I have is that it is already out of date. There are newer editions of some of the recommended sources available.Using the Engineering Literature (Routledge Studies in Library and Information Science) OverviewThe field of engineering is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, and there is an ever-growing need for engineers to investigate engineering and scientific resources outside their own area of expertise. However, studies have shown that quality information-finding skills often tend to be lacking in the engineering profession. Using the Engineering Literature is a guide to the wide range of resources in all fields of engineering. The information age has greatly impacted the way engineers find information. While print is still important, resources are increasingly being made available in electronic formats, and the Web is now a major resource. Engineers have an effect, whether direct or not, on almost all aspects of our lives, and it is vital that they find the right information at the right time to create better products and processes. The book takes an engineering sub-discipline approach, detailing those resources that are most important for the practicing engineer and the librarians who work in engineering. Each chapter provides a short history and description of the discipline, then lists the most important resources by format: handbooks, dictionaries, texts, journals, websites, etc. Most references include a short annotation. The authors of each chapter are well-known, experienced librarians or faculty in the appropriate engineering discipline, sharing their expertise and experiences with engineering information. This is a guide to resources that are often unknown to the practicing engineer. It also serves as a textbook for the library school student or new engineering librarian, as well as a time-saving handbook for current librarians. The arrangement of materials provides easy and logical access to evaluated resources in engineering and supporting disciplines, providing a tool that is useful in reference services and collection development.

Organizing Audiovisual and Electronic Resources for Access: A Cataloging Guide (Library and Information Science Text Series) ReviewThis is an assigned textbook for one of my Library & Information Science courses. Overall, I have liked the book so far. I think Hsieh-Yee provides clear explanations of the components of cataloging the resources, and there are lots of real life examples complete with MARC coding and AACR2-compliant data entry.
My only complaint with the book is the number of typos. Given that library cataloging requires diligence and great attention to detail, it is frustrating that Hsieh-Yee did not given the same attention to her book. There are (mostly minor) cataloging mistakes in some of the examples. For novice catalogers, these mistakes could be confusing. For advanced catalogers, they are simply frustrating.Organizing Audiovisual and Electronic Resources for Access: A Cataloging Guide (Library and Information Science Text Series) Overview
