Assessment First: Using Just-Right Assessments to Plan and Carry Out Effective Reading Instruction ReviewThis is a well organized and easy to implement assessment tool. The book is divided into chapters that focus on the five components of reading, i.e., phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
Each chapter provides samples and an analysis with plans. The book also has step-by-step instructions along with forms, charts, and tools for organizing the information.
The subtitle is right on the money--using just-right assessments to plan and carry out effective reading instruction.
Bravo to Deborah White for creating a tool that teachers can actually use without having to rewrite the book.Assessment First: Using Just-Right Assessments to Plan and Carry Out Effective Reading Instruction OverviewTo maximize the impact of your teaching, follow the assess-plan-teach model, teachers are told, yet they receive little support in putting this model into action. Finally, here is an indispensable guide that explains how to make every minute of primary reading instruction count-starting with assessment. In clear and friendly language, reading specialist Deborah White explains how to choose and use assessment tools to pinpoint students' needs in comprehension, fluency, phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary. White then shows how to use these results to plan effective instruction. She provides dozens of high-interest activities for building the targeted skills. For use with Grades 1-5.

Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability ReviewWhen I saw the price for this textbook, I thought it was a joke. My options were paying an average of $87. But I got it for under $10. When it arrives it was in the best condition. I could've asked for anything better. It was hard to tell that this interactive textbook/workbook was ever used. Being a proscrastinator, I was also pleasantly surprised that it arrived to my home in less than 72 hours. Thanks again.Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability OverviewThis new Fourth Edition contains many lesson plans that cover a variety of subject areas and grade levels (1-12), as well as action research activities that investigate the various dimensions of teaching. Many of the lesson plans are written by actual classroom teachers, and all of them have been examined by practicing teachers. More than simply a "how-to" manual, it is designed to help the teacher or teacher education student teach from a multicultural perspective. Each lesson plan offers a "Before" version (the lesson as it is usually taught) and an "After" version (how the lesson can be improved to "turn on" learning). A discussion explaining why the changes were made follows each lesson plan.

Assessing Speaking (Cambridge Language Assessment) ReviewThis is a great 5 star book for MA or EdD researching fellows whom want to look as cases that have been presented to assess speaking in language teaching. Speaking, as an ELL, is viewed from various perspectives, chapters are:

3 Speaking tasks
4 Speaking scales
5 Theoretical models
6 Developing test specifications
7 Developing speaking tasks
8 Ensuring a reliable and valid speaking assessment
So, lets be honest here. This book will probably not make the NYTimes best selling list, but as someone interested in language teaching and the assessment of speaking this book could become your best friend for a few months.Assessing Speaking (Cambridge Language Assessment) OverviewSpeaking is a central yet complex area of language acquisition. The assessment of this crucial skill is equally complex. This book takes teachers and language testers through the research on the assessment of speaking as well as through current tests of speaking. What English Language Teachers Need to Know Volume I: Understanding Learning (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series) ReviewThis book is quite useful for a teacher new to the ESL/EFL field who might feel underprepared pedagogically. It is also a good review for a new teacher to see if he/she has adequate foundational knowledge. The book mainly has strengths with very few weaknesses.
I have not seen Vol. II yet, but I think it would be worth it because it deals with the application of the concepts in Vol. I. Together they would cover a lot of breadth on the subject with a reasonable amount of depth. What English Language Teachers Need to Know Volume I: Understanding Learning (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series) OverviewDesigned for pre-service teachers and teachers new to the field of ELT,Volume Iand its companion textbook, Volume II,are organized around the key question: What do teachers need to know and be able to do in order for their students to learn English? All English language teachers need to understand the nature of language and language learning, and with that understanding they need to be able to facilitate student learning.Volume I, on understanding learning, provides the background information that teachers need to know and be able to use in their classroom:the characteristics of the context in which they workhow English works and how it is learned their role in the larger professional sphere of English language education Volume II, on facilitating learning, covers the three main facets of teaching: planninginstructingassessing. The focus throughout is on outcomes, that is, student learning. The texts work for teachers across different contexts (countries where English is the dominant language, one of the official languages, or taught as a foreign language); different levels (elementary/primary, secondary, college or university, or adult education), and different learning purposes (general English, workplace English, English for academic purposes, or English for specific purposes).
