It has hints and tips to help with facing the hurdles of being a trainee such as difficult lessons (and students) to actual class prep work. It is well set out and has a depth to it that makes even the most complex understandable. There are many 'sample' teaching methods to study as well as important self-test sections. 250 Essential Kanji for Everyday Use, Volume 1 ReviewAs the negative review on this site points out, this book is not a complete Japanese course. In effect, it assumes that you are studying (or already know) first year Japanese, but as a guide for learning Kanji, it is exceptional. Unlike other kanji texts I have seen, it has many and varied drills along with profuse and useful material for seeing the kanji in real-life situations, including many photos or mock-ups of street signs, calendars, meishi, etc. Understanding is also promoted by the useful choice of kanji motivated by a well thought-out and coherent order.
Although the book gives "understanding the kanji" explanations with illustrations for every kanji, it is often easier to ignore the more abstract ones. For example, the explanation for the "day of the week" kanji is "combines sun, wings, and fat bird. The sun flying on a bird's wings suggests a day of the week." Admittedly, the explanations of the more concrete versions are better, but I didn't really find them very useful. If you like that kind of thing, supplement with Heisig's "Remembering the Kanji," which has more useful mnemonics (but doesn't have any exercises or vocabulary).
The bottom line is that this book is far more than a list of kanji and vocabulary. Using Russian: A Guide to Contemporary Usage ReviewThis book is simply unbelievable in its scope and detail. It even surpasses Terrence Wade's "A Comprehensive Russian Grammar". Derek Offord starts out with an examination of the major levels of speech, i.e. register 1 (colloquial or common speech), register 2 (the polite speech of an educated person which is not formal), and register 3 (the advanced formal speech, such as scientific, official business, and publicistic speech). He also mentions a sub-level of speech which does not fall into the appropriate speech of the above registers, but includes slang and vulgar speech. He not only analyzes these levels of speech, but gives detailed examples of each. And that's just chapter one!
Chapter two deals with problems in meaning, such as homophones, homonyms, and words found only in the plural or only in the singular.
Chapter three deals with words that are hard to translate from English to Russian.
Chapter four deals with special vocabulary and idioms, including interjections and vulgar speech.
Chapter five delves into extrememly useful ways to use Russian for measurement, currency, fractions, time, telephone numbers, postal addresses, family relationships, public notices, abbreviations, acronyms, names of countries and nationalities, and names denoting inhabitants of Russian cities and towns.
Chapter six examines verbal etiquette in depth.
Chapter seven goes into word formation with all its variations, such as suffix and prefix, and augmentatives versus diminutives.
Chapter eight looks at inflection, chapter nine examines prepositions, and chapter ten goes deep into syntax for all the cases.
I agree with the previous reviewer who said that the word "awesome" would be an understatement to describe this book. I had heard many of the phrases in Korea, but until reading this book I didn't know what they meant, proof that this book is just as useful for advanced students as well as for pure beginners. My main gripe is with romanization. For example, Korean has an "uh" sound and an "oh" sound; in this book they are all written the same way. Also, the author has no knowledge of Korean grammar (e.g. he says "mashida" literally means "liquid"), which gives me less confidence to use phrases I have never heard before.Making Out in Korean: Revised Edition (Making Out Books) OverviewThe books in the Making Out series are fun and accessible guides to languages as they're spoken on the street. Best Test Preparation for the CLEP Spanish Language ReviewThis page says that the review guide was published in 1998; however, the one I recieved from Amazon was copyright 2003 and printed in 2006.
That said, this is an excellent source for reviewing for the test. It has three practice tests, with comprehensive explanations for EVERY correct and incorrect answer for each of the tests. It is also very helpful to listen to the included cds--it gives you a fairly accurate feel of how the real CLEP test will be.
The beginning of the book goes through every part of basic Spanish--everything from pronunciations to verb conjugation. Though it doesn't have the glitzy pictures of my college textbook (there are no pictures, actually), I feel that it is better organized and easier to follow. If you really spend the recommended time with this resource, I believe that passing the CLEP exam will not be really difficult. I passed the exam--but I also used (like I said earlier) a college textbook to augment my studies. Even so, the practice tests and accompanying explanations are very helpful. If anything, the CLEP exam I took seemed easier than the practice exams in this guide.
Highly recommended. I also recommend "501 Spanish Verbs"--that was a good guide for learning verb conjugation.
*I would like to note that the included cds that I received were mis-labeled, meaning that cd A is really cd B and vice-versa. Beginner's Georgian ReviewGeorgian has been a very overlooked language. Though there are a few textbooks out there that are easy enough to find, they tend to be either inaccessible in someway or expensive. And there are even fewer textbooks that come with audio. In fact, only Aronson's Georgian Reading Grammar comes with audio (aside from this book). And audio is VERY important to learning this language.
Now, to the actual text it self. The lessons are written in clear, conversational language. Whereas Aronson's text is for reading comprehension, this text it for speaking/listening comprehension. This is a much needed textbook and breath of fresh air to Georgian linguistics. The grammar sections are easy to understand and not bogged down with a lot of linguistic jargon. And the exercises have an answer key in the back of the book.
Now, the audio. The audio is great. You can hear the speakers very well and clearly. The dialogues are repeated twice. Once at normal speed and then at a slower speed for you to repeat after. Even the vocabulary lists are spoken on the cd's. The only thing that is a shame is that there are no speaking/listening exercises on the cd's (thus a 4 out of 5 instead of 5 out of 5).
Overall this is a great textbook though.Beginner's Georgian OverviewThis title includes a book and 2 CDs. Business people and travellers seeking easy access to the Georgian language will benefit from this book, which includes and introduction to Georgia, 13 practical lessons centred on everyday situations, review exercises, glossaries, and two audio CDs with correct pronunciation by native speakers.

Thai-English/English-Thai Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) ReviewAfter reading through this phrasebook, I've but two main observations. First is the positive. The tone markers are incredibly easy to understand, in fact, it is the best system I've seen so far. My only complaint is that there is absolutely no Thai scrpit in the book at all. So if you are having trouble pronouncing the word, your Thai friend/companion/etc. cannot simply read the Thai script and help you out. Other than that this is a nice phrasebook which has come in handy when I've used it in conjunction with other Thai language-learning materials.Thai-English/English-Thai Dictionary and Phrasebook (Dictionary and Phrasebooks) OverviewThis book provides basic grammar and the vocabulary and phrases essential to any traveller. Aozora: Intermediate-Advance Japanese Communication-2ND ED. (Japanese Edition) ReviewThis is a "copy-shop" textbook, laser-printed and then copied and bound into a book. The hand-made table of contents is completely wrong, the header fonts are occasionally an unreadable blob (especially the ones printed on poorly-screened gray backgrounds), and the layout is extremely cramped. Surprisingly, the body text is generally quite readable, marred only by excessive line length and poorly-done underlining.

The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) ReviewI've compared dozens of books about learning Russian from scratch, and this one is the best. There are advanced grammar texts out there which have more information, but they aren't geared toward beginners. The beauty of this book is that if you know absolutely nothing about Russian, you can start at the beginning and work your way through each lesson in the order presented, and by the time you're done, you will have a solid understanding of Russian grammar. Not only that, but you'll have a vocabulary of some of the most useful words in the Russian language.
When I first started studying Russian, I had no teachers or classes or cassette tapes to help me. My eighth grade math teacher gave me a copy of the original version of The Penguin Russian Course, which was compiled by J.L.I. Fennell and published in 1961. The methodology was logical and straightforward with no spoonfeeding or watered-down grammar lessons accompanied by cutsy cartoon pictures. In each lesson, you would first memorize a list of new vocabulary words. Then you would study several concise grammar principles which were clearly explained. Third, you would examine a brief Russian text which incorporated the new vocabulary and applied the new grammar principles which you had just learned in the lesson. Finally, you would translate an English text into Russian to test yourself on the new vocabulary and grammar. At the end of the book was a key which showed the correct translation of the English text into Russian, so you could check yourself.
This new version of the Penguin Russian Course is not as concise and straightforward as the first version, but it's actually better. Nicholas J. Brown has incorporated the original structure of J.L.I. Fennell's version enough that the effectiveness of the lessons is preserved, but Mr. Brown has added much more in this modern version. He has provided numerous additional Russian texts and conversations so that you can see how the vocabulary is used in context. And in this new version, the answer keys at the back of the book show the Russian-English translation as well as the English-Russian translation of the exercises.
The best part of this book is the translation exercises at the end of each lesson and their corresponding answer keys at the back of the book. Translation is probably the best way to test whether or not you really understand the grammar and vocabulary taught in the lessons, and this book gives you plenty of opportunities to test yourself in this manner.
Another advantage of this book is that it's small enough to carry anywhere, unlike those bulky Russian 101 textbooks used in college classes which use a slow, watered-down, almost infantile approach to teaching the language.
If you want to learn Russian, buy this book and work through the lessons. The only major drawback is that you'll never really learn proper pronunciation without listening to native Russians speak the language, and this book doesn't have tapes to accompany it. It starts off with letter sounds, and by the end of the book is working with blends, CVC words, and other skills. My one complaint is that the space given for writing answers is not usually enough for young children. Differentiated Instruction for the Middle School Language Arts Teacher: Activities and Strategies for an Inclusive Classroom (Differentiated Instruction for Middle School Teachers) ReviewTeaching middle school students can present its own set of challenges and given that most of the classrooms these days are inclusive, this presents quite an undertaking for teachers who wish to reach out to all their students and take into consideration the diverse needs of the students, in terms of learning styles, communication styles, skills level etc. "Differentiated Instruction for the Middle School Language Arts Teacher" presents a host of practical activities and strategies that can be used in an inclusive classroom.
The book is divided into two parts. Part One: Being Successful in the Inclusive Classroom addresses issues such as collaboration (for intervention, with the Child Study Team, with the school team, and with parents/families); determining learning styles to differentiate instruction; and, effective teaching strategies in an inclusive classroom, including alternative assessment methods.
Part Two: Language Arts activities for the inclusive middle school classroom offers specific activities that can be carried out in an inclusive Language Arts classroom, and these activities are in alignment with national content standards. Every activity has a list of required materials listed, and instructions on how the activity is to be carried out. Each activity also has a worksheet included which is reproducible. At the end of each activity, there is a segment titled "How to Adapt this lesson for an Inclusive Classroom" which has strategies for learning disabled students, resistant learners and students with ADD/ADHD, for students with fine motor weaknesses, and also for gifted learners, and the rest of the class. There is also a link made between the home and school, titled the "Home/School Connection" which helps students link the lesson/activity with real life by engaging their families in the activity (through homework, research, etc). Evaluation strategies are also offered in this segment.
This is an invaluable resource for Language Arts teachers in inclusive classrooms and will enable teachers to address the needs of diverse learners in the classroom. I feel this is an excellent book for studying Hanja. Not only does it include the radicals and show stroke order for each character, but chapters begin with reading selections that incorporate the Hanja vocabulary that is learned. Starting off with basics, and proceeding to more difficult characters and increasingly higher level text selections. Activities are included for memorizing meanings of each character, however you must provide your own space for repetitive practices of writing each character.Klear: Korean Reader Chinese Char (Klear Textbooks in Korean Language) OverviewA Korean Reader for Chinese Characters will help students of Korean master basic Chinese characters that are frequently encountered in everyday situations. More than five hundred characters are targeted in exercises that aid in the efficient study of the forms, meanings, and sounds of individual characters and their compounds. Although the primary goal of the Reader is recognition of basic Chinese characters, students are encouraged to learn to write them properly by inclusion of a section on stroke order.The Reader is also designed to reinforce skills in reading and writing in Korean while studying Chinese characters.Forty lessons are preceded by an introductory chapter on the principles of Chinese character formation and reading and writing characters and followed by appendices on stroke order, English translations of the main reading text of each lesson, and an index of characters. The lessons are organized into seven parts: new characters, reading text, glossary, notes, new words in characters, more words in characters, and exercises.
