Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary ReviewI got this book during summer vacation in an attempt to make vocabulary instruction more interesting. I copied the first two pages for my 5th graders, we sang the original song, and then I had them tell me which words fit in which blanks. Then, we sang it again. In under 15 minutes, the kids new 7 new Tier 2 words! On top of that, we were all laughing our heads off about "Be compassionate to your web-footed comrades."
Each songs has several synonyms that would fit into the blanks. I whited out all but one synonym for each blanked out word. This made our instruction quicker and more focused. It also didn't overwhelm them with too many synonyms to remember. After this, I put the new words on note cards on a bulletin board and when the kids find these words in their daily reading, they can show me the word and then go up and put a tally on the note card.
Lots of fun, sticks in your head. It's a fool-proof way to learn words, and it's way more exciting than vocabulary books.Building Vocabulary With Familiar Songs: A Unique and Fun Way to Motivate Students to Play With Language and Enrich Their Vocabulary OverviewIntroduce students to new words and their meanings using favorite childhood songs and rhymes. First, students sing or recite a familiar song or rhyme and discuss what it means. Then, they replace some of its words with synonyms. Students can learn 10 to 20 new vocabulary words per song or rhyme. A fun yet meaningful way to build vocabulary! For use with Grades 3–6.

The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-To-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) ReviewI wish I had had this book when I changed careers midlife and stepped into a 9th grade English classroom with little more than a textbook, my emergency credential, and a pair of knocking knees three years ago. Mary Lou Brandvik's book is aimed at new junior high and high school teachers and offers help in classroom management, lesson plans, and teaching writing and literature. Many books I've looked at or purchased tend to offer general ideas for instruction designed to work in a wide range of classes, but this book is truly aimed at the English teacher. Her book gave me what no one else did: a guide and a framework that would have helped me get through that first difficult year. It's filled with good ideas for writing assignments and novel (but functional) suggestions for student reading responses, group and individual projects, and speeches. A friend of mine complains about "quilt-making" activities taught at teachers' classes we've attended -- those vague, touchy-feely activities that don't move students ahead in skills. This book's activities are really linked to improving writing and reading. No paper quilts, thank heaven.Brandvik includes a section on working with others (parents, administrators, etc.) and a brief chapter on becoming a more effective teacher. Save the life of a new, desperate English teacher: Give him or her this book. The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-To-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12 (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) Overview

The Grammar Teacher's Activity-a-Day: 180 Ready-to-Use Lessons to Teach Grammar and Usage (JB-Ed: 5 Minute FUNdamentals) ReviewI am currently a substitute teacher and keep this book in my bag...I have used it a number of times when the regular teacher has not left me adequate lesson plans. Engage the Brain: Games, Language Arts, Grades 6-8 ReviewI purchased this book hoping for additional curriculum-reinforcing games that would enhance the learning experience of my English students. While the games in this book do just that, the instructions for some are rather lengthy; they may contain as many as ten or twelve steps. However, if you can work your way through the directions and the prep (cutting out and photo-copying), you will find the games to be fun and effective. The book is divided into four chapters: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, and Listening and Speaking. Many games have extended learning activities (which is good for the more advanced students). Some of the material covers such things as defining vocabulary words through context clues, multiple-meaning words, root and compound words, tone and attitude in literature, literary genres, parts of speech, sentence parts, editing skills, literary devices (metaphors and similes), etc. While I do consider this book an asset, I doubt I will reach for it as often as some of my other books. I would have given it a definite five-star rating were it not for the lengthy, somewhat involved instructions of some of the games.Engage the Brain: Games, Language Arts, Grades 6-8 OverviewThis exciting new resource offers fun, innovative gamesin language arts. Based on the most recent brain research, the games engage students in becoming active, motivated learners.
