Treatment Planning for Person-Centered Care: The Road to Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) ReviewThis book is unbeatable when it comes to resources for understanding and creating good solid goals that match up with diagnosis for various services in the mental health field such as counseling, case management, community supports, CAP, and others. The book gives clear examples of broad and specific goals and interventions that would be effective with each. If you are making a treatment plan and want evidence based goals, or you are using person centered planning this book is for you. Everyone in my office bought one after we were introduced to it and it has really helped with getting approval from the state with our plans for community support services. I suggest trying to find it used, although the later editions have more information. I have purchased several for others and the prices have ranged from $15 to $40.Treatment Planning for Person-Centered Care: The Road to Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) Overview

Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect ReviewI highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read. Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect Overview

Early Communication Skills for Children With Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals ReviewI wish I had time to read the whole thing at once, it's full of helpful info. I recommend it to anyone working with or parenting a child with down syndrome. Something that is partcularly nice about it as well as the other books like it is that they don't talk in ages but in stages. This way you can follow your child, and not some outward source that determines what they should be doing and when.
Early Communication Skills for Children With Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals OverviewChildren with Down syndrome have a wide range of speech and language abilities, and most need the help of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) beginning at birth to maximise communication development. Early Communication Skills for Children with Down Syndrome explains the role of a SLP, the stages of communication development, and how certain characteristics of Down syndrome, such as low muscle tone, hearing loss, and cognitive delays, can slow progression of those skills. Delays can lead to frustration and other problems for children who do not have intelligible speech until age 2 or later. This new book is the updated, expanded edition of Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome. It focuses on speech and language development from birth through the stage of making 3-word phrases, which is often around kindergarten age, but can occur later. This book offers parents a wealth of information on intelligibility issues, hearing loss, apraxia (difficulty planning oral-motor movements), and other factors that affect communication for children with Down syndrome. It explains how to prepare for and understand the results of a speech-language assessment, and goes on to describe what to expect in the years ahead when a child enters elementary school. Throughout the new edition, the author incorporates the latest research on Down Syndrome and communication development. She has added new chapters on augmentative and alternative communication and other high- and low-tech supplemental communication options, as well as articulation, and literacy (how reading aids in the learning of language, speech, and auditory skills). New checklists on evaluating and treating speech problems, and numerous home activities designed to help children master each stage of communication development have also been added

Writing Works: A Resource Handbook for Therapeutic Writing Workshops and Activities (Writing for Therapy Or Personal Development) ReviewThis was a dissapointing book for me as I was looking for good journal reference, but all their examples are taken from poetry. It is out of balance in that way and should state in the title that all the exercises involve poetry.
John Laughlin, Reading Thomas MertonWriting Works: A Resource Handbook for Therapeutic Writing Workshops and Activities (Writing for Therapy Or Personal Development) OverviewThe use of creative writing as a route to personal development is a powerful therapeutic tool - a fact that is recognized in the growing numbers of workshops and writing groups within professional contexts, including clinical, health and criminal justice settings. "Nurturing Words" is a guide for writers or therapists working with groups or individuals and is full of practical advice on everything from the equipment needed to run a session to ideas for themes, all backed up by the theory that underpins the methods explained. Experienced practitioners in the field contribute detailed illuminating accounts of organizing writing workshops for a wide range of different clients, together with examples of their outcomes. This book will be an invaluable start-up reference for arts therapists and professionals working across the health, social care and caring professions, and one that will be referred to again and again.
