The Independent Learner: A Practical Guide to Learning a Foreign Language at Home from Scratch to Functional ReviewNow a couple of years into my slow evolution into learning Spanish (learning a language means never being satisfied with your level) I received this book to see his tips on learning a language. And am I ever glad I did!
This book specializes in Spanish which the author learned but applies to all languages. It carries the author through all of the steps of learning a language and offers many different options. For example, this author used a self study course but that doesn't keep him from mentioning many that are available. Where this book really helped me is his focus on help on the internet. For example, you need to speak with others. I wasn't aware of the many resources on the web to do this with a "language learning partner". His appendix is chock full of recommendations that I'm sure will help me and take some time to select between. Also, there are helpful passages on many pages. One example is the time he deals with the shyness people have with sharing their new language due to lack of confidence. All who have tried a second language can identify with this and it's so important you fight through and not be afraid to work on your language even if you sometimes show your ignorance.
Overall, I found this a very quick but fulfilling read on tips for learning a second language which I definitely plan on using staring this week.
