The Independent Learner: A Practical Guide to Learning a Foreign Language at Home from Scratch to Functional ReviewNow a couple of years into my slow evolution into learning Spanish (learning a language means never being satisfied with your level) I received this book to see his tips on learning a language. And am I ever glad I did!
This book specializes in Spanish which the author learned but applies to all languages. It carries the author through all of the steps of learning a language and offers many different options. For example, this author used a self study course but that doesn't keep him from mentioning many that are available. Where this book really helped me is his focus on help on the internet. For example, you need to speak with others. I wasn't aware of the many resources on the web to do this with a "language learning partner". His appendix is chock full of recommendations that I'm sure will help me and take some time to select between. Also, there are helpful passages on many pages. One example is the time he deals with the shyness people have with sharing their new language due to lack of confidence. All who have tried a second language can identify with this and it's so important you fight through and not be afraid to work on your language even if you sometimes show your ignorance.
Overall, I found this a very quick but fulfilling read on tips for learning a second language which I definitely plan on using staring this week.
The Independent Learner: A Practical Guide to Learning a Foreign Language at Home from Scratch to Functional OverviewDon't you believe you can learn a foreign language without classes? Well, maybe not 20 years ago. It's now rather easy to find affordable or even free materials for studying a foreign language independently. Finding someone to practice with has also become much easier than it used to be. This book will enable you to: - teach yourself a language from scratch to a functional level anywhere and anytime you want;- choose the best learning materials for yourself; - enhance your language skills once you have a solid foundation; - stay motivated and persistent; - revive your confidence in your language and learning abilities; - make vocabulary stick, and turn the infamous enemy called grammar into an ally; - get the most out of a leisure trip abroad. The above are discussed with an emphasis on learning the Spanish language. However, the majority of the recommendations should apply to self-learners of other languages as well.

Biblical Greek Language and Lexicography ReviewThe eighteen contributors, including Dr. Danker himself, discuss
new approaches to the advances in the field of lexicography, particularly as they apply to the New Testament, the Septuagint,
and some aspects of Hebrew. Various themes include lexical
expansions, development of the BDAG Lexicon, electronic resources for Greek, certain functions, the organization, function and structure of the Greek-English Dictionary; there are also concordances, semantics, verbal aspect and linguistic analyses. This well-written book will be a valuable addition to the libraries of students, researchers, scholars, and even self-learners.
The contents also include an introduction and acknowledgments, key to abbreviations, a bibliography of Dr. F.W.Danker to whom the book is dedicated, an appendix,a list of the precursors to the BDAG Lexicon, an index of Greek words, and of Hebrew words, and indexes of grammatical and lexicographical terms.
I highly recommend this book because of its excellent coverage of the history of lexicography; and the variety of its topics is rich as a result of the contribution of eighteen scholars. Not
only that, I gained an additional appreciation of Danker's
great work in his contribution to this area of study. His outstanding work is well known around the world. The book is
well written and it was a pleasure to read literature such as this. I hope others will enjoy the book as much as I have.Biblical Greek Language and Lexicography Overview

The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (Biblical Resource) ReviewAccording the the preface, Birlin has made no substantive changes to the previous edition. Rather, she corrected errors and added a previously unpublished and still incomplete essay on biblical simile by Lida Knorina. Thus, if you own the original, you need to decide if the essay on simile is worth the full cover price.
However, if you don't own the first edition, do buy her work; it is excellent. She covers all the various types of biblical parallelism in depth using Hebrew examples with English translations. Although I read the first edition before I knew Hebrew, I would recommend having at least a rudimentary understanding of Hebrew before tackling this work. I had a hard time understanding morphological, lexical, and phonological parallelism without basic Hebrew skills. If you enjoy this work you may also want to read Robert Alter's less technical book The Art of Biblical Poetry.
I have deducted one star because the book was corrected not revised.
The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism (Biblical Resource) OverviewUnderstanding of biblical poetry, like any other, is enhanced by the study of its structure. In The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism Adele Berlin analyzes parallelism, a major feature of biblical poetry, from a linguistic perspective.Berlin begins with a brief history of the study of biblical parallelism by biblical scholars. She then focuses on parallelism considered more broadly in the work of linguist Roman Jakobson, a new section in this second edition. The chapters following concentrate on the various linguistic levels that come into play in the construction of parallel lines. Here is the key observation that parallel lines involve both similarity and difference on all linguistic levels - morphology, syntax, lexical, semantic, and phonologic. Berlin concludes by showing how these levels can be combined and analyzing examples of parallelism in biblical passages.Linguistic, but not overly technical, The Dynamics of Biblical Parallelism will enhance understanding of biblical poetry for both biblical and literary scholars.

Language is Music ReviewThe method in this book is in my opinion the best way to go about language learning but the book doesn't need to be bought in order to know the way. The whole book could be summed up in two words: total immersion. Immerse yourself in tv, music, reading, etc.
If you've been learning a language you already know this. If you're starting from point zero, the tips in this book might be helpful, but you are going to have to read through the author bragging about how "gifted" she is, going on and on about how it is a blessing and a curse. Give me a break and lets just learn some languages.Language is Music OverviewLanguage is Music focuses on making learning foreign languages fun, easy and affordable for anyone with a desire to communicate effectively with people around the world. By applying over 70 simple tips to things you already do, such as listening to music or surfing the Web, you can experience the joy of "fluency" in any language without having to study abroad or spend money on private tutors. In Language is Music, Susanna Zaraysky masterfully shares her listening methods so that anyone can have fun learning any language. Zaraysky has what you might call "an ear" for languages, having used music to successfully learn English, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Serbo-Croatian-all with excellent accents.
Advance Praise for Language is Music "I love it! I think it will help people who want to learn, and those who are curious about additional language learning. Many people want to learn a language but are frightened, or disappointed by the courses they have taken. Language is Music will teach you how to make language acquisition a part of your daily life, and to recreate the kind of total-immersion environment necessary for fluency. Highly recommended reading for aspiring polyglots. Pick up this book and you too will be all ears!"-Justin Liang, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Marshallese, intermediate Spanish
'Back in France, I spent many years learning "academic" English in school. But I progressed much faster when I forced myself to listen to the BBC or not look at the subtitles when watching an American movie. I wish I had Susanna's book with me then. It's full of creative ideas and practical tips that are indispensable complements to the traditional methods of learning foreign languages -- and it's coming from someone you can trust, she speaks so many of them!"-Philippe Levy, French native speaker
'This book is great. It showed me another aspect and a new approach of learning a language. I will put the book to good use. As a foreign English speaker, I spent many years at school learning English and did not make much progress. A lot of the tips that I read in this book, I learned them with time. However if I had read this book earlier, it would have made my life much easier and I would have saved so much time. I am going to apply the tips in Language is Music into learning a third language: Spanish. This time, I am sure I will make huge progress much faster. Not only is Language is Music useful in acquiring a foreign language, but the resources and websites in the book are valuable for someone who wants to travel abroad."-Fabien Hsu, French native speaker
