Bilingual By Choice: Raising Kids in Two (or More) Languages ReviewThis is the clearest, most practical guide I've ever read for parents wondering about the effects of multilingualism in the home. In today's globalizing world, more and more families have parents who speak different "mother tongues." In other homes, the language used at home may not be the language spoken in the dominant surrounding culture. Parents wonder, "Is it OK to teach a child different languages at the same time? What happens if I do? What happens if I don't? If I do,what are some good strategies?"
"Bilingual by Choice" not only gives clear answers to these questions based on solid research but the material is presented in an engaging, personal, and very readable style. It is a key book for educators who work with bi and multilingual children to read as well. I HIGHLY recommend it.Bilingual By Choice: Raising Kids in Two (or More) Languages OverviewBecoming bilingual is one thing-staying bilingual is another. Bilingual children have social, cultural and economic opportunities available to them that would otherwise be out of reach. For many families, speaking at least one language other than English at home is already a given-more than 51 million people in the U.S. alone live in multilingual homes. But what about when bilingual children go to English-speaking schools and are expected to thrive in a primarily monolingual English-speaking community? How do families maintain a balance and help their children to grow and develop in more than one language? In Bilingual By Choice, Virginie Raguenaud guides parents on how to introduce a second language to their children. She also provides insights, resources, and activities for raising children that will go on to become bilingual adults. This book is the first of its kind to address bilingualism from the cradle to adolescence. Raguenaud uses practical strategies and techniques for any family or instructor to ensure that kids stay engaged and active in every language available to them. By using creativity, consistency and commitment in the classroom (as well as the living room), teaching children a second language can be fun as well as beneficial.

Foreign Language Made Easy ReviewNot counting the introduction and preface, there are 88 pages of text. Not that this would matter if the information was actually helpful. Half of this is a survey of the foreign languages most commonly studied in the U.S. along with explanation of a few of the things that might cause confusion for a native English speaker. It's slightly useful, but you can get much better information from language-specific books.
Only 9 pages of the book actually try to give any tips for learning languages, and most of them are really general study tips like "pay attention in class" and "study and review every day." The only language-specific tips are: use flashcards for studying vocabulary and memorize grammatical structures by examples in context. The author also says you shouldn't listen to language tapes that have the English translations because it'll confuse you. He says that Instead you should listen to audio books and movies that are only in the foreign language. This may be okay for an advanced learner who already knows the language pretty well, but if you're just starting out it's ridiculous advice: it'll just sound like a meaningless jumble, you won't be able to pick out the separate words, much less understand what they mean.
The rest of the book has a few interesting tidbits about languages, clichés about why you should learn to speak a foreign language such as "it'll give you increased opportunities in business" and "it'll help you discover other cultures," a sample conjugation of an English verb to illustrate the names of the various tenses, and a glossary of grammatical terms that I found unhelpful because it's out of context and it doesn't explain terms that come up in the language-specific chapters such as "case.
I've read many books on learning foreign languages and the best of the lot by far is Language Logic: Practical and Effective Techniques to Learn Any Foreign Language. If you're interested in comparing the grammar of different languages, learning about language families, and getting an approach for learning several languages simultaneously, check out The Loom of Language: An Approach to the Mastery of Many Languages. It's a 690 page book and far from being easy reading, but it has excellent information on how the grammar of other language families compares to English and how they compare to each other, and a lot of good advice on how to go about learning a language in the quickest and most efficient way depending on your goals.Foreign Language Made Easy OverviewMany high school and university students find foreign language classes difficult. Although learning a language is a natural process, students study languages inefficiently and they lack effective strategies for language learning.
Foreign Language Made Easy is designed to make studying a foreign language an easy and enjoyable experience. The best techniques for foreign language success are explained in a simple format that anyone can follow. Effective techniques for note taking specifically designed for the foreign language classroom are addressed, as are successful methods to learn grammatical structures and effectively increase vocabulary.
The last sections of Foreign Language Made Easy are language-specific, and include the most common languages taught in the United States, such as Latin, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Japanese, and Chinese. Common errors are explained, and simple techniques are presented that will help students to succeed.
Everyone can learn a foreign language. By following the suggestions presented in this text, even students that previously found learning a foreign language difficult will meet with success.

Language is Music ReviewThe method in this book is in my opinion the best way to go about language learning but the book doesn't need to be bought in order to know the way. The whole book could be summed up in two words: total immersion. Immerse yourself in tv, music, reading, etc.
If you've been learning a language you already know this. If you're starting from point zero, the tips in this book might be helpful, but you are going to have to read through the author bragging about how "gifted" she is, going on and on about how it is a blessing and a curse. Give me a break and lets just learn some languages.Language is Music OverviewLanguage is Music focuses on making learning foreign languages fun, easy and affordable for anyone with a desire to communicate effectively with people around the world. By applying over 70 simple tips to things you already do, such as listening to music or surfing the Web, you can experience the joy of "fluency" in any language without having to study abroad or spend money on private tutors. "Learning foreign languages is like learning to sing a song or play music," says self-made linguist Susanna Zaraysky and author of Language is Music. Zaraysky has what you might call "an ear" for languages, having used music to successfully learn English, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Serbo-Croatian-all with excellent accents.
Advance Praise for Language is Music "I love it! I think it will help people who want to learn, and those who are curious about additional language learning. Many people want to learn a language but are frightened, or disappointed by the courses they have taken. Reading Language is Music will encourage them to try again, on their own and with friendly supporters."-Dr. Elba Maldonado-Colon, Professor Department of Elementary Education Bilingual Program, San Jose State University

Language is Music will teach you how to make language acquisition a part of your daily life, and to recreate the kind of total-immersion environment necessary for fluency. Highly recommended reading for aspiring polyglots. Pick up this book and you too will be all ears!"-Justin Liang, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Marshallese, intermediate Spanish
'Back in France, I spent many years learning "academic" English in school. But I progressed much faster when I forced myself to listen to the BBC or not look at the subtitles when watching an American movie. I wish I had Susanna's book with me then. It's full of creative ideas and practical tips that are indispensable complements to the traditional methods of learning foreign languages -- and it's coming from someone you can trust, she speaks so many of them!"-Philippe Levy, French native speaker
'This book is great. It showed me another aspect and a new approach of learning a language. I will put the book to good use. As a foreign English speaker, I spent many years at school learning English and did not make much progress. A lot of the tips that I read in this book, I learned them with time. However if I had read this book earlier, it would have made my life much easier and I would have saved so much time. I am going to apply the tips in Language is Music into learning a third language: Spanish. This time, I am sure I will make huge progress much faster. Not only is Language is Music useful in acquiring a foreign language, but the resources and websites in the book are valuable for someone who wants to travel abroad."-Fabien Hsu, French native speaker
