Ethnicity and Family Therapy, Third Edition ReviewI first read this book several years ago. I am a professional computer scientist/applied mathematician, and have no training at all in any social science aside from history, government and anthropology courses taken in college (lo these many years ago). My interest in this book arises from the illumination that its chapters on the English, the Irish, the Italians and the Jews (the main ethnic groups in the town in which I grew up) have given to otherwise inexplicable bits of my life. For example, I could never understand why one of my Yankee friends would go into paroxysms of anger when, after inviting his daughter to Sunday dinner, she would accept, and then call with a (legitimate) excuse on Saturday; or why one of my mother's best friends, a woman of Irish descent, drove me wild for over 40 years with her teasing manner, although she clearly meant very well towards me. The pathways of social and familial relationships passed from generation to generation through the filter of ethnic heritage appears to be remarkably powerful, even in these post-melting-pot days. Read this book with an eye to self-discovery if you don't believe me!Ethnicity and Family Therapy, Third Edition OverviewThis widely used clinical reference and text provides a wealth of knowledge on culturally sensitive practice with families and individuals from over 40 different ethnic groups. Each chapter demonstrates how ethnocultural factors may influence the assumptions of both clients and therapists, the issues people bring to the clinical context, and their resources for coping and problem solving.

Russian Talk: Culture and Conversation During Perestroika ReviewRies's book has become one of the must-cite books among anthropologists working in Russia or the xSSR. This is one of the first, if not the first ethnographic work based on research in an urban setting. Anthropologists typically head to the tundra or the villages, but most Russians live in very large cities. She presents an ethnography of conversations, usually in the kitchen around drinking tea, which provides fascinating insights into the daily lives of urban people during perestroika. She includes an epilogue describing some of the changes after the fall of the Soviet Union.
This is an ethnography, and not linguistic analysis or conversation analysis, so people looking for that kind of work may be disappointed. On the other hand, this is a book accessible to non-academics if you are willing to put in a little effort working through the subtle arguments.Russian Talk: Culture and Conversation During Perestroika OverviewSoulful, theatrical, intense: Russian talk is notably full of existential musing and dark passion. However, despite the widespread appreciation of Russian talk, no one has analyzed it as a form of cultural performance. As one of the first Western ethnographers to undertake fieldwork in Moscow, Nancy Ries did just that. In this pioneering study, she shows how everyday conversation shapes Russian identity and culture.Dire stories about poverty, hardship, and social decay recited constantly during perestroika served to fabricate a common worldview--conveying a sense of shared experience and destiny, and casting Russian society as an inescapable realm of absurdity and suffering. Ries agues that while these narratives aptly depicted the chaotic events of the time, they also comprised a kind of contemporary folklore, generic in their lamenting, portentous tones and their culturally poignant details. The story of a grandmother who stands in line all day in order to bring home a precious kilo of sugar becomes a parable of feminine self-sacrifice and endurance. Sardonic narratives about frustrated communal apartment dwellers pouring hot pepper in their neighbor's soup pot challenge the myth of camaraderie and express the proverbial notion that revenge is sweeter for Russians than reconciliation. This insightful ethnography suggests the enormous power that ordinary talk has, in any society, to shape social and political attitudes, and to produce distinctive cultural patterns.

Migrants to the Coasts: Livelihood, Resource Management, and Global Change in the Philippines (Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues) ReviewIf you're interested in the Philippines and how the globalized world, dominated by economic ventures and exploitation of local resources is affecting this area of the globe, this is the book for you. Full of first hand accounts from Prof. Eder that make the stories of the people, and how they really live, work, and support families come to life. Honest, insightful and a fun read.Migrants to the Coasts: Livelihood, Resource Management, and Global Change in the Philippines (Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues) OverviewThis case study explores how conflicting global pressures to exploit and to conserve the fish and other resources of coastal Southeast Asia play out in a series of communities in the coastal zone of Palawan Island in the Philippines, where the residents' livelihoods depend on fishing. The account considers a government program to relieve fishing pressures by establishing marine protected areas and creating "alternative livelihoods," and shows how ethnicity, gender, and evangelical religious conversion each figure in changing household economic strategies and other local efforts to cope with relentless global forces.

Teach Your Child Spanish Through Play, A Guide and Resource for Parents or Spanish for Kids, Games to Help Children Learn Spanish Language and Culture ReviewI was lucky enough to receive a pre-released copy of this wonderful resource! If you're a parent that understands the importance of second language acquisition, and really WANT to teach your child Spanish, but, but, but... This is the place to start! The author has written in a manner that flows and is easy to understand (none of that educator jargon) and truly gives practical, fun, and simple ways to experience Spanish with your child.
As you read, you feel like you're sitting at your kitchen table and she's just giving you some great advice!
Starr includes vocabulary lists in different sections, and the five different sections listed in the Table of Contents make it easy to use as a reference as well as a basis for HOW to teach Spanish (even if you don't know Spanish yourself). There is even a resource section that includes how to evaulate material, websites, books, language centers, camps, addresses for embassies, the works! For that section alone, the purchase is worth it!
Whether your child is a wiggly one, or a "sit and do worksheets type," this guide is a must-have. I'm impressed, somehow, she covers it all!

Language Myths ReviewIn my opinion, how much you like this book will depend on how much you know now. If you are a novice to linguistics or just curious, this book is excellent. It covers a broad range of subjects, avoids heavy use of technical jargon, and gives explanations that anyone can follow. The information is clear, well explained (not just "It's like this because it is because I said so."), and entertaining.
If you have already been doing some reading in linguistics, this book may be a bit simplistic. While I found parts interesting, much I already knew. In other cases, since similar arguments are in many works about linguistics (see "Teach Yourself Linguistics 5e" for much more detail than this book), as soon as the argument started, I could figure out the rest faster than it was explained. So, if you have some background in linguistics, this book is good for either (1) light reading, or (2) good explanations to use when people present the misconceptions described in the book.Language Myths OverviewThis is a unique collection of original essays by 21 of the world's leading linguists. The topics discussed focus on some of the most popular myths about language: the media are ruining English; children can't speak or write properly anymore; and, America is ruining the English language. The tone is lively and entertaining throughout and there are cartoons from Doonesbury and The Wizard of Id to illustrate some of the points. The book should have a wide readership not only amongst students who want to read leading linguists writing about popular misconceptions but also amongst the large number of people who enjoy reading about language in general.

Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning: Teaching Second Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom ReviewIf you are a teacher, you know there are a lot of crappy teacher "resources" out there. This book is NOT one of them. I bought it as a requirement for a class and devoured it in a couple of days.
As other reviewers have stated, it's great because it talks about the theories behind learning a second language through content in the classroom, but it doesn't go so in-depth as to bore you to death. Gibbons also has a great balance between talking about the theories behind her work and giving teachers concrete examples and activities to try out on our own. If you follow the SIOP method (or are trying to) this book supports much of the content of the SIOP book, but in more accessible language and organization.
This book covers teaching speaking, writing, reading, and listening to ESL students, in homogeneous groups as well as in an integrated classrooms of native and non-native speakers. It also made me aware of aspects of my teaching that can either facilitate language learning or create a roadblock for ESL students.
Overall, great book!Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning: Teaching Second Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom Overview
How does a mainstream elementary classroom teacher with little or no specialized ESL training meet the challenge of teaching linguistically diverse students? Pauline Gibbons suggests how: integrate the teaching of English with the content areas of the regular curriculum. What's more, she shows how in this practical resource book.

Gibbons begins with a strong theoretical underpinning for her practice, drawing on a functional model of language, sociocultural theories of learning, and current research on second-language development. After supporting her view that the regular curriculum offers the best language-learning environment for young ESL students, Gibbons demonstrates the ways in which content areas provide a context for the teaching of English, from speaking and listening to reading and writing. These in turn are treated not as discrete skills, but as ones that can also be integrated in the learning of diverse subjects. Gibbons illustrates this with a wide range of teaching and learning activities across the curriculum, supplemented with programming and assessment formats and checklists.

Language learning is not a simple linear process, but involves the ongoing development of skills for a range of purposes. Gibbons sees this development as largely the result of the social contexts and interactions in which learning occurs. By focusing on the ways in which teachers can "scaffold" language and learning in the content areas, she takes a holistic approach-one that appreciates the struggle of students learning a new language, while simultaneously developing subject knowledge in it, and the challenge for teachers to address these needs.

Given today's culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, ESL students can no longer be thought of as a group apart from the mainstream-they are. the mainstream. This book describes the ways to ensure that ESL learners become full members of the school community with the language and content skills they need for success.
