The Syntax of Spoken Arabic ReviewFor me, a budding linguist, it is pure joy to read this type of linguistic work. Brustad covers so many aspcts of spoken arabic in such a professional, ordered and useful manner. Examples are cited from the four dialect regions studied (Moroccan, Egyptian, Syrian and Kuwaiti) to prove each point. They are written in the original arabic (or how they would be written), then transliterated into the romanized script, and then written with the english translation. Nearly every aspect of spoken arabic is discussed here; even the most basic of points (ie differences in singular and plural nouns) are discussed in detail. She uses information from general linguistics, typology, syntax, phonology and compares arabic with other languages for a great description of each dialect region. There are appendices in the back which have the full stories, anecdotes, jokes, etc. collected from her personal data which she uses throughout the book to prove her points. It is in written in the same manner that the examples are written in.
GREAT BOOK! If you are interested in (arabic) linguistics, get this book! The Syntax of Spoken Arabic OverviewThis book is the first comparative study of the syntax of Arabic dialects, based on natural language data recorded in Morocco, Egypt, Syria, and Kuwait. These four dialect regions are geographically diverse and representative of four distinct dialect groups. Kristen E. Brustad has adopted an analytical approach that is both functional and descriptive, combining insights from discourse analysis, language typology, and pragmatics - the first time such an approach has been used in the study of spoken Arabic syntax. An appendix includes sample texts from her data. Brustad's work provides the most nuanced description available to date of spoken Arabic syntax, widens the theoretical base of Arabic linguistics, and gives both scholars and students of Arabic tools for greater cross-dialect comprehension.

Arabic (Egyptian), Q&S: Learn to Speak and Understand Egyptian Arabic with Pimsleur Language Programs Reviewthis audio-only course is geared towards people who are not so comfortable learning languages and want to master the real basics of a language in a setting that's reminiscent of having your own personal tutor. if this is you, then this is definitely the course for you. this course walks you through the essentials -- "how are you", "do you understand arabic", etc., nice and slow, with lots of repetition and little extraneous grammar explanations and so on. this course follows the method pimsleur is known for, gradually building up new knowledge in the process of repeating the old knowledge.
on the other hand, if you are more comfortable with languages, like to go at your own pace and/or want explanations of how the language works, you will be very frustrated by the endless repetition. go pick up "teach yourself gulf arabic" instead. [unfortunately, not egyptian dialect. i haven't yet found a good egyptian arabic book.]Arabic (Egyptian), Q&S: Learn to Speak and Understand Egyptian Arabic with Pimsleur Language Programs OverviewQ&S Egyptian Arabic includes the first 8 lessons from the Pimsleur Comprehensive Level I. 4 hours, audio-only, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.

Dardasha: Let's Speak Egyptian Arabic : A Multidimensional Approach to the Teaching and Learning of Egyptian Arabic As a Foreign Language (Let's Speak African Language Series) ReviewThis is a fantastic book for learning Egyptian Arabic. Arabic (Eastern), Conversational: Learn to Speak and Understand Eastern Arabic with Pimsleur Language Programs (Pimsleur Instant Conversation) ReviewI was hesitant about learning Arabic, given how difficult others had made the effort out to be. This set of discs made it very easy. The repetition used (called the "Pimsleur Method") worked really well for me. I found myself repeating phrases from the CD's in my head long after listening to them. This is a great way to pick up a new language.Arabic (Eastern), Conversational: Learn to Speak and Understand Eastern Arabic with Pimsleur Language Programs (Pimsleur Instant Conversation) OverviewEastern Arabic is the dialect spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine.
