Sun Web Server: The Essential Guide ReviewI read a lot of technical books about a lot of topics, but I read very few of them cover-to-cover. I did that with Sun Web Server, the Essential Guide. It's an easy read about a complex hunk of software. It goes into great depth, but is still understandable and practical.
Granted, I've worked with Sun Web Server and its predecessors for more than a decade as well as its competitors, so I have a vested interest in the topic. But this book clearly explained a lot that isn't evident in the user documentation. The book also benefits by the web server software itself, which seems to have improved significantly in this version.
The only negatives I have are that some chunks of text seem repetitive. I suspect that's so the chapters can stand alone. But if you read it from front to back, there are a couple 'didn't-you-already-say-that' moments.

Service Oriented Enterprises ReviewHave you identified the human element of SOA within your organization? Service Oriented Enterprises provides an in-depth look at how SOAs are affecting various facets within the enterprise - both organizational AND cultural. Dr. Khoshafian has done a tremendous job making the argument that SOA is only part of the puzzle toward change and that the second major layer of SOEs, called service oriented business process integration, is key to success. I especially liked the ideas he presented on how service orientation can narrow the gap between business and IT, as I can implement some of those ideas at my company. This book will be helpful to both the IT-focused people within your organization as well as the business people who are actively trying to lead in today's service-computing world.Service Oriented Enterprises OverviewExtending beyond the technical architecture to the very philosophy of how a business should operate, the Service Orientation approach establishes fluidity across boundaries to provide agility, transparency, and fundamental competitive advantage. Service Oriented Enterprises brings the concept of service orientation from the IT department to the boardroom, applying the precepts of service oriented technology to the underlying dynamics of how a business operates. Implementing a technological concept as a cultural paradigm, the SOE succeeds by combining the best features from virtual, extended, real-time, and resilient enterprises to serve not just its customers, but also its trading partners, shareholders and employees. Building primarily on the success of the Internet and the automation of business policies and processes, the Service Oriented Enterprise (SOE) is defined by three essential layers: the enterprise performance layer, the business process management layer, and the underlying service oriented architecture. This book focuses primarily on layers two and three and how the fundamental dynamics of a business can be altered when these concepts are applied to both architecture and culture. Beginning with an overview of the emerging SOE culture, the text contrasts the new service-oriented methodologies with traditional waterfall and iterative methodologies. Emphasizing Web Service strategies for description, discovery, and deployment techniques, the author goes deeper into service-oriented concepts describing the business process management suite as the central core of the SOE, and introducing the Enterprise Service Bus as the backbone for integration. The text describe how modeling, executing, and continuously improving the business process and business policies lends to the development of a common language between business and IT. The book concludes by expanding on these concepts and delving into the societal and behavioral aspects of the Service Oriented Enterprise. The reality of business is no longer one where change is an unusual phenomenon; today change is the norm and the capacity for consumer-sensitive, fluid transition is vital to business survival. Service Oriented Enterprises provides the key concepts to facilitate that change.

FBML Essentials: Facebook Markup Language Fundamentals ReviewI purchased this book after reading a review calling this book "Totally obsolete". That reviewer has lost credibility with me, but I will admit there are portions in the book that restrict it to a period of time in the past (I feel authors should avoid referencing the future with expectation, unless they are planning a revised edition to follow those dates). This may be what the one reviewer focused on while ignoring the real context of the book. There is also a major resource link referenced I found not working, but these types of things are beyond an author's control (unless they are controlling that domain... hmmm...).
Anyway, except for a few things that date the content of this book I found it to be a solid addition to my reference library and as I begin to develop Facebook Applications it will be one of my resources to help me determine the best development route (FBML vs API).
I do appreciate the author's interests in reviews of his book and in truth it was his statements (not solely the negative review) that encouraged me to purchase the book for a closer look.
To quote Rodney Rumford; "Jesse has given you the direction to properly use FMBL with this great book. Use it often and it will save you hours of frustration." I have to agree.
FBML Essentials: Facebook Markup Language Fundamentals Overview
Do you have an idea for a Facebook application? With FBML Essentials, you'll learn how to build it quickly using the Facebook Markup Language (FBML) and other easy-to-use tools in the site's framework. Any applications you write for it will have a potential audience of 16 million dedicated users. It's not just another social networking site, either. Under the surface, Facebook is pretty sophisticated, with a development toolkit that includes it's own modified version of HTML -- FBML -- to customize the look and feel of your Facebook applications. A walkthrough of a sample Facebook application
Design rules for using images, CSS, JavaScript, and forms
Specific chapters on tags -- authorization tags, logic tags, user/group tags, profile-specific tags, and more
Messaging and alerts using FBML
Creating forms with FBML
Facebook navigation
Notifications and requests
Dynamic FBML attributes, including MockAJAX
How to test your FBML code
A chapter on FBJS, Facebook's version of JavaScript
