Factor Five: Transforming the Global Economy through 80% Improvements in Resource Productivity ReviewA deeply researched report on the increasing worldwide potentials of energy and water productivity. The authors are renowned experts in this vital field and show in this ook where the greatest improvements are to be found. Essential reading!
Hazel Henderson, author of Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy and The Politics of the Solar Age: Alternatives to EconomicsFactor Five: Transforming the Global Economy through 80% Improvements in Resource Productivity OverviewWhen first published in 1997, Factor Four: Doubling Wealth, Halving Resource Use by renowned economic and engineering experts Ernst von Weizscker, Amory Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins, transformed how economists, policy makers, engineers, entrepreneurs and business leaders thought about innovation and wealth creation. Through examples from a wide range of industrial sectors, the authors demonstrated how technical innovation could cut resource use in half while doubling wealth. Now twelve years on, with climate change at the top of the world agenda and the new economic giants of China and India needing ever more resources, there is a unique historic opportunity to scale up resources productivity and radically transform the global economy. And Factor Five is the book set to change all of this. Picking up where Factor Four left off, this new book examines the past 15 years of innovation in industry, technical innovation and policy. It shows how and where factor four gains have been made and how we can achieve greater factor five or 80%+ improvements in resource and energy productivity and how to roll them out on a global scale to retool our economic system, massively boost wealth for billions of people around the world and help solve the climate change crises. Spanning dozens of countries including China and India and examining innumerable cases of innovation in design, technology and policy, the authors leave no engineering and economic stone unturned in their quest for excellence. The book tackles sustainable development and climate change by providing in depth Factor 5 resource productivity studies of the following sectors: Buildings, Industry, Agriculture, Food and Hospitality, and Transportation. In its systematic approach to demonstrating how Factor 5 can be achieved, the book also provides an overview of energy/water nexus and energy/materials nexus efficiency opportunities across these sectors. Given that these sectors are responsible for virtually all energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions globally, this book is designed to guide everyone from individual households, businesses, industry sector groups to national governments in their efforts to achieve the IPCC recommended target of 80 per cent reductions to greenhouse gas emissions. It also looks at innovation in regulation to increase resource productivity, pricing, carbon trading, eco-taxation and permits and the role of international institutions and trade. The authors also explain exciting new concepts such as bio-mimicry and whole system design, as hallmarks for a new generation of technologies. The last part of the book explores transformative ideas such as a long term trajectory of gently rising energy and resource prices, and new concepts of well-being in a more equitable world.Like its predecessor this book is simply the most important work on the future of innovation, business, economics and policy and is top drawer reading for leaders across all sectors including business and industry, government, engineering and design and teaching. This book is full colour throughout.Published with The Natural Edge Project

UML For The IT Business Analyst ReviewThis book really helped me prioritise the sequence of events for the requirements gathering phase. It also confirmed which diagrams should be used with which documentation. I found that it helped organised my thinking, and gave me confidence that I was focusing on the correct diagrams and documentation and the correct stages.
I found it an easy read and the case study links together with the text well. Make sure you do the case study examples as you go, then do it again from scratch after you have finished reading to make it all fall into place.
A great book that focuses on the initial phases, sometimes getting started is the hardest part. This book really help me with that.
RegardsUML For The IT Business Analyst OverviewToday, information-technology business analysts are often working on object-oriented (OO), Unified Modeling Language (UML) projects, yet they have a long way to go to exploit the technology beyond the adoption of use cases (just one part of the UML). This book explains how, as an IT business analyst, you can pull together all of the UML tools and fully utilize them during your IT project. Rather than approaching this topic theoretically, you will actually learn by doing: A case study takes you through the entire book, helping you to develop and validate the requirements for an IT system step by step. Whether you are a new IT business analyst; an experienced analyst, but new to the UML; a developer who is interested in expanding your role to encompass IT business-analysis activities; or any other professional tasked with requirements gathering or the modeling of the business domain on a project, you'll be trained and mentored to work efficiently on UML projects in an easy-to-understand and visual manner. This new edition has been completely updated for UML 2.2, and includes coverage of all the relevant new BABOK 2 knowledge areas. The new edition also covers various lifecycle approaches (non-empirical, empirical, waterfall, iterative, and agile) and their impact on the way project steps are carried out.

Applied SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture and Design Strategies ReviewI found this book valuable for providing a solid approach to designing service oriented architectures. It is important for people to understand that this book does not focus on implementing web services - there are plenty of other books that do that. This book focuses on the hard parts - how to design an architecture around the concept of services.
This book is also not a "cookbook" - it does not offer easy answers to these tough problems. Instead it walks you through the thought process so you can learn how to come up with the right answers yourself.
I am actively using this book to help my customers get started with SOA and to help them avoid common design pitfalls. My favorite chapter is Chapter 9: Using Services to Build Enterprise Solutions. The distinction between today's monolothic applications and tomorrow's composite applications requires a paradigm shift that the authors express well.
Finally, I especially liked the practical approach, practical steps and practical advice continually peppered throughout the entire book.Applied SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture and Design Strategies Overview
Endorsed by all major vendors (Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and SAP), SOA has quickly become the industry standard for building next-generation software; this practical guide shows readers how to achieve the many benefits of SOA
Begins with a look at the architectural principles needed to create successful applications and then goes on to examine the process for designing services and SOA implementations
Each stage of the design process has an accompanying chapter that walks readers through the details and provides helpful tips, techniques, and examples
The author team of SOA practitioners also provides two unique, comprehensive, end-to-end case studies illustrating the architectural and design techniques presented in the book

FBML Essentials: Facebook Markup Language Fundamentals ReviewI purchased this book after reading a review calling this book "Totally obsolete". That reviewer has lost credibility with me, but I will admit there are portions in the book that restrict it to a period of time in the past (I feel authors should avoid referencing the future with expectation, unless they are planning a revised edition to follow those dates). This may be what the one reviewer focused on while ignoring the real context of the book. There is also a major resource link referenced I found not working, but these types of things are beyond an author's control (unless they are controlling that domain... hmmm...).
Anyway, except for a few things that date the content of this book I found it to be a solid addition to my reference library and as I begin to develop Facebook Applications it will be one of my resources to help me determine the best development route (FBML vs API).
I do appreciate the author's interests in reviews of his book and in truth it was his statements (not solely the negative review) that encouraged me to purchase the book for a closer look.
To quote Rodney Rumford; "Jesse has given you the direction to properly use FMBL with this great book. Use it often and it will save you hours of frustration." I have to agree.
FBML Essentials: Facebook Markup Language Fundamentals Overview
Do you have an idea for a Facebook application? With FBML Essentials, you'll learn how to build it quickly using the Facebook Markup Language (FBML) and other easy-to-use tools in the site's framework. If you can develop a website with HTML, writing a Facebook application with the help of this book will be a breeze. Of course, Facebook is not just another website. Any applications you write for it will have a potential audience of 16 million dedicated users. It's not just another social networking site, either. Under the surface, Facebook is pretty sophisticated, with a development toolkit that includes it's own modified version of HTML -- FBML -- to customize the look and feel of your Facebook applications. With FBML Essentials, you not only learn how to get started with this toolkit, you also get a complete reference on every FBML tag Facebook has ever written, with examples of how each tag works and advice on the best ways to use these tags in your code. This book includes:

A walkthrough of a sample Facebook application
Design rules for using images, CSS, JavaScript, and forms
Specific chapters on tags -- authorization tags, logic tags, user/group tags, profile-specific tags, and more
Messaging and alerts using FBML
Creating forms with FBML
Facebook navigation
Notifications and requests
Dynamic FBML attributes, including MockAJAX
How to test your FBML code
A chapter on FBJS, Facebook's version of JavaScript

If you want to try your hand at writing a Facebook application, you have a willing audience, an easy-to-use toolkit, and the perfect guide to get you started. FBML Essentials will help you take your idea from conception to working application in no time.

Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture Volume 3: Patterns for Resource Management ReviewOf all the design pattern books I've seen, this may be the best-written. Each pattern is covered in the ways you would probably expect: what it is, when it applies, what good and bad effects are likely to follow.
This goes a few steps beyond, though. Most patterns are shown in class diagrams, as you'd expect. Interaction diagrams are much more common and complete than in most books, and clearly show the dynamics of different roles working with each other. Multiple different interaction diagrams show multiple different ways to implement the pattern or to put it to use. CRC cards are given for lots of the patterns - among other things, this book gives good examples for people who've never seen CRC cards used before.
The exceptional part of this writing is the "implementation" section of each pattern description. It shows the different steps and factors needed for the analysis leading up to pattern use, a welcome change for people new to this level of abstraction.
Finally, just about every pattern is illustrated in Java code. This will be very helpful for readers who need a concretion to bring the abstraction to life. I always have mixed feeling about code samples, though. I've seen too many design pattern beginners mistake the example for the rule. They lose out on the breadth of the pattern and the many valid ways to interpret it into a working system.
The only drawback to this book is its basic level of presentation. Many of the patterns will be familiar to experienced readers, but that always happens with patterns. The descriptions, however, often miss important topics. This book is dedicated to patterns about resource allocation. They are helpful in resource-constrained embedded systems where deadlock is a real threat; the authors barely mention deadlock, if at all. Resource management, including replication and caching, is also important in parallel and distributed systems. Maintaining global consistency a subtle topic with many variations, and gets just a few paragraphs of discussion.
Still the book is a good one over all. The pattern content is good, and the presentation is outstanding.
//wiedweirdPattern-Oriented Software Architecture Volume 3: Patterns for Resource Management OverviewThe first volume of the POSA pattern series introduced a broad-spectrum of general-purpose patterns in software design and architecture. The second narrowed the focus to fundamental patterns for building sophisticated concurrent and networked software systems and applications. This volume uses design patterns to present techniques for implementing effective resource management in a system.
The patterns are covered in detail making use of several examples providing directions to the readers on how to implement the presented patterns. Additionally, the volume presents a thorough introduction into resource management and a case study where the patterns are applied to the domain of mobile radio networks. The patterns are grouped by different areas of resource management and hence address the complete lifecycle of resources: resource acquisition, coordination and release.

A Practical Guide to SysML, Second Edition: The Systems Modeling Language (The MK/OMG Press) ReviewOften, you can tell the value of a book by what shape it's in. My copy of A Practical Guide to SysML is pretty beat up. Not only does it have a lot of my own scribbling in the margins and blue and yellow highlighting (blue for things to come back and skim and yellow for things to absolutely visit again), it has coffee, peach and other various stains. This book resides in my brief case (my satchel bag) and goes with me ("A Good Companion") when I have to accompany my wife on errands (if I am 30 minutes in any place I will read a passage or two). With this book and an iPod, I can handle anything including long waits in any airport or any delays anywhere.
Sandy and the team do an outstanding job of introducing the reader into one of the most important new System Engineering tools available today; SysML. As pointed out by others, it's not just about software anymore, it often about architectures and the enterprise. As the trends in system development move from platform centric to NetCentric, as work for organizations moves from individuals to collaborative enterprise efforts and as we all try to improve our processes and add value to collaborative efforts, a model of "what we're doing" becomes so important. The team does an outstanding job of presenting the concept of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) in Chapter 2 and providing a great example to follow in the subsequent chapters. Throughout the book, the explanation of the diagrams and concepts are thorough and easy to understand. I thank the authors for making it interesting and relevant.
For those just starting in the field, this book is an outstanding accompaniment to any of the SysML CASE tools that are emerging. In fact, I highly recommend to anybody who is going to be working in the System Engineering field (be it automotive, aerospace, civil engineering, architecture, software, disaster relief, etc.) to keep a copy of this book handy in case you get delayed some place and want make use of some spare time.

Post Scrip (Feb 09) - I had the great fortune of attending a two day intense INCOSE sponsored tutorial on SysML taught by Sandy in Old Town Pasadena Nov 08. Wow, what a drink from the knowledge fire hose. Sandy's insight in model organization (using block diagrams for domain modeling) of complex projects was just one stunning eye opener. If anybody gets a chance to attend of one these, do it.
